Porn's investigative journalist is back on the podcast! Gustavo Turner is a reporter for industry publication Xbiz and has a wealth of knowledge about the adult industry — and the people who are trying to take it down. He and Holly discuss what the midterm elections mean for the industry, the difference between obscenity and pornography, and the active court cases that could dictate the future of porn. Plus, Holly reminisces about “Leisure Suit Larry” — the adult video game that made you take a history test to prove you weren't a kid! Support our show by supporting our sponsors! It’s almost impossible to imagine the internet without porn. In fact, some of the earliest exchanges of photos and cash that ever happened online were transactions involving porn. Believe it — smut shaped e-commerce as we know it. And yet, there are still so many trying to legislate it out of existence, as we learned about when Gustavo Turner from Xbiz stopped by the show in February. So, what’s the plan to fight back? This week’s guest has the answer for us: our very own Paulita Pappel. Our new co-host Aria Vega spoke with Paulita on her work establishing a European chapter of the Free Speech Coalition, a collective that lobbies to protect sex workers and other businesses in the industry. Paulita is seeking to amend the Digital Services Act, new legislation in the EU aiming to instil a code of ethics for the internet, to include language that issues specific protections for creators of erotic content. You can sign the petition to amend the DSA here: http://chng.it/BTRnjhJqrf Paulita Pappel is a feminist filmmaker and pornographer based in Berlin. She’s the co-founder of Lustery, a platform for real-life couples around the world to document and share their sex lives. She also co-organizes and curates the Pornfilmfestival Berlin. Paulita is also a producer, performer, director, intimacy coordinator, podcaster, and advocate for a sex-positive and consent-based culture. On December 4th, 2020, The New York Times published an article by Nicholas Kristof titled ‘The Children of Pornhub’. Kristof claims the platform is “infested with rape videos” and derides it for monetizing abusive content. He calls for Canada’s authorities to investigate the case, and for major payment providers like Visa and Mastercard to review their collaboration with the platform. The article incited public uproar, and triggered a series of events that could impact the adult industry, and also wider legislation around content moderation online, in a way that would change the internet as we know it. How has a problem regarding content moderation become a case against the adult industry? Who is behind this narrative? Why is one of the lawyers that defended Trump during his first impeachment trial defending a victim of sexual assault and exploiting her case to call for Pornhub’s shutdown? On the POV podcast, we spoke to some of the platform’s top content creators to get their take, as well as Gustavo Turner, news editor at Xbiz, to understand how this case is yet another action in the war on porn - a crusade by various special interest groups to restrict free speech and regulate the internet. (TW/CW: This episode contains references to sexual abuse of adults and children. Please listen with caution and take care of yourself if it feels too heavy.) Our guest is Gustavo Turner, a writer and photographer, as well as news editor for XBIZ, an adult industry trade publication. In this episode, Gustavo helps us unpack the fallout from the mounting “warn on porn” over the last few weeks, starting with the New York Times op-ed which led to Pornhub losing its payment processing capabilities. Who's next on the list of porn sites to be attacked? We also discuss the wider issue of online content moderation, attacks on section 230, and social media censorship. Holly and Eva discuss the APAC "Spread the Love" event, Eva's first porn party-- did Eva get drunk and fall in the pool? Sadly no, but they had a great time anyhow. One of the main topics is a recent story (reported by our previous guest, journalist Gustavo Turner) about an ex-pornstar who tries to get a job in the real world and gets dismissed from school based on her background. The porn stigma is real, people. And then Holly launches into the craziest porn story she's ever heard... you literally have to listen to it to believe it, it's that bizarre. Gustavo Turner is a journalist at Xbiz, an adult industry trade magazine. He has been covering some really important issues for the adult community, such as porn being proclaimed a "Public Health Crisis" in some conservative states, to Instagram's unfair bias against adult performers and the sweeping deletion of accounts, to the very controversial Mercedes Carrera case. Rarely has journalism in the adult industry been so comprehensive, and Gustavo is tacking some serious subjects that so many other publications have avoided. The two discuss this ongoing comic and its genesis, but they also talk about a variety of Karl's other works. Of particular focus are the series of strips he created for the Boston Phoenix between June 2005 and November 2012. The earliest ones are collected in Whatever (Alternative Comics), and the later comics in two follow-up compilations, The Lodger (KSA Publishing) and Failure (Alternative Comics). In this way, Derek is able to talk with Karl about his distinctive realistic style and how he has evolved from a heavily reliance on crosshatching to a more simple, even softer approach. Along with this, Karl shares is aesthetic philosophy of naturalistic detail and how it differs strongly from that of creators such as Scott McCloud, Jessica Abel, and Matt Madden. The guys also talk about Karl's first book, the Xeric Award-winning Guilty. This effort is what put Karl Stevens on the map in 2005, and even today it serves as a wonderful introduction to his style. They also cover the artist's efforts in the fine arts, including his highly informative Anatomy for Artists: A New Approach to Discovering, Learning and Remembering the Body (North Light Books), coauthored with Anthony Apesos. Karl also shares some information about The Winner, his new book that will be coming out this fall from Retrofit Comics/Big Planet Comics, and future plans to collect his and Gustavo Turner's Succe$$ comics into book form. Karina Longworth talks with LARB's Medaya Ocher and Gustavo Turner about her phenomenally successful podcast about old Hollywood, "You Must Remember This," on the occasion of the launch of its new season series on Dead Blondes. Then LARB's Janice Littlejohn talks with African-American Theologian Monica Coleman about her stunning memoir Bipolar Faith. Also LARB Film Editor Anna Schectman drops in to recommend Patricia White's book Women's Cinema/World Cinema: Projecting Contemporary Feminisms.
Director Jack Pettibone and Producer Shane Slattery-Quintanilla join LARB's Gustavo Turner to discuss their exceptional new documentary The Seventh Fire. Six years in the making, the film takes an unflinching look at the lives of gang members on an Ojibwe Reservation in Minnesota; and discovers men of profound intelligence, acutely aware of the tragic history of their people. Then Dian Hanson, legendary editor of Taschen's sexy books series, drops by to tell the story of trail-blazing gay pornographer, Bob Mizer; and celebrate the publication of The Bob Mizer AMG 1000 Model Directory.
Author Susan Kaiser Greenland talks with Laurie Winer about her new best-selling book Mindful Games: Sharing Mindfulness and Meditation with Children, Teens, and Families. The question is raised: Can mindful meditation be the antidote to the toxicity of Trump? Also, in recognition of Bob Dylan's Nobel Prize in literature, LARB's Gustavo Turner drops by to recommend two works of literature: Bob Dylan's "Love and Theft" and Leonard Cohen's 10 Songs, great albums overlooked because they were released on (or around) 9/11/01. The show closes with Gerard Manley Hopkins' poem Spring and Fall.
