A couple of years ago, we weren't sure if a podcast focused on thoughtful, evidence-based building would resonate with Australia's construction community. Turns out, builders, architects, and clients were hungry for exactly this kind of conversation - real talk about what works, what doesn't, mental health challenges, and how to navigate the shifting landscape of codes, client expectations, and new technologies. This year's conversations revealed clear themes: passive house principles are entering everyday builder vocabulary, communication between teams makes or breaks projects, and learning new techniques while unlearning old habits is essential for industry evolution. The Mindful Builder community proved that Australia's building industry is ready for deeper conversations about construction quality, performance, and collaboration. Here's to another year of building better, together - with honest conversations, practical insights, and a community committed to raising standards across Australian construction.

One crown. We set out to name our Booker's of the Year and wound up in a spirited brawl over flavor, finish, and what makes a true Booker's. With Barry's Batch (01), By The Pond (02), Jerry's Batch (03), and the Reserve finished in El Tesoro tequila barrels on the table, we compare notes on rickhouse aroma, brown sugar depth, peanut-nougat warmth, and that unmistakable Kentucky hug.Our first pass paints the field: 01 brings classic Beam character with brown sugar and a firm oak spine; 03 leans into peanut, honey, and candy-bar texture with the softest proof feel; the Reserve surprises with a peppery agave lift that challenges expectations of the line. Then 02 steals the show. Once we bounce between glasses and reset our palates, “By The Pond” blooms with a rickhouse nose, silky fruit, and balanced oak, finishing long without scraping the palate. It's the most complete sip of the bunch—familiar, expressive, and deeply satisfying. We don't stop at tasting. We tussle over scoring, call out palate fatigue at high proof, and even blend across batches to test how fruit, char, and nougat stack. The bigger conversation threads through every pour: tradition versus innovation. Can a tequila finish still feel like Booker's? How much char is enough? What does the rickhouse note tell you about age and barrel selection? Whether you're chasing 2025 bottles or building your Booker's library, this roundup gives you a clear map of strengths, trade-offs, and the bottle we'd grab first.Raise a glass with us as we crown By The Pond (2025-02) the winner, with major respect to Jerry's Batch for easy charm and the Reserve for bold experimentation. Particularly appropriate given the top trend Vynamic has identified this year – the convergence of healthcare to create value (1:15). Collaboration will also be critical in addressing the next trend – the growing healthcare workforce crisis (6:00). The next two trends have to do with expansion – in the definition of health to include healthcare plus selfcare (10:40) and the marketplace for precision therapy and digital therapeutics (14:02). The final trend explored is the shift from acknowledgment to activation when it comes to health equity (17:30). Finally, the group ties it all together with a discussion on how listeners can incorporate these trends into their 2023 plans (22:50). Don walks through how his team approaches this.[00:24:11] Type Systems and MaintainabilityHow Don's journey from PHP and JavaScript to TypeScript and Rust changed his approach to structure and communication.[00:27:05] Testing With TypesStable type contracts make tests cleaner and less ambiguous.[00:27:45] Building Trust in AI SystemsDon discusses repeatability, hallucinations, and why tools like MCP matter for grounding LLM behavior.[00:29:28] AI in Developer ToolsSearch Craft's MCP server lets developers talk to the platform conversationally instead of hunting through docs.[00:33:21] Improving Legacy Systems SlowlyThe Strangler pattern as a practical way to replace old systems one endpoint at a time.[00:34:11] Deep Work and Reducing Reactive NoiseDon encourages developers to carve out time for uninterrupted thinking rather than bouncing between notifications.[00:36:09] Measuring ProgressBuild times, test speeds, and coverage provide signals teams can use to track actual improvement.[00:38:24] Changing Opinions Over a CareerWhy Don eventually embraced TypeScript after originally writing it off.[00:39:15] Industry Trends and Repeating CyclesSPAs, server rendering, and the familiar pendulum swing in web architecture.[00:41:26] Experimentation and Team AutonomyHow POCs and side projects surface organically within Don's team.[00:44:42] Growing Skills Through Intentional GoalsSetting learning targets in 1:1s to support long-term developer growth.[00:47:19] Where to Find DonLinkedIn, Blue Sky, and his site: donmckinnon.dev.Resources MentionedA Philosophy of Software Design by John OusterhoutJohn Ousterhout's Maintainable.fm Interview (Episode 131)Search CraftElasticAlgoliaWordPress Plugin DirectoryRequest for Comments (RFC)Strangler Fig PatternC2 WikiModel Context Protocol (MCP)Glam AIAubrey/Maturin Series by Patrick O'BrianMaster and Commanderdonmckinnon.devThanks to Our Sponsor!Turn hours of debugging into just minutes! On this episode of Destination on the Left, I'm taking you behind the scenes of my own year-end planning process. As we look ahead to 2026, I'll walk you through how I reflect on the past year, celebrating what worked, identifying lessons learned, and checking in on both team and personal well-being. I share everything from my practical planning frameworks and financial benchmarks to trend forecasting and tips for creating a collaborative culture. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Why intentional reflection and bold, future-oriented questions are essential for setting effective priorities and ensuring organizational growth What emerging trends mean for travel, tourism, and hospitality planning in 2026 How I use practical financial benchmarks and department-level planning to ensure the organization is ready for upcoming challenges and opportunities Why operationalizing collaboration by setting clear roles, goals, budgets, and documented processes moves it from a “nice to have” to a real strategic advantage What steps you can take to engage your whole team in the visioning and planning process to create greater buy-in and drive results How you can use my 2026 planning checklist and reflection questions to set your organization up for long-term success Begin with Genuine Reflection Before plotting the future, it's crucial to anchor your plans in a clear-eyed assessment of the present and recent past. It's so important to reflect on accomplishments, goal progress, team health, and personal leadership. I ask myself and my team a few probing questions: What did we accomplish this year? Where did we fall short and why? Are our people thriving, or stretched thin? How is my own mental wellbeing impacting my leadership? These multi-level reflections ground the planning process in reality and provide the learning needed to improve both professionally and personally. Regularly scheduled interviews—such as “stay interviews” with staff—help surface the reasons your team members stay and opportunities for positive change. Industry Trends and Future Readiness How well are you anticipating and responding to the shifts in your sector? It's critical to keep abreast of evolving trends—such as the rise of sustainability and regenerative tourism, persistent workforce challenges, and technological advancements like AI and digital personalization. Simultaneously, there's a noticeable trend toward travelers seeking meaningful, off-the-beaten-path experiences, as well as a movement to “unplug” and seek present-moment enjoyment. Empowering Your Team Planning isn't a solo exercise. At TAP we use a bottom-up approach: each department creates and presents their strategic plans, which are then built into broader company goals. Our annual team retreats blend strategic planning, culture-building, and a lot of fun ensuring everyone plays a role in shaping the future. We foster a sense of ownership among team members at all levels, after all, when everyone is involved, energy and commitment to the plan dramatically increase. I want to leave you with this challenge: What role will collaboration play in your 2026 plan, and how will you operationalize it to drive real results—not just good intentions?
