BrainStorm wants to hear from you! Send us a text.Alzheimer's disease is no longer just a memory problem — it's a biological, cultural, and ethical challenge reshaping how we think about aging, identity, and medicine. In this episode of Brainstorm by UsAgainstAlzheimers, host Meryl Comer sits down with Dr. Jason Karlawish, professor of medicine, medical ethics, health policy, and neurology at the University of Pennsylvania. They explore how Alzheimer's evolved from a rare condition into a full-blown public health crisis. Dr. Karlawish unpacks the science behind biomarker testing and early detection, the promise and complexity of new anti-amyloid treatments, and why so many physicians remain reluctant to diagnose cognitive decline at all. From health equity gaps that leave Latino and African American patients chronically underserved, to the ethical weight of disclosing an Alzheimer's diagnosis to someone still in the middle of their career, Dr. Karlawish brings both scientific precision and moral seriousness to one of medicine's most urgent conversations. It's a candid, wide-ranging discussion about what it truly means to confront a disease that strikes at the heart of who we are.  Welcome to the Fortune Factor Podcast, where we explore the crucial issues shaping our world. Today, we delve into a topic gaining increasing recognition: racism as a profound public health crisis. This isn't just about individual prejudice; it's a systemic issue, deeply embedded in societal structures, that significantly impacts the health and well-being of racialized communities across the globe.: The momentum behind declaring racism a public health crisis accelerated dramatically in 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and a heightened awareness of racial injustices. While the Wisconsin Public Health Association made the first such declaration in 2018, hundreds of cities, counties, and public health agencies across the U.S. have since followed suit. A pivotal moment came in April 2021, when Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, officially declared racism a "serious public health threat." She emphasized how the pandemic starkly illuminated long-standing inequities driven by racism, which have affected public health for generations.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/racism-white-privilege-in-america--4473713/support.

Docherty stresses the idea that gun violence prevention and reduction is an issue that must be addressed collaboratively with scholars, politicians, and community engagement. To tackle this issue Docherty works with community groups such as the Toledo Community action table and Moms Demand Action to gather a community perspective, as she believes no progress can be made without the people who are directly impacted by gun violence. Docherty hopes to increase visibility surrounding human health and safety, children, racial equity and address gun violence prevention on both local and state levels. He warns that its potent alkaloids act directly on opioid receptors, leading to dependence, withdrawal, psychosis, and even fatalities. Muhamad outlines the surge in use during the COVID-19 pandemic, the risks to youth, and the dangers of contamination and unregulated production. He also highlights the lack of tailored treatments for kratom dependence, the need for stronger regulation, and the importance of educating the public about its hidden dangers. Addiction medicine physician Safina Adatia discusses her article, "Why gambling addiction is America's next health crisis." She warns that following the Supreme Court's 2018 ruling to overturn sports gambling bans, the U.S. is facing a potential epidemic with tens of millions at risk. Safina explains that unlike substance use disorders, problem gambling lacks sufficient research, effective treatments, and public health infrastructure. The conversation explores how the ease of access through smartphones and ubiquitous, predatory marketing campaigns are fueling what she calls a "runaway train," with data suggesting a widespread issue, particularly among young people. Safina argues for a multi-layered clinical approach combining therapy and medication, similar to models for opioid use disorder, and calls for urgent legislative action. She advocates for Congress to fund research, for lawmakers to curb advertising like they did for tobacco, and for a surgeon general's warning on gambling platforms to protect the public from this avoidable crisis. The #BackOffBobbie campaign lives on, because someone has to say what Operation Stork Speed refused to: the real risk in formula isn't just seed oils or trace heavy metals (the red herrings distracting the #MAHA moms). It's cronobacter, a rare but deadly bacteria that continues to fly under the radar while mommy influencers parade USDA organic labels and metal-free test results like gold stars. This week, we're joined by Natasha Vargas-Cooper of Radical Moms Union to expose the uncomfortable truths formula companies don't want mothers to know. We talk about the fox guarding the hen house of formula testing, the 626 NEC lawsuits filed against major manufacturer Abbott, RFK Jr.'s murky ties to the formula industry, and how social media marketing has become the newest weapon against maternal instinct. This conversation isn't about shame. It's about power: power in knowledge, power in truth, and power in numbers. It's time to reclaim motherhood from corporate capture.
