Key Talking Points:“Addicted to Life: How I went from homeless to extraordinary success and happiness in a short period of time” by Rob Rowsell RobRowsell.com Relatable book for everyone- shop owners and managers Readers are leaders- start by reading a few chapters every couple days Addiction can be other than drugs and alcohol, can be food and cigarettes etc “You can’t coast uphill” – either getting better or getting worse, cannot coast success Small successes can slow momentum- for example: losing weight is a success but maintaining weight is long term lifestyle. Can’t get complacent after your small success Get outside of your comfort zone or you aren’t growing and learning Success is a curved road- can only see so far until you get to a curve 8 Building blocks in “Addicted to Life”1) Be done- announce to yourself and the rest of the world 2) Get uncomfortable and take action 3) Create the wave of momentum 4) Prepare now for what’s coming- growth 5) Must be open to the unexpected 6) You won’t always feel like you are winning 7) Must understand the law of exposure- you are what you’re surroundings are 8) You won’t do it alone- success is a team sport Working in the automotive industry Had previous service advisor background Was 45 days clean, applied to “work a day” job- filled out application honestly Referred to an auto repair shop- hired and the owner became the mentor An acquaintance of father was brainstorming about needing someone to take over repair shop Timing will never be perfect for the opportunity Has 4 shops3 shops make 2 mils each annually 4th shop just opened in September Resources: Thanks to Rob Rowsell for his contribution to the aftermarket’s premier podcast. ProjectME with Tiffany Carter – Entrepreneurship & Millionaire Mindset
I have a prime example of why it is so important for us to show up loud, proud, and as ourselves on social media. Most of us entrepreneurs are so busy creating content and doing #allthethings that we forget to take a moment and put ourselves into our ideal client’s shoes, and how they go about searching for solutions to their current problems. We start making assumptions on how clients find coaches, or wellness products, or fitness plans…and it’s important to be reminded of the basics. The guest I brought on for today’s show is my real life example of successful content marketing and branding. You see, I hand-select and approve of all my podcast guests. I only bring people on who are going to teach you, enlighten you, and hopefully entertain you. I can’t even recall what I was searching for on Instagram one night, but I came across Dr. Amanda Barrientez’s profile and I saw in all caps “NO FUCKING AROUND COACHING.” If you are a regular listener you know I love a well-placed F-bomb. These four words in her profile caught my attention enough to look further, and I loved what I saw. A woman who has been through a lot of crap in her life and has made a huge turn-around and now helps others do the same. Dr. Barrientez is the Founder and CEO of NFA Coaching. She went from being on food stamps to making 6-figures in just three years. She is passionate about helping people thrive in their businesses and reach their max potential. Rob Rowsell, shop owner, owner of Family Auto Service a four shop group in the La Mesa, CA area. Author of the book ‘Addicted To Life’, How I Went from Homeless to Extraordinary Success and Happiness in a Short Period of Time. Find a link to Rob’s book on the book page on the website HERE (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=rob+rowsell) . Mark Roberts is the owner of Roberts Properties, Inc, Managing Partner of Total True Automotive dba Schertz Auto Service, Craftsman Building and Renovation LLC. He is also partnered with a Local Custom Home builder. Mark is also the former owner of Auto Collision Works. He grew up in Schertz and has been a resident since 1969. Mark also serves on the Board of Directors of Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative, Guadalupe Valley Home Services Corporation, and the Guadalupe Valley Economic Development Corporation. Listen to Mark’s previous episodes HERE (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=mark+roberts) . Key Talking Points: Mark Roberts Prioritize – Decide on what’s important, then focus. Limit distractions. I don’t have any email or social media alerts turned on. My phone stays on silent or dnd most times. Trust and empower your staff (delegate) Clear your head – Write things down to get them out of your head. I use an app (Remember the Milk) for most daily things. Do it, Delegate it, defer it or drop it. Exercise – There are lots of benefits to this. Donny Seyfer How, when and how long are the best to learn new things Filters our brain automatically sets to ignore what we either don’t want to hear or don’t understand Neural pathways, what they are and how to mow the lawn on them. Rob Rowsell What’s your system for breaking down the mountain of actionable items you get from this type of an event? If you don’t have a system, it’s likely not much will get done. Selecting 3-5 items that are most important, that must get done before moving to the other items on the list is a great strategy. WOIT = Working on it Tuesdays! has been a great strategy for making sure that the items that are at the “helicopter level”, the items that only I can do, do not get forgotten, or unintentionally ignored. We have all heard the term “Working ON my business, not IN my business”, this is the day/time dedicated just for that. This is uninterrupted “Maker” time, as compared to “Manager” time. Set realistic, measurable quarterly goals. This will also apply to what education you have the time to absorb. Your coach can help you with this. It amazes me how people overestimate what can be done in 3 months, and underestimate what can be done in a year. Writing down and reviewing what’s most important to get done this quarter, and then breaking that down to what of those items you can knock out each week, and really attacking the portion of the list that is “maker” time on Tuesdays will really help you in “moving the ball down the field”. The results will astonish you! Make sure to have someone on your team that can take away the $10.00 per hour items on your list. The value an owner brings to the table can be minimized...
Your Learning Curve Never Sounded So Good The Panel: Matt Fanslow is the diagnostic tech/shop manager at Riverside Automotive in Red Wing, MN Eric Ziegler a Mobile Diagnostician owner of EZ Diagnostic Solutions Inc in Peoria, IL. Also, an instructor for Automotive Seminars and The Driveability Guys Rob Rowsell, shop owner, owner of Family Auto Service a four shop group in the La Mesa, CA area. Author of the book ‘Addicted To Life’, How I Went from Homeless to Extraordinary Success and Happiness in a Short Period of Time. Find a link to Rob’s book on the book page on the website (https://remarkableresults.biz/books/) . Tanner Brandt, owner Tanner’s auto Clinic LLC, Mobile diagnostics and programming as well as teach for CTI Key Talking Points The panel consists of two former addict and two ‘normies’. The ‘normies’ have a close friend or family member that is in recovery and has had an impact on them. Myth: People who struggle with addition come from a bad or broken home and have no support. Truth: Until an addict says ‘Done’ no one can help them. Your heart may say you are done but your actions must demonstrate it. Addiction can come in many forms: Caffeine Sex Germaphobe Gambling Video Games We worry about it when it becomes difficult to perform our daily functions. Look at science. It starts uniting things. How you are wired Drug testing for your people or new recruits is dependent on state laws. Gray areas in states where marijuana is legal. You can put up a sign that says ‘We are a drug-free workplace.’ An addict’s descent into relapse occurs long before they take in the substance or activity. Talk to people to learn the signals of relapse. Usually, performance at work suffers and that is a signal. You must call them on it. If you ignore it will not go away. It is their addiction. You must protect the business. The success rate for addicts beyond the first time is not good. The success rate can be less than 10%. Faith-based success rate is over 80%. There is a 12 step program at Vision KC. There are many programs out there to help. If an addict plays the denial card there is no hope. Having the right culture in the company will help a recovering addict. The Christmas party is not at a bar. Do not ridicule the addict Opioid addiction can start with a prescription for pain because of an accident or the like If you are wired for an addition your pain killer can set you off. We are in an opioid epidemic in our country. Opioid addicts have treatment that others don’t. They can go on an alternative drug to get their life back, their job back, their family back. Our reward system is designed, in our brains, to give us big rewards, a dose of dopamine. We can find ourselves finding alternative ways to provide us the dose of dopamine. If you expose yourself you will become; In Rob’s book he talks about ‘The Law of Exposure’. It is as reliable as the Law of Gravity If you hang around bank robbers you will become a bank robber. If you hang around God-fearing men, you’ll become a god fearing man. Don’t risk a relapse by hanging out in the wrong environment. The way out is you need to believe in yourself. Myth: People believe that there is a moral shortcoming because you are an addict. Addiction is a family disease. The negative energy that destroys an addict’s life can be used to focus on recovery. By healing the addict the family heals. There is more going on than just a lack of willpower or corruption of a person. If you had an employee leave work to go for cancer treatment would your perception of the person going for addiction treatment be the same? The hard part of an addict is living life without. 10% is the drinking – 90% is the thinking. Mental illness, driving people to self medicate. Link
