People  fall into endurance sports for different reasons. For Chris Tubbs, physical activity was needed to turn his life around. He started training in his 40s and it has completely changed his attitude towards life. He says he's like a ‘joyful volcano' each time he hits the road. In this episode, Chris shares how he got into endurance sports, triathlons in particular, why he founded the Houston Childhood Walk for Apraxia of Speech, and how an unexpected diagnosis changed he outlook.  If you need inspiration for starting over, no matter your age, this episode is for you.  Episode Highlights: How Chris started endurance sports to turn his life around Training for the triathlons and hiring his first coach Overcoming mental blocks and imposter syndrome as a ‘new' triathlete Getting his PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota Founding the Houston Childhood Walk for Apraxia of Speech.  Prostate cancer and the importance of regular screening in men above 40 The link between proper nutrition and performance Guest Bio Chris recently found joy in training for and racing endurance triathlons. He doesn't have a strong background in athletics, and only found the sport when he hit a low point in his life. The training gave him focus and an outlet as he navigated becoming healthy again. He grew up between Chicago and Los Angles, then moved to North Carolina to attend North Carolina Central University, an HBCU. After graduation, he served as a bartender before being accepted into the PhD program North Carolina State University. Although his doctoral road was long and hostile, he was successful in becoming the first African American to earn a PhD in Biochemistry in the history of the university. Being a science nerd at heart, he's had the joy and the fortune to be a part of the discovery and development of new drugs that now cure diseases and address serious unmet medical needs. He's had the honor of founding the annual Houston Childhood Walk for Apraxia of Speech. He started the walk to be a resource that connects families and professionals that are supporting children who have to overcome this rare genetic disorder. He's also an active member of the Houston real estate investment community. Outside of work, the bulk of Chris' time is spent training for triathlons. After a year and a half he completed his first full distance Ironman in November 2020 at IronMan Florida. A few weeks later he underwent radical prostatectomy as a consequence of a prostate cancer diagnosis that he received one month before the race. Ironman training prepared him well for the difficult road back to racing. Exactly 6-months after his surgery, he ran is 1st race (an Olympic distance) and got a 40 min PR! His physician says that he  recovered way ahead of schedule. He'll test himself again at Lubbock 70.3. and is now focusing  on preparing for IMFL in November 2021. Tough series in Los Angles. We knew it would be tough, but man was it tough. We break down every game for you because that's what we do. Every single frustrating at-bat, decision, strike call, and missed opportunity. This Dodgers team is full of great, underappreciated players from top to bottom and James gets deep on exactly why their roster construction is so brilliant and how it gives them a leg up with in-season transactions. Of course, we pull some positives like the play of Pete Alonso, Carlos Carrasco, Marcus Stroman, and Brandon Nimmo. More so, we break down what contract negotiations will look like for those last two guys. After the games, we answer some of YOUR questions that were sent on Twitter. We discuss playing time for our fringe starters once Lindor is activated (sorry Dom Smith), what the Mets should do with Michael Conforto, whether or not we still have a shot in the division, and what the Mets' offseason might look like. James is positive, Marc is negative, and fun is had by all. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/metsdup/support

San Bernardino, CA sits between Los Angles and the Sierra that run to the east. Located in an almost desert like region San Bernardino, California still manages to get 13 inches of rain, on average, per year from a combination of showers that drift westward from the mountains and large-scale winter storms that move in off the Pacific Ocean. In the period from 2018-2020 several inches of rain have fallen in the city each year after a very dry decade that led to water restrictions across the state of California, that of course was before this extreme drought year of 2021. But back on August 16, 1909, dry weather ensued after a rain shower the day before. The next day the residents of San Bernardino saw rain was May 6, 1912. When the group disbanded Autumn continued to write for other artists like Boston rapper Yeshua Alexander. She made the switch to screenwriting and filmproducing and after receiving her Master's in producing from AFI, America's top film school. This led to her meeting and collaborating with Los Angles music producer David Je and the birth of her EP “Autumn Time” which feature songs that celebrate female independence. Representing her home state of North Carolina, she hopes to follow in the successful footsteps of Dababy and her favorite rapper J Cole. Her fist single “Alright” is a tropical uplifting song that was inspired during the COVID pandemic. It's already gained several views on YouTube and is fastly becoming a major hit. Rainfall in Southern California in the summertime is almost non-existent. In fact, the climate takes on desert-like conditions. The average rainfall in June, July and August in Los Angles is less than a quarter of an inches of rainfall – 2 tenths of an inch to be exact. July is the driest month with barely more than a spritz of rain at an average of one hundredth of an inch – the lowest measurable total of rainfall that is officially observed. In contrast New Orleans is generally regarded as the rainiest big-city in the US and averages more than 6 inches of rain for the month of July. It's not always dry in LA with the months of January, February and March all averaging more than 3 inches of rain each month. Certainly, though there are two distinct seasons in LA, a wet season and a dry season. To give you an idea of just how dry it is in Southern California in July, on this date in weather history on July 14, 1886, twenty-for hundredths of an inch of rain – just shy of a quarter of an inch fell in LA, the most ever on a single day in July in the region in recorded history. Not much impact was felt in the region – today of course a rainfall like that on a July day would result very slippery freeways because the accumulated oil dripping off of cars and onto the highway would mix with the water and cause the roads to become slippery. Alice Brooks grew up on Broadway musical theater and movies as a kid, and loves shooting music and dance oriented films and TV shows. Alice has always been in awe of dancers, and though she isn't a dancer herself, she is inspired by their work ethic and loves that she can capture dance with her camera. Working on In The Heights has fulfilled a lifelong dream for Alice. She and director Jon M. Chu have known each other since college at USC. The two bonded over musicals- she shot his she shot his student short, a musical called When The Kids Are Away in 2002 and worked together again on the film Jem and the Holograms. Alice and Jon were shooting the Apple TV+ series Home Before Dark when he asked her to shoot In The Heights. Jon, choreographer Christopher Scott and Alice had also worked together on a Hulu series called The LXD: The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers for three seasons, and they got used to working together and working quickly, figuring out how tell a story and develop characters through dance. Jon, Alice and Chris Scott felt their whole careers came together to make a musical like In The Heights. The characters' hopes, dreams, fears and anxieties can be played out not only through song and dance but in the environment around them, which sometimes shifts to where they are emotionally. With just 49 shoot days, preproduction for In The Heights was essential. Alice and Jon Chu would location scout in the mornings and then spend afternoons in the dance rehearsal space with Chris Scott. They would share their input and make suggestions from each location scout on how to face and orient the dance. Alice and Jon thought at first many more locations would be done on a soundstage, but they found that shooting in real places on the streets looked and felt so true- even the theater and the subway station were real locations. During shooting, every Sunday they would meet and go through the coming week because the schedule was so tight and the camerawork so complex, looking at videos from dance rehearsal to discuss the shots and angles to use, deciding if a crane shot was needed, and how many cameras to use for each scene. Jon made animatics detailing each scene from storyboards and dance rehearsal footage. With 17 song and dance scenes in In The Heights, Jon had huge goals for the musical numbers, and Alice, the dancers and the entire film crew were able to pull it off. Alice grew up in New York and got into acting at a young age. She and her family then moved to Los Angles, and she realized as a teen that she did not want to be an actor. Being on set around the camera crew made her realize that she wanted to shoot movies, and that being a DP was her true dream. After graduating from USC Film School, Alice asked many of the graduate students if she could shoot their projects, knowing that the key to honing her craft was practice, practice, practice. She shot about 20 shorts, including Jon M. Chu's musical short, When The Kids Are Away. Alice thinks it's important to find the right people to work with, since you're spending so much time together, and forming that bond helps everyone. She wants to make movies that inspire her daughter. For anyone with a family, it's important to pick the projects that are worth it, since filming can take so much time away from loved ones. Find Alice Brooks: https://www.alicebrooks.com/ Instagram: @_alicebrooks_ You can see In The Heights in theaters, the best place to experience the film's immersive sound design and visuals. The Daily Boost | Coaching You Need. Success You Deserve.

A funny thing happens when we graduate from High School and enter the real world; dreams change.  When my Son was in his early 20's, he announced that he was heading to Los Angles to pursue his dream of becoming a Rock Star. He would be a singer in a rock and roll band, and he was on a mission to achieve his goal. When I heard his idea, I had a question - "What happens if you become a member of the band instead?" He had a perplexed look on his face. I'm not sure if he was angry or confused. It seemed that the concept of playing any other role never occurred to him. I continued. "Would you be okay with that? Are you willing to do what it takes to rise to the top? And if you don't get what you want, will you be happy settling something different?" That's when he said, "No. I wouldn't be happy. I'm a Rock Star, and that's what I'm going to do.” The following day he began his journey and chased his dreams for a few years. While he had success and enjoyed his Rock Star status, something else began to emerge. He discovered a new passion that fit him like a glove. He started to dabble in graphic design and music promotions and soon found himself loving being in a more supportive role. He wasn't on stage; he was playing in the band. But there was no doubt he was a star in his new world. His life was different than he thought it would be, but he found his day-to-day experience to be a much better fit. You will always get what you want if you are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. But you might be surprised when you find your real passion along the way.
