There have been many iterations of the man we know as Nehemiah Cisneros, but right now, in the most moment, he is most himself. If you know Nehemiah, he is a thoughtful, insightful and evolving figure in art who is a filmmaker in a painters' body. We met him as AUGOR, the graffiti writer who took over Los Angles in the late aughts with billboards and walls that were just as influenced by comics, video games and low brow art as it was the history of lettering and monikers. He was fresh air in a scene that was already full of major creative forces: SABER, REVOK, RETNA and the MSK crew members. Cisneros was the young buck making a name, with LA in his blood and something theatric in his vision. Across a few art schools, going through addiction and his own "trouble" that we mention in this podcast, Cisneros found a new voice in the art departments of Santa Monica City College, Kansas City Art Institute and then an MFA at UCLA. What that voice does is create a vision of his youth in Los Angeles and the aesthetic of a city of narratives, literally in its DNA. Cisneros, even now with a body of work on its way to Josh Lilley in London, has taken a life of influence from film, arcades, city streets, low brow and fine art into a beautiful and often overwhelmingly dense series of paintings. In this conversation on The Unibrow's Radio Juxtapoz podcast, Evan Pricco and Cisneros talk about life after an MFA, his time working in the arts and studying painting, how Mark Ryden influenced his early years and how now he is looking to Theodore Gericault, Max Ernst, gamer culture and Black Exploitation films for his new works. Off the the "goon cave"... Radio Juxtapoz' Unibrow podcast is hosted by Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 156 was recorded in Los Angeles on March 5, 2025 Follow us on @radiojuxtapoz
Send us a textAudrey Cefaly streamed into the Playwright's Spotlight after I had the pleasure of seeing the production of her play Alabaster at The Fountain Theatre in Los Angles. This is first time I've had the opportunity to talk to the playwright after seeing their work. We discuss asking big questions, making changes throughout the play's evolution, how much design is on the page, knowing the rules of the card game, and refraining from hardwiring stage directions to allow creative freedom. We also delve into stripping the work down to its core, the use of hashtags, writing poetic dialogue, stillness in storytelling and other way finders, and the use of overlapping and dual dialogue. We wrap it up writing regional, the use of hypnotic language, the purpose of an artistic statements, and her toolbox of playwright vocabulary and "How to Playwright." It's a great conversation that went on for another thirty minutes after I stopped recording. Won't let that happen again. Enjoy, and be sure to go catch Alabaster at any of the theaters below.Audrey Cefaly is an alumna of the Playwrights' Arena cohort at Arena Stage, a recipient of the Walter E. Dakin Fellowship from the Sewanee Writers Conference, and a Dramatist Guild Foundation Traveling Master. She is published by Concord Theatricals, Smith & Kraus, and Applause Books. Her plays have been produced by Cincinnati Playhouse, Florida Studio, Florida Rep, Gulfshore Playhouse, Signature Theatre, and many others. Then, Meta is walking back their content moderation, giving hate speech more of a chance to thrive on their platforms. The hosts debate what this will mean for advertisers and Meta employees alike. And finally, New York City has at last implemented its congestion pricing. On Sunday, December 1st, the world will come together to honor and recognize World AIDS Day 2024, “Take the rights path: My health, my right”, a day dedicated to remembering those we've lost, celebrating the resilience of those living with HIV, and recommitting ourselves to the fight against this global epidemic. This day is not just a time for reflection but a call to action—a reminder that while significant progress has been made in treatment, awareness, and prevention, the work is far from over. By recognizing this day, we not only combat the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS but also reaffirm our collective responsibility to ensure equitable access to healthcare, education, and support for all. Together, we can continue to move closer to a future free of HIV/AIDS. In “WE SEE YOU”, meet Dr. Maurice O'Brian Franklin, a distinguished Public Policy and Public Administration Adjunct Professor at California State University, Northridge. Currently, he holds pivotal positions, including membership in Manhattan's Community Board 10, where he represents Central Harlem and provides leadership in the Landmark and Transportation, Health and Human Service Committee. He is also the Second Vice-President of the Harlem Hospital Community Advisory Board, a Board member of the Prince Hall Medical Foundation, and the Chair of Health and Wellness for the founding Chapter of One Hundred Black Men in Harlem. Additionally, Dr. Franklin serves as a community advisor to the City University of New York, Graduate Center's Harlem Strong Community Mental Health Project. Recognized for his influential public opinion columns, Dr. Franklin received accolades from the Oklahoma Press Awards in 2023 for his article critiquing the police killing of Tyre Nichols, underscoring his commitment to social justice and advocacy. We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS Gus T. Renegade is on the second - and substantially longer - portion of his California pilgrimage. Now in San Francisco, Gus has been able to research the Peoples Temple, Zebra Murders and the assassination of Dr. Marcus Foster - all of which is rooted in Bay Area history. Gus has also been more mindful of the presidential election since escaping Los Angles. Vice President Kamala Harris worked in the District Attorney's Office hear in the 415, but recent reports show here California support is lagging. In Florida, an 18-year-old White teen was arrested after brandishing a machete in front of election workers. Gus T. hosted this program live from the main branch of the San Francisco Library after an afternoon robust researching. Santa Cruz, CA), is an artist working in Los Angeles. She received her BFA from California College of the Arts, San Francisco, where she took interdisciplinary classes in both fashion and painting. Join Ethan as he breaks down the Denver Nuggets incredible comeback win tonight against the Los Angeles Lakers 101-99. Jamal Murray hit a beautiful buzzer-beater over Anthony Davis to complete the comeback over the Lakers. For someone who was having as poor of a game as he was, the team had complete trust in Jamal Murray to take some big shots in the 4th quarter and then take the biggest shot of the game. There was no doubt that when Jamal Murray took that shot, it was going in the second it left his hand. His poor shooting game goes out the window with that shot. The Nuggets improve to 2-0 in the series as they head to Los Angeles attempting to improve to 3-0 on Thursday. The Lakers actually played really well tonight, with Anthony Davis scoring 32 points, LeBron scoring 26 points, and Russell scoring 23. So their big three combined for 81 points tonight, but it just was not enough. Even with a poor shooting game for the Denver Nuggets, it did not matter. The Denver Nuggets absolutely broke the Lakers with this win tonight. Ben Stein and co-host Judah Friedman are joined by former Trump EPA chief of staff Mandy Gunasekara to discuss the latest data revealing something we've all known a long time: many votes cast and counted in the 2020 election were fraudulent and Rasmussen has found the most compelling evidence. Plus, we discussed the breakdown in the middle east by virtue of Team Biden bolstering Iran and belittling Israel, at every turn. Also, why Defund the Police was a dangerous (and dumb) idea, how it continues to ruin communities, and is pushing more black voters towards republicans. We also fit in the dangerous anti-semitic trends, ESG, abortion and so much more.
