Just the Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach
171 How Consistency can Make or Break Your Podcast Success

Just the Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 29, 2022 5:21

Podcasters often think of their schedule when they think about consistency - and it's true, it is important to deliver your podcast on a regular basis. But, that's not the only way to benefit from being consistent with your podcast. In this episode, I outline three ways you need to be consistent if you want your show to be a success. Here they are: Publish Regularly The first way is, you guessed it, showing up when you say you will. That means, if you have a weekly podcast that comes out on Thursdays, then every Thursday you better be dropping an episode. If you've done a good job of serving your listener, then they've subscribed and look forward to your show each week. They may even make it part of their routine - you're their Thursday commute to work show! Yes, this is actually happening! Or, at least it will be if you are consistent. Show Up Authentically The second level of consistency is you. You need to show up the same way each time. I'm going to be blunt here - if you listen to my show regularly then you know I'm usually pretty blunt — if someone subscribes because they love your energy and then the next time you're half asleep or angry as hell, they WILL unsubscribe. They don't owe you anything. But, if you are your authentic self every time, they'll keep coming back for more. And that is how you build your authority because the more you some up authentically and consistently, the more your listener feels like they know you. So, be consistent with your performance to attract and keep subscribers. Deliver on Your Podcast Promise The final level of consistency is the most important. Consistently serve your listener. Consistently deliver on your promise - you know that thing you promised you would serve your listener every time they show up? You have to be consistent with this. You can't promise to give them, say, bonsai tips and then suddenly want to share your cabbage soup recipe or dive into politics. They didn't sign up for that. You have to serve your listener every single time. This level of value consistency will keep them subscribed - and even better, it will have them sharing what you do with the world. They won't do that if they can't trust that you will deliver every time, consistently. Consistency Matters! Think about how you discover new podcasts. Someone suggests it to you or you find it through search. You listen to one episode (if you get past the first few minutes). If you like it, you might listen to another. If that holds up, then you might subscribe. Once you've been subscribed for a while, you might tell more people. But, if at any time, the experience changes - the show messes with the schedule too much and becomes unreliable, the host stops showing up authentically, or they switch up the content too much - then you're gone. You're on to the next one. Not a second thought.  Consistency in your publishing, performance and promise is how you will turn listeners into subscribers and subscribers into raving fans.  Staying consistent with your schedule is the easiest part of this whole equation. If you're disciplined, you can make it happen. Nailing your performance and delivering on your promise every time, well that might take a bit of work… especially if you've never worked on your delivery or figured out what your promise is.  I can help with all three of these things. Decoding Product-Led Growth: Todd Olson on PLG & Nailing the Customer Experience

If you adopt a product-led growth model, will that take jobs away from your salespeople? The answer may surprise you. Today's guest, Todd Olson, says that a PLG strategy and optimization will allow space for salespeople to become much more effective and efficient. Todd is co-founder and CEO of Pendo, a platform that accelerates and deepens software product adoption. He's also the author of the book, “The Product-Led Organization: Drive Growth By Putting Product at the Center of Your Customer Experience.” In today's episode, Todd says when companies utilize all of what product-led growth has to offer, then they will become much more efficient, communicative, and better at adapting to the ever-changing digital landscape. Press play to hear Todd's thoughts on…Creating a Holistic User Experience“Within a product team, there needs to be really, really good communication because the last thing you want is like some growth team trying to drive people top of funnel in and convert them while another team is trying to do self-service and somehow they collide and they're just constantly messaging users all the time and just confusing them. So there needs to be this more holistic kind of user journey idea to make sure that whatever the user's seeing is just an overarching stitched-together experience.”Keep Experimenting Until You Nail It“If it's a feature in your product that is very differentiating, that you believe sets you apart from everyone else and you believe it's one of the core reasons that people use your product, that's one where I think there's really value in driving a lot of experimentation. There's value in collecting feedback. There's value in not only shipping it, but then leaving space in your roadmap for what we call fast feedback or follow up work, where we iterate for potentially sprints, months, quarters, until we feel like we've nailed it.”

Starting out in Self Storage is no easy feat. We talk all the time about the finances and the underwriting and all the “prep work” that needs to be done before you attempt to acquire a facility. But now, you've done that, or maybe you aren't in a position to wait any longer. You have to start looking for that first facility deal. In this episode, we hear from Cameron, who went from loads of debt and 0 facilities, to over $30 million property valuations in just 2 years. When I met him, he was enthusiastic about the industry, but still harbored the fear and the uncertainty that we all experience when investing. He started learning all about the industry (and even joined my Inner Circle mentorship group), and made the jump to buy that first deal. What exactly does it take to make that jump? To go all-in on that first deal? What factors do you need to consider, and what fears do you need to overcome? Don't miss this amazing episode with Cameron! Lock and Code
How student surveillance fails everyone

Last month, when Malwarebytes published joint research with 1Password about the online habits of parents and teenagers today, we spoke with a Bay Area high school graduate on the Lock and Code podcast about how she spends her days online and what she thinks are the hardest parts about growing up with the Internet. And while we learned a lot in that episode—about time management, about comparing one's self to others, and about what gets lost when kids swap in-person time with online time—we didn't touch on an increasingly concerning issue affecting millions of children and teenagers today: Student surveillance. Nailing down the numbers on the use of surveillance technologies in schools today is nearly impossible, as the types and the capabilities of student surveillance software are many.  There's the surveillance of students' messages to one another in things like emails or chats. There's the surveillance of their public posts, on platforms like Twitter or Instagram. There are even tools that claim they can integrate directly with Google products, like Google Docs, to try to scan for worrying language about self-harm, or harm towards others, or drug use. There's also surveillance that requires hardware. Facial recognition technology, paired with high-resolution cameras, is often sold with the promise that it can screen school staff and visitors when they approach a building. Some products even claim to detect emotion in a person's face. Other software, when paired with microphones that are placed within classrooms, claims to detect “aggression.” A shout or a yelp or a belting of anger would, in theory, trigger a warning from these types of monitoring applications, maybe alerting a school administrator to a problem as it is happening. All of these tools count when we talk about student surveillance, and, at least from what has been publicly reported, many forms are growing.  In 2021, the Center for Democracy and Technology surveyed teachers in K through 12 schools and simply asked if their schools used monitoring software: 81 percent said yes.  With numbers like that, it'd be normal to assume that these tools also work. But a wealth of investigative reporting—upon which today's episode is based—reveals that these tools often vastly over-promise their own results. If those promises only concerned, say, drug use, or bullying, or students ditching classes, these failures would already cause concern. But as we explore in today's episode, too many of schools buy and use this software because they think it will help solve a uniquely American problem: School shootings. Today's episode does not contain any graphic depictions of school shootings, but it does discuss details and the topic itself. It was a case of "If the tumour is not removed, it will eventually kill you." After the second one when the operation had been a success it was like a new start. The Global Phenomenon Podcast | for Online Coaches, Consultants and Solopreneurs

Are you having trouble niching down? Maybe the problem is not your niche, maybe it's just your definition of your ideal client avatar. When your ideal client is not clear, everything goes wrong: your offer is off, your messaging doesn't land, and you don't get as many clients.   The worst part of this scenario is that you might be getting some clients, and that validates in your mind that you must be on the right track… but what if the number of clients you're getting is just statistically correct? I mean, if enough people hear your message, someone is bound to go for it. But your business can't run on minimal statistical sign ups. You need your message to land with LOTS of your audience members, so that you can get the right clients all the time! And how do you do that? By ironing out your ideal client FIRST, then everything else. That's what we'll cover in today's episode.   Episode links: 30 Days : 30 Leads Bundle Access the FULL LENGTH interviews with all your favorite online coaches for FREE by requesting access to The Global Phenomenon Podcast UNCUT VAULT! He explains how to troubleshoot this issue if you're dealing with disengaged employees in your own business, and how to then create a company culture that leads to passionate and proactive people.  He offers advice on empowering your employees to take initiative and prioritize their own career development, how to explain your company's vision and mission in a way that inspires your team to live those values in their work, and how to measure employee engagement via surveys.  Here's a Glimpse of What You'll Learn:  00:45 - Hurricane Ian fallout  06:25 - Don't drain your pool during a storm  08:36 - Defining “employee engagement”  10:34 - Engaged versus disengaged employees  12:44 - Key drivers of employee engagement  14:17 - Nailing the onboarding process  21:58 - The role of managers play in engagement  27:17 - How to improve employee engagement  29:40 - Developing self-awareness  33:26 - How to measure engagement  37:45 - Creating a survey to help improve engagement  Sponsors:  NPP  Connect with Guest:  Website  Facebook  LinkedIn  Connect with Pool Chasers:  Website  Instagram  Facebook  Facebook Group  Twitter  YouTube  Patreon    Key Quotes from Episode:  Only 33% of U.S. workers are actually engaged in their role. About half are just showing up. The remaining 17% are actively disengaged.  Engaged employees have a clear expectation of what their work is. Add in pay that is competitive for the role and other ancillary benefits that the company has, whether it's medical or dental. But most of it comes down to their direct relationship with their supervisor and knowing what they're supposed to do.  Engagement starts in the recruiting process. It starts in building a relationship with someone we're bringing onboard.

Why Imaginative Storytelling Sells with Janice B Gordon, Ep #318

Sales Reinvented

Buyers can read the features and benefits of products and services. They don't need salespeople to tell them that. What do they need? Someone to help them imagine what the solution will feel like on the other side of the buying process. Storytelling helps the buyer relate the proposed solution to the buyer's problem. It helps them believe that there is a solution and they gain confidence in you. When you tell stories, it activates oxytocin and makes people feel good. Storytelling fits the way humans are wired and that's how you should communicate. Learn more about Janice's imaginative storytelling process in this episode of Sales Reinvented! Outline of This Episode [0:52] Why storytelling is an important skill to possess [2:27] Why anyone can become a great storyteller [4:25] The ingredients of a story that sells [6:16] Attributes of a great storyteller [8:09] Ways to improve your storytelling abilities [9:30] Top 3 storytelling dos and top 3 don'ts [13:26] Change the way you engage with your audience The ingredients of a story that sells Everyone knows how successful Apple has been. They have a program called the three “Fs” of empathy: feel, felt, found. It's the key to their storytelling. Does your buyer or audience empathize through the medium of storytelling? Do they see themselves in the story and say, “That's me!” Or, “I've had that experience?”  When you get these responses, you'll know that your stories are empathizing with your audience. You can't just tell a story. People need to engage with it. It must be relatable. When you use dialogue, it makes it more engaging. Nailing the delivery can make the difference. So whenever you get the chance, practice your stories on people you know. Even if you're a gifted storyteller, you need to maintain your skills. Janice points out that something happens in your life every day. Even if they're personal stories, they can still be relatable to an individual buyer. Write down something that made you laugh, was unusual, or was memorable so when you're looking for a story to tell, you'll be able to find them. Attributes of a great storyteller The key attribute Janice believes is necessary is relatability. People need to see themselves as the hero of your story. Storytelling must contain novelty; something new. You're selling them a solution that they don't know about. Get them to imagine the new thing and relate to it. A great way to do that is to use the customer's or buyer's language.  Storytelling enables the buyer to feel comfortable with your new solution. It doesn't feel as scary when they can imagine it and see themselves in it. And if they don't see themselves as the champion of the story, you've missed the mark.  Top 3 storytelling dos and top 3 don'ts What are some of Janice's top storytelling tips?  Add intriguing dialog to your stories—but don't mimic accents if you do them poorly. If you're mimicking the buyer's accent and they think you're doing a poor job—or are mocking them—they will disengage. Stick to your own accent.  Practice your stories with family, friends, and coworkers.  Where do you pause in your story? Amend your story by using pauses to add dramatic effect. It changes the emphasis and helps you get the transformation across.  Don't put your product in the story or yourself as the hero. The customer is always the hero. It helps them relate and see that there is a solution to their problem. Don't use jargon and marketing speak. If you do, your story won't feel personal or authentic. Use simple language when you tell stories.  Stories are always based in truth. Never make up a story to fit what you want to sell.  Change the way you engage with your audience Janice started working with a publishing company that was losing customers to new competition in their space. When Janice was brought in to consult, she immediately noticed they were trying to sell themselves based on features and benefits.  So Janice convinced salespeople to create stories of what they thought their customers were thinking when they were explaining features and benefits. They realized that they weren't telling the stories their customers needed to hear. You have to stand in the shoes of your customers. When you are able to see things from their perspective, you'll have a revelation that can transform the way you sell. You want your customer to say, “If they can do that, I can do that too.”  It just takes a little bit of work to move away from features and benefits and get your customer to imagine the future. What happened when they changed the way they engaged with their customers? The key is to say your numbers with confidence, in person. Avoid writing up a big fancy proposal that has everything and then send it over and hope and pray that it's going to work out.  You can lower the scope if the price is too high. You get the verbal commitment if it's good, but either way, have the conversation in person. In the next video, we will be going into the topic of formal processes. Avoid writing up a big fancy proposal that has everything and then send it over and hope and pray that it's going to work out.  You can lower the scope if the price is too high. You get the verbal commitment if it's good, but either way, have the conversation in person. In the next video, we will be going into the topic of formal processes. Regardless of who you work with, you can use Building Everything Together in your formal processes and I'll show you how to do that. If Rod Farvard had grown to be a few inches taller, we might be watching him contend for a rebound on the basketball court instead of toeing the line at some of ultrarunning's biggest races. After his hoop dreams fell short, Rod found trail running by way of triathlon, two sports that rewarded his ability to flatly outwork his competition in spades. So, we sat down with Rod exactly a week removed from finishing 5th American at this year's Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc to talk about how he handles such a high training volume; his first time racing on an international stage; how having a full-time job helps fuel his running; and much more. Get SMART: How to Attain Your Goals

Ponderings from the Perch

If your goals aren't written down, they're just hopes and dreams. Goals take strategy, and one of the best strategies on the market is SMART goals.  CEO and Little Bird Momma, Priscilla McKinney and Executive VP, Ashley Le Blanc talk shop about SMART goals and they break down S-M-A-R-T with cheerleader levels of exuberance. SMART goals is a system that is not only strategic but is repeatable. Nailing your goals this year is great, but achieving all your goals for the next five years? Now, that's fantastic. “S” stands for specific. Instead of thinking in vague, lofty, idealistic terms get nitty-gritty with your goals. Get as specific as possible. Use numbers. Put a number on a “good” salary bonus - an actual number of new clients you want to onboard each quarter. Go ahead and make numbers your new BFF. “M” stands for measurable. If you can't measure it, then you won't be able to accurately track your progress. Plus, the beauty of measurement is that it gives you all the glorious possibilities of celebrating small wins— we all need every “W” we get! The magic of measurement also gives you, as Priscilla puts it, “permission to tweak the strategy as you go.” If you can measure it, you can chart your results and adjust as you need along the way. “A” stands for attainable. You have a goal, but is it really attainable? A good question to ask yourself is, “Can I attain this goal within my desired timeframe?” Also, consider asking others for their insights and advice. After all, this is common practice in business— consulting strategists, coaches, and colleagues. If you have some SMART goals that aren't professional in nature, ask a spouse, partner, parent, or friend. Just make sure you choose who to ask wisely, certain people are in our lives to hype us up and dream big with us, and others are there to be our guardrails, offering us more caution and prudence. “R” stands for relevant. Don't create goals to check them off your to-do list for the year. Don't create goals because they're popular, trendy goals. Don't create goals that are based on what everyone else thinks you should be doing. Create goals that are relevant to you, and are in alignment with who you want to be, what career you want to have, and where you believe your company should be going. “T” stands for timely. Regardless of whether you are a self-diagnosed procrastinator or not, timelines matter. Timelines motivate us to take steps forward. They're the binding agent in the recipe. Don't just have a date of completion on your timeline. Mark dates down on your calendar for the halfway point, or when a key thing needs to be checked off the list to work you closer to completion. To-do lists are our favorite. So is Trello— which Priscilla advocates that the “T” could also stand for. Without a clear game plan goals are really just wishful thinking. Ep #36 Have you ever worked really hard at work to get a promotion or raise just to go unnoticed and overlooked? This can be the worst feeling ever and often discourage many people from putting in more effort in the future. Oftentimes, going the extra mile is not enough—in order to truly stand out, it feels like we have to go another extra nine miles.Oftentimes, going the extra mile is not enough—in order to truly stand out, it feels like we have to go another extra nine miles. But this doesn't have to be the case—rather, you need a strategic plan to increase your likelihood of getting noticed at work (and no, it doesn't include doubling down and taking on more work than you can handle). This week on the Budget Divas podcast, my guest is Steven Foust of NCO Success Academy. Steven served 13-years on active duty in the United States Army. After leaving the active service, he joined the United States Army Reserve and completed an additional 8 years in multiple leadership roles before retiring from the Army with more than 20-years of total service. In this episode, Steven shares his strategy tips on how to get noticed at work. Main takeaways: making sure that you have meaningful 1-on-1's with your supervisor, creating important connections with them, and being intentional of what you ask of your supervisor regarding performance evaluations, room for improvement, and showing your commitment. To learn more about Steven, visit his website at https://www.ncoonfire.com/

You've taken my free course and know all about doable hunger but ... it didn't click like magic. I bet you're beating yourself up because you keep forgetting to ask yourself, 'am I hungry' before you head to the vending machine for your daily snickers at work. Maybe last night you got distracted by the dinner conversation. Before you know it, your plate was clean and you got pissed because you didn't ask yourself, 'have I had enough?' yet again. NEWS FLASH It's normal. You're not supposed to get doable hunger right away. Listen, we've been trained from a young age that we should eat more. What did your parents say? "are you sure you're done eating because we're not going to be eating again until dinner?" "you haven't eaten enough. Quit getting distracted and take a few more bites." "finish what's on your plate and then you can go play." As we were growing up, our brains internalized that the body must be wrong and trained us to tune it out. Combine what we learned growing up with dieting (where an app tells you that you've eaten all your points for the day BUT you're starving)... It's no wonder why so many of us no longer use our bodies as a tool to tell us when we're hungry or when we've had enough. The point is ... Eating when you aren't hungry isn't a terrible thing. What IS terrible (and will stop you from making progress and make you more apt to quit) is when you talk to yourself like an asshole. It took time for us to tune our bodies out, and it's going to take the THREE THINGS I reveal in this week's 10-minute podcast to tune it back in.  I promise it's not willpower that will help you lose weight. It's figuring out how to keep going when shit doesn't go the way you planned. And I'm dedicated to helping you figure it out this week.
