Finish Your Breakfast (5.20.2026): Family, there is always a lot of baseball to talk about, but it's not every day that the Knicks come back from down 22 in the second half to win Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, so let's go, Knicks. In baseball, I think there has been a record number of inside-the-park home runs so far this season. James Wood hit a grand slam inside job, and Corbin Carroll got one too (not shown). Xavier Edwards is now Sammy Sosa. And the Brewers are back in first place (go figure).

In this episode, former Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Scott Karl traces his path from Carlsbad standout to big league starter to financial advisor. He swaps stories with Jeff about Bandon Dunes and his move from California to Lake Norman, then dives into his career, getting a last-minute shot after the '94 strike, surviving as a finesse pitcher in a power era, facing legends like Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, and Sammy Sosa, and taking the mound during the 1998 home run chase. Scott shares how he lost roughly 70% of his portfolio in the dot-com bust while still playing, what it taught him about risk and advisors, and how it pushed him into wealth management. He explains why many athletes blow through life-changing money, how he builds portfolios with buffered ETFs, structured notes, and private credit, and how he manages expectations around upside, downside, and liquidity. The conversation widens to NIL, parents effectively betting travel-ball costs on scholarships, and the risk of turning college sports into a money race. Scott also talks about raising two Division I volleyball players, the mental side of high performance, and how those lessons carry into investing, before closing with his favorite baseball cities and parks, from Wrigley day games to the old Jake in Cleveland and nostalgic nights at Dodger Stadium. Baseball's back for the summer of 2026 and what better way to get in the mood than to take a look at one of the most electrifying sports stories of all time...the 1998 Major League Baseball Home Run Record Chase. This epic chase to break the hollowed home run record started off with 2 known power houses , Ken Griffey Jr. and Mark McGwire chasing Roger Maris' hollowed record the previous 4 seasons .These previous outings  injected excitement back in to the sport after the catastrophic MLB strike of 1994 that cut off Griffey's record pace by 50 games and saw the cancelation of the World Series.  Fans tuned out in droves  and baseball's favor was at an all time low. Then by June of 1998 a little known Sammy Sosa threw his cap in to the race to make it a 3 man race to 62 HR's by season end. Griffey would cool down ("only" hitting 56 homers ) but Big Mac and Sammy would go neck and neck and surpass the record at 70 and 66 HR's by seasons end in dramatic exciting fashion. On this episode of Kenny The Sports Guy Podcast, Kenny dives into one of baseball's most debated legacies — the career of Sammy Sosa. Once one of the most electrifying sluggers in the game, Sosa captivated fans during the historic home run chase with Mark McGwire during the 1998 season, helping bring baseball back into the spotlight after the 1994–95 Major League Baseball strike. But despite hitting 609 career home runs, winning the 1998 NL MVP, and becoming a global icon with the Chicago Cubs, Sosa still remains on the outside looking in when it comes to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Why hasn't one of the most prolific power hitters in history been inducted? Kenny examines the numbers, the controversy surrounding baseball's steroid era, and the complicated legacy that has kept Sosa out of Cooperstown. Is he a Hall of Famer who has been unfairly judged, or does the era he played in define how history remembers him? Join Kenny as he breaks down The Hall of Famer That Wasn't: Sammy Sosa. ⚾

Send a textA first-round pick, a hometown heart, and a league in flux. We sit down with Kevin Orie to unpack a career shaped by grit, timing, and the unforgiving glare of Wrigley Field. From kicking rocks out of infields in Pittsburgh to a private tryout at Wrigley where he sprinted the bases after BP on instinct, Kevin's story tracks the highs and hard lessons of a young player dropped into a franchise starving for a solution at third base. The rookie season hit like a wave: an 0–14 start, the pressure to transform into a power bat behind Sammy Sosa, and the quiet squeeze of the steroid era altering not just bodies but recovery and confidence. Kevin doesn't hedge. He breaks down how mindset, workload, and the drumbeat of expectations can change a player's identity in weeks. He remembers a shoulder separation that killed a September call-up, a quad tear after a two-mile treadmill test, and a late cut in L.A. when the Beltre controversy closed a door at the buzzer. Through it all, there were anchors: Jim Leyland lighting up the tunnel in St. Louis as the Marlins went back-to-back-to-back-to-back, and Don Baylor's simple inside-pitch drill that later unlocked a swing he didn't know he had.We trace the journeyman years—out clauses, selling himself to third base coaches mid-game, cleanup roles on loaded Triple-A rosters that didn't lead to a phone call—and the eventual return to Chicago on unfinished business. Kevin reveals the difference better development and clearer roles might have made, and how today's strength and swing tech would have sped up his learning curve. Off the field, he opens up about raising three daughters after losing his wife, pivoting into hotel investments and commercial real estate through a recession, and staying in the game with Pirates pre/post on The Fan to keep those clubhouse threads alive.Come for the dugout stories and stay for the clarity about pressure, identity, and resilience. If you've ever wondered how a career can tilt in three weeks—or how a single drill can change a season—this one hits home.

It’s Thanksgiving, which means we’re stuffing ourselves instead of the episode schedule. While we’re gone, enjoy one of our favorite episodes from earlier this season. ----- In this fiery episode of the Team of Rivals Podcast, Ron, Elliott, and Pete tear into the latest MLB drama with all the fire and flair you’d expect. It kicks off with Ron going off on the Dodgers' controversial signing of Roki Sasaki, sparking a heated debate about the growing imbalance in the game. Ron’s so fed up with baseball’s direction, he might just quit being a fan altogether. The guys then stumble upon a shocking discovery – another podcast using the Team of Rivals name! Naturally, they debate whether to send in the lawyers or just invite the copycats on for a showdown. They dive into the absurdity of not even Googling your podcast name before launching and the lengths people will go for some lazy branding. Things take a turn when Pete rips into Cubs fans for rolling out the red carpet for Sammy Sosa’s return at this weekend’s Cubs Convention. Pete’s not having it, especially with Sammy’s nonstop thirst for attention – he’s fired up, to say the least. The mood lightens as the trio shifts gears to honor the legendary Bob Uecker, sharing some of their favorite stories and clips from his career. Ueck’s humor and wit made him a beloved icon in the world of baseball broadcasting, and the guys give him the shout-out he deserves. Finally, the guys wrap things up with a chat about the Chicago Bears’ coaching search, tossing around names like Mike McCarthy and wondering if the team can finally find a leader who’ll bring some much-needed success. It's a jam-packed episode full of rants, laughs, and some seriously hot takes. You won’t want to miss it!

Ellen Adair and Eric Gilde discuss the 2001 movie "Hardball." They introduce the film (1:34), with an overview of the story, the cast, and filmmakers, and review the 20-80 baseball scouting grades for rating the film, with a new metaphor (8:14). In Amount of Baseball (17:50), the scouts initially disagree, but slightly convince each other. Ellen has two potential player comps. Baseball Accuracy (25:26) compares this Little League play to other films, with just a couple of editorial / geographical issues. Ellen defends Frank Thomas's honor and digs in on Sammy Sosa's consecutive homers, and records by Ken Griffey Jr, Don Mattingly, and Kevin Mench. That is not Wrigley. Those are not NBA games. Luis Garcia's dance step is considered. Storytelling (39:23) is a real challenge, when the entire inveterate gambler storyline does not work. Plus, white savior problems, a very confusing moral, and a complete lack of necessary exposition. There are so many unanswered questions. How does he earn their trust? Why does G-Baby have to die? Eulogy issues, uniform issues. At long last, the Score Tool (1:24:13) is only a partial respite, with some small problems of its own. They consider some of the soundtrack songs, including "Ghetto," "Hardball," "Big Poppa," "Where the Party At," and R. Kelly. Acting (1:30:21) considers the ceiling and floor of a slightly mis-cast Keanu Reeves. Diane Lane was trying, John Hawkes had an impossible task, D.B. Sweeney deserves better. Young actors Michael B. Jordan, Bryan Hearne, Julian Griffith, and DeWayne Warren almost save the movie. Neither Delightfulness of Catcher (1:39:26) or Delightfulness of Announcer (1:40:27) offer much. In Lack of Misogyny (1:41:00), they discuss the insipidity of the lame romantic subplot. No spoilers on the following segments: Yes or No (1:45:06), Six Degrees of Baseball (1:48:56), Favorite Moment (1:50:43) Least Favorite Moment (1:53:00), Scene We Would Have Liked to See (1:54:54), Dreamiest Player (1:56:50), Favorite Performance (1:57:09), and Next Time (2:00:32).  Join Our Discord & Support The Show: PL+ | PL Pro - Get 15% off Yearly with code PODCASTProud member of the Pitcher List Fantasy Baseball Podcast Network Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. How are you going to be here with us if you believe that we're being controlled by them?  The Infinite Inning is a journey to the past to understand the present using baseball as our time machine. Baseball, America's brighter mirror, often reflects, anticipates, and even mocks the stories we tell ourselves about our world today. Baseball Prospectus's Steven Goldman discusses the game's present, past, and future with forays outside the foul lines to the culture at large. Expect history, politics, stats, and frequent Casey Stengel quotations. Along the way, we'll try to solve the puzzle that is the Infinite Inning: How do you find the joy in life when you can't get anybody out?

Send us a textThe Bums are back in the rail yard with S5:E0135 — and the top begins with the Bums giving thanks and praise for the return of regular season NFL football; a spitting contest ensues with Jalen Carter's ejection, leaving the Eagle's D short-handed vs. Dem Boys; the Bums face a strange quandary, watching JF1 in Jets garb and serial douchebag A-A-Ron “Horseface” Rodgers donning Pittsburgh black and gold — a dilemma ensues; take turns to Junior Varsity football (aka College Football), as the Longhorns get their nuts snipped by the Ohio cannabis leaves, the Golden Dumbers fall short, and SMU is nailed to the cross in the Jesus Bowl; talk turns to late season MLB — as the Cubbies induct Sammy Sosa and Derek Lee into their team HoF (Eddie doesn't care); the MLB playoff and wildcard race starts to take shape despite in the shadow of the Dodger's vs. Orioles near-no-hit; Angel Angst runs rampant amongst WNBA players and fans (along with neon colored dildos); and close with foul ball etiquette not being followed, and the memes aren't disappointing. The bottom half cracks off with another infamous beer review with a French Canadian brew from Quebec's micro brasserie Dieu Du Ciel and their “Fenetre Sur Les Tropique” (ABV 5.0%), a hazy blonde pale ale that is rich in Citra, Mosaic and Motueka hops — an easy drinker that isn't too sweet (everyone rejoices); Paddy and Rocky visit the Salt Shed on a school night to see the Red Clay Strays, following a delicious pregame dinner at Ada; meanwhile, Eddie and Company enjoy a set delivered by the Henry True Band at the G Man, with a few familiar faces; Genny Tacos “tries” to order a drink at G Man (and Eddie isn't having it); the praise for Blue Ash Farm bourbon continues; another Eddie chow report features Chicago's Bodega Sur; binge streaming updates with Dept Q, Smoke and Stick, and close with a Rocky-flavored grill review — highlighting Spider Grill's Huntsman—a hybrid kettle/kamado masterpiece.   The Bums are on the cusp of hitting 5,000 downloads, and we're just as surprised as you are. Recorded on September 7th, 2025 at B.O.M. northwest headquarters ‘The Eagle's Nest' in Chicago, IL USA — another al fresco edition.

No athlete wishes for an injury, but when Kurt Ainsworth's bad shoulder derailed his professional pitching career, it created a big opportunity. Kurt and two partners started a wooden bat company in his backyard, bringing their intimate knowledge of baseball to every bat they sold. Soon, big-name players like Sammy Sosa were swinging them, but Kurt knew they had to expand to aluminum bats to reach the wider field of non-professional players. The company faced a near death experience when the NCAA decertified its bats for being too powerful, but eventually regained its footing. In 2013, Marucci Sports was acquired for over half a billion dollars; and next year, Marucci will slide past Louisville Slugger to become the official bats of Major League Baseball.
