Melinda Long had written books before but when she discovered that at the time there were very few children's books about pirates, she decided to write one. About the same time her book was to come out, Disney released Pirates of the Caribbean. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. In this episode: How Melinda got her book published The process of writing a children's book How her work took on a life of it's own via a sequel and a play Thank you so much for tuning in (or back into) the show, this is my first episode as host of this wonderful ship that Phil Johnson built. While he has provided so much support and training to have me take over the show, this first effort has all the marks of "what is this guy thinking?!?" But we have to start somewhere. The interview is lovely, Melinda couldn't have been a better first guest for me, I hope you tune in to listen to this and all upcoming episodes as I get better at this. In today’s episode of Just the Tips, Dean and I talk with a serial entrepreneur who has such a fascinating and surprising background, you’re going to want to hear everything she has to say. Melinda Wittstock, CEO and founder of social marketing firm Verifeed. If you’re unsure what your ROI is on your social accounts, and even unsure of whether you’re reaching your ideal audience to begin with, you need to listen to this episode. Melinda is so far ahead of the curve when it comes to analyzing and understanding social media, this episode could have a huge impact on your business. A born entrepreneur with an eye on what’s next Melinda told Dean and me how her grandmother was actually the first to see in her the entrepreneurial spirit. At the age of 5 she went around to her neighbors and sold them tickets to a ballet performance she was putting on by herself, and she charged her dad with finding 100 seats for it. And her grandmother looked her in the eye and said, “Melinda, you’re disruptive.” Of course, it would be years later before “disruptive” was a business buzzword, but Melinda was living it from Day One. She continued in that vein as she went through college, creating an advertising department and distribution system for her student newspaper, and going on to be a business reporter for the Times of London by the age of 22. Melinda, quite simply, gets things done, and you’ll want to hear her story in this episode of Just the Tips. Stop talking to the wrong people on social media Social media is everywhere, but it’s so hard to tell who’s who, who’s legit, and who might actually be interested in what you’re putting out into the world. Melinda’s firm Verifeed is a “social intelligence” firm, which provides a real-time barometer of what’s being discussed on social media, and by whom. So for instance, say you own a natural supplement company. You may want to find people who are discussing or liking natural remedies, or yoga, or some other related interest. Now go on Twitter and try to do that yourself. Verifeed actually sorts that information for you, so you can talk directly to your ideal customers. How does it do that? You’ll want to listen to this episode of Just the Tips to find out. “Turning social media from a cost center to a profit center” Melinda says something in this episode that I think we all know, but rarely put into words. If you want to get return on your social—whether that’s revenue or simply followers and audience growth—you have to speak with a human voice. Brands that speak with an authentic human voice vastly outperform those that have a corporate voice on social, says Melinda. In fact, Melinda believes in that principle so much, that Verifeed’s entire business model is based around its ROA, or Return on Authenticity, Score. As she tells it, her company combines the human element—understanding clients’ businesses and ideal customers—with a sophisticated machine learning, artificial intelligence program that scans social media for influencers, and helps businesses see where their efforts are paying off. It’s a mind-blowing process that you have to hear her explain to believe. Give give give give ask Because this show is called Just the Tips, we had to ask Melinda how a company can know if it’s being authentic. What are the qualities of an authentic message? As Melinda tells it, you have to really know and live your “why,” why you’re doing what you’re doing. And then from there, you have to have a genuine interest in your customers. What are they interested in? What do they enjoy and why do they like the things that relate to your business? A big part of that, she says, it’s understanding it’s about your customers, about them, and not about you. So the old method of just broadcasting about yourself doesn’t work. What does work? Well, you’ll want to listen to find out. Outline of This Episode [3:00] How Melinda got started on this path at the age of 5 [10:20] The challenges of social media [13:00] How to get return on your social [15:15] What’s behind the Return on Authenticity? What does it take to whether an art critique and come out the other side ready to continue to create? How do you receive criticism and move forward? I had the pleasure to sit down with the artist, Melinda Cootsona. In our conversation, Melinda opened up about how she transitioned from her work in interior design to painting, how she organized her very first open studio, why it’s important to put yourself out there early, her work with cold wax, and so much more! I know that artists like you will get a lot of enjoyment out of Melinda’s distinct perspective and her helpful advice to budding artists. What it’s like to organize and hold your first open studio. Have you ever held an open studio for your artwork? What was it like? What kind of feedback did you receive? How early in your career did you hold it? Artist Melinda Cootsona held her first open studio early on in her career. She held the open studio in her home and enjoyed the feedback via purchases and responses from her viewers. She’s had several since that first one and encourages artists getting started to go for it and hold an open studio as soon as they have a good collection of work to display. What can you learn from Melinda’s experience? How to receive criticism and move forward. How do you receive a critique of your artwork? Do you seek them out and look forward to learning from them or do you struggle with receiving them constructively? My guest, Melinda Cootsona was candid enough to open up and share from her perspective and how she faced critiques of her artwork. Melinda says that she experiences a sort of detachment from the criticism that she hears regarding her work. She doesn’t take the criticism personally and encourages artists to do all they can to cultivate that sort of healthy detachment that keeps them from taking the critiques personally. What has been your experience with criticism? Why it’s important to connect with a mentor. Do you have people in your circle that you go to and receive feedback on your artwork? Are there other artists that you are in contact with whose opinion you can trust? Artist Melinda Cootsona shared with me during our conversation that she has relied heavily on mentors as she has progressed in her career. She also encourages artists who are just getting started to take the initiative and connect with a mentor as soon as possible. Melinda says that connecting with a mentor can have a huge impact on an artist's ability to get feedback, push toward goals, and expand their perspectives. Have you connected with a mentor? What was your experience? Overcoming self-doubt and the downward spiral. What do you do when you run into self-doubt and the occasional downward spiral that can plague the experience of an artist. Are there best practices that have helped you address this difficulty? My guest, Melinda Cootsona took the time in our conversation to open up about her own experience with self-doubt and the downward spiral. There is two point that Melinda touches on in addressing this difficulty among artists; first, she says it’s important to understand that every artist goes through this, you are not alone. Second, Melinda makes the point that the only way to the work is through the work, meaning, if you want to break out of the downward spiral and figure out what to do next, you’ve just got to start working. Can you relate to Melinda’s perspective? Share what’s worked for you! Outline of This Episode [1:00] I introduce my guest, Melinda Cootsona. She tried to negotiate with her boss at her corporate job so that she could work from home but the president of the company wasn’t onboard. She worked out an arrangement to leave the company to start her own business but was then able to land her old company as her first client. Over time her client base continued to grow until it grew to the point where she had to decision. She had to decide whether to go all in on that business and hire a large staff to run the business or go back to the corporate world where she could theoretically have a more manageable work life and not have work consume her life. She dove back into the corporate world with the attitude that she was going to make as much money as possible. She had great success, worked her way up the corporate ladder, made great money and basically worked herself into the proverbial “Golden Handcuffs” She started to feel the pull of the entrepreneurial life again. She viewed it as a sign and her permission slip to go after her dreams. She went back into consulting but this time for larger clients and really focused on networking within her own community. It was at one of these local networking events that someone mentioned how she should connect with Ever Gonzalez. She "said yes" to the opportunity and called him that night. They met the next day and Outlier was born! In This Episode You Will Learn How a lay off literally answered her prayers. In this episode I have the great opportunity to interview Melinda Miller (@mmiller7571). I have followed her for a long time on Twitter, and I loved the podcast she did with @ScottElias called Practical Principals. That great podcast partly inspired me to start this podcast. I still haven't found a podcast that talks about the real issues that are facing to Our conversation covers these topics: How she gets teachers on board with technology. How she allows teachers to filter out what she says and when. She gives her thoughts on requirements for teacher's blogs, which are a requirement for her. How Melinda deals with the roadblocks of implementing new things (including technology). How she knows how hard to push her teachers, and what to focus on when she is pushing her teachers. How she allows her faculty to talk to her about when she is pushing too hard. How she implemented 1:1 Chromebooks in 4th grade when a bunch of other stuff was coming down the pike. How she prepares for the beginning of a new school year. (And here is the ASCD article on her flipped faculty meeting.) Keep your flipped faculty meetings short, to the point, and give teachers plenty of time to look at the information. Most important tip for starting flipped facutly meetings. How important it is to have video or audio to help people not misunderstand what they are doing wrong.
