Cole Hatter wanted to make a difference in the world so he pursued becoming a firefighter until a terrible accident stole his health and his dreams. In our conversation Cole tells us about his struggle to overcome this serious injury and the loss of his firefighter dreams by starting a highly lucrative real estate investment business with his dad. This week’s podcast features my interview with James Clear from http://jamesclear.com/. It’s basically a mini course on transforming your habits and self improvement for entrepreneurs, athletes and creatives. James is one of my favorite online personalities and his blog is one of the few that I read religiously. He is a entrepreneur, weight lifter, photographer and an expert on transforming your habits. He writes about psychology and habit formation as it applies to business, entrepreneurship, health and fitness, and creativity. I was actually pretty nervous about interviewing James. In fact, immediately following the interview, I was pretty disappointed in myself because I wasn’t sure I had crushed the interview. I beat myself up pretty bad! I felt like I had blown my big chance to interview one of my online idols. I didn’t even listen back to the interview for weeks. I sat on it because I was embarrassed that I had fucked it up. But recently I forced myself to sit down and listen to it. Guess what I found? It’s good...Really, really good! I’m not saying I was good but James was great and most importantly the information was truly valuable. It’s jam packed with strategies and tactics that you can start applying today to transform negative behaviors and easily build new, positive habits that will truly transform your life and business. "10 Minutes to Transform Your Habits" Here’s Some of the Highlights Keystone Habits James explains that a Keystone Habit is a behavior that helps pull the rest of your life in line. We discuss that for him that habit is weightlifting and for me it’s getting up early. Morning Rituals Morning rituals are key because you can get your important stuff done before the urgencies of the day hit and while your will power is still at it’s peak. Habits vs. Routines James makes a distinction between habits (such as biting your nails) and routines (such as going to the gym). We discuss how you can make it easier to do those routines by making the beginning of the behavior more automatic. For example if you want to run 2 miles when you wake up, lay your running shoes out and prep your water bottle the night before...then you can just quickly slip on your shoes, grab your water and head out the door without much thinking or effort. “It’s sort of like an on ramp for your behavior. By making the beginning more mindless and automatic, you make it easier to follow through.” “We often think motivation is something you need to feel before you get started but what we really need is to just make it more automatic to get started.” “Typically we don’t fail after getting started. We fail to get started at all!” “Motivation often comes after you begin not before.” Behavior vs Results In the beginning, the most important thing is to build the behavior not get the result. It helps to focus on building the behavior of becoming the type of person who works out and doesn’t miss a workout first then worry about the performance and outcome. Systems vs. Goals Most people are 90% goals/results focused and 10% systems focused. James makes a persuasive argument as to why it should be the other way around. “The goals will show up anyway if you commit to the system” He discusses three ways that systems are more powerful than goals. Short Term Feedback Loops “The best strategy for long term behavior change is short term feedback” Seth Godin “Identity Votes” “Each time you take an action, It is a vote for the type of person you are and the identity you have.” Environment Change and Designing for Laziness How can you structure your environment to make the lazy or automatic changes better? “It’s really easy to make better choices when you are surrounded by them.” We discuss all these topics and much more so please check out the episode and look for my series of actionable mini lessons on the blog soon. This Monday Motivation podcast episode is about overcoming the "C" Word...Comfortable. Let's face it, Change is easy when you are miserable and your back is against the wall. The challenge of the second half comeback is that most of us are fairly comfortable. You've spent the past 15-20+ years of our lives building a decent life for yourself and your family. Your back isn't against the wall. It's against a comfortable couch! As a result, you quickly lose the desire and ability to step out of your comfort zone. you're afraid to risk your comfortable life. Your risk muscle gets weak. You get soft. You're comfortable. Stuck. Hopes and dreams on the back burner. [shadowbox]You're fucking wasting your life sitting on a couch in a subdivision watching t.v.![/shadowbox] I hope that scares the shit out of you! Let's do something about it. It's time to bust out of this life sucking comfort zone! Here are a few of the key takeaways and lessons from this episode: The best way to escape the comfort zone is to simply start practicing stepping out of the comfort zone. Take small steps out of your comfort zone and take them often. Rebuild your risk muscle. Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Don't worry about the outcome. Improving your ability to step out of your comfort zone IS the outcome. Pretty much everything you want in life and business lies just outside of your comfort zone...You just need to step outside and grab it! If the sum of your life is based on the decisions you make and the actions you take then you are living an unfulfilled life mostly because you are unwilling to be a little uncomfortable. Many people go to their graves full of regrets and unfulfilled dreams simply because they didn't want to be a little uncomfortable. Most people say they would take a bullet, literally give their life, for their family but yet most won't regularly do the things that make them a little uncomfortable...That's fucking crazy! Your mission for the week is simply to practice stepping out of your comfort zone. Pay attention and recognize the times that you are playing small and clinging to "comfortable". Take small steps outside of your comfort zone. Feel the discomfort and do it anyway. Act like your life depends on it. Act like your families future depends on it....because it does! On This Solo Episode of Second Half Comeback, I talk about the mistakes I made and lessons I learned during my first six months in business. My hope is that you'll learn from my silly mistakes and achieve your Second Half Comeback in record time! Here are a few of the key takeaway lessons from this episode: Have a Plan. An imperfect plan, well executed, is still better than no plan. Have a start plan. stop wasting time trying to find the perfect plan. Just have a plan and get started. Now, practice the habit of just sitting your ass in a chair and doing the work...day after day, week after week. Execute your plan. Consistency Counts. Having a consistent publishing schedule matters. Honestly, I don't know why but it does. I was inconsistent and my growth suffered. Consistency of effort, work, focus is EVERYTHING! Taking action only leads to success if you do it consistently and if you're able to force yourself to do it even when you're not feeling it. So the magic happens when you combine the two lessons above: Plan on being consistent. Plan on grinding...plan on simply putting your ass in the chair and working on your imperfect plan, day after day after day! Model-Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Model what's already working. After you gain some traction and learn what the hell you're doing...then and only then you can innovate and add your own unique spin. Having tons of connections, followers and "friends" is great but it is essential that you intentionally seek out and connect deeply with a small group of passionate, giving, like minded rockstars. Find your team. Recruit your inner circle. This may be the single biggest determinant of your success in business and life [shadowbox]If you're the average of the five people you spend the most time with...Don't waste your fucking time with average people![/shadowbox] Action Step: Deliberately start looking for extraordinary people to join your inner circle. Go above and beyond with your efforts to connect. Give freely. Ask for help and take note of who steps up for you. Work on this everyday until you have a rock solid inner circle. On the latest episode of Second Half Comeback, I have a conversation with adventurer and author, Ian Usher from ianusher.com. In 2008, Ian Usher sold his "entire life" on Ebay to tackle his bucket list of lifetime goals. He now inspires other people to achieve their goals. Ian set a goal to accomplish a 100 item "bucket list" in 100 weeks! In the following years Ian managed to accomplish 93 Items from his 100 item list. Here's a quick video compilation of some of his adventures: Ian has written a great book about his journey called A Life Sold. In 2011 Ian even went on to buy his own island in the Caribbean. He later wrote a book about that experience called Paradise Delayed. In our conversation, we discuss the background and details of his story and highlight several super valuable takeaway lessons that we can incorporate into our own second half comeback's. Here are a few quotes and key lessons learned: Embrace "plan B". It's the end goal that matters. How you get there doesn't truly matter. "Constant stepping out of your comfort zone makes you more comfortable at...stepping out of your comfort zone!" Just take step #1. You don't have to have the whole journey planned out...just the first 3,4,5 steps then steps 6,7,8... will reveal themselves. The best way to overcome the voice of resistance in your head is to just take the first step. "You can plan forever and nothing is going to happen if you don't take that first step and actually physically start on whatever it is that you want to do." We also talk about the importance of starting to believe that "I am the type of person who does "X" (travels, takes risk, writes books, builds businesses, etc.) He also emphasizes the value of putting yourself and your ambitions out into the world, making them public so there is an added element of pressure and accountability. Most importantly, we discuss how everything, big or small, starts as just a seed of an idea. Ian's brilliant advice for accomplishing your big goals in life is to: First: Just take small baby steps immediately and continue with consistent progress on each "next step: Then: Build in a tipping point or point of "no return" which is essentially a big step that is very hard to turn back from. We finish our conversation by talking about his most recent travels across the U.S. in an R.V. and his future plans to travel China and teach english. In this solo episode of Second Half Comeback I recap some of my favorite moments and takeaway lessons from my recent trip to Nick Unsworth's Ignite Conference. In the episode I talk about what a great job Nick and his team did with the conference but instead of rambling on about it here, I'll just let you listen to the episode. I'm going to use these show notes to just dive right into the takeaway lessons and to provide a few of the links mentioned in the episode...so let's get right to it! Actually , first let me direct you to Nick's website in case you aren't familiar with him and his brand: Nick Unsworth: Life on fire Here's the website for the Ignite conference: Ignite Conference Ok, back to my takeaways from the conference. The conference itself was a three day event that was basically divided so that Day 1 was about "Mindset", Day 2 was about "Marketing" and Day 3 was about "Relationships/Love". Most of my big breakthroughs came on day 1 which is good because somehow I rambled for 30+ minutes just talking about day 1 so i decided to limit this episode to just day 1 lessons. If you've listened to any of my recent podcast episodes, you may know that I've been struggling a bit, both in my personal life and with the direction of the podcast. As far as my struggles with the podcast go, I've mostly been struggling with doubts, fears and the dreaded "Imposter Syndrome". So the day 1 mindset content was of great interest to me. By the end of day 1, I had a couple massive breakthroughs. Here are quick summaries of the two big breakthroughs from day 1 of the Ignite Conference (honestly, It's just easier to listen to me talk about them in the podcast episode and check out the video of Nick talking about getting "in-state".) Finding your "Moment on Fire" and learning how to get "in-state" Nick talked at length about finding your "moment on fire" and then guided us through an exercise. The idea is to think of a time in your life that you felt truly powerful, unstoppable, on fire! Close your eyes. Visualize this moment of triumph in vivid detail. Remember how you felt. Remember how your body felt. How were you standing? What were you thinking? When you visualize this moment in vivid detail, how does it make you feel? Can you tap back into that moment...that feeling of power? Practice until you can. Figure out a physical cue that you can use to trigger this memory...to trigger this feeling of power. Once you have mastered this skill, you will be able to use your trigger to bring yourself back into this powerful state whenever you need. Go listen to the episode. It will make much more sense and I tell you about my moment of fire during a division 1 college lacrosse game...Fuck, that was a great moment! Anyway, here's the link to Nick Unsworth doing a much better job describing this process: Moment on fire Breaking Boards, Destroying Fears and Reviving Our Dreams My most transformational moment of the conference came the evening of day 1. There was supposed to be a fire walk, Tony Robbins style, but apparently the local fire marshall took a shit on that idea so the event transformed to a glass walk. A glass walk is just what it sounds like. You walk across a bed of broken glass in your bare feet. But there was a twist. After you walked across the glass, you were challenged to break a board with your bare hands. The idea was that you would write your biggest obstacle, your biggest fear on the board...and then smash it. the idea was to literally break through your fears. The funny thing was that I wasn't at all nervous about the glass walk but I was super stressed about smashing the board. We were divided into groups and there were maybe 10 people in line before me to do the walk and board break. Sure enough the first 7 or 8 people struggled to break their boards! I was getting more and more stressed that I would fail to break the board on my first attempt. Finally, it was my turn! To hear my description of what happened, listen to the episode (approx. 17:19 into the episode). Here's my broken board: So my big takeaway from this board breaking exercise was that I've been letting my fears and negative self talk become a barrier between me and a better life...a better life for my son, a better life for my wife. This exercise helped me realize that when I truly and intensely focus and bring the full force of my frustration and passion, I will smash through every fucking barrier that stands between my family and a better life! That is a powerful and life changing lesson! When I combine this lesson with my new found skill for getting "in state", I've got a recipe for success and serious transformation. So I hope these lessons resonate with you and you can incorporate them in your own life. Let's get focused, "in state" and smash through our fears together! On today’s episode of Second Half Comeback, I interview author, blogger and speaker, Andy Traub from takepermission.com and author of The Early to Rise Experience (learn to rise early in 30 days). I’ve been a fan of Andy’s work ever since I watched an interview with him from Deacon Bradley’s Life Stoked. I totally relate to Andy’s blunt style and to how he seems to focus on taking care of his family first. I’m a huge fan of The Early to Rise Experience and have successfully implemented a number of his strategies to help take charge of my life by getting up early. Here are some of the key points and lessons from the Interview: Andy talks about how the book was inspired by one of his favorite books called “The Traveler’s Gift” by Andy Andrews and by his participation in Jeff Goins’ Tribe Writers course. Andy and I discuss how he actually hates getting up early but loves “being up early”. Andy emphasizes the key point that “victory begins at night”. He’s not telling us to get less sleep. He’s saying that the time you spend at night is not productive time versus the morning when we are fresh and full of energy. He points out that no one ever gets up early to waste time watching reality t.v. but that is often what we do at night when we are tired. “Your ideas are up at 5 a.m. but until now you’ve been asleep so you’ve missed them!” How getting up early allows us to “start our day with a victory”. “Life is not complicated. It’s what you do with your time.” Andy talks about how when his life sucks, it’s because he sucks. In other words, when he’s not being disciplined and getting up early to work on the important things in his life, his life sucks but when he starts his day early by doing his most important work... his life is better. “We think that life is this big thing. No it’s not...It’s what we do tomorrow morning!” I mention how one of my favorite tips is that when the alarm goes off, “get in the habit of putting your feet on the floor and pushing (otherwise known as standing)”...in other words, focus on the habit of just standing up as soon as the alarm goes off. It’s much harder to go back to bed once you’ve overcome the hurdle of just getting out of the warm bed. Andy talks about the idea of planning incentives for getting up early: Coffee ready to go when you get up, lay out favorite book to read, lay out clothes to go for a beautiful walk, etc. He mentions the tip that he invested in super comfortable $70 slippers! Early morning is magic time, use it to accomplish something important. "Stress isn’t up at 5 am. Stress doesn’t get up till like 8am so get up before stress.” Build in some accountability or a way to “put some skin in the game”. Make it a challenge, make it public, put something on the line like have a bet with a friend. “Smirk, because you just sucker punched the day”. “I’ve never met a man that I respected who was the last person up in his house.” Andy finishes up by praising YOU with this final quote… “I appreciate you for being intentional about your life….If you want to win at life you need to be intentional. Anybody who listened to the last 30 minutes is intentional about their lives...Well done! You care about your life...Bravo! On today's episode of Second Half Comeback, Greg Hickman tells us how to use daily rituals and systems to make sure we get our most important shit done everyday. Greg is best known as The mobile marketing expert and for his brand Mobile Mixed. He is host of the Mobile Mixed podcast and formally of the Leaving Corporate podcast. He also blogs about his journey at greghickman.me. He is also a speaker and business coach. He was my business coach for a few months and was instrumental in helping me finally launch the Second Half Comeback podcast. We began today's interview with a quick overview of his story and background which included some mobile marketing consulting, starting a text messaging marketing company and even returning to the corporate world to work for a large national outdoor retailer while working on building Mobile Mixed on the side. Mobile Mixed is a blog, podcast and training company that teaches small businesses and entrepreneurs how to use mobile marketing to generate leads and sales. Mobile Mixed eventually led to speaking gigs, coaching and numerous other opportunities including leaving his corporate job to work on his business full time. Ironically, after Greg left the corporate world to work on his own business full time, He found it was a struggle to stay focused and consistently work on the important "stuff" in his business. Since then Greg has really become a student of productivity, workflow, and daily rituals. He is always experimenting, tweaking and learning the best systems and rituals to get the important shit done in his business and life. We spend the rest of the interview talking about Greg's workflow and systems with a specific focus on his morning ritual. Here are a few of the highlights from his current routine: Starts his morning with some light stretching, walks his wife to work and often follows with more light exercise. Lately Greg has been focusing on a reading habit. After his morning exercise and shower, he has been trying to read for 30 minutes. He then jumps into the meat and potatoes of his morning routine: He spends some time journaling on his computer using a set list of questions that he is always perfecting. then he plans his day. He has been using the "Zero Based Calendar" system. We spend some time talking about the actual nuts and bolts of system such as apps, websites and software that he uses. (See Links below). We finish by talking about the importance of shifting your mindset from entrepreneur to business owner..."How do i take this thing and turn it into a revenue producing business". Greg also warns us about falling into the trap of comparing ourselves to others and copying other successful people's workflows. Welcome Back to Second Half Comeback and the much belated Episode 14! In this solo episode I take some time to explain why It's been a couple weeks since my last episode. More importantly I talk about the big plans I have for you and the show for the rest of the year. I spend the first part of the show doing my best to be honest about some personal challenges and transparent about some struggles with the direction, purpose and growth of the show. I caught myself falling into a negative mindset where I was giving up on this year already and starting to think about next year! "Next year I'm really going to get my shit together. Next year I'm going to buckle down and give this podcast everything I've got….." Ridiculous! Thankfully I caught myself! I realized there was still 100 days left in the year. Essentially, we were just getting ready to enter the fourth quarter. It's not time to quit on this year. It's time to adopt a "fourth quarter mentality" and finish strong! In Episode 13, I share the earth shattering news that....You are going to die! I explain why your life hangs by a thin fucking thread and how incorporating this "deathbed" mentality into your mindset can put an end to procrastination. I start the episode with a blunt disclaimer that I am no guru or role model. I'm just a regular guy struggling to improve my life and fighting for my own Second Half Comeback. I've been thinking about this "thin thread" lesson for several years now and still struggle to incorporate it into my daily life on a consistent basis. Full disclosure: I lived this lesson. I believe and understand that my life hangs by a thin fucking thread and I still struggle with procrastination, fear, uncertainty and just general laziness. This doesn't make the lesson less valuable. It just means that redesigning your life can be difficult and we need to figure out a way to incorporate this mindset along with other key lessons into a well rounded game plan for executing our own Second Half Comeback. So honestly, I feel like this is one of those episodes and lessons that just needs to be heard. Please just take a listen and then take a few minutes to ponder the message and what it means for your life. On this episode of Second Half Comeback, I bring you part 2 of my conversation with Akshay Nanavati from Existing 2 Living. As a reminder, Akshay is a U.S. Marine and war veteran as well as an explorer and outdoor adventurer who is on a mission to run across every country in the world! We pick up the conversation as Akshay is telling us about a few of his daily rituals. His rituals tend focus on health and energy. He likes to incorporate green smoothies and daily exercise. He also journals and uses a few different reminder and to-do apps to help him find clarity in his day. He goes on to talk about “priming” your subconscious and truly striving towards clarity of lifestyle. My favorite tip from Akshay was to focus first on having true clarity of lifestyle. What kind of life do you ultimately want to live? What kind of adventures do you want to have? What kind of legacy do you want to leave? Then work backward from that primary goal and create milestones towards that goal. Now, plan and execute only the action items that take you to the next milestone. We talk about the importance of adding elements of “higher mission” to your life as well as focusing on leaving a legacy. Akshay is starting a non-profit foundation that will partner with organizations in each country where he is running to leave a positive impact on the local community. That way his run is ultimately a Higher Mission that will leave a legacy. We talk about the value of using a “meditation on death” philosophy to live your life to the fullest. “Most of us live our lives as if we are never going to die then we die having never really lived”. Finally we talk about what’s next for Akshay and his mission. This September he will be running across 5-7 countries in Europe. He gives us some great advice about tackling a large, intimidating mission. Do the smaller pieces first as you learn the necessary skills and build confidence. For example, He is starting his runs in Europe in the smaller countries while he learns how to manage the logistics and then he will run the larger countries. Also, “ find somebody who has done what you want to do and ask them how they did it”. We finish by talking about the book he is writing. He explains the term “Fearvana” as “a state of unity and bliss without fear that is only achieved through immersion in fear.” This concept helps us turn fear into a positive thing. On Episode 11, We have a great conversation with Akshay Nanavati of Existing 2 Living. Akshay is a Marine and a war veteran who is now also an explorer and adventurer. He is on a mission to run across every country in the world to promote world unity and spread a message of good will. I first became familiar with him when I saw him give a quick talk at World Domination Summit and immediately thought he is a great example of someone making an incredible Second Half Comeback. He begins by telling us about a time in his teens when he became heavily involved with drugs and alcohol and even lost two friends to that destructive lifestyle. Akshay was able to pull himself out of that world and it was actually a scene from the movie “Black Hawk Down” that triggered his desire for self improvement and a life of service. He embarked on a journey of self improvement, joined the Marines and immersed himself in the world of outdoor sports. He served his country in Iraq in 2007-2008 and then returned to the corporate world. He quit that job and spent all his savings to take on the epic challenge of skiing across the second largest ice cap in the world in Greenland dragging a 190 pound sled for 350 miles! He is now on a journey to run across every country in the world. One of the key lessons we discussed was the importance of finding immense clarity of purpose when trying to redesign our lives. Also, taking 100% responsibility for our lives and developing successful habits were key factors found in most success stories. He mentions how daily exercise is a great stepping stone to building other positive habits.His story and his journey provide us with some valuable and actionable lessons for our own Second Half Comebacks. Here are a few of the other takeaway lessons from this episode: We can choose “triggers” in our life that will help us make instant and lasting positive changes. He used the movie “Black Hawk Down” to trigger a desire to challenge himself and lead a life of service to others. After returning from Iraq, Akshay struggled with returning to the corporate world and dealing with the stresses of a complicated everyday life that was very different from the simplicity and life or death nature of his life in the Marines. He was eventually diagnosed with PTSD. He learned that he could find solace and peace in the outdoors as well as get some of the same feelings of simplicity, risk and living in the moment that he had while serving in the Marines. We discuss how many people would love to add meaning and challenge to their lives by embarking on some kind of meaningful, epic journey or mission. Akshay gives us some tips on how anyone can start towards their own epic mission. We discuss the four elements of the human experience: mind, body, heart and spirit. He believes that physical challenges are a great way to tap into all four of these elements and this can help us feel true fulfillment and accomplishment. He emphasizes that it’s persevering through pain and hardship that often brings true fulfillment, lessons and happiness. These lessons and clarity can be brought back to our everyday world and applied to business and life. 10 Wes Chapman Pt. 2 on Self Reflection, Keeping it Simple and Building a Self Sustaining Community of Empowered Youth In part 2 of my conversation with Wes Chapman, founder of A Human Project, We discuss a few more of the lessons he has learned as he transformed himself from victim to hero. We talk about the importance of daily rituals and he discusses a few of his favorites including the importance of solitude and self reflection. He emphasizes the benefits of daily simple meditation. The role of writing to stimulate creativity and help you find clarity in your life. The importance of disconnecting. He suggests turning off all technology and simply writing by hand with a pen and paper. This strategy helps you slow down and activates different parts of your brain. If you are right handed, try starting with your right hand but then when you get stuck or are trying to drill down deep switch to your left hand. This helps put you in a child like state because it helps eliminate your need for perfection and motor skill etc. It helps slow you down and process things differently. Who is Melinda Yeaman and What is Outlier Magazine Melinda Yeaman is an online marketing veteran of 15 years who unplugged from her corporate career path to become an entrepreneur and to live an authentic, passionate life. Her experience in graphic & web design, e-commerce, social and tech enables her to fuel success in her own brands as well as those of her clients and associates. Melinda's Story She started working a corporate job in college to help pay for college but it ended up pulling her away from college and she never finished college. So she went on to get married and have kids. She first ventured into the entrepreneurial space because she wanted to be able stay home with her kids. She tried to negotiate with her boss at her corporate job so that she could work from home but the president of the company wasn’t onboard. She worked out an arrangement to leave the company to start her own business but was then able to land her old company as her first client. Over time her client base continued to grow until it grew to the point where she had to decision.She had to decide whether to go all in on that business and hire a large staff to run the business or go back to the corporate world where she could theoretically have a more manageable work life and not have work consume her life. She dove back into the corporate world with the attitude that she was going to make as much money as possible. She had great success, worked her way up the corporate ladder, made great money and basically worked herself into the proverbial “Golden Handcuffs” She started to feel the pull of the entrepreneurial life again. She was planning her exit, listening to podcasts and so unhappy that she literally prayed for an answer. The very next day she got laid off! She viewed it as a sign and her permission slip to go after her dreams. She went back into consulting but this time for larger clients and really focused on networking within her own community. It was at one of these local networking events that someone mentioned how she should connect with Ever Gonzalez. She "said yes" to the opportunity and called him that night. In this solo episode, I talk about a long forgotten promise. A promise that you made and broke. It is the unspoken promise that you made to yourself and your family that someday you will become the man you were meant to be. Have you noticed lately when you tell your family and friends about your “Comeback”, your dreams and aspirations, they seem unimpressed maybe even skeptical? It almost seems like they don’t believe you or don't care. Well, the reason your family, your wife or girlfriend, your close friends don’t fully buy into your dreams is that they don’t trust you. They don’t believe you anymore.You made an unspoken promiseto your young family. You made an unspoken promise to yourself...and you broke that promise. You promised them a certain kind of life, certain dreams. You promised them that you would become the “Man” that you were meant to be! When you were first starting out, you made an unspoken promise to your family. “Stick with me through these hard times and I promise that I will become the man you believe I can be”. “Trust me, someday we will have an extraordinary life”. “Believe in me and I promise that I will bust my ass everyday until we are living the life of our dreams!” I Broke this promise. You broke this promise. We basically lied to the people we love most, to the people who trusted us the most. That is why they don’t trust us completely. That is why they don’t fully buy into our dreams anymore. The reason YOU don’t even believe in your dreams is that you don’t trust yourself. But they haven’t given up on us. Deep down, they still believe in us. Look into your wife’s eyes. Look into your son or daughter’s eyes. Can’t you see they still believe in you? It’s time to acknowledge that you broke this promise and more importantly It’s time to take action and make good on your promise to the people you love most. Broken promises can be mended. But they need to be acknowledged and then they are mended by action. They are mended by rebuilding trust. They are mended by keeping your word and your unspoken promise everyday. The Biggest and Worst Kept Secret to transforming your life On today’s solo episode of Second Half Comeback I talk about the single strategy that has transformed my business and my life. I’ve begun surrounding myself with extraordinary, like minded people. I know. It’s not exactly ground breaking advice is it? We’ve all heard this advice a million times including the now famous quote from Jim Rohn: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with” But I think many of us understand the concept yet fail to execute it because it seems like such a daunting challenge. The idea of eliminating “negative” people from our lives seems big and dramatic. The idea of “networking” with strangers seems intimidating and uncomfortable. I understood the concept but failed to execute it consistently in my own life. Until I took Scott Dinsmore’s Connect with Anyone course. Scott had an amazing concept and quote that changed my mindset forever. He called it “Brain Washing the Impossible” and his quote changed my life: “The fastest way to do something that you don’t think is possible is to spend time around people who are already doing it” Boom! Come on, that’s good shit! It made me realize that a big part of this concept is just about being around people who are doing the things that you want to do. This is important for a number of reasons. The most obvious is that it gives you a team, a tribe, to work with towards a common interest and goal. You can help and support each other. Promote each other. Learn from each other, etc. This is huge and can have a major impact on your life. But the often overlooked reason that this will change your life is that: Surrounding yourself with people who are already doing what you dream of doing shows you that it is possible and this changes everything! So in this episode I talk a little about my early and long struggles of starting a business and changing my life. I explain how I progressed from seeking information to seeking community. I finally learned the value of community, connections and relationships with extraordinary like minded people and I started joining various online groups, masterminds and communities. I also started attending live, in person conferences. This is where I discovered the “Secret Sauce” to transforming your life and business. I learned that making connections and building relationships online and then cementing and growing those relationships through face to face shared experiences at conferences and meet-ups is an absolute game changer. This single strategy will change your life.
