The Context of White Supremacy welcomes University of Virginia history professor Justene Hill Edwards. Classified as a black female, Hill Edwards is a scholar of African-American history, specializing in the history of slavery in the United States. She received her doctorate in History from Princeton University in 2015. We'll discuss her 2024 publication: Savings and Trust: The Rise and Betrayal of the Freedman's Bank. Gus learned about this text from Racist Suspect Calvin Schermerhorn, who visited The C.O.W.S. earlier this year to discuss his research on how Whites have methodically looted the paltry finances of black people for centuries. He mentioned Hill Edwards brilliant work on the demise of the Freedman's Bank. Established in the wake of the Civil War, the bank was supposed to help bedraggled black people crawl from the plantation and pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Instead, Racist Whites stole millions of dollars from poor black people, yet shrewdly blamed it on Frederick Douglass. Whites used a time-tested Racist Code to accomplish their theft. #RacialShowcasing #RacistCode #INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: http://cash.app/$TheCOWS Call: 720.716.7300 Code: 564943#

Pastor Andy continues in his series, "Don't waste the Favor" of God and Plunder the Kingdom of Darkness. Andy focuses on the fact that we can't earn the Favor of God, neither do we 'deserve' it no matter what we do, it is because of the Grace of God.
Dan, Joseph and Riley take a survey of all the ships currently available in Blood & Plunder. Starting with the Canoa and moving all the way through to the Galleon, we take a look at each ship, what it's good at, what makes it unique, which nations it might work especially well for and if it might be a good addition to your fleet.
Pastor Andy continues in his sermon series, "Don't Waste the Favor" of God's Blessings, and Plunder the Kingdom of Darkness. The main text of Matthew 16 reminds us that a wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign that Jesus is God. We are exhorted that repentance is a vital part of the Christian life.

Dr. J Calvin Schermerhorn is a professor of history in the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies at Arizona State University. His books include The Business of Slavery and the Rise of American Capitalism, 1815–1860, and Unrequited Toil: A History of United States Slavery. He lives in Tempe, AZ. The long history of the racial wealth gap in America told through the stories of seven Black families who struggled to build wealth over multiple generationsWealth is central to the American pursuit of happiness and is an overriding measure of well-being. Yet wealth is conspicuously absent from African American households. Why do some 3.5 million Black American families have zero or negative wealth? In The Plunder of Black America: How the Racial Wealth Gap Was Made (Yale UP, 2025) historian Calvin Schermerhorn traces four hundred years of Black dispossession and decapitalization—what Frederick Douglass called plunder—through the stories of families who have strived to earn and keep the fruits of their toils. Their struggles reveal that the ever-evolving strategies to strip Black income and wealth have been critical to sustaining a structure of racialized disadvantage. These accounts also tell of the quiet heroism of those who worked to overcome obstacles and defy the plunder. From the story of Anthony and Mary Johnson, abducted from Angola and brought to Virginia in 1619, to the enslaved Black workers dispossessed by the Custis-Washington family, to Venture Smith (born Broteer Furro), who purchased his freedom, to three generations of a family enslaved in the South who moved north after Emancipation, to the Tulsa massacre and the subprime lending crisis, Schermerhorn shows that we cannot reckon with today's racial wealth inequality without understanding its unrelenting role in American history. Over the past 40 years, the campaign to “get tough on crime” has been redesigned to generate vast revenue streams for governments and corporations. Today, practices that criminalize, police, and punish serve a second purpose as tools of resource extraction, disproportionately targeting low-income communities of color. Legal Plunder by Joshua Page and Joe Soss investigates the origins, operations, and consequences of this enterprise. The authors are joined by a panel of policy makers, researchers, and commentators that span the ideological spectrum from the left to libertarian including Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and George Mason University Law Professor Ilya Somin in an event moderated by University of Minnesota Professor Karen Ho.
In Numbers 31–33, we walk with Israel through some pivotal moments at the very edge of the Promised Land. First, the Lord commands Moses to send the Israelites into battle against the Midianites, the very people who had enticed Israel into sin back in Numbers 25. This becomes Moses' last conquest, a battle where not one of the 12,000 Israelite soldiers is lost, and where we see offerings given in gratitude and purification laws reminding the people of God's holiness. Then, in chapter 32, the tribes of Reuben and Gad ask to settle east of the Jordan River instead of entering the Promised Land. Moses is furious at first, connecting their request to the failure of the ten spies decades earlier that led to forty years of wandering. He fears history will repeat itself. In the end, the tribes agree to help their brothers fight, but their decision becomes a sobering example of settling for less than God's best and making plans outside of His promises. We'll see the long-term effects of this choice ripple throughout Scripture in Joshua, Kings, and the prophets. Finally, chapter 33 gives us a travel log of Israel's wilderness journey — every stop, every camp, every step guided by God's presence. It's a reminder that nothing was wasted, and every mile mattered because He was with them. Together, these chapters highlight God's protection in battle, the danger of half-hearted obedience, and the steady faithfulness of His presence through every season of the journey. Oh, that's so good! For the full episode show notes, please go to https://mfahring.com/numbers-31-33/

We have lots to talk about on this episode! We discuss the Summer of Plunder conclusion, and Garrett's experiences as Gencon and Nashcon before jumping into our main topic: Crew Management. Running a ship well in Blood & Plunder takes some experience and finesse. You have lots of options, and lots of potential problems to manage once you make contact with the enemy. We talk through some of the common pitfalls and give some "expert tips" on building and managing a crew that will work well on your Blood & Plunder ship.
Hello Gaslit Nation listeners! This conversation was recorded before war criminal Putin and convicted felon Trump staged their grotesque spectacle on the blood-red carpet in Alaska. For our analysis of that hellscape—and what it means for Ukraine and democracy defenders everywhere—be sure to check out the recording of the August 18th salon, coming soon to Patreon.com/Gaslit. Thank you for listening and supporting the show! * In Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity, we find a roadmap for fighting oligarchy, injustice, and despair. Historian Marci Shore, author of The Ukrainian Night: An Intimate History of Revolution, reminds us that revolutions rarely begin with grand plans. The 2014 EuroMaidan uprising started with students protesting a classic bait-and-switch. President Viktor Yanukovych, the Ukrainian Trump, ditched a long-promised agreement to move Ukraine closer to the European Union. Instead he took a massive bribe from Russia. When peaceful protesters gathered, Yanukovych sent in his riot police to beat them, like in Russia. This backfired. Their parents showed up. Then their neighbors. Then thousands more across the country. Within days, Kyiv was packed with hundreds of thousands of furious, freezing citizens demanding dignity, decency, and an end to oligarch rule. Yanukovych has been in exile in Russia ever since, awaiting his American counterpart, Trump. August 24 marks 34 years since Ukraine overwhelmingly voted to break free from Kremlin rule and declare its political independence. Ukraine's Independence Day is a reminder to never bet against people who've had enough. As historian Marci Shore shares urgent lessons for us today, saying, “The fact that it can happen at all means that somehow we human beings have that in us. We somehow have that capacity, and we have to cling to that hope.” Marci also discusses the debate many are having in America today: Do we stay or do we go? She and her husband the historian Tim Snyder made headlines when news broke they had relocated to Toronto, for impotant opportunities, ringing an alarm that authoritarian experts had left America. They talk about how the campaign went and what was expected of someone who was not actually in charge of a specific country. We also briefly talk about Oak and Iron. It wouldn't be an episode of Arachne if it didn't include some terrible humor as well. Come aboard and give it a listen! ARRGGG!!!

Against long odds, the Anishinaabeg resisted removal, retaining much of their land in the Old Northwest—what's now Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Their success rested partly on their roles as sellers of natural resources and buyers of trade goods, which made them key players in the political economy of plunder that drove white settlement and US development in the region. But, as Michael Witgen demonstrates in Seeing Red: Indigenous Land, American Expansion, and the Political Economy of Plunder in North America (Omohundro Institute/UNC Press, 2021), the credit for Native persistence rested with the Anishinaabeg themselves. Outnumbering white settlers well into the nineteenth century, they leveraged their political savvy to advance a dual citizenship that enabled mixed-race tribal members to lay claim to a place in US civil society. Telling the stories of mixed-race traders and missionaries, tribal leaders and territorial governors, Witgen challenges our assumptions about the inevitability of US expansion. On this episode, Amber and Erika are joined by Dr. Calvin Schermerhorn, author of “The Plunder of Black America: How the Racial Wealth Gap Was Made”, to discuss the economic status of Black Americans. Despite the propaganda that Black people have less wealth due to poor choices, laziness, and missed opportunities, Dr. Schermerhorn points us to the historical data that clearly demonstrating that Black Americans have been continuously and systematically exploited and de-capitalized through racist laws, racial violence, and outright theft. We also examine Malcolm X's vision for economically independent and vibrant Black communities and the extent to which integration distracted us from building and maintaining wealth within our own communities. Finally, Dr. Schermerhorn helps us identify reasons to be optimistic in the present fight for liberation and steps we can take to keep the past from repeating itself. Rodriguez and Keith are on duty tonight, Producer Joe is (as always) behind the wall and currently 75/25 on whether his WiFi will actually hold up long enough for him to join the misery. Farace is out again—not because he's jumping ship (he'd rather eat a cheesesteak in Philly than wear another team's gear)—but because his absence has sent the Mets into such a tailspin that he's now on a spiritual quest to find answers, a working bullpen, and maybe a few hits with runners in scoring position. The Mets? Well, they just got outscored 30-4 by the Pirates, which is about as fun as a root canal with no anesthesia. The losing streak is now a full-on embarrassment, the offense has completely vanished, and the rotation looks like it was built from spare parts found at a Staten Island garage sale. Citi Field has gone from electric to existential crisis in record time. With the All-Star break mercifully approaching, the guys will break down what (if anything) can save this team. Trade for an actual pitcher? A real bat? Call up the entire Syracuse roster? And of course, no show would be complete without a few dumb takes from Mets fans everywhere—some so bad, you'll wonder if Phillies fans are infiltrating our social media. Will Keith find a stat that makes things look even bleaker? Will Rodriguez manage to say something positive? Will Producer Joe's WiFi finally betray him mid-rant?This is Mets baseball at its most chaotic, most painful, and (if you squint) most entertaining. And just to add to the drama, the Mets have three with the Brewers and then three with the Yankees—all at Citi Field—coming up next week. Let's put it in the books—before the Pirates run off with that, too. #Mets #PiitB #PutItInTheBooks
