This is the second installment of “How Bad Is It,” a recurring series in which the staff writer Andrew Marantz joins Tyler Foggatt to conduct a health check on American democracy. They discuss how Donald Trump has bullied media companies, why it's troubling that some outlets are seeking to settle lawsuits with the Administration, and how the role of social media in public discourse has changed during the second Trump Administration. Plus, an interview with the prominent Hungarian journalist Márton Gulyás, who's on the show to discuss a new bill making its way through the Hungarian parliament which is designed to quell the free press, and what a potential crackdown may tell us about the future of American media. This week's reading: “Donald Trump's Politics of Plunder,” by Evan Osnos “Donald Trump's War on Gender Is Also a War on Government,” by Paisley Currah “The Criminalization of Venezuelan Street Culture,” by Oriana van Praag “J. Fight from Victory: The Strong Man's House Explained | Mark 3:27

Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every single day. And a big shout-out today to Jon David from Evansville, IN. Jon, thank you for being a part of this movement through Project23. You are making a difference for the Gospel. This one's for you. Today, we're looking at Mark 3:27: But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house. — Mark 3:27 Today's verse comes right in the middle of a tense moment. Jesus is facing false accusations from the scribes that he's casting out demons by the power of Satan. And Jesus, in calm authority, responds with a short parable—a one-sentence story packed with power: “No one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man.” Jesus isn't just defending himself with a theoretical example. He's describing what he came to do. What he is going to do—on the Cross. In the imagery, the “strong man” represents Satan. The “house” represents this broken, sin-stained world. And the “plunder”? That's people—souls held captive under the weight of sin and spiritual darkness. What we discover in this bit of cryptic text is that Jesus didn't just come to teach, inspire, or heal. He came to invade enemy territory. To bind the "strong man." To rescue the "plunder" that had been stolen. That is a bold declaration and a prophetic statement about his mission in one sentence. You see, Jesus doesn't negotiate with darkness as the scribes suggested—he overpowers it. And he still does. We don't fight for victory—we fight from it. Why? Because the strong man has been bound. Jesus tied him up at the cross and walked out of the tomb three days later with the keys in hand. So why do you still live like you're a prisoner to sin? So many believers are still walking around like they're stuck in the strong man's house—afraid, anxious, ashamed—when the one who broke in is already leading them out. You are not bound anymore. Sin doesn't own you. Fear doesn't rule you. The accuser has been silenced. So, walk free today. The Stronger Man has come. Live in victory and fight from his victory. ASK THIS: What does the image of the “strong man” reveal about spiritual conflict? How has Jesus already overcome this enemy? Are there areas where you still feel bound by something Jesus already defeated? What would it look like to walk in freedom this week? DO THIS: Name one area where you've been living like a prisoner. Declare today that Jesus has already broken that chain—and ask Him for the faith to walk free. PRAY THIS: Jesus, you are the Stronger One. Thank you for rescuing me from the enemy's grip. Help me live today like someone who's truly free. Amen. PLAY THIS: Rescue Story.

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Calvin Schermerhorn. Classified as a White Man and a graduate of Harvard Divinity School and the University of Virginia, Schermerhorn is a historian of slavery, capitalism, and African American inequality. Weeks ago, he penned a piece deconstructing the local System of White Supremacy that's responsible for hundreds of black homeowners having their housing jeopardized or destroyed by the 2025 California Wildfires. One of the locations with a high population of non-white residents is the “unincorporated” region of Altadena, an area prone to fires yet reserved for non-white people. All of this fits neatly into the massive economic patterns Schermerhorn inspects in his 2025 publication: The Plunder of Black America How the Racial Wealth Gap Was Made. This text examines how generations of Whites have codified the looting of black people. A major component of this Racist codification is keeping black people ignorant and illiterate. Professor Schermerhorn documents how White people across the continent create laws, burn black school houses, and/or loot educational funds designated for black children all with the desired aim of maintaining a mindless, vulnerable population of black people who will be dominated in perpetuity. #MoneyDontMatterTonight #TheCOWS16Years CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Watch the Q&A session here:  https://youtu.be/cjJSWgvHZKwThis lecture puts forth the ethical and economic case for a basic income, enabling financial security and therefore a better quality of life for all. Financial insecurity affects one's ability to make rational decisions – studies show it even lowers short-term IQ – making it even harder to improve one's circumstances in the long run. Furthermore, unlike means-tested social assistance schemes like Universal Credit, a basic income does not involve a severe ‘poverty trap' and thus, contrary to critics, increases the incentive to take low-paying jobs. This lecture includes findings from a series of BI pilots across the world which Dr Standing has been involved in.This lecture was recorded by Guy Standing on 19th March 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Guy Standing is a Professorial Research Associate and former Professor of Development Studies at SOAS University of London. The defendant in the Madeline Soto case, Stephen Sterns, continues to induce shock and display audacity in his jailhouse calls with his all-too accommodating parents, Chris and Debbie Sterns. In more of the calls, we hear Stephen asking each time for another fifty bucks for his commissary account, and his dad seems to have no problem putting the money in the account. Keep in mind that the parents are also paying for the jailhouse calls. So now, they have an extra monthly bill for Stephen--although it's cheaper than paying for his car maintenance, gas, insurance and for his rent and food. The parents also display what appears to be their complete faith in Stephen's story that he was not in the room when Madeline Soto died, and that he's being scapegoated for the crime by others. To continue our New York Toy Fair 2025 interview series, I sit down with Cameron Ring, co-founder of Lost Boy Entertainment.Lost Boy Entertainment is a rising game company that started with just 500 copies of their first game in 2020 and now has products online and in major retailers. The company is composed of 3 cousins who handle everything from designing games to shipping orders and marketing. In our talk Cameron shares how they started small on Amazon, shipping games from their garage and how they eventually expanded into retail. This episode is a great 101 on the power of identifying a market gap, filling a need, and self funding your launch. If you're considering a show like New York Toy Fair might be the best next step for your brand, listen in on why rushing in too soon could actually hurt your business. My favorite takeaway from this interview with Cameron revolves around distribution channels, but you'll have to hit play to find out exactly what was so insightful about that conversation.Listen for These Important Moments![04:40]  - Cameron and his cousins manufactured just 500 copies of their first game Plunder, and after selling out multiple times on Amazon, they realized they had something special on their hands.[08:10] - Learn why Cameron says he values selling in multiple channels for different reasons. [14:39] - How did Cameron and the Lost Boy Entertainment team know that they were ready for New York Toy Fair? Well they started building at smaller shows first.[20:00] - What has been the biggest secret to the success of Lost Boy Entertainment? Was it TikTok marketing, smart distribution, or steady and slow growth? Perhaps all three…Send The Toy Coach Fan Mail!Support the showPopular Masterclass! Nahum 2-3 (NASB) Chapter 21 The one who scatters has come up against you. Man the fortress, watch the road; Strengthen your back, summon all your strength. 2 For the Lord will restore the splendor of Jacob Like the splendor of Israel, Even though devastators have devastated them And destroyed their vine branches. 3 The shields of his mighty men are colored red, The warriors are dressed in scarlet, The chariots are enveloped in flashing steel When he is prepared to march, And the cypress spears are brandished. 4 The chariots race madly in the streets, They rush wildly in the squares, Their appearance is like torches, They dash to and fro like lightning flashes. 5 He remembers his nobles; They stumble in their march, They hurry to her wall, And the mantelet is set up. 6 The gates of the rivers are opened And the palace is dissolved. 7 It is fixed: She is stripped, she is carried away, And her handmaids are moaning like the sound of doves, Beating on their breasts. 8 Though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days, Now they are fleeing; "Stop, stop," But no one turns back. 9 Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! For there is no limit to the treasure-- Wealth from every kind of desirable object. 10 She is emptied! Yes, she is desolate and waste! Hearts are melting and knees knocking! Also anguish is in the whole body And all their faces are grown pale! 11 Where is the den of the lions And the feeding place of the young lions, Where the lion, lioness and lion's cub prowled, With nothing to disturb them? 12 The lion tore enough for his cubs, Killed enough for his lionesses, And filled his lairs with prey And his dens with torn flesh. 13 "Behold, I am against you," declares the Lord of hosts. "I will burn up her chariots in smoke, a sword will devour your young lions; I will cut off your prey from the land, and no longer will the voice of your messengers be heard." Chapter 31 Woe to the bloody city, completely full of lies and pillage; Her prey never departs. 2 The noise of the whip, The noise of the rattling of the wheel, Galloping horses And bounding chariots! 3 Horsemen charging, Swords flashing, spears gleaming, Many slain, a mass of corpses, And countless dead bodies-- They stumble over the dead bodies! 4 All because of the many harlotries of the harlot, The charming one, the mistress of sorceries, Who sells nations by her harlotries And families by her sorceries. 5 "Behold, I am against you," declares the Lord of hosts; "And I will lift up your skirts over your face, And show to the nations your nakedness And to the kingdoms your disgrace. 6 "I will throw filth on you And make you vile, And set you up as a spectacle. 7 "And it will come about that all who see you Will shrink from you and say, 'Nineveh is devastated! Who will grieve for her?' Where will I seek comforters for you?" 8 Are you better than No-amon, Which was situated by the waters of the Nile, With water surrounding her, Whose rampart was the sea, Whose wall consisted of the sea? 9 Ethiopia was her might, And Egypt too, without limits. Put and Lubim were among her helpers. 10 Yet she became an exile, She went into captivity; Also her small children were dashed to pieces At the head of every street; They cast lots for her honorable men, And all her great men were bound with fetters. 11 You too will become drunk, You will be hidden. You too will search for a refuge from the enemy. 12 All your fortifications are fig trees with ripe fruit-- When shaken, they fall into the eater's mouth. 13 Behold, your people are women in your midst! The gates of your land are opened wide to your enemies; Fire consumes your gate bars. 14 Draw for yourself water for the siege! Strengthen your fortifications! Go into the clay and tread the mortar! Take hold of the brick mold! 15 There fire will consume you, The sword will cut you down; It will consume you as the locust does. Multiply yourself like the creeping locust, Multiply yourself like the swarming locust.

Art looting is commonly recognized as a central feature of Nazi expropriation, in both the Third Reich and occupied territories. After the war, the famed Monuments Men (and women) recovered several hundred thousand pieces from the Germans' makeshift repositories in churches, castles, and salt mines. Well publicized restitution cases, such as that of Gustav Klimt's luminous painting featured in the film Woman in Gold, illustrate the legacy of Nazi looting in the art world today. But what happened to looted art that was never returned to its rightful owners? In France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, postwar governments appropriated the most coveted unclaimed works for display in museums, embassies, ministries, and other public buildings. Following cultural property norms of the time, the governments created custodianships over the unclaimed pieces, without using archives in their possession to carry out thorough provenance (ownership) research. This policy extended the dispossession of Jewish owners wrought by the Nazis and their collaborators well into the twenty-first century. The custodianships included more than six hundred works in Belgium, five thousand works in the Netherlands, and some two thousand in France. They included paintings by traditional and modern masters, such as Rembrandt, Cranach, Rubens, Van der Weyden, Tiepolo, Picasso, and Matisse. This appropriation of plundered assets endured without controversy until the mid-1990s, when activists and journalists began challenging the governments' right to hold these items, ushering in a period of cultural property litigation that endures to this day. Including interviews that have never before been published, Museum Worthy: Nazi Art Plunder in Postwar Western Europe (Oxford University Press, 2024) by Dr. Elizabeth Campbell deftly examines the appropriation of Nazi art plunder by postwar governments and highlights the increasingly successful postwar art recovery and restitution process. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Eighty years ago, on January 27, 1945, the extermination and concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated by the Soviets. Of the 69,000 Jews deported from France, only 5 percent survived. During World War II, the Nazis looted 100,000 items of cultural property belonging to Jewish families. After the Liberation, some 60,000 stolen works of art were repatriated to France, and 45,000 were handed back to their owners, or to family members who had survived the Holocaust. But 2,200 are still in French museums, as curators continue to search for their rightful owners. FRANCE 24's Claire Paccalin and Stéphanie Trouillard report.

Women who purposefully—or accidentally!—acquired life-changing wealth, good fortune, or influence. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn’t help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we’ll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more. Womanica is hosted by WMN co-founder and award-winning journalist Jenny Kaplan. The bite-sized episodes pack painstakingly researched content into fun, entertaining, and addictive daily adventures. We all know Adolph Hitler as a mediocre artist-turned-genocidal dictator, but did you know that he pulled off the greatest art heist the world has ever seen? As World War II unfolded across Europe, Hitler directed his Nazis to steal countless masterpieces from every country they traversed. He kept his favorites, while others were hidden in castles and salt mines to be unearthed after the war ended. Many of the pieces have never been recovered. "Crimes of the Centuries" is a podcast from Grab Bag Collab exploring forgotten crimes from times past that made a mark and helped change history. In the aftermath of Germany's stunning victories in 1940, the countries of western Europe were economically exploited by Germany. From the level of individual soldiers who stole and purchased at fire sale cost consumer goods that their families in Germany couldn't possibly afford, all the way to the wholesale expropriation of French, Dutch, Belgian and Scandinavian economies by the Nazi state.
