Sol Price is the most influential retailer you've never heard of. A man who never sought the spotlight, but whose legacy and lessons cover the entire landscape of modern retail. Have you ever wondered why you can still buy a hot dog and soda for $1.50 today at Costco? We can thank Sol Price for that. To him, keeping promises to customers mattered more than profit margins. Sam Walton said he borrowed more ideas from Sol Price than anyone else. Jim Sinegal of Costco said, “I didn't learn a lot from Sol. I learned everything.” Jeff Bezos studied him. Home Depot echoed him.  He invented the warehouse club, pioneered membership retail and built two multi-billion-dollar companies. The real lessons aren't about what he built, but how he did it.  This is the story of how a lawyer with no retail experience created an industry, mentored his competition, and proved that nice guys don't always finish last. ------ Approximate Timestamps: (00:00) Introduction (02:01) Early Years (08:29) Starting FedMart (28:33) Price Club (36:19) When Students Surpass the Teacher (42:09) The Teacher's Last Lesson (43:46) Reflections And Lessons ------ Upgrade: Get a hand edited transcripts and ad free experiences along with my thoughts and reflections at the end of every conversation. Kevin Murphy is a master illustrator, portrait artist, and art educator with over 30 years of experience. His career began in 1992 creating commissioned works for National Geographic, LucasArts, Barnes & Noble, Sega, and even the Rolling Stones' Bridges to Babylon tour. In 2001, Kevin transitioned into portraiture and later founded the Art Academy to make professional-level training accessible to everyone. Today, Kevin leads Evolve Artist, an online painting program studied in over 70 countries. What sets his approach apart is a clear, fundamentals-first method that teaches realistic painting like a science—not guesswork. Students of all ages learn to paint confidently through a self-paced, feedback-supported system that emphasizes results over raw “talent.” Kevin's students, including retirees, engineers, and even surgeons, consistently outperform art school graduates with just a fraction of the time typically expected to develop such skills. Kevin Murphy Vroom Vroom Veer Summary Art Education and Career Evolution Kevin shared his career journey, highlighting his transition from an untrained artist to a successful professional in illustration, portrait work, and education. He emphasized the importance of hard work and dedication over natural talent, recounting how he built a school and an online resource to provide accessible art education, which has expanded to 23 brick-and-mortar schools across the US and overseas. Kevin explained that the Evolve program, which is entirely online, focuses on providing structured, skill-building assignments with feedback, creating a supportive community for students worldwide. Breaking the Cycle of Disadvantage Kevin shared his experiences growing up in a tough neighborhood in the Bronx with three brothers, highlighting how his parents, who were not educated, emphasized the importance of education. He discussed how talent and resources often create a feedback loop, using examples from Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" about hockey players in Canada and quarterbacks, illustrating how early advantages can significantly impact an individual's development and opportunities. Kevin also mentioned his own challenges in school, which he attributed to his environment and the lack of resources available to him, emphasizing the importance of access to opportunities for personal and professional growth. Journey From Sports to Art Kevin shared his family background, highlighting his older brother's academic and athletic achievements, including his career in computer science and his athletic potential that was derailed by an injury. Kevin discussed his own educational struggles and preference for individual sports like wrestling, which he pursued due to his competitive nature and desire for personal achievement. He reflected on how his interests evolved from wrestling to art, where he found fulfillment in individual pursuits. Thrill-Seeking Journey to Art Kevin shared his past experiences of seeking thrill and adventure, leading to multiple concussions and injuries from his youth. He discussed how his high pain threshold and need for excitement led him to engage in risky activities, despite his family's concerns. As he aged, Kevin's physical condition deteriorated due to accumulated injuries, and he transitioned from construction work to pursue a career in art. Kevin's Journey From Construction to Publishing Kevin shared his career journey from being a construction worker to becoming a successful book cover illustrator and later a publisher. He described how he taught himself to read and fell in love with science fiction and fantasy, leading him to pursue a career in illustration. Kevin highlighted his notable projects, including working with George R. R. Martin on Game of Thrones and creating a Rolling Stones album cover. He also discussed his experience working with LucasArts on puzzles and toy packaging for Jurassic Park.

When Katharine Graham took over the Washington Post in 1963, she was a shy socialite who'd never run anything. By retirement, she'd taken down a president, ended the most violent strike in a generation, and built one of the best-performing companies in American history. Graham had no training, no experience, not even confidence. Just a newspaper bleeding money and a government that expected her to fall in line. When her editors brought her stolen classified documents, her lawyers begged her not to publish. They said it would destroy the company. She published them anyway. Nixon came after her, attacking her with the full force of the executive. Then Watergate. For nearly a year she was ridiculed and isolated while pursuing the story that would eventually bring down the president.  Graham proved that you can grow into a job that initially seems impossible and no amount of training can substitute for having the right values and the courage to act on them. A troubling statement makes us want to think of exceptions to it that would prove that statement to be wrong.“Outliers are interesting, but they rarely matter,” is a troubling statement, and you may already be thinking of exceptions to it. But it remains true nonetheless. This second statement is also true. “If there were no outliers, there would be no new inventions, no innovations, no progress. We would be trapped forever in the status quo.”These seemingly contradictory statements can both be true because there are two kinds of outliers.Leonardo da Vinci made marvelous art and filled fabulous sketchbooks with his insightful ideas, but he didn't really change anything. He was just an interesting outlier whose mind was ahead of his time.Rare is the outlier who throws a pebble into the ocean of time and shifts the world off its axis. Electricity is harnessed. Computers are invented. Someone connects them and now everyone knows everything all the time.“What distinguishes the past from the present is not biology, nor psychology, but rather technology. If the world has changed, it is because we have changed the world.”– Ezra Klein & Derek Thompson in their new book, AbundanceTechnology changes the world, but persuasion changes hearts and minds.I am an ad writer. When I was in my 20s, I was told,“People never change their mind. If you give a person the same information they were given in the past, they will make the same decision they made in the past. When a person appears to have ‘changed their mind,' what they have really done is made a new decision based on new information.*”Ten years later I realized that those people were trying to use logic to create “persuasion technology.” Their mistake was assuming that people make their decisions logically. But people do not trust new information when it disagrees with their belief system.New information may allow you to win the argument, but it rarely wins the heart. And a person convinced against their will, remains unconvinced, still.Wash away the opinions, bravado, and fluff, and you will find that most people are NOT seeking new information. They are seeking identity reinforcement.Bertrand Russell was a mathematician and a logician. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature eight years before I was born.He said,“If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance with his instincts, he will accept it even on the slenderest evidence.”When your goal is persuasion, don't begin with new information. Begin by agreeing with what they already believe. Meet them where they are. Only then can you hope to lead them to where you want them to go.Abraham Lincoln knew that persuasion is easier when you begin at a point of mutual agreement.“If you would win a man to your cause, first convince him that you are his sincere friend. Therein is a drop of honey that catches his heart, which, say what you will, is the greatest high-road to his reason, and which, when once gained, you will find but little trouble in convincing his judgment of the...

In this episode of the Informed Decisions podcast, I chat with Rob Halligan and Scott Ashmore, co-founders of Shuttle, a platform aiming to democratise access to private equity and venture capital investments.   The conversation dives into the fundamentals of private markets, how they differ from public equity investing, and why early-stage companies often turn to private capital over traditional bank loans. Rob and Scott shed light on the risk-reward profile of venture investing, the importance of diversification, and how Shuttle helps everyday investors participate in an asset class typically reserved for institutions and high-net-worth individuals.   The discussion also explores the mechanics of venture funding - from pre-seed to Series D rounds - highlighting how company valuations are set and the expected timeframes for returns. With Central Bank of Ireland authorisation, Shuttle operates a quarterly investment model, allowing users to gain exposure to a portfolio of vetted startups. The duo outline their vision for the platform, its future expansion into VC fund access, and how it aligns incentives by charging only a modest annual fee and a performance-based profit share.   Key Points: Private vs Public Markets: Private equity involves investing in unlisted companies, offering potentially higher returns but greater risk and illiquidity. Venture Capital Basics: VC is a subset of private equity focused on early-stage, high-growth startups, structured around funding rounds (e.g., Seed, Series A-C). High Risk, High Reward: Venture capital returns follow a power law distribution—few winners generate most of the returns. Diversification is Key: Investors should aim for 50+ holdings to reduce risk; Shuttle structures this via quarterly “drops” of 2–3 companies. Accessibility: Shuttle enables retail investors to participate in venture deals from as little as €250 per quarter. Platform Model: Investors pay €250/year plus a 10% fee only on realised profits, aligning platform and investor interests. Liquidity & Exit: Returns typically take 5–10 years; Shuttle is exploring secondary markets to improve interim liquidity. Market Trends: Private companies are staying private longer; institutional data points to retail access as the next frontier. Educational Focus: Shuttle supports investor understanding through simplified UX, content, and risk-appropriate onboarding. I hope it helps   JoinShuttle.com   Grit by Angela Duckworth – recommended by Rob Halligan. This episode reveals how one small-town tire dealer scaled to $3 billion by turning customers into evangelists and employees into owners. Somewhere between changing his first flat tire and opening his 410th Les Schwab Tire Center, Les discovered something profound: his people weren't just working for him, they were working with him. They weren't building his dream, they were building their own. This episode is a case study on how strategy, incentives, and trust create massive advantages that resources can't buy. When investment bankers offered Schwab billions to sell his empire, he refused after asking himself just one question: “What would I do with the money?” Les Schwab understood something most never learn: the real wealth isn't in what you keep.  Approximate timestamps: Subject to variation due to dynamically inserted ads:  (01:49) Roots   (11:21) In Business  (27:50) Building an Empire  (40:18) Maturation and Legacy  (48:21) Reflections from Les Schwab  (51:22) Lessons from Les Schwab   This episode is for informational purposes only and is based on Pride in Performance: Keep It Going by Les Schwab Check out highlights from this book in our repository, and find key lessons from Schwab here: https://www.fs.blog/knowledge-project-podcast/outliers-les-schwab Upgrade—If you want to hear my thoughts and reflections at the end of all episodes, join our membership: fs.blog/membership and get your own private feed. Realistic fundraising goals: Budgeting for Nonprofits with Maria and Caitlin

Too many small nonprofits build their budgets on optimism alone, dreaming big without the strategy or infrastructure to back it up. This episode is all about why that's a problem, and how to stop the cycle of setting fundraising goals that hurt more than they help. In this episode of The Small Nonprofit, Maria Rio and co-host Caitlin McBride get real about what it means to set realistic, strategic fundraising goals, and what happens when you don't. From pressure-filled board expectations to outlier-year budgeting mistakes, they unpack the ripple effects of extremely optimistic thinking and offer grounded ways to move forward. Want to avoid budget burnout and build goals that actually serve your mission? This episode is your guide. Listen now and share it with your board.  Realistic Fundraising Goals – The Highlights 1. Unrealistic fundraising goals hurt everyone. When goals are set without evidence or planning, it's frustrating and it's harmful. Fundraisers feel like they're being set up to fail, and the community loses access to reliable services. 2. Outlier years aren't a the baseline. Got a huge planned gift or a surge of support during a major global event? Great. But don't build your next budget assuming that lightning will strike twice. 3. The board can't just wish money into existence. When leadership insists on big numbers without offering support or resources, they undermine the very people doing the work. Fundraising isn't magical, it's methodical. 4. Growth means more than dollars. A 40% increase in revenue equals a 40% increase in workload. If you're not adding capacity, you're adding stress. 5. You need to track leading indicators. Revenue is a lagging indicator. Things like donor meetings, emails sent, and stewardship actions are what create that revenue. Track what's in your control. 3 Actionable Tips for Setting Realistic Fundraising Goals: 1. Use real data, not wishful thinking. Look at historical trends, capacity, and the types of revenue you've secured. Don't budget based on what you want to happen, budget based on what's likely. 2. Break down your revenue streams. Separate out grants, major gifts, recurring donors, etc. Goals should be specific to each stream, not one vague number slapped across the board. 3. Consider organizational context. If your staff just turned over, your website crashed last Giving Tuesday, or inflation is affecting your donors, factor that in. Not every year is a growth year. Resources and Links Connect with our host, Maria Rio Connect with our cohost, Caitlin McBride Support our show. At 96 years old, Jimmy Pattison still runs his $16 billion empire personally.  He's built it over 63 years without outside capital or a college degree. He owns 100% of car dealerships, billboards, radio stations—even Ripley's Believe It or Not—with a philosophy of: "No partners, no shareholders, no relatives."  This episode reveals the principles behind one of North America's great private empires: how to build and compound a reputation, why the best deals happen in silence, and what a Japanese bicycle taught him about operational excellence. You'll learn the hidden advantage of selling “souvenir editions” instead of newspapers, how he turned a ghost radio station into a ratings leader overnight, and why he once fired the entire bottom 10% of his staff—then took them out for steak.  Most people play for approval. Pattison plays for permanence through reputation, relentless clarity, and never mistaking flash for fundamentals.  This episode is for informational purposes only and is based on Jimmy: An Autobiography by Jim Pattison and Paul Grescoe.  Check out highlights from these books in our repository, and find key lessons from Pattison here—https://fs.blog/knowledge-project-podcast/outliers-jimmy-pattison/ Approximate timestamps: Subject to variation due to dynamically inserted ads: (00:00) How a Teen Sold Yesterday's News(01:10) Jimmy Pattison's Billion-Dollar Playbook(03:24) The Debt That Built Character(05:41) Part 1: Foundations - The Boy Who Sold Seeds Door-To-Door(06:52) When Victory Becomes a Liability(08:46) The University of Used Cars(10:02) The Art of the Close(13:30) When Business Becomes Theater(15:22) The Price of Independence(16:36) The Pattern(17:44) Part 2: Starting to Build - Back to Zero(18:09) The Price of Independence(20:08) Bleeding Money(21:11) The Secret Weapon(22:11) The Main Street Disaster(23:09) Dead Air to Hot Air(24:33) The Ghost Station(25:40) The Conglomerate Dream(27:03) The Target(28:24) Cold Calling Wall Street(29:35) The Silent Hunt(30:49) The Takeover(31:36) Part 3: Neonex International - Perfect Timing, Wrong Direction(32:09) The Magic Money Machine(34:17) The Toast Order(35:06) The Forbidden Target(36:15) The Christmas Surprise(37:27) The Bluff(38:07) The Unraveling(39:07) The Education(40:27) Part 4: The Jim Pattison Group of Companies - Returning the Paintings(40:49) The Corporate Confession(42:08) The New Operating System(44:01) The Dinner That Changed Everything(46:23) The Great Escape(47:31) The Boy and the Bicycle(49:07) The Quality Revolution(51:14) Part 5: The Empire Builder - Still at the Wheel(51:47) The New Playbook(54:17) The Grocery Gambit(55:13) The Media Monopoly(55:52) The Numbers Game(57:20) The Ultimate Lesson(59:15) Reflections and Lessons Upgrade—If you want to hear my thoughts and reflections at the end of all episodes, join our membership: fs.blog/membership and get your own private feed. Year-to-date, SCHD is sitting at -2.51% while SPY is +2.38% and QQQ is cruising ahead at over +4%. We dig deep into the real numbers, compare performance side-by-side, and ask: is collecting dividends really worth watching your capital shrink? This isn't just about data—it's about perspective. In this video, we break down the illusion of safety in dividend investing, why chasing yield without trend confirmation is a mistake, and how the SCHD chart looks when you actually apply technical signals like the 10/20/50 moving average trend filters. Spoiler alert: it's not a bullish setup. We're also hitting key topics like:➡️ Why SCHD's latest rebalance timing was a disaster➡️ How increased energy sector exposure added volatility➡️ What rising Treasury yields are doing to dividend ETF demand➡️ And whether SCHD is really “defensive” or just dead weightYou'll hear comparisons between SCHD and other options like ESGV, SPYI, QYLD, and short-term T-bill funds that currently yield 4–5% with none of the downside risk tied to equity price drops. We also run SCHD through the Outlier 9 system—our framework for identifying bullish trends and high-probability setups. Spoiler: it's not the Bible.Questions we're breaking down in this episode: Can you “miss” your person forever by making one wrong choice? If you married the wrong person, is your whole life off course now?Where did the idea of “the one” even come from?Do arranged marriages disprove the idea of “soulmates”?Why do so many people marry “the one”… and still get divorced? Is “God told me you're the one” just Christian manipulation?Does God choose our spouse, or do we? And what's our role in that decision? How do you decide if someone is “the one” for you? You'll also hear Daniel's personal story about how waiting for “the one” made this dating life difficult, examples from arranged marriages, and practical ways to shift from chasing perfection to building real connection. If you've ever wrestled with questions like “Did I miss it?” or “What if I marry the wrong person?”, this conversation brings clarity, biblical perspective, and hope.God gave you a mind, a community, and the ability to choose. Most people fear a $43 million debt. Harvey Firestone called it “invigorating.” When his company faced collapse in 1920 and his executives panicked, Firestone seized control. He fired the sales manager, slashed prices 25%, and personally ran the sales department. It worked—not because he managed through fear, but through clarity.   Firestone was the founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company—an outsider who built one of America's iconic industrial empires by doing the opposite of what everyone else did. This episode isn't about tires. It's about how Firestone quietly built one of the great businesses of the 20th century by asking two deceptively simple questions: Is it necessary? Can it be simplified?  This episode breaks down the invisible principles behind Firestone's success: positioning over talent, inputs over outcomes, discipline over drama. If you lead a team or simply want to lead yourself better, this story is a masterclass in building enduring advantages.   This episode is for informational purposes only and is based on Men and Rubber: The Story of Business by Harvey Firestone.  Check out highlights from these books in our repository, and find key lessons from Firestone here—https://fs.blog/knowledge-project-podcast/outliers-harvey-firestone/ (03:00) PART 1: The Best Businessman I Ever Knew(06:50) The Vanilla Extract Lesson(10:23) When Premium Doesn't Matter (12:05) PART 2: Right Beneath the Wheels(14:21) The Back of an Envelope(16:36) If Two of Us Stay, Neither Makes Money(18:39) Betting on what Doesn't Change(20:55) The Accidental Breakfast(24:53) The Third Option (28:19) PART 3: The Innovators Dilemma: Pneumatic Tires(32:24) The Ford Connection: A Partnership of Outsiders(35:23) Navigating the Crisis(37:17) The Underdog's Advantage(39:24) The Million Dollar Milestone(43:10) Weathering the Panic of 1907(45:55) The Simplicity Imperative (51:25) PART 4: The Ship-by-Truck Revolution(54:31) The Boom That Hid Everything(56:11) The 25% Solution(01:01:42) Cutting to the Bone (01:04:25) PART 5: Why He Never Stopped(01:06:54) The Human Element(01:08:09) The Legacy (01:10:05) Reflections, afterthoughts, and lessons Upgrade—If you want to hear my thoughts and reflections at the end of all episodes, join our membership: fs.blog/membership and get your own private feed.
