Welcome to our first-ever Finish More Music podcast series! This five-part series concludes the story I shared last year about my instantaneous and permanent recovery from depression—and how I simultaneously regained my hearing, despite multiple medical professionals telling me it was lost forever. I thought I fully understood what had led me into the darkest time of my life and the reason for my recovery. However, it turned out I had only discovered the tip of the iceberg. The real breakthrough was something much bigger. And, in keeping with the strange twists and turns of this story, it was something mysterious—something that has been discussed since ancient times... In this series, I share this mystery with you, why I am confident it has permanently closed the door on my depression, and how it has led me to live a more expansive, fulfilling, energized, and creative life.
As many of you know, I'm a little over a year away (Lord willing) from completing a Doctor of Ministry degree on spiritual formation in the works of C.S. Lewis. That's why you may have been thinking to yourself, “Man, that guy talks about C.S. Lewis a lot.” Yes, I do. About as much as psychic chai farmer talks about tea leaves, I would imagine. There's a reason I chose Lewis studies, despite my fear that it was a little too “on the nose” for someone like me, and possibly a bit overdeveloped a field anyway. The reason is, I usually can't think of anything without either having read it in one of his books, or else, having thought that I came to it independently, eventually realizing it was there in his works all along. He's a presence in my thought life I can't escape. At some point, you just have to admit that Mr. Miyagi knows karate and start waxing his car. It was Lewis who introduced me to the idea of the Numinous. It's what “awesome” used to mean. It was uncanny before The X-Men. It's not fear, exactly; more like the source of fear. We fear whatever we know to be dangerous. We stand in awe of the Numinous: that terror which we cannot possibly comprehend. Often, we sense that by studying doctrine and behaving ourselves, we can avoid “upsetting” the Numinous and thus avoid dealing with it all together. As if we could tame the ocean itself and send it off on our errands! No, the great beast won't do our bidding, and besides, fear alone doesn't exhaust our experience. There's also a sense of humble gratitude at our invitation to behold the sublime beauty of the thing-which-cannot-be-named-or-otherwise-tamed. What are we to do in the presence of such things? The crisis of our text this week is a failure to reckon with the Numinous. You can be beloved, and brilliant, and on your way up in life, and forget this one thing, and the entire world will crumble around you. David messed around and found out: God is not your little mascot. He is holy. The most radical truth in the world is that He is for you, but this is his idea, not yours. And he's doing it in his way, not yours. I could use an encounter with the Numinous this week. How about you?

I learned a new word during this interview you're about to hear with Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker and the deeply under appreciated singer-songwriter Tucker Zimmerman: Numinous. It means “having a strong religious or spiritual quality; indicating or suggesting the presence of a divinity.” Numinous. That's how Tucker described the experience of recording the album Dance of Love, with Big Thief as his backing band, and the album's producer. Released in October, Dance of Love is a collection of absolutely gorgeous folk tunes, written and amassed by Tucker over many, many years. It's beauty derives not only from what is actually on the album, but also from the spirit behind it — of kindred creative souls finding each other, across generations, across international miles, to make something gentle and singular and true. About twelve minutes into the interview, Adrianne tells the story of how she first heard Tucker's 1980 album Square Dance while getting a tattoo in Colorado. She was instantly mesmerized, and introduced his music to her Big Thief bandmates. They were all baffled that they'd never heard of him before, baffled that he wasn't more well-known, in general. Now 83 years old, Tucker began releasing albums back in 1969, and there are so many treasures to be discovered in his extensive catalog since then. In addition to discussing the collaboration and how it happened, they each share how they first connected with their own creativity as a child, and I couldn't help but notice how profoundly their current artistic approach carries the long reverberation of their first, naive awareness of their creative side. It was a joy to get these two back together (along with Tucker's wife, Marie Claire, who has a cameo at the beginning) for a conversation I feel honored to have witnessed. Tucker will be on tour in early 2025. Get tickets here. Adrianne's latest solo album, Bright Future, is nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Folk Album.

He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Metaphysical Sciences, a BSc in Geography, MSc in Psychology, MSc in Management, a diploma in Acting and is a certified Trauma Specialist. Ancient Manifestation Secrets teaches a brand - new manifestation method of manifesting with the energy field! It's the first book to claim that the law of attraction is not the most powerful law in the Universe and that not all desires can manifest. Instead, it draws from ancient Greek and Egyptian philosophy to introduce the 7 manifestation laws of the Universe, a framework for choosing the right desires to manifest, and the importance of taking inspired action rather than over - depending on the Universe. Rather than reiterating the usual manifestation practices, Ancient Manifestation Secrets introduces never - before - taught cognitive and energetic processes and meditations. Based on The Kybalion and Hermetic philosophy, the book puts forth a new, 5 - step manifestation process that challenges the prevalent 3 - step formula taught by most books (i.e. , Ask, Believe, Receive). Ancient Manifestation Secrets also disputes the common belief that negative emotions work against manifestation. Conversely, it incorporates inner work into the manifestation process and provides readers with both cognitive and energetic processes for expressing and transmuting their negative emotions, rather than repressing or denying them. Ancient Manifestation Secrets covers: • The 7 Hermetic Universal laws of manifestation • A brand - new method of manifesting with the energy field • Choosing desires that are aligned with your life purpose • An eye - movement therapy process for releasing limiting beliefs • A 10 - day manifestation challenge to manifest specific desires Get the book today! https://georgelizos.com/ancientmanifestationsecrets Visit George's website: https://georgelizos.com/ George's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/georgelizos/ My Law of Positivism Healing Oracle card deck: https://www.lawofpositivism.com/healingoracle.html Visit Law of Positivism: https://www.instagram.com/lawofpositivism/ Website: https://www.lawofpositivism.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lawofpositivism/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/lawofpositivism
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 10, 2024 is: numinous NOO-muh-nus adjective Numinous is a formal, often literary, word that typically describes things that have a mysterious or spiritual quality. It can also describe something holy or something that appeals to one's aesthetic sense. // We were overcome by the numinous atmosphere of the catacombs. // The artist's sculptures dominate the space, their numinous presence welcoming museum-goers to a foreign world. See the entry > Examples: “The breakthrough for me was the idea of embedding the hymnlike harmonies of Charles Ives's sublime ‘The Unanswered Question' within my music. Ives gives this hushed hymn to a string orchestra, playing pianississimo throughout. A lone trumpet, seeming to come from another planet, asks ‘the question' repeatedly—five notes without a text but full of numinous meaning.” — John Adams, The New Yorker, 4 Dec. 2023 Did you know? When people of the 1600s were ruminating on an adjective to reflect their awe of the mystical and supernatural elements of their experiences, they gave the nod to numinous, and quite aptly so. Numinous comes from the Latin word numen, which can mean both “a nod of the head” and “divine will,” the latter sense suggesting a figurative divine nod indicating approval or command. (English users were already using the noun numen, a direct borrowing from Latin, to refer to a spiritual force or influence associated with a particular place or phenomenon.) Numinous is not a common or everyday word, which seems fitting for one used to describe what is far from quotidian, and instead part of the realm of the spiritual, the holy, or the transcendent.

Deerlady is the name of the band led by singer and bassist Mali Obomsawin and guitarist and singer Magdalena Abrego. Mali was part of the folk rock trio called Lula Wiles; then she released her album of Indigenous jazz called Sweet Tooth in 2022, drawing heavily on her Abenaki heritage. Magdalena, a Chicago-born guitarist whose parents migrated from Mexico and Puerto Rico, has played with the minimalism-meets-jazz collective known as Numinous, as well as the improvising sax player Allison Burik. In January, the two of them released their first album together, with the cheeky title Greatest Hits, “a collection of songs about intimacy under colonialism by Mali Obomsawin" (Bandcamp), and it sees the two of them turning the amps to 11 and pairing softly sung vocals with roaring guitars. Deerlady plays their shoegazey headbangers, mostly unplugged, in-studio. 1. Masterpieces 2. Believer 3. There There Greatest Hits by Deerlady, Mali Obomsawin, Magdalena Abrego,
"Thus we must admit that Faith, as we know it, does not flow from philosophical argument alone; nor from experience of the Numinous alone; nor from moral experience alone; nor from history alone; but from historical events which at once fulfil and transcend the moral category, which link themselves with the most numinous elements in Paganism, and which (as it seems to us) demand as their pre- supposition the existence of a Being who is more, but not less, than the God whom many reputable philosophers think they can establish."
Welcome back to the Metal Debate podcast, breaking down the new release from British metallers Ingested titled The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams. The album begins with “Paragon Of Purity.” This song is exceptionally tight and focused, with the band unleashing a healthy helping of slam riffs, but also an outstanding reoccurring melodic guitar lead which, two-thirds of the way through, morphs into an intense solo. The song closes in violent fashion with a rolling breakdown and vocalist Evans exploding in a cascade of demonic spit-growling. Track two, “Endless Machine,” is a mid-tempo number in the classic slam vein, although it wanders toward tech death territory as it progresses. “Where No Light Shines” has an eerie synth overlay that creates a simple but effective basis for the song's melody, with the guitar later replicating the synth. It's a great example of how to seamlessly integrate the death and slam approach. I absolutely love the atmosphere that's created - just smart, considered songwriting. Probably my fav track on the album. Next up we hear the brutal harmonization of “Starve The Fire.” Evans pulls out nearly every vocal tool in his arsenal, with growls, screams, vocal fry, pig squeals, and rock singing. Guitarist Sean Hynes stays in a support role on this one laying a heavy foundation on guitar with mostly slam riffs and eschewing any lead break. Unfortunately, and despite some memorable lyrics and melody, “Starve The Fire” didn't seem to be building to anything as an overall composition, and then it just kind of ended awkwardly. On “Expect To Fail” we have plenty of brutality but also the addition of clean vocals performed by Josh Middleton of Sylosis. It's another mid-paced track, with Jeffs occasionally revving the engine, but mostly the band taking a moderate, meandering approach throughout. Mid-way through this ten-track album comes a twist with an instrumental number called “Numinous.” This one is splendid with gorgeous melodic lead and outstanding backing orchestration. When I first heard this, I thought I had inadvertently started playing some Insomnium, because you get a lot of the same ambience here. In truth, there are hints of that melodic death vibe – albeit with different riffing style – throughout The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams. Track seven is “In Nothingness,” a fairly straight-ahead composition, mid-paced, with another guest vocal appearance, this time from Mark Hunter of northern Ohio groove-core act Chimaira. The pairing is an interesting one – not what I would have anticipated – and while there is some appeal to the versing structure, the differential created between singers didn't quite work for me. The energy gets kicked up a notch on “Pantheon” with more slam riffs and pig squeals if you are in the mood for ‘em, as well as classic breakdowns toward the end. Yet still, if you listen carefully, there's some melodic elements below the surface, and even a bit of catchiness in the versing. Nothing commercial in any sense, but definitely catchy. Equal in brutality to any other track on the album, but also with a quasi-epic metal feel to it - is “Kingdoms Of Sand.” Somewhat tech-deathy in its precision, at this point you'll have to have come to appreciate the sophistication of Hynes as a guitarist and composer. The album's closer “A Path Once Lost” spends its first few stanzas with undistorted guitar and emotive, melancholic singing from Evans. Further in we get some overlapping cleans and growls. The contrast in sound was great, but the lyrical pacing seemed off. A decent track overall, but not among the strongest in my opinion. This album is excellent, although admittedly there were a few tracks that didn't quite resonate for me. I'm giving The Tide Of Death And Fractured Dreams a strong 8 out of ten rating. You can purchase the album digitally and in a variety of physical formats through metalblade.com or wherever you buy music.

John Vervaeke and Jordan Hall dive into the intricate concept of hyperobjects, as conceptualized by philosopher Timothy Morton. The discussion revolves around the defining characteristics of hyperobjects, such as their vast distribution in time and space, their non-local and viscous nature, and their challenging temporal scales. They explore examples like evolution and global warming, emphasizing the need for a transformative approach in our cognitive and perceptual frameworks to understand and engage with these complex entities. The conversation also touches on the implications of hyperobjects on distributed cognition and the necessity of developing new modalities of understanding and interaction in the face of such overwhelmingly large-scale phenomena. Angels have fascinated human consciousness since the beginning of time. The word angel derives from the Greek angelos, which is the default translation of the Biblical Hebrew term mal'ākh (literally “messenger”). The angel is a messenger between God and mankind. Whether we talk about angels, daimons, djinns, fairies, or any other of such beings, they all hold something in common, despite their difference in appearance, namely, they are all archetypal images of the same fundamental pattern, the archetype of the ethereal being. These spirits coexist with us; they just exist at another level of reality. As the archetypal image of the call, the angel initiates individuation, the journey towards wholeness of personality (the Self), as well theosis (union with God). Therefore, angels can help us both psychologically and spiritually. The integration of the angel archetype allows us to examine the nature of our essence or soul, the uniqueness that asks to be lived in each of us, and that unfolds itself during our lifetime. Thus, angels carry our true vocation, which is a calling, towards the meaning of our life. ☕ Donate a coffee ⭐ Support on Patreon ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⌛ Timestamps (0:00) Introduction (2:22) Angels in Zoroastrianism (3:33) Ba-soul, Genius, Daimon (6:25) The Transmigration of Souls and Reincarnation (8:10) Djinns, Fairies, Elementals (9:10) The Archetype of The Ethereal Being (9:50) Subtle bodies (10:18) The Role of Angels in the Creation of Evil (12:42) The Purpose and Motivation of Angels (14:35) The Anthropos (Primeval Man) (15:24) The Celestial Hierarchy: First Choir (17:20) The Celestial Hierarchy: Second Choir (17:53) The Celestial Hierarchy: Third Choir (20:40) Swedenborg and Blake (22:12) The Psychology of Angels (27:23) The Angel of Death (27:55) The Angel's Call (30:16) Angels: Individuation and Theosis (32:58) Angels and The Numinous (34:13) The Invocation of Angels (36:08) Angels and Dreams (37:05) Jacob's Ladder and Soul Geography (38:38) Wrestling with The Angel (40:40) The Integration of The Angel Archetype (42:16) Conclusion

Interview with guitarist Mike Baggetta on his new album with mssv mssv is releasing their second studio album Human Reaction in their typical style: with a 58-show tour in the U.S. and parts of Canada (dates below). The band, composed of guitarist Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, David Lynch) on drums and avant-punk icon mike watton bass, creates music that is a heretofore unimagined hybrid of a punk power-trio and a dreamy experimental rock band, though they prefer the term “post-genre.” Human Reaction is being released by BIG EGO Records as a digital download, 12” LP vinyl, and via streaming platformson September 1. Recorded mostly on May Day immediately following that last tour, Human Reaction traverses a deeply broad sonic landscape, as expected from this nearly unclassifiable group, though with even deeper twists and turns. With inventively churning drum textures from Hodges (an instantly identifiable sound honed in his days with Tom Waits and David Lynch) and the full-steam-ahead all-in attitude from watt, (as he's displayed throughout his storied career with MINUTEMEN, fIREHOSE, and Iggy & The Stooges), there is still the impression of “pressure, combustion, power, and hissing clouds of sonic poetry,” as Premier Guitar said. Also evident is the more fearless exploring that comes from a band that has spent a lot of time together crafting their vision, as well as making room for guests like J Mascis, Petra Haden and Nels Cline on some of their previous releases. Baggetta has had the pleasure of working all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations, including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. Fred Lane, Donny McCaslin, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Joseph C. “Artists and healers have a lot in common, actively venturing into the Numinous (unknown spaces, unknown territory) and listening in order to generate and co-create with that which is beyond the earthly apparent.” So says Clare Hedin, a remarkable musician, educator and artist who integrates the study of consciousness with a passion for healing social systems. Renowned as a sound healer, she employs her ethereal voice and music to create profound and transformative experiences for groups in beautiful spaces like churches and spiritual centers. Clare moved to the United States from her birthplace in England for her undergrad in Fine Art and Humanities until she finally found her fit at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, “a place for people like myself who tend to butterfly around, so I could finally finish.” Early in her career Clare worked in the music business (record labels and publishing) before ultimately performing as a singer/songwriter, and then a sound healer with a profound instinct for connecting with the elemental and natural. A true polymath in every sense of the word, Clare has taught Creativity & Innovation to business students at San Francisco State University, guest lectured and advised at St. Martin's Art College in London, and she is also the visionary behind "Dynamic Emergence," a concept she eloquently describes as "the phenomena of novelty arising when two or more elements meet." “There's not enough in the world validating… us. As human beings we are not invited to be the whole of who we are… to be in our Living-System-ness.” says Clare. Having crossed paths with many emergent thinkers while living in the Oakland/bay area for 30 years, she got to spend time with Fritjof Capra (The Tao of Physics), a source of her inspiration for Dynamic Emergence, Clare was introduced to the work of R. Buckminster Fuller, and became introduced to the Buckminster Fuller Institute through friends like Mark Smith (who worked in the 70s on the earliest version of what would become “email”) and Amanda Joy Ravenhill. Bucky was famous for suggesting that rather than fight existing systems, essentially “Just create a better party.” Fractal alert! This episode weaves together a wide range of topics, from quantum entanglement to healing to what humanity's emerging intelligence is doing, and how when we interface together new dots are connected. “We are an emergent phenomenon” says Clare, “Each of us is a collective.” “I am the inherited knowledge of all my ancestors and what they left behind, as well as the container (or meeting point) of my immediate and extended environment… trajectories of story intersecting… the web of life.” “I come from the earth. I am the earth. I return to the earth.” “I think there's something really beautiful about being able to listen with our senses, to listen with our intuition and to really be open and available.” Clare says. “Reconciliation is not something you make happen, it is something you must allow, and our healing is a part of that journey, it's not instead of, it's a part of.” Please join us on Substack, languageofcreativity.substack.com Guest: Clare Hedin Website: clarehedin.com Dynamic Emergence YouTube, Instagram, Facebook Page Clare's Energy Paintings (on Etsy) Grief and Praise, album (ClareHedin.com Shop) Featured Audio: The Mountains Breathe by Clare Hedin (YouTube) Other music in the podcast: “The Crash” by Josh Dobrowner “Nothing Wrong” by Lobate Scarp Episode References: The Buckminster Fuller Institute The Design Science Studio Vision train Mark Smith California Institute of Integral Studies shruti box (Wikipedia) Fr. Ruby Warrington has staked out ground in a number of areas. She is the founder of the self-publishing platform The Numinous and also a leading figure in the “sober curious” movement; she coined the term and is also the author of the 2018 book of the same name. She visited The Unspeakable to talk about a subject very close to Meghan's heart; the decision not to have kids. In her new book Women Without Kids: The Revolutionary Rise of an Unsung Sisterhood, Ruby examines the rise in women (and men) who are childless--either by choice or circumstance--and reports on the “global reproduction slowdown” of the last several decades. She shares her own story and reflects on how much (or how little) the family dynamics of her own childhood shaped her choice not to become a mother. She and Meghan talk about how childless people are planning for their old age, the degree to which concerns about climate change are affecting people's choices, and whether there really is a global population crisis (and if so, which direction it's going in). For paying subscribers to the Unspeakable Susbtack, Ruby stays overtime for a topic that has never been covered on the podcast; astrology! Meghan is skeptical about the whole thing (in other words, a typical Aquarius) but nonetheless interested in what her birth chart might tell her about her struggles of late. They also talk at length about the sober curious movement, including how and why Ruby began hosting sober curious events and how this approach is different from traditional twelve-step programs. Meghan even shares a bit about her still-in-progress year off from drinking. Guest Bio: Ruby Warrington is the author of Women Without Kids: The Revolutionary Rise of an Unsung Sisterhood and is the creator of the term “sober curious." Author of the 2018 book Sober Curious and million-download podcast of the same title, her work has spearheaded a global movement to reevaluate our relationship to alcohol. Other works include Material Girl, Mystical World (2017), The Numinous Astro Deck (2019), and The Sober Curious Reset (2020). Ruby Warrington, author, book doula founder of The Numinous, and movement maker joins Julia to discuss her newest book, Women Without Kids. Ruby uniquely has her finger on the pulse of social revolutions and her latest book explores the growing phenomenon of women living childfree by choice or circumstance. Together Ruby and Julia discuss some of the many reasons more women are choosing to be childfree including feminist history, financial independence, environmentalism, and social norms. Ruby opens up candidly about her personal decision not to have kids and the many expectations others had for her and we explore conflicting feelings of shame, self questioning, intuition, and certainty. Why do some women feel shame when deciding not to have a child? What is motherhood? Why is not wanting children still so taboo to talk about? What does a “normal” family look like? Ruby and Julia dive into these questions and more. Women Without Kids”will hit the book stands on March 28, 2023. Take advantage of Ruby's free gift when you pre-order the book! Carl Jung is a controversial figure. This pioneer of psychoanalysis, though beloved by the pop psychology world, has a dark side: he experimented with occult spirit guides, his movement was both an esoteric mystery-cult and a personality cult, and his theology was heretical, his conception of God that of an amoral demiurge beyond good and evil. Jung made theological errors worthy of rejection, but also stunning insights worthy of attention, especially because his psychoanalytic work with patients gave him an inside look into the weaknesses of modern-day Protestantism. Although most of Jung's patients had lost their faith, the healthiest were church-goers still immersed in liturgies thick with participatory symbols and rituals: their sacramental experiences nudged them towards wholeness. “Even in this day and age,” Jung wrote, “the believer has the opportunity, in his church, to live the ‘symbolic life.'” Most people “look to therapy rather than to religious tradition for their soul development,” ethicist Timothy Patitsas writes, but “the great hospital for the soul is liturgy because in liturgy we are invited to fall in love with what is most Beautiful.” But when much of the American church has been reduced to “four bare walls and a sermon,” there is plenty for the conscious mind to think about, but little for the body to do, or for the unconscious to experience. Jung thought every religion has two feet — faith and ritual — but Protestantism hops on one foot more often than not. Jung's ability to alleviate psychological suffering should intrigue iconoclasts: he gave people another leg to stand on. Protestants rejected veneration of the holy departed and the hierarchy of angels and saints whose prayerful assistance built up the Body. Jung compensated with darker principalities — spirit guides and inner gurus. Protestants abandoned confession to a priest and penance for the soul's repair. Jung compensated with the confessional therapist's office. Protestants repudiated iconography and pilgrimages. Jung gave them dream symbolism and archetypes, an inward journey replacing the outward. Protestants exchanged God's “real presence” in the Mass for a memorial. Jung showed them “the Numinous” within, mingling the archetypal Christ with the Self. Protestants exchanged synergistic theosis for passively imputed righteousness. Jung gave them an arduous process of “individuation” that resonated like a call to adventure. What the Reformers amputated re-emerged as a phantom limb in the form of depth psychology. Therapeutic “priests” now provide us with the healing and self-transcendence that was once the province of church sacraments, spiritual practices, and the heavenly hierarchy. The body and the unconscious (which are so deeply connected) must play their part in the faith. Exclude them, and who knows what will rush in to meet the ineradicable needs of human nature? Icons, rituals, liturgies, hymns, chanting, sacred spaces, fasts and feasts, pilgrimages, and sacraments — these are symbolic (“joining/uniting”) modes of participation indigenous to Christianity that psychology can only imitate, and they function fractally, healing not only the individual (psychotherapy's aim), but also facilitating a broader communion of persons. Because Christ joins together all the opposites (Col. 1:17, 21), Eucharistic communion creates communion. In Him, all things hold together; without Him, things fall apart. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with JOURNAL author Alisa Ruddell about her online-exclusive article, “Carl Jung and the Modern World's Wound”. https://www.equip.org/articles/carl-jung-and-the-modern-worlds-wound/Locked articles are online exclusive content that are only available to subscribers. Laura Valentine is the Artistic Director and Choreographer for Numinous Flux Dance Company in Nashville, TN. The work she curates is sensory and riddled with humanity, telling stories thru the human form and searching for a shared inner movement between herself, those embodying the work, and those making sense of it. She has crafted and produced multiple full length productions over the past decade, exploring birth, loss and everything plot-worthy in between. A Numinous piece can take years to unveil and unravel, and the time invested with the human's involved is a big part of the Numinous process. The relationships move the work where they will.In this episode, Stephen talks with Laura about what it means to be a contemplative dance company, the deeper motivations behind her creative work and what it means for a dancer to have conversations with space. On The Literary Life podcast this week, our hosts are joined in their discussion of The Wind in the Willows by Kelly Cumbee. Angelina, Cindy, Thomas and Kelly talk about chapters 7-8, focusing special attention on a section of this book that presents a potential problem for some readers. Angelina opens with background on the Enlightenment and Romanticism, the concept of “the Numinous,” and the popularity of the Pan character in Edwardian times. Thomas gives us a classical picture of who Pan was in mythology. Kelly then speaks to the Medieval understanding of the figure of Pan and the pastoral tradition along with their connections with Christ. They also address concerns over neo-paganism in relation to this book. If you want more discussion on mythology in literature, tune in to Episode 60: Why Read Pagan Myths. Cindy's 2022 Morning Time for Moms Summer Discipleship group is now open for registration. The theme this year is “Laughter and Lament.” Head over to morningtimeformoms.com to find out more and sign up! Thomas will be teaching an introductory course on Russian Literature in July 2022. The worst is better than none, and the best cannot be expected to go quite true. Samuel Johnson “Here I am, sitting at a little oak table where in old times possibly some fair lady sat to pen, with much thought and many blushes, her ill-spelt love letter, and writing in my diary in shorthand all that has happened since I closed it last. It is the nineteenth century up-to-date with a vengeance. And yet, unless my senses deceive me, the old centuries had, and have, powers of their own which mere ‘modernity' cannot kill.” Bram Stoker This malady of unbelief, again, is common to serious minds, educated to examine all things before they know the things they criticise by the slow, sure process of assimilating ideas. If we would but receive it, we are not capable of examining that which we do not know; and knowledge is the result of a slow, involuntary process, impossible to a mind in the critical attitude. Let us who teach spend time in the endeavour to lay proper and abundant nutriment before the young, rather than in leading them to criticise and examine every morsel of knowledge that comes their way. Who could live if every mouthful of bodily food were held up on a fork for critical examination before it be eaten? Charlotte Mason Suppose you were told that there was a tiger in the next room: you would know that you were in danger and would probably feel fear. But if you were told “There is a ghost in the next room,” and believed it, you would feel, indeed, what is often called fear, but of a different kind. It would not be based on the knowledge of danger, for no one is primarily afraid of what a ghost may do to him, but of the mere fact that it is a ghost. It is “uncanny” rather than dangerous, and the special kind of fear it excites may be called Dread. With the Uncanny one has reached the fringes of the Numinous. Now suppose that you were told simply “There is a might spirit in the room” and believed it. Your feelings would then be even less like the mere fear of danger: but the disturbance would be profound. You would feel wonder and a certain shrinking–described as awe, and the object which excites it is the Numinous. C. S. Lewis To Find God by Robert Herrick Weigh me the fire; or canst thou find A way to measure out the wind? Distinguish all those floods that are Mixed in that wat'ry theater, And taste thou them as saltless there, As in their channel first they were. Tell me the people that do keep Within the kingdoms of the deep; Or fetch me back that cloud again, Beshivered into seeds of rain. Tell me the motes, dust, sands, and spears Of corn, when summer shakes his ears; Show me that world of stars, and whence They noiseless spill their influence. This if thou canst; then show me Him That rides the glorious cherubim. Book List: Dracula by Bram Stoker Formation of Character by Charlotte Mason The Problem of Pain by C. S.
