In this episode, we’ll speak with Jeff about this latest Auditory Adventure into the Fantasy Worlds of Irwin Allen & take a ‘crash dive course’ into the composers & some of the notable original music cues & themes they scored throughout the four season run of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. as well as some of his fascinating upcoming projects. So, before I knew it, we’d done an entire show without talking about the Voyage soundtrack. As a result, I’ve decided to split our conversation into TWO Special Calling Alpha Control interviews. Welcome to the premiere episode of COMPOSER CONVERSATIONS WITH DAVID COSCINA on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO. —- Note from David Coscina: The idea of this show was born out of discussions with Erik Woods and some film composer friends of mine revolving around the concept of shop talk between musicians. I’ve re-visited Facebook messages and emails I’ve traded with these amazingly talented folks and enjoyed the level of candidness that sometimes eludes them in formal press interviews. There is often a lot more that goes into the craft of writing and producing music for media than many are aware of. I’ve always wanted to hear more about the process these successful composers apply on a daily basis to provide the exhilarating, dynamic, moving music they come up with. Hopefully, this show will explore these kinds of avenues and more. Thanks for tuning in and enjoy! —— On the premiere episode of COMPOSER CONVERSATIONS, David chatted with IFMCA Award-winning composer, Christopher Willis (Veep, Mickey Mouse, The Death of Stalin) whose critically acclaimed score to THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD was released back in January of 2020.  The film made its rounds at film festivals in 2019, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of 2019. The film received its theatrical release in the UK in January and will be making its way to North America in May. Enjoy the show! And when you are done leave David comment below to let his know how much you enjoyed the show. —— ABOUT DAVID COSCINA: David grew up with music in his home and was exposed at an early age to a broad spectrum of music genres but it was orchestral music, specifically soundtracks, that resonated most with him. At 10 years of age, David began playing the piano and composing. In high school, he played in several concert bands and jazz orchestras that led him to pursue music at York University in the late ‘80s where he studied under David Mott for jazz theory and James Tenney for composition. While at York. David scored several student films and became more focussed on music for film. Upon graduating, David provided more music for friends’ films and was one of two composers considered for scoring Paris, France (1992). The decade also saw the composer provide orchestral arrangements for rock/pop songs. In 1998, David scored 3 short films for Toronto independent filmmaker David Sutherland including “My Father’s Hands” which met with great critical reception. The composer’s score was also nominated for a Golden Sheaf Award later that year. David also scored Marilyn Grey’s “Vicious Cycles” later that year. In 2004 David was a finalist in the Yamaha Music Production Contest in the Film Scoring category judged by Matrix composer Don Davis. In 2008 David was awarded Finalist in the Notion Realize Music challenge in the Professional Composer category with his “Musashi Suite for Orchestra”. The panel of judges included the renowned concert composer John Corigliano and film composer Carter Burwell. Of late, the composer has been concentrating on concert pieces and providing music for Cinematic Sound Radio and has enjoyed the diversity it has afforded him stylistically. David’s style, while admittedly eclectic, leans towards early to mid-20th-century orchestral music with a touch of jazz harmonies. The composer has been actively involved in electronic music since 1985 when he purchased his first synthesizer. David’s film music influences are John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Lalo Schifrin, John Barry and Elliot Goldenthal. His orchestral influences are Mahler, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Debussy, Ravel and minimalist composer John Adams. [Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] Have you ever wanted to sit down for an hour and half with John Powell and really get to know him and his process fully? Well now you can with our latest installment in the All Access series. We cover everything from John's path into music and what really made him settle down to become a film composer. He takes us through his journey starting out working under Hans Zimmer in the 90's, including teaming up with Harry Gregson-Williams. John talks extensively about his methods and processes, and you'll really get to understand how he analyzes a scene or project. We talk about the state of the industry and why Hollywood's obsession with violence caused him to quit action movies and focus solely on animation. Hear fun little details from his scores across his career, such as when The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman lost a bet that ended up causing him some discomfort to his testicles (yep, it's a John Powell interview after all!). In deep sincerity John describes in immense detail about the historical events of World War 1 that inspired him to take 2 years off of writing scores to focus on his concert piece, A Prussian Requiem which premieres March 2016 and will see an album release later that year. After hearing John speak about it, you will have a full understanding of what drove him to write it. John also shares why he continually tells himself that his music is not good enough and we explore where in terms of quality he is trying to reach. From his favorite drink to what he does outside of music, you'll experience John Powell like you never have before. It was a supreme honor to speak casually, intimately and in-depth about his life and career. Sit back and relax and enjoy the wonderful brilliant mix of genuine sincerity and sarcastic hilarity that is John Powell. Only on Film.Music.Media: All Access. *John's latest score sees him returning to live-action with Pan. We don't discuss it in this interview, but if you'd like to hear John speak on his work on Pan please check out this other interview that FMM's Kaya Savas shot for the IFMCA where John speaks about Pan after accepting his IFMCA Award for How To Train Your Dragon 2. Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music

On June 22, 2015, the world lost one of its greatest film music heroes. James Horner was only 61 one when he lost control of his S-312 Tucano MK1 turboprop and crashed 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles. James Horner’s loss was devastating. He was part of a holy trinity of film composers I grew up admiring. The others were John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. I never thought that the day would came where only one of them would still be standing. Horner, a two time Academy Award winner, six time Grammy winner and IFMCA Award winner, had an uncanny knack for perfectly capturing the emotional core of a film with his patented musical textures and harmonies, which is still unmatched in film today. His list of legendary scores seems almost endless, however, on today’s program, and on the one year anniversary of his passing, we here at Cinematic Sound Radio will be presenting a special two part, four hour tribute to James Horner and his lesser known scores. On this first program you’ll hear music from such films as THE JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN, DAD, DEEP IMPACT, BEYOND BORDERS and more.
