Welcome back to Born to Watch, where this week the team tackles the endlessly rewatchable, criminally underappreciated Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Strap in as Whitey, Damo, and Dan on the Land gear up for a sci-fi action loop fest featuring Tom Cruise in one of his most against-type roles, Emily Blunt as a full-metal badass, and a time-travel plot that actually sticks the landing. Enjoy our Edge of Tomorrow (2014) Review! The boys jump right into the paradox-riddled battlefield, first marveling at how this epic blockbuster somehow bombed in the US, despite being everything a great action movie should be. They blame lousy marketing, title confusion (was it Live Die Repeat?), and the fact that in 2014, Cruise was still on Hollywood's naughty step thanks to Oprah's couch. But now? It's cult-classic gold.Whitey kicks off by calling out just how rare it is to see Cruise playing the weasel, Major Cage is an ad man thrown into combat, clueless and terrified. For Dan, this fish-out-of-water arc makes the movie shine, watching Cruise go from smug coward to unstoppable warrior. Damo agrees, even calling Edge of Tomorrow his number one Cruise performance, yep, he goes there.Emily Blunt earns unanimous praise as Rita Vrataski, the “Angel of Verdun” and all-around exosuit-slaying legend. She's fierce, stoic, and fit as hell, basically the action heroine we didn't know we needed in 2014. Her iconic push-up entrance gets a lot of airtime (and a few longing sighs), and the team agrees she holds her own, and then some, against Cruise. And what would a Born to Watch ep be without the usual blend of insight and irreverence? We get tangents on everything from duck anatomy (cloacas, anyone?) to Bill Paxton's legendary status as the only man killed by a Terminator, a Predator, and an Alien. The Paxton love is real. The pod dives into director Doug Liman's sharp visuals and crisp pacing, and shout out screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, who somehow turns a convoluted time loop premise into a tight, clever, and emotional thrill ride. Liman's resume (Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) gets the props it deserves, and there's a great sidebar on the upcoming Road House remake, complete with hot takes on Jake Gyllenhaal. As always, the “Hit, Sleeper, Dud” segment delivers, with Gone Girl getting the nod as a masterful hit, Kevin Costner's 3 Days to Kill as a solid sleeper, and Lucy (sorry, ScarJo) landing squarely in dud territory. Bonus points for Damo's vivid breakdown of Ben Affleck's infamous side-dick scene. The episode also features a glorious Cruise countdown. Each host reveals their top five Tom Cruise films, expect Jerry Maguire, Collateral, Top Gun: Maverick, and of course, Edge of Tomorrow, to make appearances. Damo even throws in Tropic Thunder, because who can forget Les Grossman? Then there's the philosophical stuff: How long was Cage actually in the time loop? (Answer: a hell of a long time). Was blackmailing the general really the best plan? (Debatable). And what's the real ending? (Whitey thinks it's Cruise's “now you're gonna bone me” smile).Oh, and voicemails are back! Listeners call in to rant about The Bodyguard, praise the pod's Whitney Houston renditions, and drop the occasional F-bomb. Classic Born to Watch fan energy.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Edge of Tomorrow Cruise's most underrated film? Would you waste 300 time loops trying to get with Emily Blunt? Modern Spies month continues as we go from Ethan Hunt to Jason Bourne. The Bourne Identity was credited with shifting the aesthetics of spy films for the 21st century, not only moving away from gadgets and one-liners but utilizing handheld cinematography and fast editing in its hand-to-hand fight sequences. Christian and Scott will consider whether these innovations still play well over 20 years later. Plus, some thoughts on the box office success of A Minecraft Movie & the state of movies in 2025 so far. How do you feel about the Bourne franchise? Let us know at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com
This week on Dish, Nick and Angela are joined by a powerhouse couple. Brian Cox is a renowned Scottish actor whose career spans more than six decades. Born in Dundee, he was classically trained before becoming a key figure in British theatre. Brian Cox made history as the first actor to portray Dr Hannibal Lecter on screen in Michael Mann's Manhunter in 1986. He went on to star in highly acclaimed films including Braveheart and The Bourne Identity. On television, Brian Cox is now a cultural icon, thanks to his award-winning portrayal of media titan Logan Roy in Succession. Brian married his wife Nicole in 2002, and they have two sons. Nicole Ansari-Cox is an actor, director and producer. Born in Cologne, she began acting at the age of nine with a breakthrough role in the German crime series Tatort. Her career includes roles in TV shows such as Deadwood and Succession. Nicole frequently shares the stage with her husband, including their current performance in The Score at Theatre Royal Haymarket. Nick prepares the couple's favourite cocktail, a frozen margarita, to start while Angela prepares roast trout with soy, orange and chilli, based on a sweet and spicy salmon recipe from Waitrose. The experts at Waitrose pair this with an English white wine, Chapel Down Bacchus. This episode is one of those great Dish double dates. Brian and Nicole talk about their new play and its parallels with modern life. They share some hilarious insights into their marriage and Brian's eating habits, and treat us to some amazing anecdotes from the set of Succession. You can now watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help. Send your dilemmas to dish@waitrose.co.uk and she'll try to answer them in a future episode. Dish from Waitrose is made by Cold Glass Productions
Episode 47 - Classic Recommendation: Swingers (1996)Can we tell you something? “You are so money and you don't even know it!”Let us take you back to 1996, when Jon Favreau (Chef, The Mandalorian, Iron Man), Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers, The Lost World), and Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity) arrived on the film scene with this gem of a movie. This one has something for everyone to love — from Vince Vaughn's magnetic energy to Jon Favreau's pitch-perfect comedy as he navigates the real sadness of getting over a breakup. We meet a group of friends (who could easily be you and your own buddies) just trying to make it in Los Angeles. This classic flick delivers the perfect mix of laughs and sincerity — and it's way ahead of its time in how self-aware it is.Swingers helped catapult its creators into the spotlight and brought new attention to indie filmmaking. Favreau wrote the sharp and heartfelt script (his screenwriting debut!). There's even a moment when the filmmakers ask Steven Spielberg for permission to use the Jaws theme — not only did he say yes, he loved the movie so much he cast Vaughn in The Lost World. With a runtime of just over 90 minutes, this movie keeps a smile on your face the whole way through. It's also technically impressive — shot in just 18 days! Look out for excellent supporting turns from rising stars Heather Graham and Ron Livingston (who delivers several truly memorable and relatable scenes). Swingers was both a critical and commercial success, pulling in $4.6 million at the global box office on a $250,000 budget. It's a reminder of a time when indie films had a strong allure. We debate whether that time has passed for good, or if word-of-mouth can still help indie films and fresh talent break through. There's no doubt you'll be laughing, reminiscing about time with your own friends, and just enjoying the ride of this goofy, heartfelt indie. Swingers is currently streaming on Paramount+ and Hoopla, and is also available to rent or buy on all major platforms.Enjoy the movie, hit up the comments with your thoughts, and as always, thanks for listening! John welcomes back Christina Hodson (The Flash, Bumblebee) to ask, how do you to construct a great action sequence? Using examples from three different movies, they discuss what good action looks like on the page, how to keep your reader from getting bored or confused, and why production can sometimes blow your plans to smithereens. Then it's a round of How Would This be a Movie?, where we take four stories from the news and pitch how we might adapt them for the screen. Stories include a mysterious painting, a train trapped in a blizzard, a teen who sued his parents, and zombie colleges. We also follow up on director's chairs and mammograms, and answer listener questions on side characters and creating a healthy work/life balance. We are back with a brand new series which is all about celebrating LOVE in all forms so consider this episode a gift from me to you as we are joined by everyone's favourite, Leo Woodall. You will have seen Leo as the Essex bad boy who was caught by Jennifer Coolidge in a very compromising position with his ‘Uncle' in ‘The White Lotus' and breaking our hearts in ‘One Day' along with one our favourite ever Reign guests, Ambika Mod. Now he's playing the world's greatest genius, Ed in Apple TV's show ‘Prime Target' - it's very ‘Good Will Hunting' meets ‘Bourne Identity' - and even ‘Bridget Jones' is now mad about the boy as Leo plays Bridget's new love interest. If you haven't seen the new Bridget movie yet make sure you take an entire pack of tissues, I cried the entire way through it. If you loved Leo already, prepare to love him even more after this episode as we get deep! Good Trump Bad Trump lives again! Segment 1: Gene Hackman Tribute* Context: Discussion sparked by the suspicious death of a 95-year-old man in Arizona (initially unclear if it's Hackman, later clarified as a tribute to his legacy).* Key Points:* Hackman's death at 95 is seen as a full life; hosts reflect on his cinematic impact.* Favorites: Hoosiers (Strong One's top pick for its underdog story), The Quick and the Dead (best villain role), Superman (best Lex Luthor), The Replacements, Young Frankenstein, The Firm, Royal Tenenbaums, Crimson Tide, Get Shorty.* Praise for Hackman as "the last true American tough guy" pre-"woke bull crap" (last credit 2004).* Memorable Quote: "Death, taxes, and whatever Gene Hackman's in is a good movie."Segment 2: Government Critique and DOGE* DOGE Revelations:* Hosts laud DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) for exposing wasteful spending (e.g., $300 screws, $25K toilet seats).* Obama allegedly receives $2.6M annually from "Obamacare" royalties—hosts question its legitimacy.* Conspiracy Nod: References to Independence Day and Bourne Identity as examples of government corruption hiding in plain sight.* Critique: DOGE exposes financial waste but lacks power to stop it; hosts demand action over mere exposure.Segment 3: Epstein Files Disappointment* Update: "Part 1" of Epstein files released, but it's a "nothing burger"—same old phone records and flight logs, no new names.* Frustration: Hosts criticize Attorney General Pam Bondi for not acting despite having the files, suspect a cover-up by intelligence agencies (CIA, FBI, Mossad).* Hope: Speculation that "Part 2" might reveal more, but skepticism prevails based on historical inaction.* Bad Trump Moment: Trump's failure to push harder on this issue disappoints the hosts.Segment 4: Ukraine and American Empire* News: Trump negotiates $500B in Ukrainian mineral rights (uranium, titanium, coal, oil) in exchange for U.S. bases to secure the border against Russia.* Critique: Hosts decry it as empire-building, no different from Biden/Obama policies—contradicts "no boots on the ground" promises.* Irony: Both liberals (pro-war) and Republicans (pro-minerals) get what they want, exposing a unified agenda.Segment 5: Policy Updates* Tax Cuts: House passes $2T tax cut, $4.5T in breaks—no taxes on tips, overtime, or Social Security payments.* Immigration: Trump's "Golden Ticket"—$5M buys citizenship, bypassing legal struggles (hosts wary of corruption risks).* Maine Governor: Janet Mills defies Trump's ban on men in women's sports; Trump threatens to pull federal funding and college accreditation.* Ohio Governor Race: Vivek Ramaswamy emerges as a candidate, endorsed by J.D. Vance.* Florida Governor Race: Casey DeSantis runs, sparking dynasty talk with Ron DeSantis.Segment 6: Cultural Reflections* Kathleen Kennedy Retirement: Set for end of 2025—hosts cheer but lament she's not fired in disgrace for ruining Star Wars, Willow, and Indiana Jones.* Comedy as Reality: Past satire (Life of Brian, SNL's Pat) mirrors today's gender debates—hosts call it a mental illness, not reality.* Language Debate: Hosts discuss curse words' cultural weight vs. biblical purity, landing on personal conviction over strict rules.Final Thoughts* Strong One: Honor parents by avoiding their mistakes; only Jesus breaks generational curses.* Philosopher King: Navigating cultural lines (e.g., language) is complex—trust the Holy Spirit's conviction.* Dusty: Comedy of the past (e.g., Life of Brian, Pat) is today's absurd reality—trans issues are a mental health crisis, not a civil right.Closing* Verse: Zechariah 8:16—"Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbor; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates."* Prayer: Call for truth, vigilance, and drawing closer to Jesus.* Sign-Off: "You've been listening to the Kingsplaining Podcast… where the people are free, the taxes are voluntary, and your two kings serve the King of Kings, Christ Jesus."Where to Find Us* Website: Kingsplaining.com* Platforms: Anywhere you get podcasts* Call to Action: Like, share, subscribe, review on Apple Podcasts. This week, fresh off of hanging out in person in Vancouver over the weekend, your intrepid hosts are taming the shrew in a modern high school setting to undeniably classic results as we close out Feb2ary Is For Lovers with the movie that launched Heath Ledger to stardom. It's 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger and starring Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, Susan May Pratt, Gabrielle Union, Larry Miller and Allison Janney. The first of a couple Shakespeare adaptations transposed into modern high school for Stiles, the movie makes good use of her charms as well, but this is undeniably Ledger's movie and he crushes as the heart-throb lead. Plus: We've got another Movie Theatre Field Report as J Mo makes the case for a Red Hulk as Joe Biden reading of Captain America: Brave New World because I mean, sure, why the hell not. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 10 Things I Hate About You is currently streaming in Canada on Disney+, Crave, Starz, and Hollywood Suite at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Top Gun: Maverick, The Social Network, Harriet The Spy, The Rugrats Movie, The Incredible Hulk, We Live In Time, The Wild Robot, The Order, Ripley, Severance, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Anyone But You, The Bourne Identity, Orphan: First Kill, Third Rock From The Sun, Clueless, Get Smart's Bruce & Lloyd: Out of Control, and Grease among many more. We'll be back next week to kick off Hackmonth (Gene Hackmarch?), as we salute the late great Gene Hackman with a month-long tribute to one of the best to ever do it, beginning with Hoosiers next week, finishing out with The Royal Tenenbaums as our March canon entry, and making stops along the way including Crimson Tide and The Conversation. Sad to see the old man go, but my god what a career and we can't wait to spend the next month discussing it in depth. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Hollywood focus on the CIA Is It Correct? Her Experience. Hollywood has long been fascinated with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Blockbuster franchises such as Mission Impossible, The Bourne Identity, and TV series like Homeland have shaped the public perception of the CIA as a high-stakes world filled with thrilling missions, cutting-edge gadgets, and international espionage. But how much of this portrayal aligns with reality? Her powerful story is in a recent podcast interview on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, available on their website and platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Michele Rigby Assad, a former CIA officer, is a guest on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast and gives her firsthand experience that challenges the Hollywood narrative. Michele Rigby Assad defies the Hollywood stereotype of a CIA agent. Her journey from a small-town upbringing in Florida to working in counterterrorism operations worldwide presents a different, truthful story about life inside the CIA. Unlike the stereotypical male-dominated, action-packed spy films, Michele’s experience as a covert officer reveals the agency’s rigorous training, intense challenges, and the real-world implications of intelligence work. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. The CIA vs. Hollywood’s Portrayal Hollywood often glamorizes intelligence work, focusing on thrilling chases, daring rescues, and sophisticated gadgets. While some elements are inspired by real operations, many aspects are greatly exaggerated. Michele Rigby Assad sheds light on the truth behind the agency’s operations. Hollywood focus on the CIA Is It Correct? Her Experience. Read the supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium, Newsbreak and Blogspot. According to the CIA’s official website, the agency is described as "the Nation’s first line of defense," operating where others cannot to ensure national security. Formed from the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II, the CIA’s purpose has always been intelligence gathering, covert operations, and counterintelligence efforts. Unlike the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which primarily focuses on domestic law enforcement, the CIA is dedicated to overseas intelligence operations, often working behind the scenes to influence global events. Wikipedia provides a more detailed historical perspective, describing the CIA as a civilian foreign intelligence service responsible for collecting and analyzing security information, mainly through human intelligence (HUMINT). The agency is headquartered at the George Bush Center for Intelligence in Langley, Virginia. While its primary function is intelligence gathering, the CIA has historically been involved in various covert actions, including political influence, supporting foreign groups, and, in some cases, planning assassinations and regime changes. Listen to the interview as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. Michele Rigby Assad’s Experience She entered the agency with no prior military or law enforcement background. Yet, she excelled in the high-stakes world of intelligence, working alongside her husband on counterterrorism missions in war-torn regions. Hollywood focus on the CIA Is It Correct? Her Experience. Her experiences are documented in her book Breaking Cover, where she introduces the concept of "Get Off the X." This CIA survival technique teaches officers to escape deadly ambushes as quickly as possible. She applies this philosophy to life outside intelligence, urging individuals to overcome fear and obstacles to achieve success. Her book highlights not only the physical dangers of her career but also the psychological challenges of living undercover, making split-second decisions, and adapting to constantly shifting threats. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. Beyond her work in intelligence, Michele has transitioned into corporate risk assessment, business mediation, and government diplomacy. She offers training for organizations seeking expertise in Arab World politics and culture, helping companies navigate geopolitical complexities and security risks. The Role of Media in Shaping Perceptions The influence of Hollywood in shaping public opinion about the CIA cannot be understated. Through our platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and the interview which is free is on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show website Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast platforms. You'll find that the narratives presented in films and television often become the de facto understanding of intelligence work. But is Hollywood’s focus on the CIA correct? While it offers an entertaining and dramatized version, the real stories, like Michele Rigby Assad’s, reveal a far more complex and demanding profession. Intelligence officers must be adaptable, resilient, and capable of handling high-pressure situations. Unlike their fictional counterparts, their work is often slow, methodical, and requires years of dedication without the promise of recognition. Hollywood focus on the CIA Is It Correct? Her Experience. Check out the show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms Hollywood’s portrayal of the CIA is designed for entertainment, not accuracy. While elements of truth exist, much of what we see on screen is exaggerated for dramatic effect. Michele Rigby Assad’s real-life experience provides a more authentic look into the agency, showcasing the challenges and sacrifices intelligence officers make. Her story is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and courage in one of the world’s most secretive professions. When social media and news platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Apple News, Spotify, Podcast, Newsbreak, Medium, and Truth shape public discourse, it’s crucial to differentiate between cinematic fiction and reality. Understanding the true nature of intelligence work helps us appreciate the dedication of those who serve in silence, often far from the limelight of Hollywood’s glamorous portrayal. This week, we continue to collect members of the Ocean's gang like Infinity Stones, as we find Danny playing a convincing soldier and compelling leading man in a 90s geo-political thriller that feels like a total forgotbuster, despite starring two massive movie stars and launching DreamWorks as a studio. It's 1997's The Peacemaker, directed by Mimi Leder, and starring George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Marcel Iureș, Aleksandr Baluev, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Holt McCallany, Goran Višnjić, and Michael Boatman. One of the Cloondog's early jumps from ER star to silverscreen leading man, this movie is also deeply tied to ER as a production. Clooney unquestionably has the juice however, and the movie's 90s thriller sensibilities -- while not as refined as some of its contemporaries -- still feels like something of a lost art, a type of movie we just don't get enough of these days. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, it is not available to stream in Canada but can be rented on YouTube and Cineplex. Other works discussed on this episode include The X-Files, Groundhog Day, Source Code, The X-Files: Fight The Future, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places, You've Got Mail, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thelma, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, The Beekeeper, The Art of War, The Foreigner, Superman Returns, Strangers on a Train, Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action, The House, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, The Bourne Identity, Clear and Present Danger, Mission: Impossible, Batman & Robin, The Green Hornet, Deep Impact, Armageddon, Pay It Forward, On The Basis Of Sex, The Leftovers, The Morning Show, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Three Kings, The Men Who Stare At Goats, 24, Burn After Reading, Michael Clayton, Out of Sight, Twisters and Legally Blonde. Next week, we're switching things up and going back to Hayley's new VHS stack to talk one of the all-time great westerns: 1992's Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood's deconstruction of the genre that made him famous and a worthy winner of Best Picture Oscar gold. Unforgiven is streaming on Crave in Canada and Max in the US. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Episode 308. It's an explosive start to 2025 as we watch all of the Bourne franchise: the trilogy of The Bourne Identity, Supremacy, and Ultimatum, the not-really-a-reboot The Bourne Legacy, and the attempted return to form with Jason Bourne. These movies follow an amnesiac secret agent as he attempts to uncover the corrupt government program that took his memories in exchange for deadly skills. We discuss the context of action cinema in 2002 and how the series adapted to industry changes like cinematic universes, the Matt Damon screen persona, the unique values of the oft-maligned Bourne Legacy, DVD bonus features, the Bourne Stuntacular at Universal Studios Orlando, and how these movies all have the same end credits sequence.Click here to watch a video of this episode. This week we're auditioning for the role of a lifetime as DePALMBER: PART DE continues with another example of what feels like well-worn territory for our man of the month: an erotic thriller in which a working class man in show business is forced to be an unlikely hero as he becomes entangled in a murder. It's 1984's Body Double, directed, produced, and co-written from a story by Brian De Palma, and starring Craig Wasson, Melanie Griffith, Gregg Henry, Deborah Shelton, Guy Boyd and Dennis Franz. As De Palma's immediate follow-up to Scarface, it's a brazenly bizarre swing on what was surely a blank check opportunity, and we have to admire the effort. Dripping in Hitchcockian influence with a plot that plays like Rear Window and Vertigo at the same time, it's another terrific showcase of that 80s cool De Palma style that would be pillaged decades later in the Grand Theft Auto video games. Plus: J Mo goes knives out on Wicked, having been held hostage by it for nearly three hours. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Body Double is not currently streaming in Canada but can be rented on YouTube for $5. Other works referenced in this episode include The Producers (2005), Avengers Endgame, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremact, Doubt, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), The Manchurian Candidate (1962), The Fog (2005), Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Super 8, The Fablemans, West Side Story (2021), Rory Scovel: Religion, Sex & A Few Things In Between, Batman Returns, Batman & Robin, The Game, North by Northwest and Deep Water, among others. We take a quick break from De Palma next week, as our final release before Christmas Day means it's time to celebrate Shaqmas once again! Our annual holiday tradition of covering a selection from the filmography of Shaquille O'Neal continues this year with what is surely the best movie he ever made: 1994's Blue Chips, directed by William Friedkin and co-starring Nick Nolte. And our DePalmber Canon Entry at the end of the month is 1981's Blow Out! Until next week, we'll see you at the movies!!

When we look back at late-90s cinema, few films hit the nerve of an era quite like Enemy of the State (1998). Directed by Tony Scott and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the film was released when the internet was still in its infancy, and the public's understanding of digital surveillance was minimal at best. Fast-forward to today and Enemy of the State feels less like a cautionary tale and more like a prediction of the modern world.Starring Will Smith in one of his first dramatic leading roles and featuring a powerhouse cast that includes Gene Hackman, Jon Voight, and Lisa Bonet, Enemy of the State blends action, espionage, and paranoia in a way that makes it both thrilling and eerily relevant. The movie's central theme—how the government can use technology to monitor citizens—is more pertinent now than in 1998. But beyond the social commentary, Enemy of the State is a tightly wound conspiracy thriller that still manages to entertain on its most basic level: sheer adrenaline.A Case of Wrong Place, Wrong TimeThe film kicks off with the murder of a U.S. Congressman by a high-ranking NSA official, played with chilling authority by Jon Voight. This event sets the stage for the film's exploration of the dark side of government surveillance. The plot follows Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith), a successful labour lawyer, who unwittingly becomes entangled in this conspiracy when an old acquaintance slips him a videotape containing evidence of the congressman's murder.Dean, who has no idea that he has this tape, quickly finds himself the target of the NSA's surveillance and an orchestrated takedown. His life is turned upside down as his bank accounts are frozen, his credit cards are cancelled, and an omniscient digital eye monitors his every move. The tension only builds as Dean is forced to team up with a former NSA operative, Brill (Gene Hackman), who helps him understand the depth of the conspiracy he's caught up in.Surveillance and Paranoia in the Digital AgeEnemy of the State stands out because it effectively tackles the theme of surveillance in the digital age. Released during a time when most of us still viewed the internet as little more than a novelty, the film was ahead of its time in predicting just how pervasive technology would become in our everyday lives. From satellite tracking to phone tapping, Scott's direction makes it clear that there's nowhere to hide in this tech-driven world. At the heart of the film is a fear that resonates with many today: the loss of privacy. The movie asks a question that feels more urgent in the 2020s than in the 1990s—how much power should governments have to monitor their citizens in the name of security? While Enemy of the State doesn't provide any clear answers, it succeeds in making us feel uneasy, particularly as the line between safety and invasion of privacy blurs. In hindsight, the film's plot is almost prophetic. In an era post-Snowden, with revelations of mass government surveillance by agencies like the NSA, Enemy of the State seems less far-fetched and more like a stark reality. This prescience is one of the reasons the film holds up so well over two decades later. Will Smith: A Star in the MakingAt the time of its release, Enemy of the State was a significant departure for Will Smith, who was best known for his comedic roles in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and blockbuster action flicks like Independence Day. As Robert Clayton Dean, Smith delivers a more nuanced and serious performance, proving that he can handle roles that require more than just one-liners and charm. His portrayal of an everyman caught in a nightmare scenario is both believable and sympathetic, grounding the film's high-concept premise in a relatable human experience.Smith's chemistry with Gene Hackman is another highlight. Hackman, who plays the paranoid, world-weary former NSA agent, brings gravitas to every scene he's in, making Brill a character that feels like he could have walked right out of another conspiracy thriller—The Conversation (1974), for instance, which Hackman also starred in. Their dynamic, a blend of mentor and reluctant ally, adds a layer of emotional depth to the film, giving it more weight than your average action thriller.Tony Scott's Signature Style: Tension on OverdriveTony Scott, known for his kinetic and visually dynamic style, brings his A-game to Enemy of the State. The film is packed with fast-paced action sequences and explosive set pieces that we've come to expect from Scott, but what sets it apart from other late-90s thrillers is how well it builds and sustains tension. The chase sequences, for example, are relentless, and Scott uses surveillance tools—cameras, monitors, satellites—to create a sense of claustrophobia. The viewer is constantly reminded that Dean is being watched, tracked, and hunted. Even in scenes where nothing overtly dangerous is happening, the ever-present hum of technology keeps the tension alive. It's a film that rarely lets the audience catch its breath, and that's exactly what makes it so engaging.A Time Capsule That Still MattersAlthough Enemy of the State is a product of the late 90s, its themes and messages have become more relevant with time. The film tapped into a growing anxiety about the role of technology in our lives, and in the years since its release, that anxiety has only intensified. The explosion of the internet, the rise of social media, and the ongoing debate about privacy vs. security make Enemy of the State feel more like a cultural artifact that predicted our current reality. The film also helped shape how Hollywood would approach tech-based thrillers in the future. Movies like The Bourne Identity, Eagle Eye, and even The Dark Knight owe a debt to the groundwork laid by Enemy of the State, particularly in how they depict technology as both a tool and a weapon. Why It Still MattersAt its core, Enemy of the State (1998) is a pulse-pounding thriller that expertly combines action with a timely and prescient commentary on technology and government power. It's a movie that's fun to watch and forces you to think about the world we live in today. With strong performances from Will Smith and Gene Hackman, and Tony Scott's tense, no-holds-barred direction, Enemy of the State remains a must-watch for anyone who enjoys a good thriller with something important to say.For fans of the Born to Watch podcast, revisiting this film will be both a nostalgic trip back to the late 90s and a stark reminder of how far and little things have changed since then. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/
Show Notes Free Palestine Sometimes you wake up on a fishing boat and you don't know who you are. If this has happened to you, consider yourself in good company, alongside Matt Damon in this week's movie, the Bourne Identity from 2002. It does matter who you keep close to you, and when that person is a desperate drifter with a tiny car, keep your head on a swivel because she doesn't know what she wants and she has zero sense of self-preservation. Show Notes Free Palestine Time for a road trip – keep your hands inside the vehicle, driver gets to choose the music, and for the love of God do not taunt the truckers. We watch Steve Zahn break all of those rules – probably – much to the detriment of his brother and everyone else they come in contact with in 2001's Joy Ride. When that justice is denied, the audience is often left in suspended emotional agitation. We want to believe that violent crimes are always solved, and the villainous perpetrators are caught. That order is restored. Yet, reality dictates a much less clear cut finale to crime stories. Memories of Murder explores this ambiguity in its depiction of a real-life serial killer case, where answers are elusive, and the moral certainties dissolve in a haze of bureaucratic stagnation, intellectual flaccidity, and craven dispositions. Director Bong Joon-Ho crafts a deeply unsettling vibe where the boundary between good and evil fades, exposing the futility of the hunt and the flawed nature of those involved. In contrast, The Bourne Identity is sleek, fast-paced, and decidedly straightforward. This chase movie skips across Europe with the hunter and hunted dichotomy awhirl. Director Doug Liman invokes the stacco precision of a spy thriller but interweaves melodrama with Jason Bourne's fractured psyche. In many ways, Bourne is more indebted to the dutch-angled noir tradition than its most obvious predecessor, James Bond. With its relentless action and tightly wound narrative, the film strips away the nuance of morality found in Memories of Murder while delivering a linear yet captivating tale of survival, deception, and revenge.
Erin and Brennan are back from summer vacation and are ready to take down CIA black ops teams WITH A BALLPOINT PEN!!! Contrary to other spy films, we're looking at you James Bond and Mission Impossible, the Bourne movies tell the story of believable assassins. Do they have secret gadgets? Nope, just their minds and a lot of cash. We have Brian Cox being evil (as usual), Clive Owen dying (as usual), and Chris Cooper being evil (as usual). Can anyone say Muppet Movie? On the other hand, we have Matt Damon being hotter than ever with the largest GPS trackers in history. Now it's time to turn, walk away, and vanish.

Matt Damon ends his press tour for “The Instigators,” starring Damon and Casey Affleck, on this week's episode of Breaking Bread. Matt and Tom talk about everything from the day they met on the set for Steven Soderbergh's “The Informant” to Matt's forbidden love for the Yankees, breaking the hearts of Red Sox fans around the world (Boston). The pair talk Tom's dreams of being an Olympian/BMX champion, surfing together in Costa Rica, trying to make James Gandolfini laugh, and Robin Williams' beloved legacy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- See Matt Damon in “The Instigators”: “The Instigators” debuted in select theaters August 2, 2024 before its global premier on Apple TV+ August 9, 2024! In the film, Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police, but also backwards bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory's therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture—or worse. Directed by Doug Liman and written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, “The Instigators” also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Toby Jones, with Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman. 00:00 Intro 00:40 Midnight Run & ‘The Instigators' 04:19 Tom getting cut from ‘Air' 07:54 Matt can't remember what movies he's been in 10:35 Direct! 16:09 Matt Damon LOVES Derek Jeter 21:36 Tom Papa, average Olympian 24:40 Casey Affleck writing ‘The Instigators” 25:58 Car chase therapy & Bourne Identity 31:16 Instigators is pro-therapy 34:36 Jack Nicholson's advice 38:35 ‘Good Will Hunting' Robin Williams & Michael Stuhlbarg 43:31 Surfing in Costa Rica 45:36 You'll never run a marathon 47:02 Trying to make James Gandolfini laugh 48:15 Taste Test! It was a scene straight out of an action movie: specifically The Bourne Identity. On September 16, 2008, the captain of a Staten Island Ferry saw a woman floating face down in the Hudson River, near the Statue of Liberty. Horrified and thinking they found a dead body, two deckhands jumped in a rescue boat and went to her. When they reached the woman, one picked her up by her ankles, while another picked her up by her shoulders. To everyone's shock, the woman took a gasp of air and started crying. This is how Hannah Upp was found after she went missing– the first time.Over the next decade, Hannah Upp, a young, well-liked teacher, would go missing two more times. After her first two rescues, she had no idea where she had been or how she had spent her time. On September 14, 2017, Hannah was living in St. Thomas, on the U.S. Virgin Islands. She had survived Hurricane Irma, and three days before Hurricane Maria was poised to hit, Hannah Upp disappeared for a third time. Did she perish in the water, as many people believe, or is she still out there somewhere, with no idea who she is?Anyone with information regarding Hannah Upp's disappearance is urged to contact the Virgin Islands Police Department at 340-772-5605.Buy the ebook! - And Then They Were Gone: True Stories of Those Who Went Missing and Never Came HomeSubmit a caseFind us everywhereGet episodes early and ad-free on PatreonMerch storeFor a full list of our sources, please visit our blogBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/and-then-they-were-gone--5360779/support.
Remember when action movie heroes didn't have to think and just beat up a load of bad guys? Jason Bourne heralded the change when The Bourne Identity came out in 2002, and heroes became as vulnerable as they could be dangerous. It was a troubled production, led by Doug Liman, who fought for years to get the rights to the material, and get the movie made in his own chaotic and frenetic directorial style - a style that didn't sit well with the producers or the executives at Universal.Liman didn't just want another generic action spy movie, but an art film that the studio could sell as an action movie, and his lead actor Matt Damon agreed. Damon wanted to play this every man hero - the All-American boy next door who could also take on several trained operatives at once. The production was plagued with multiple delays, rewrites, reshoots and shots of Jägermeister.Warner Bros had let the rights they originally hold revert back to the original author Robert Ludlum in 1999, so how did they end up in a lawsuit over lost royalties from The Bourne Identity, a movie not even made by them?I would love to hear your thoughts on The Bourne Identity (2002) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! The 2024 summer movie season continues to struggle as newcomers Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Garfield Movie, essentially tied for the number one spot for the holiday weekend, each debuting at a muted $31 million; the worst Memorial Day weekend at the box office in almost 30 years. Furiosa particularly came in lower than estimates as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road and receiving the same B+ Cinemascore. Advance tickets for Deadpool & Wolverine became available last Monday, resulting in an estimated 200,000 tickets sold for roughly $9 million and enough to break the record for first-day, R-rated ticket sales.
