One of the most-cultured performances during Howard Kendall's tenure, the European Cup Winners' Cup final goes down as one of the greatest nights in Everton Football Club's history. The club's first and only European piece of silverware was achieved with a 3-1 on a sensational night in Rotterdam against Rapid Vienna. The final was held at Feijenoord Stadion in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on 15 May 1985. Everton, which dominated throughout, won the match 3–1 thanks to goals by Andy Gray, Trevor Steven and Kevin Sheedy. ‘Where life had no value, and death sometimes had its price. That is why bounty hunters appeared.' For decades, the Italian, or Spaghetti Western, has entertained and thrilled cinema audiences all over the world. Its distinct style, as well as its inventive musical scores, has influenced and inspired actors, filmmakers, and composers. It is a genre that is still enjoyed today by many. This unusual but entertaining ensemble of films influenced not just the western film as we knew it, but also had a lasting effect on many other movies. Some of which were produced long after Italian westerns had ridden off into the proverbial sunset of cinema history. On today's episode, join Jason Drury and special guest Italian Western music expert John Mansell as they uncover the musical delights of this quirky but important collection of sagebrush sagas. The unique musical sounds crafted by the composers you will hear go largely unnoticed and underappreciated today. Enjoy! John Mansell's book, ITALIAN WESTERN: VIOLENT IMAGE, SAVAGE SOUNDTRACK – THE MUSIC OF SPAGHETTI WESTERNS is available now on Amazon. Chris Beesley is joined by guests Gavin Buckland and David Prentice for a a special edition of the Royal Blue podcast to mark the 40th anniversary of Everton's 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in the European Cup-Winners' Cup semi-final second leg, an occasion widely-regarded as the greatest night in Goodison Park's history. After a goalless first leg in what was then West Germany, Everton, roared on by a passionate home crowd, recovered from a goal down at half-time to power through to what remains their only European final. In what proved to be a legendary team talk, manager Howard Kendall told his players at the interval that "The Gwladys Street would suck the ball into the net," and so it proved with goals from Graeme Sharp and Andy Gray before Trevor Steven's iconic late clincher. Gavin and David, who were both present at Goodison to witness the action, share their memories along with exclusive interviews from Everton players who starred that night: Derek Mountfield, Kevin Sheedy, Kevin Ratcliffe, Peter Reid and Trevor Steven. They were the broadcasting behemoths who helped Sky Sports and Premier League football change the media landscape forever. The wisecracking duo of Richard Keys and Andy Gray were arguably as famous as the footballers they provided the commentary track for, but at the peak of their punditry prowess, a series of scandals changed the pair's fortunes forever. Trevor Steven, the player who scored the goal that produced arguably the loudest roar in the Grand Old Lady's history, is Chris Beesley's latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. Steven netted the goal that clinched Everton's place in the 1985 European Cup-Winners' Cup final when he sealed the 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in what is widely regarded as Goodison Park's greatest-ever night. Born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Steven recalls his early football memories, growing up close to England's border with Scotland, before getting his big break in the professional ranks at Burnley, where he played alongside a previous Goodison Park: My Home guest Martin Dobson. Having been snapped up by fellow North Easterner Howard Kendall for £300,000 in 1983, Steven's first season on Merseyside finished with him delivering the cross for Andy Gray's goal to clinch the 2-0 victory over Watford in the FA Cup final. The following season, the midfielder was part of Everton's most-successful side with a memorable goal at Tottenham Hotspur in the title run-in as well as scoring both in the semi-final second leg and final in Europe. Steven then went on to become top scorer in a second Blues' League Championship-winning side in 1987 before departing Goodison after the 1989 FA Cup final. Now 61, Steven, who in 1991 commanded the joint-highest fee for a British player at the time when he moved from Rangers to Marseille for £5.5million, also delivers an important message about how through his work with charity Mindflow, he is trying to use football to help improve mental health in the construction industry. On the 10th September 2024, the music from the Marvel Animated series DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS was released by Dulcima Records on 10th September, exactly 40 years after the show premiered in the UK. The show's music was written by British composer Johnny Douglas, who, in addition to having a diverse career in film and television, was the composer of music for Marvel's animated series in the 1980s, which included SPIDER-MAN, SPIDER-MAN AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, G.I. JOE, and TRANSFORMERS. His filmography includes the classic 1965 sci-fi adventure CRACK IN THE WORLD and the British children's classic THE RAILWAY CHILDREN. Louise Camby, Johnny Douglas' granddaughter, is currently researching a book on his life and career called TRACKS TO MY GRANDFATHER'S SUCCESS, and in October 2024 she spoke with Jason Drury about her grandfather's life and work, how the book was coming along, and how, by chance, she discovered music from DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS in Johnny Douglas' archives. During the show, we'll hear music from DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS, as well as other music from Johnny Douglas' career. It's FA Cup weekend, ladies and gents. Unfortunately though, if non-league Tamworth nick a point against Spurs, they won't be getting a replay at Tottenham. Obviously that's a crying shame, but what should the teams at the top of English football do to compensate those at the bottom?Marcus, Luke, and Andy also ask whether José Mourinho would make a good firefighter manager and respond to your suggestions about the gadgets Richard Keys could hand over to Andy Gray, the new James Bond.Find us on Bluesky, X, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, and email us here: show@footballramble.com.Sign up to the Football Ramble Patreon for ad-free shows for just $5 per month: https://www.patreon.com/footballramble.***Please take the time to rate us on your podcast app. It means a great deal to the show and will make it easier for other potential listeners to find us. After Wayne Rooney's dismissal this week, it means yet another of Sir Alex Ferguson's greatest proteges has found the managerial hot seat far too hot. A listener asks Marcus, Luke and Vish why this keeps happening.Plus, why have there suddenly been so many disruptors to the so-called ‘top six' in recent years? What's the point of pre-match press conferences? And for some reason, we imagine what Andy Gray would have sounded like cast as James Bond.Remember, you can only get in touch with the show if you have a verified X account. Or a Cyber Truck. This week we're discussing why meat is a critical ingredient for dogs to thrive rather than survive! We're joined by Andy Gray of The Farmer's Dog and pet food consultant, Caroline Griffith, to talk about the nub of the issue when it comes to processed foods versus fresh whole foods. We chat about the worrying trend of Veganism for dogs, which understandably prompts a conversation to remind people about why feeding your dog on a lot of meat is ‘appropriate' for a dog.Highlighting the on-going conversation of plant based diets (many of which are overly processed!), over meat and the consequences of both. And the irony in that why feeding dogs raw can actually contribute to sustainability as well as promoting a dog's optimal health.Dispelling some myths on feeding raw meaty bones, rather discussing their nutritional benefits and as a key source of instinctual enrichment. We also discuss the billing of meats as ‘human-grade', and what that actually means, and how this is represented by FEDIAF guidelines. We highlight the selling point used more and more of being grass fed, but does that mean livestock are finished on grass, and what does that mean?Plus we talk about a new range launching very soon containing a mix of novel, species appropriate, and health boosting ingredients! The Farmer's Dog website and InstagramFollow Caroline on InstagramFor more about Anna visit her websiteTheme music and production by Mike Hanson for Pod People ProductionsCover art by Jaijo DesignCover photo by Rhian Ap Gruffydd of Gruff Pawtraits
Adam Hurrey is joined by David Walker and Nick Miller for the Adjudication Panel. For this interview special of Electric Friends, I'm speaking to Andy Gray, one of the most sought-after DJs, songwriters, producers and composers of the last few decades.Andy made a name for himself in the early 90s in the growing dance music scene, with his remixes and work with his group Amoeba Assassin, and for his work with Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto label. He has gone on to produce or remix music by a wide range of artists such as The Human League, Tori Amos, New ORder, Tears for Fears, Moby, U2, John Foxx and many more.He is also a prolific film and TV soundtrack composer, on projects such as Swordfish, Get Carter and Hunters, and he also composed and produced the iconic Big Brother theme in the UK.He has also had a long association with Gary Numan, whom he counts as a good friend. He has collaborated and remixed Gary's music many times, including appearances on the Hybrid, Jagged and Dead Son Rising albums. In particular, he remixed the brilliant version of A Prayer for the Unborn, which we hear at pretty much every Gary Numan gig today.I caught up with Andy to talk about his career, how Gary's music inspired him as a youth, and what his experiences of working with Gary have been, and what we can look forward to in the future. Our latest Official Everton Podcast looks back at the all-too-brief, but nonetheless spectacular, Everton career of Andy Gray. November 2023 represents 40 years since the Scottish centre-forward joined the Blues. Gray was plucked from Wolverhampton Wanderers by Howard Kendall and went on to have an unbelievable impact on a team that went from struggling to find its way to becoming arguably the best in Europe. Host Darren Griffiths speaks to Gray himself and is also joined by Dave Prentice and Gavin Buckland, with contributions from Gary Stevens and the former Liverpool Echo Sports Editor, Ken Rogers, who reveals that he discovered Gray's recruitment from an eagle-eyed Evertonian who had spotted him in a shop on Goodison Road. We learn that Everton were linked with Gray in the mid-1970s when Billy Bingham was the Blues manager, and the youngster was playing alongside Walter Smith at Dundee United. Everton statistician and historian Buckland tells us that Kendall was weighing up moves for an England striker and an Everton legend when he brought Gray in from Wolves. We also hear about when Gray threatened to walk out on the Club when he wasn't selected for an FA Cup tie and the man himself declares that if he could play one game again it would undoubtedly be the match against Bayern Munich at Goodison Park. We discuss whether Kendall would have kept Gray had we been allowed to take part in the 1985/86 European Cup and it's suggested that had he done so, then maybe Liverpool wouldn't have won the double that season. Gray speaks passionately about his time at Everton and agrees with the notion that the success of the mid-80s was probably an antidote for a challenging period in the history of the city of Liverpool. Everton never lost when Gray scored and that sums up his infectious desire to win football matches for the Blues. “My best memory was signing and my worst memory was leaving,” he says.
This year marks the 45th anniversary of Everton legend Bob Latchford scoring 30 league goals in a truly memorable campaign. At the start of the 1977/78 season, a national newspaper offered £10,000 to the first player to hit the 30 target, as it hadn't been done for a number of years. It went to the last game, but Latchford slammed home a late penalty against Chelsea at Goodison Park to claim the prize. In this latest Official Everton Podcast, we look back at the career of the striker who Evertonians regularly claimed could ‘walk on water'. Hosted by Darren Griffiths, alongside Dave Prentice and Gavin Buckland, we look back at Latchford's career, with audio contributions from teammates Jim Pearson and Martin Dobson. The conversation is decorated by commentary from some of Latchford's most memorable goals. We hear about how he was linked with Everton during the reign of Harry Catterick and of how Bill Shankly tried to persuade Latchford to join Liverpool. And did you know that Howard Kendall considered re-signing him when he was also after Andy Gray in 1983? We also discuss why a striker with such a fantastic goalscoring record was only rewarded with 12 international caps and we wonder whether the outcome of that infamous 1977 FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool would have been different had Latchford played. After that memorable season when he plundered 30 league goals, Latchford only managed 23 over the entire course of the next three campaigns. We ask why? Bob Latchford's place in any Everton Hall of Fame has long been assured and Blues of any generation will enjoy listening to this special tribute podcast.
