“Sound Speed Action” is back with the newest episode in our countdown to Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. Now we're entering Christopher McQuarrie mode with the next film: Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015).Writer and veteran Hollywood script doctor Christopher McQuarrie directs his first Mission Impossible and assembles a great team behind the camera to inject more energy into this thrill ride. Joe Kraemer delivers a pulsing orchestral score straight out of the original TV series. Eddie Hamilton joins as the wizard editor (Top Gun: Maverick, Kingsman), keeping everything moving at a fun clip.We talk about what we really enjoyed. Cruise is great, but Simon Pegg's Benji really steps up and commands his scenes. Rebecca Ferguson's debut as MI6 agent Ilsa Faust is superb—she elevates the movie with charisma and badassery. Sean Harris is fun as our super creepy villain, though it's tough to get too excited since the bar for villains hasn't been set very high. Alec Baldwin as Hunley is fantastic, and McQuarrie uses him brilliantly as a way for the franchise to poke fun at itself (“Sir, Hunt is the living manifestation of destiny—and he has made you his mission”). The Vienna Opera House sequence is a unique thrill. Some odd choices pop up—the snakeskin shirt (you'll know it when you see it), and a bad CGI car flip. But honestly, there's not much to knock.McQuarrie's been hyped up a lot on this show already, and now that we're here at his first Mission as director… what do you think? Enough action for you? We haven't even begun yet.Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is available to stream now on Prime Video and Paramount Plus. It's also available to rent and buy now on all platforms. In addition to Cruise's magnetic portrayal of the stoic drifter, the film features standout performances by Rosamund Pike as Helen Rodin (known for Gone Girl and Die Another Day), whose sharp intellect and determination add layers to the investigation along with veteran actor Richard Jenkins (The Visitor, Step Brothers, The Way of Water), David Oyelowo (Selma, Interstella), Robert Duvall (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, To Kill a Mockingbird), + a chilling turn from Werner Herzog (Fitzcarraldo, Nosferatu The Vampire, Grizzly Man) as the Zec, & our FIRST exposure to Jai Courtney (The Suicide Squad, Terminator: Genisys, Divergent). This week, every good team needs a greaseman, and boy do we have one, as we're putting a team together to knock down three Vegas casinos in one night, in a movie that is just as clever and funny as it is slick and stylish. It's 2001's Ocean's Eleven, directed by Steven Soderbergh, written by Ted Griffin, and starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, Elliott Gould, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Bernie Mac, Don Cheadle, Carl Reiner, Eddie Jemison, Shaobo Qin and Topher Grace. Soderbergh is clearly having a ball bringing this material to life with an all-star cast of capital-M capital-S Movie Stars, but the movie is more understated than its more dazzling sequels, and never loses sight of the human heart at its core that makes all the action matter in the first place. It's a beautiful film, visually and emotionally, and feels like the kind of adult-oriented entertainment that Hollywood seems hard-pressed to cook up these day. Plus: J Mo's been to theatre to see Soderbergh's first of two new entries in 2025, and is back with a theatrical field report on the POV ghost story Presence. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, Ocean's Eleven is currently streaming on Crave in Canada and Max in the United States. Other works discussed on this episode include Heartburn, Longlegs, Seven, The Silence of the Lambs, Black Bag, Kimi, Gladiator II, Jaws, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Michael Clayton, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part I, Hulk, Saturday Night, Man of Steel, Dawn of the Dead (2004), Go, Marie Antoinette, The Last Showgirl, Ocean's 12, Ocean's 13, Out of Sight, Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Fight Club, The Long Goodbye and countless more. Next week, we're kicking off another February of wall-to-wall rom-coms as Love Month kicks off with Steve Martin's L.A. Story, which is currently free to stream in Canada at the time of publication of the CTV app. On Valentine's Day, it's Nicolas Cage and Cher in Moonstruck, followed by Jerry Maguire on the 21st. And we'll close out the month with another Hayley selection in the podcast canon as we induct 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

This week, we don't step behind the mic to be an audio driver... we do it because we're driven, as we go under the hood with the Wachowski sisters' much-maligned avant garde anticapitalist art film (for kids!), the 2008 anime adaptation Speed Racer, written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, and starring Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, Roger Allam, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benno Fürmann and Richard Roundtree. Turned loose on kid-friendly fare after R-rated successes, the Wachowskis served up a visionary piece of art about what it means to be an artist, and the struggle to create under capitalism. A box office flop upon its release, it's gained a cult following in the years since, and count Justin as a Day 1 believer as he saw it twice in IMAX and all of its technicolor splendor has likely been imprinted on his eyelids ever since. It's a contentious pick to close out Masterpiece Month, a nomination for canon consideration so audacious that it just may test the limits of the very friendship undergirding this podcast. But fret not! Beyond hearing a nerdy boy yap about his nerdy interest for an impossibly long time, we also mark the midway point of the year by revealing our Top 5 films of 2024 thus far. If you'd like to watch Speed Racer before listening to this episode, it is sadly unavailable to stream in both the US and Canada at the time of publication. But you should see it. It's great. (Can you guess which one of us writes this stuff?) Other works discussed in this episode include Twisters, Civil War, Hit Man, Late Night with the Devil, Longlegs, Devil, Love Lies Bleeding, Dune: Part Two, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Challengers, Speed, Midnight Run, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Lisa Frankenstein, National Treasure, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pirates of the Caribbean II: Dead Man's Chest, The Matrix, V For Vendetta, Pacific Rim, Cars, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Yellowjackets, Nope, Alita: Battle Angel, and Gran Turismo, among countless others. We'll be back next week to kick off another themeless month of madness on the show, as we're following Masterpiece Month by purposefully steering the ship directly into an iceberg and watching the movie that killed Hayden Christensen's leading man career. Yes, it's another box office dud from the summer of 2008: Doug Liman's Jumper, which sadly just like Speed Racer is not currently available to stream. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Let's go back to (almost) the beginning with our very in-depth conversation with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie. In this episode, McQuarrie talks about his involvement in “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” how that wound up with him directing “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” and finally about the just-released (at the time) “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.” It's a wonderful chat with one of our favorite people. “I didn't really know I was allowed to be a screenwriter, so I didn't consider that as a career or life option growing up Southeast of England,” says Drew Pearce. “People I knew didn't go to University and they definitely didn't work in movies.” “Throughout my life, I have shown a staggering lack of imagination in thinking I can do these jobs. But when I meet a person who does the job, I do think, ‘Well, if they can do it, I can do it,'” he jokes. After exploring paths as a musician, a magazine writer, and the comic scene, he eventually created a sitcom in the UK. The show received mixed reviews in the UK, but found its way to America where it found some traction. “I just so happened to do a show about off-duty superheroes, set in a pub, the same year that Iron Man came out, so those things dove-tailed.” The series was called No Heroics. Thanks to the show, this eventually led to a meeting with Kevin Feige (President of Marvel Studios) and work on projects such as Iron Man 3, Marvel One-Shot: All Hail the King, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Lego Marvel's Avengers, Hotel Artemis, Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, and most recently, The Fall Guy. “Kevin Feige forced us together,” he says about his collaboration with Shane Black. “Legendary screenwriter Shane Black did not want me as a co-writer,” he jokes. “It was an arranged marriage that could have been incredibly short-lived. Shane was the Director so he had the power to fire me, but I had grown up with Shane's movies and there's a huge part of what I do.” “But honestly, there was an organic exchange of tones. He liked that I came from comedy and I liked how American his stuff is.” Black's credits also include Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Nice Guys, and The Predator. “Weirdly, like two characters in a Shane Black movie — the grizzled old veteran and the arrogant younger copy — we learned from each other and a bond was formed.” That said, over the last 14 years, Pearce has written or worked on 60+ movies, including unmade specs, but he's only known for the action-comedies listed above. Over twenty years ago, director Michael Mann began to think about bringing the story of Enzo Ferrari to the silver screen. It's probably the most anticipated film of 2023- a look into the personal life of the notoriously private Enzo (played by Adam Driver) and his wife Laura (Penelope Cruz), framed by the backdrop of the 1957 running of the Mille Miglia: the grueling thousand-mile Italian road raceWhen it came to capturing the thrill and brutality of racing on film, there was only one person Mann could trust with the task: stunt coordinator Robert Nagle. Robert's resume is impressive. He's an Academy Award winner, and the maestro behind car stunts in films like Baby Driver, John Wick, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Gran Turismo, Ford v. Ferrari and more.In this episode, Robert takes us behind-the-scenes of Ferrari and shares his insights on the art of driving fast on film."Ferrari" clip courtesy NEON Productions (copyright 2023).SUPPORT THE POD:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/hpheritageINSTAGRAM: @horsepowerheritageYOUTUBE:https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=horsepower+heritageHORSEPOWER HERITAGE IS NOW ON TWITTER:https://twitter.com/TargaStorioSUPPORT OUR SPONSORS:http://modelcitizendiecast.comhttps://www.drivetowardacure.orgFIND US ON THE WEB:https://www.horsepowerheritage.comSupport the showHORSEPOWER HERITAGE: THE PEOPLE AND STORIES BEHIND THE MACHINES.

Rick English stunt performer talks spy movie stunts with Dan and Tom on their show Cracking the Code of Spy Movies. If you've seen at least three spy or action movies in the last two decades, you've likely seen Rick's work in at least one of them. Rick is an award-winning stunt performer who has been involved with the James Bond, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, BATMAN, and KINGSMAN franchises. He was also in INCEPTION, The 355, FAST AND FURIOUS, and many more movies over his 20+ year career. In this episode we discuss some of scenes from some the movies he's worked on (Including CASINO ROYALE, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - ROGUE NATION, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT, BOURNE ULTIMATUM, JASON BOURNE, INCEPTION, KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE and more.) Among the topics we discuss, Rick tells us how the stunt performer business works, how the motorcycle crash stunt he did in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - ROGUE NATION was done, and he tells how they did the zero-gravity hallway fight in INCEPTION, what he wants from a stunt coordinator. Listen to find out how. It is fascinating how they do these things and what can be planned and what can't. His explanation of that motorcycle crash was quite eye-opening. This episode helps the moviegoer understand the role of the stunt performer and how they are used. Rick explains some of the techniques they used for some of the specific stunts. After listening, you'll understand why he's won so many awards. Our next episode will also be with Rick English. He will tell us all about the stunts in the KINGSMAN series, including the church fight scene and the meat grinder. A Rogue Nation? Seems irresponsible but alright. This time around as we continue on through the Mission Impossible saga Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt must do another big stunt, this time strapped to the side of a plane, and butt heads with a super secret evil spy force lead up by Sean Harris' Solomon Lane. With newcomver Rebecca Ferguson joining the crew there's a lot to like in this fifth entry which somehow isn't getting worse. How? Magic I guess who knows. Time Codes - Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (00:01:27), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (01:16:11), Mission: Impossible - Fallout (02:14:34)Here's the second half of Matt and Eric's MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE rundowns, from Brad Bird's GHOST PROTOCOL into the official Christopher McQuarrie Era of ROGUE NATION, FALLOUT (and beyond). A (kinda/sorta) more permanent IMF team for Ethan Hunt (plus one Isla Faust) starts to take shape as a new terrorist group threatens humanity on a mass scale.
Kit and Steve's mission - if they choose to accept it - is to rate and review every single movie in the Mission: Impossible franchise on Mission: Impossible: Mondays! This week they review Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. It seems Tom Cruise has finally found his soul mate in director Christopher McQuarrie. Never before has the Mission franchise felt this perfect (up to this point). Kit and Steve gush about how much they love this movie, and how much they love Ilsa Faust! Joining Tom in this movie we have Rebecca Ferguson, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris, Alex Baldwin, and Simon McBurney. See the list for our entire lineup for SEASON 13 on our Letterboxd page!“We're kind of formulating a plan B, although technically it's a plan C.”Everyone's Gone Rogue in Rogue NationChristopher McQuarrie did some uncredited rewrites on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, though he'd worked with Tom Cruise a number of times in the past, having written and directed Jack Reacher then writing Edge of Tomorrow. Clearly, his strength as a storyteller, perhaps more than his friendship with Cruise, led Cruise to offer him the opportunity to help the fifth Mission: Impossible film. That opportunity to not only work on the script but also direct seemed to be the right formula Cruise (perhaps more the producer than the star) was looking for to bring the franchise into right zone he'd been looking for from the start. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our journey through our Mission: Impossible series with a conversation about McQuarrie's 2015 film Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Here's a hint at what we talk about.Right out of the gate, we're given an exciting action sequence, one which had been advertised relentlessly to draw audiences to the film to see Cruise hanging off the side of a plane. For real. It's insane but makes for a great start to the movie. Plus, we get more comedy with the team and intrigue as the IMF gets shut down by the Senate, which puts Ethan on the run. It's a thrill of a way to start the movie that shows we're on the right track now.The team is great, keeping Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, and the ever-consistent Ving Rhames from the last film. It's our first full repeat, and it works well. We do have questions about the roles of each of the team members though. Are they given enough delineation between them? Is this, perhaps, why Jeremy Renner doesn't return? The big surprise is the addition of Rebecca Ferguson who proves herself Cruise's equal and brings tremendous chemistry as a British spy working both with and against Hunt at seemingly every turn. She's incredibly compelling and is stunning in that dress. Of course the villain has to work for the team to be of any interest, and we're fans of what Sean Harris is bringing as ex-MI6 operative Solomon Lane, the head of The Syndicate. He's compelling, and the plot moves in exciting directions dictated by him. It's a thrill of a film in a franchise that only gets better. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in.
