This week on the Deadpod a fine show from the spring of 1982, one often overlooked due to the notoriety of the next night's performance.  This show, from April 17, 1982 in Hartford Connecticut features quite a nice first set, with fine versions of Bird Song and Jack-A-Roe (which was still relatively new at the time). I also would call your attention to the arrangement of El Paso, which is played at a much slower tempo than the usual polka arrangement, and benefits from that difference, I think. Also an interesting set closer here with 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter'. The first two songs in this set are from an audience source, the rest come from a soundboard.   Grateful Dead Hartford Civic Center Hartford, CT 4/17/1982 - Saturday One      New Minglewood Blues [7:46] > Sugaree [12:10] > El Paso [5:19] Jack-A-Roe [4:48] Little Red Rooster [8:51] Tennessee Jed [8:44] It's All Over Now [8:18] Bird Song [9:27] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [5:44]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod042525.mp3     My thanks for your support.

This week's Deadpod features a great audience recording of a fabulous show by the late Jerry Moore..this is from January 20, 1979 at Shea's Theater in Buffalo New York.  I think this is a great first set... all of these are performed so very well. I especially love the tone of Garcia's work on 'Sugaree' and 'It's All Over Now'.. at times the vocals are a little low in the mix, but in the words of Mickey Hart - turn it up! :) The rest of this set is nothing to sneeze at either, especially the smoking hot 'Jack Straw' to close it out..  One note .. apparently the show started some 2 hours late ;)  Grateful Dead Shea's Theatre Buffalo, NY 1/20/1979 - Saturday One      The Promised Land [4:21]   Sugaree [11:45]   El Paso [4:10]   Peggy-O [8:12]   It's All Over Now [7:41]   Jack-A-Roe [4:31]   New Minglewood Blues [5:35]   Stagger Lee [6:46]   Jack Straw [5:32]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012425.mp3  I hope you enjoy it! and thanks for your kind support!!

This week's Deadpod features one of the January shows in the Grateful Dead's history - this one from January 18, 1979 in Providence, Rhode Island. This is a nice first set, energetic, especially for the time period (in a month Keith Godchaux would be leaving), and features some nice versions. I am especially fond of the 'Cassidy' here but there are several excellent tunes in this first set.   Grateful Dead Providence Civic Center Providence, RI  1/18/1979 - Thursday One      The Promised Land [4:22]   They Love Each Other [7:31]   Mama Tried [2:45] > Mexicali Blues [4:10]   Friend Of The Devil [8:10]   Cassidy [4:50]   Jack-A-Roe [4:38]   Looks Like Rain [7:04]   Ramble On Rose [8:15]   New Minglewood Blues [5:29]   Deal [6:47]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011025.mp3  Hope this finds you well and out of harm's way.... thank you for your kind support!

This week the Deadpod moves twenty years in the future from last week's set,  this one which took place on March 5, 1992 at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton Virginia. The first set, short as was the norm during this period of the band's existence, opens with a fine 'Help>Slip>Frank'. The boys sound energetic and Jerry plays some fine licks here, especially during the 'Slipknot'. A long bluesy 'The Same Thing' follows then  a sweet 'Jack-A-Roe'. Phil delivers a great 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues' and Bobby closes the set with a strong 'Let It Grow'  We'll have the second set next week.    Grateful Dead Hampton Coliseum Hampton, VA 3/5/1992 - Thursday One     Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; The Same Thing ; Jack-A-Roe ; Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues ; Let It Grow   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031723.mp3  Hope you have a safe and happy St. Patrick's Day!  thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod

As Christmas approaches, Hanukkah continues, and the big snowstorm closes in on many of us, I hope that this week's Deadpod brings you some joy this week!  I bring you the first set of what is a really great show from December 30, 1989 in Oakland California. The opening 'Bertha' flows into a rare first-set 'Good Lovin' which then flows into an excellent version of 'Sugaree'. The entire set is quite well played, and while Airto joins at 'Sugaree' and remains the rest of the show, his contributions are a bit hidden most of the time.  The set-closing 'Music Never Stopped' features some interesting Midi Horns from Garcia, but the entire set is energetic and a pleasure to hear. I hope you enjoy it.    Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 12/30/1989 - Saturday One      Bertha [6:22] > Good Lovin' [4:02] > Sugaree [9:30]    Walkin' Blues [6:42]    Jack-A-Roe [4:10]    When I Paint My Masterpiece [5:02] West L.A. In this week's episode of 36 From The Vault we return to the hallowed month of May 1977 for two complete shows, and the only six-CD set of the Dick's Picks series. With two shows that prelude the stunning Dick's Picks 3 set, we hear the sleek brilliance of 1977 Dead across 6+hrs of music. The May 19 side of the release is highlighted by some of the Dead's best song's utilized throughout 1977 with a particularly stunning “Peggy-O” on Disc One. The magic is found throughout Disc Three where “Terrapin Station” > “Playin' In The Band” -> “Uncle John's Band” -> “Drums” > “The Wheel” > “China Doll” -> “Playin' In The Band” showcases seamless creativity and exceptional flow throughout. While May 21 shares many of the same songs with the famed Cornell set from May 8, it's bolstered by an outstanding “Jack-A-Roe” on Disc Four as well as a top tier “Scarlet Begonias” -> “Fire On The Mountain” on Disc Five. Disc Six features the entire second set of 5/21 with “He's Gone” -> “Drums” -> “The Other One” showcasing the evolving improvisational approach of The Dead during this period. Of note, “One More Saturday Night” makes its long-awaited DP debut during this set. Finally, Rob & Steve discuss the bonus tracks included from October 11, 1977's show in Norman, OK. If you ever needed convincing of why May 1977 is so highly regarded by GD fans, this extended set should be all you need for convincing. 36 from the Vault is a production of Osiris Media. This show marks a significant event in the band's history - the last show with Keith and Donna in the group. It takes place on February 17, 1979 in Oakland. By this time, Keith's contributions had been steadily decreasing and while Donna was still, in my opinion, adding to the sound, it was clear that a change was going to have to happen.  This first set features the return of 'Greatest Story Ever Told' from a five year absence, as well as that last 'Passenger' with Donna (to my ears it never sounded right without her). 'Don't Ease' marks a return appearance as does 'High Time' as the band was mixing up the setlist which had grown a bit stale..The closing 'Lazy Lightin'>Supplication' is a clear highlight here....   Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 2/17/79 - Saturday     One      Greatest Story Ever Told [4:11] Don't Ease Me In [3:23]   Mama Tried [2:31] > Mexicali Blues [4:18]   Friend Of The Devil [9:08] Passenger [4:44]   High Time [6:25]   Looks Like Rain [6:33#]   Jack-A-Roe [5:20]   Lazy Lightnin' [3:26] > Supplication [5:11] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod022522.mp3    Peace

In this week’s episode we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 13, from Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY on May 6, 1981. A return to the 80’s & the Brent era, this is a puzzling installment in the larger volume that features a lot of repeated tracks, before showcasing some stellar jamming in a bonus segment late in the show. Highlighting Set I, we hear an inspired Brent on “Alabama Getaway,” and a fiery Jerry on “Jack-A-Roe,” before the two collaborate for a fantastic jam in “Deal.” In Set II we hear the first “Lost Sailor -> Saint Of Circumstance” of the Dick’s Picks series, before the latter fades into a 30+min wild bonus segment of “Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain” from 1979, which heard Brent push his ideas on the band to fascinating results. Returning to Nassau, the “He’s Gone -> Caution (Do Not Stop On The Tracks) -> Drums -> Jam -> The Other One -> Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad> Wharf Rat” segment is filled with surprises and improv, making it a highlight for the era and the volume. In the dark ages of the early-80s, this volume showcases what made this era confounding and also fascinating all at once. Steven and Rob focus on the joy/challenge of virtual tour listening projects, the band’s songwriting shifts & creative malaise at this time, the curiosities of Bob Weir’s political beliefs, and the best shows that surrounded this version.36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. One hundred years ago famed folk-song collectors Cecil Sharp and Maud Karpeles visited North Carolina and documented hundreds of ballads and folk songs that had their roots in the British Isles. The epicenter of our state's ballad singing tradition is Madison County, NC. In the second installment of Director's Cut, a special mini-season of Arts Across NC, Wayne Martin shares a "Jack-A-Roe," a ballad performed by Doug Wallin. Doug lived far up a holler in Madison County, and he learned how to sing ballads from his mother Berzilla. He once told Wayne Martin he sung all the time...even when he was falling asleep at night. "Doug himself was an extraordinary ballad singer for two reasons. The texts of his tunes were very full and well developed...plus he was very musical and he was able to put beautiful tunes to the songs themselves," says Wayne. The National Endowment or the Arts awarded Wallin the National Heritage Award in 1990. He passed away in 2000. _____ Director's Cut is a special music themed season of Arts Across NC, curated in celebration of Come Hear North Carolina, a campaign for the 2019 North Carolina Year of Music. In each episode NC Arts Council Director Wayne Martin will unearth a field recording from the archive he built during his 30+ year tenure with our agency. Each song represents a different region of North Carolina. "These pieces that I've chosen are part of the fabric of who we are as a people," says Wayne. "They are pieces that tell the story of North Carolina. Arts Across NC is a podcast by and about the North Carolina Arts Council. Merry Christmas!   As always, our Christmas Deadpod features some fine acoustic Dead.. this selection comes from a very special show - it took place back on December 6th, 1980 at the Mill Valley Recreation Center in Mill Valley California. The boys put on an acoustic set for some special needs children and young adults and while the performance was not amplified, it was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson. While there are acoustic sets that perhaps sound clearer or a big louder, surely there aren't any that come closest to the spirit of the holidays. I hope you enjoy these songs as you spend a peaceful, loving holiday with your family.   Grateful Dead Mill Valley Recreation Center Mill Valley, CA 12/6/80 - Saturday   Dire Wolf [3:24] ; On The Road Again [2:50] ; I've Been All Around This World [4:04] ; Monkey And The Engineer [2:22] ; Jack-A-Roe [4:47] ; Cassidy[5:16] ; Bird Song [8:02] ; Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie [5:32#] ; Ripple [4:15]     You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122515.mp3     As always my thanks for allowing me the honor of sharing this music with you my friends.    Peace and love.  the Professor

I decided to play the first show from this run, but it wasn't an easy choice as all three shows have their moments.. while the real highlights from this night come in set 2, this week's first set contains plenty of fine playing .. Jack Straw is nicely played, as is the Jack-A-Roe that follows. The entire set is well played, and solid, and a nice long first set as well. I am always pleased to hear Friend of the Devil, and the Cold Rain and Snow->Promised Land close the set on a real high note and leave us wanting more..  Richfield Coliseum, Richfield, OH (9/4/91)Let the Good Times RollJack StrawJack-A-RoeWalkin' BluesFriend of the DevilBlack-Throated WindTennessee JedMasterpieceCold Rain and SnowPromised Land You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod083013.mp3 Have a safe and happy Labor Day my friends!thank you so much for your support of the Deadpod - without which I would be unable to publish it..

I know my prejudices are fairly obvious - do I love 1977 Dead shows? Guilty.. I can't seem to go through the month of May without featuring one of these gems and I decided I didn't want to spoil that record this year.. thus this week's show. This is a gem, pure and simple. Beautiful recording, beautiful playing. Check out Jerry on Sugaree, and Donna on Sunrise. Passenger, one of my favorites of this era is a swirling whirlwind of color and sound.. Jack-A-Roe is pretty.. enjoy this.. have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and I hope this music helps lubricate it all.. I'm surrounded by beautiful Fall foliage here in Michigan this time of year and it brought to mind this quite remarkable period of Dead shows. I will never forget when I saw the Dead open up sitting around and playing accoustic music. I loved those shows, and unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of soundboards of complete shows from that period that are out but this is one and I hope that you enjoy hearing it as much as I do.Yes the acoustic sets may not have as much variety as we'd like - but I really doubt that you can avoid having a smile as you listen to the boys chat between tunes or sing along as you listen to Ripple.. its a real pleasure for me and I hope you enjoy it as well..Grateful DeadRadio City Music Hall10/26/80 - SundayOne : Iko, Iko Dark Hollow, It Must Have Been The Roses, On The Road Again, Jack-A-Roe, Csasidy, China Doll -> Ripple ..Electric -1 :Jack Straw -> Sugaree, Little Red Rooster, Brown-Eyed WomenYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod102309.mp3Be well and be kind to each other my friends..

This week I'm bringing you a show that really showcases, I think, what Brent Mydland brought to the band - in honor of the 18th anniversary of his last show with the Grateful Dead which occurred this week. This show, 9/2/79, is one of those Fall '79 shows where Brent really was out front and his playing was so spirited that I'm sure he inspired everyone else.. This week the first set, next week the conclusion.. I hope you enjoy it!! Grateful Dead Augusta Civic Center Augusta, ME 9/2/79 - Sunday One Jack Straw [6:23] ; They Love Each Other [7:44] ; Mama Tried [2:44] > Mexicali Blues [4:39] ; Stagger Lee [6:29] ; Cassidy [5:32] ; Row Jimmy [9:11#] ; New Minglewood Blues [6:17] ; Jack-A-Roe [5:04] ; The Music Never Stopped [8:04]You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod072508.mp3Thanks for listening!!
