For more than a year, a seven-foot creature with glowing red eyes and folded wings terrorized Point Pleasant, West Virginia—and just weeks after the sightings stopped, the Silver Bridge collapsed and killed 46 people, leaving the town to wonder whether the Mothman had been a monster, a warning, or something far worse.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources and full transcript): https://weirddarkness.com/RedEyesOfMothmanREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode:https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2p8s2fxtFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: Most everyone is familiar with the King James Bible, but did you know that King James also wrote a book on demonology during the witch hunts and trials? Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: November 15, 2021This episode of Weird Darkness, hosted by Darren Marlar, moves from a winged cryptid haunting a West Virginia river town to a Georgia teenager found dead inside a rolled wrestling mat, a Minnesota newlywed who vanished from a restaurant parking lot, and a king of England who wrote a manual on demons. It opens with the Mothman, first reported on November 15, 1966, when two young married couples driving past an abandoned World War II TNT plant near Point Pleasant, West Virginia, spotted a six- or seven-foot gray figure with folded wings and glowing red eyes that rose into the air and pursued their car down Highway 62 at over 100 miles per hour. That same night, contractor Newell Partridge of Salem watched his television fill with a strange pattern before his dog Bandit chased two red eyes toward the hay barn and disappeared forever, and the next day Roger Scarberry described passing a large dog's body near the city limits that was gone minutes later. Over the following year roughly 100 people, including Marcella Bennett, reported the creature alongside UFO sightings and men in black, and on December 15, 1967, the 700-foot Silver Bridge linking Point Pleasant to Ohio collapsed during rush hour and killed 46 people, cementing the belief that the Mothman had been a harbinger of the disaster. From there the episode turns to Kendrick Johnson, the 17-year-old three-sport athlete found dead on January 11, 2013, stuffed head-down inside a rolled wrestling mat in the old gym at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia. Investigators ruled the death an accidental positional asphyxia, theorizing the boy fell in reaching for a shoe, but his 19-inch shoulders could not fit through the mat's 14-inch opening, an hour of footage from all four gym cameras was missing and altered, and his organs were found removed and replaced with newspaper. A second and third autopsy revealed blunt force trauma to his neck and right chest, a fabricated confession recording sold to his family for $1,000 was exposed as a hoax by Sheriff Ashley Paulk, and the case, which once entangled FBI agent Randy Bell's sons Brandon and Brian Bell, was officially reopened on March 10, 2021.Vanishing from a restaurant parking lot is what happened next to Jerrilyn Mullins, a 28-year-old Oakdale, Minnesota, newlywed who left the dinner table at a Chi Chi's in Richfield around 9:00 p.m. on November 15, 1978, and was last seen by her husband's coworker Patrick Melbourne, who said he drove her 22 miles back to a Howard Johnson's and left her there. Her decomposed body surfaced in a Lake Elmo swamp on June 30, 1979, identified through dental records and jewelry, with two autopsies unable to determine a cause of death though her stomach contents placed her killing within an hour of leaving the restaurant. Melbourne, who carried a long record of sexual assault allegations and was later convicted of crimes against a 10-year-old girl, remained the prime suspect; husband Ron Mullins lost a 1989 wrongful-death civil suit for lack of evidence, and the Washington County case stayed unsolved when Melbourne died in 2015.The episode closes with King James VI and I, who returned from a 1589 trip to Denmark obsessed with witchcraft and published Daemonologie in 1597, the only treatise of its kind written by a reigning monarch. In its pages he catalogued the signs of demonic possession, describing superhuman strength exceeding six men, iron-hard skin that could not be pierced, and victims speaking languages they never learned, while arguing that demons inhabit the corpses of the pious and that only prayer and fasting, not Catholic ritual, could repel them. He acknowledged werewolves as men suffering an excess of melancholy rather than cursed creatures, dismissed fairies as illusions sent by the Devil, fixed the ratio of female to male witches at 20 to 1 by reasoning that women were more easily deceived as Eve had been, and produced a work that fueled the European and colonial witch hunts and shaped the weird sisters of William Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Over the years the Cleveland sports scene has had to endure some painful and heartbreaking losses, more then its fair share. From "The Fumble", to "The Drive", to coming oh so close with their baseball team in several instances in the fall classic. Yet the Cleveland Cavaliers finally answered the prayers of all northeast Ohio in 2016, erasing a 3-1 deficit in the NBA finals to give the city along Lake Erie its much needed and delayed championship, the city's first in several generations. Yet during the down years of Cleveland sports in the mid 1970s, it was their basketball team that filled the void, climbing from an obscure NBA expansion team to not only capturing the hearts of Cleveland fans but captured the attention of the entire basketball world. In this episode co hosts Dana Auguster and Charles Combs are heading back to the 1976 NBA playoffs to revisit one of basketball's most remarkable Cinderella stories—the "Miracle at Richfield." Just five years after joining the league as an expansion franchise, the Cleveland Cavaliers shocked the basketball world by defeating the heavily favored Washington Bullets and capturing the imagination of an entire city. We'll examine how a team of overlooked players, a passionate fan base, and a little bit of playoff magic combined to create one of the greatest upsets in NBA history. To contact the show please drop us a line at HIstorically.Speaking.Sports@Gmail.com.

Carey (who is also drummer for Bon Iver). It's a multimedia performance, including video from filmmaker Finn Ryan. The concert is presented by the North Shore Music Association, which Molly says curates “an excellent calendar of music throughout the year.”Molly adds: I can recall the first time that I saw them. I was blown away by their performance, with the drumming and the vocal soundscapes. And I said, “I'm going to see them wherever I can.”It's very multi-sensory. They have a vast array of instrumentation that they use, and then there's a beautiful visual backdrop. It's a film that they created to really support and amplify the storytelling aspect of it. The first time that I saw them, it became pretty clear that the intention really is to engage the listener on many levels, and with a purpose of [creating] human connection.— Molly DeanMagical realism without wordsActor Natalie Rae Wass of Minneapolis recently saw “Apartment 2B” at Red Eye Theater. There are no words in this masked show, which brings the characters in an apartment building together with a dash of magical realism. There are three more chances to catch the show: Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.Natalie says: It is a beautiful show that is created without spoken word. So it uses, of course, body language and scenery and lighting, music, sound effects to tell the story; but that makes it really universal and allows all of us to really see ourselves in every character. We laugh at our shared annoyances and insecurities but also celebrate our shared triumphs, and you know the possibility of humanity coming together.— Natalie Rae WassLetterpress with global reachDoris Rubenstein of Richfield recommends exploring the art of letterpress printmaking at the “Just Letters” exhibit at the Olson Gallery at Bethel University in St. Paul. There's a reception and letterpress demonstration with David Wolske Thursday from 6–8 p.m. in the gallery. The show runs through Dec. 19.The exhibit includes nine artists based in Minnesota and around the world. Rubenstein is a particular fan of Detroit-based Lynne Avadenka.Doris says: Her resume is about as long as my left arm. I've seen her work, and I only wish I had room on my walls for some of it.— Doris Rubenstein

In this episode, Pete Codella, managing director of business services at the Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity, talks with Tanner Thompson, CEO and owner of The Shirt Stop. Thompson discusses how he stumbled into entrepreneurship by purchasing an existing screen printing business in his hometown of Richfield, Utah. He explains that this decision was key to his success because the business already had an established team of seven employees. This strategic focus and its commitment to building long-term customer relationships have been instrumental in the company's growth. Since then, The Shirt Shop has expanded from seven to nearly 80 employees and from a small 1,500-square-foot shop to 45,000 square feet between two locations in Richfield and Lehi, Utah. Thompson highlights the significance of being based in rural Richfield, noting that it fosters a strong sense of community and integrity with customers. This long-game approach ensures that the company produces quality products and has a good reputation. The Shirt Shop has adapted to industry changes, shifting from a primarily word-of-mouth model to one that leverages social media and influencer marketing, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift allowed the company to expand its services beyond corporate swag to include branded apparel for social media influencers. Thompson plans to continue growing the company by taking on more textile manufacturing services and expanding into international markets.

From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.‘Of the Earth' joins the Detroit Lakes trollsFormer arts administrator Taylor Barnes of Jamestown, North Dakota, has a cabin in Detroit Lakes, and she admires the work of Project 412 in engaging the community to create public artworks. Last year, they welcomed Danish artist Thomas Dambo to create a series of large trolls, which remain on view in and around Detroit Lakes. Now, the trolls have company: artist-in-residence Olga Ziemska has created four large sculptures of natural materials, entitled “Of the Earth.” Three of the site-specific sculptures are temporary, but the fourth — a butterfly, currently in the works —will remain at the Ortenstone Gardens & Sculpture Park in Detroit Lakes.Taylor says: I think they had probably 300 volunteers that worked for over 100 hours with her creating the pieces [three of which portray women built at large scale]. One woman is emerging from the earth. Another head is lying on its side, kind of listening. The third one is the woman's head and torso. I particularly like this one, because she's just got this hair that looks as though it's being blown back by a hurricane that's all made out of twigs and branches and sustainable materials.— Taylor BarnesA one-woman musical, for those who waitLux Mortenson of Brooklyn Park is excited for people to see the one-woman musical “Penelope” at the Elision Playhouse in Crystal. It runs June 20–28.Lux says: I'm so thrilled that “Penelope” at Theatre Elision is coming back this month! I was fortunate enough to see it last year, and it was all I could talk about for weeks. Christine Wade is a marvel, a true multi-hyphenate who guides the audience on a tight and beautiful one-act journey through the eyes of Penelope, Odysseus' devoted, incredibly patient wife, as she waits for her husband to return home. Everything comes together to leave the audience spellbound. This is absolutely one NOT to miss this summer.— Lux MortensonNature in natural materials at the ArboretumArt enthusiast Doris Rubenstein of Richfield recommends visiting the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska to check out the new exhibit in the Reedy Gallery in the visitor center. It's called “Wax, Wire, Wood, and Clay,” and four artists use natural materials to create scenes from nature. It runs through July 28. It's recommended that visitors to the Arboretum book a ticket online in advance; children 15 and under are free with an adult.Doris says: Lynn Sarnoff-Christensen is the driving force behind the exhibition. Lynn is an encaustic artist; she explained it to me as the process of painting with molten beeswax. For this show, she's taken photos of birds' nests, incorporating them into the picture, along with other media like oils and pastels. Lynn invited three of her friends to join in the challenge of recreating nature with natural materials. Jodi Reeb sculptures weird seed pods and boulders from wire. Jim Gallop makes sculptures and bowls from knobby tree burls, and Cindy Syme carves tree portraits into clay tiles. So what better place could art lovers look for a show about the beauty of nature than the Arboretum, especially at this glorious time of year in Minnesota?— Doris RubensteinCorrection (June 12, 2025): An earlier version of this story incorrectly spelled Lux Mortenson's name. The story has been updated.

We are starting off in Cusco, then head into the sacred valley, and of course we're doing the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.   Next Monday our first ever AF Songwriting Course starts at 8pm EST. Connect with other sober musicians and improve your own song writing skills.   Sponsors for this episode include:   Better Help – 10% off of your first month   [03:19] Thoughts from Paul:   Imagine if aliens were cruising the universe and made a stop on planet Earth and they saw human beings drinking a substance that appeared to be damaging their lives.   But first, this is revealing of the power of the unconscious mind, or the paradigms in our society. If you take crack, cocaine, heroin and meth and right off the bat it's like, yeah, that will fuck your life up. But with alcohol, which has the data to show it's the most dangerous drug on the planet, it's flipped. Thankfully the correct messaging is starting to come out, but we have a way to go still.   Paul shares what he imagines would be the conversation between aliens and humans as they begin to ask questions about why we humans are consuming a toxic substance that has no health benefits and leaves them incapacitated the next morning.   [08:24] Paul introduces Nick:   Nick is married with three young children. He says he is a pop culture aficionado. He enjoys hunting, fishing, camping and spending time at their cabin a few hours away. Nick is big into fitness as well.   Being around alcohol was a normal thing for Nick growing up. He drank some in high school but hit the ground running in college with all the typical vices. He says he never had any major consequences and did well in school. The “work hard, play hard” mentality ran strong even after college.   Nick met his wife on a flight and soon after they began a long-distance relationship. Around this time Nick says his drinking was causing some negative behavior and people were noticing. A comment from his dad had Nick feeling some embarrassment so he started trying to moderate his drinking by limiting his consumption while socializing but drinking more at home alone. After attempting to moderate with the use of an app, Nick found himself drinking more in secret. He and his wife would have conversations about it, but he wasn't ready to quit. Nick was hiding bottles of alcohol throughout the house and drinking daily and going out less, so it wasn't as obvious to others that he had an issue. It was a constant battle in his mind.   One afternoon, Nick drove with his wife to pick up their daughter from preschool. When he came out of the school, his wife had taken the driver's seat. He had driven to the school drunk, and she decided enough was enough. She took them to the police station and had him arrested. When he came by the house the next day he expected her to kick him out but instead she hugged him and shared she just wanted him to get better.   Nick was able to stay sober for three months, but wasn't doing it for himself so it didn't stick. His drinking ended up worse than ever after that until he finally hit rock bottom. He wasn't doing well physically or mentally at this point. He woke one morning and decided to go to treatment that week.   Nick threw himself into treatment and experimented with several modalities. In the past he was resistant to AA but now embraces it as an abundant resource and enjoys the community. Nick's health has greatly improved, and he has been able to get off of all medications in addition to ditching the booze. Fitness is his medicine now, Nick says.   Nick's parting piece of guidance: You can do it. Do it for yourself, don't do it for someone else.   Recovery Elevator Alcohol is shit and we both know it.
