Amy is a former non fiction writer, journalist, speechwriter who's now concentrating on fiction, including mystery, romance and young adult works. Her most recent books are "The Potrero Complex" and "The NIghthawkers." (Please check on Amazon and/or Bookshop.org to find her books). Gloria Felice, Amy's mom, was a perfectionist layered with chronic anxiety and perhaps a lack of self confidence. So in turn, Gloria perhaps overcompensated by running an extremely orderly household. So there were a lot of rules. ie "the kitchen was closed," Amy explains so her mom could keep the kitchen clean and organized for a certain amount of time. Gloria was very domestically focused and an exceptional cook. One of Amy's favorite meals was her mom's fried chicken. Amy's mother was born in 1933 and was hoping to attend a free thinking college but her parent's refused so she settled for one year at Colby College in Maine and shortly married her husband at 18-19 years old. Amy says, "she didn't have a strong enough ego to be defiant. She would have had such a different life. She wanted to write and didn't have the confidence to do that." Felice had five children in seven and a half years and as the eldest, Amy took on the responsibilities of helping take care of her younger siblings. Amy explains that she was "an extremely obedient, good girl who never got into any trouble , which I now look back on and regret. I wish that I had acted out. I think I saved my acting out for my 60's." When it was time to leave home for college, because Amy's mom hadn't gone out into the world, worked outside the home and hadn't had her own life experiences, Amy didn't really have that close a relationship with her mother. Amy felt she didn't need her. Amy felt her mom couldn't give her what she needed because her mom hadn't experienced any of these things that Amy was searching for. My guest made a conscious decision to have a completely different relationship with her own daughter compared to what Amy experienced from her mother. Amy always felt safe and loved by her mother however Amy's tried "to have more of an adult friendship with her own daughter-to let her see me as a true person with emotions and flaws." Amy's still grappling with what kind of relationship she actually had with her mother. She knows that she was loved and taken care of and has similar characteristics, but "she made very conscious choices to be very different." Amy realized "that's not who I wanted to be." Episode 350 features Ray Wroten of the Baltimore-area band Bond & Bentley. Ray is an OG of the show, and it's always fun to have him back on. He is always funny, loves to talk shit, and is just a good, genuine dude in the scene. Bond & Bentley have a show coming up with Old Eastern at the Ottobar on 12/27. The band also re-released some of their back catalog to better represent the songs and how they sound in their current form. The release is called Remnants, and I featured the track “Smokin' Fatteez.” If you like it, you can stream it or buy the vinyl. I should note you can also find Ray hosting trivia on certain nights, such as at this podcast's favorite haunt, Fish Head Cantina. Check out Ray's socials or the band's socials for all updates and info. Also, big gratitude and thanks to everyone for supporting this podcast as it's grown and all the loyal listeners for checking in every week. We will always continue to try to support local artists wherever they may be. Episode 349 features Love Nut, the mid-90s Baltimore indie pop band that almost broke big but got lost in the major-label shuffle. Formed in the gritty heart of Charm City by dual-threat axe-man/vocalist Andy Bopp, guitarist/vocalist Max Mueller, bassist Dave Vespoint, and drummer Tom Sabia, Love Nut blended raw emotion with razor-sharp melodies on their 1996 debut Bastards of Melancholy. Snapped up by Interscope Records after a local indie release, the album earned rave reviews for its melancholic bite but sadly fizzled commercially. Fast-forward to now: After nearly three decades, Love Nut is coming back for a triumphant 30th anniversary reunion show this Friday, December 5th, at The Recher Theater in Towson, MD, just a stone's throw from downtown Baltimore. Special guests Splitsville join the fray for what promises to be a nostalgia-soaked explosion of guitars, harmonies, and that unmistakable Charm City swagger. In the episode I spoke with Dave and we talked about the band's origin story, the record industry then vs now, and the big show this weekend! Check out the Recher Theater website for tickets. This week Elle and I are in the Charm City, Baltimore MD. We are playing a little poker and getting to know some of the staff at the poker rooms here. In the Table Talk segment we discuss our time at the tables so far, India's Black Friday bill, and the passing of Jack McClelland. The code that we mentioned for Octopi Poker is ANTEUP and the link for the site is below. Our Call the Floor segment has Elliott discussing a situation where the prize pool dropped considerably between the final day 1 and day 2. He talks behind the scenes what could have happened and why. In our HOTW this week Patrick and I play hand that starts out as a mess and doesn't get much better. Somebody at the table ends up walking away hanging their head and it all started because they wanted to check the hand to the river. Finally I end the show with Joe's One Outer where I discuss the difference between just being unlucky and learning from the hand. Episode 320 features Clif from LetsBeAstronauts. This is his second time on the show. In short, it's a gig review–style episode. I wanted to find someone with boots on the ground to talk about the Turnstile benefit show that took place in Baltimore last weekend. The Grammy-nominated hardcore band staged a free benefit concert on Saturday (May 10, 2025) at Wyman Park Dell, drawing thousands of fans and raising over $35,000 for charity. The beneficiary was Health Care for the Homeless, which provides medical, dental, therapy, and addiction support services to Baltimore's most vulnerable populations. If you're in need of services or would like to donate, the website is listed below. I featured “Surgery from a Doctor with Broken Hands” by LetsBeAstronauts. Episode 310 features Brendan Clarke, AKA B. Clarke on Spotify, AKA @bassclarke on IG. He is quite possibly Baltimore's busiest bass player. He plays with Old Eastern, Crooked Plants, and many others, including my band. He recently released a brand new solo EP called Late Winter. In this episode, I featured his track “Piojitos.” The episode also includes my brother Dylan, making his return to the show after first appearing way back in episode 3. In our conversation, we talked a lot about all things Baltimore, as well as the story behind Brendan's track, which was loosely inspired by T. Swift. Thanks for listening and for supporting local art! The 2024 tour keeps rolling forward for the next week with our next stop in Baltimore, Maryland. Four years ago, the plan was to return to Baltimore before Covid happened, and then when it came time to reschedule the tour, the arena was under construction. So now they return for the first time in eleven years, which happens to be the only time they've played Baltimore as of this writing. This episode will feature the 2013 show, a show which is centrally focused on the loss of a music industry titan, Lou Reed. The band set the mood from the early going here as the local crowd would get a show that features songs they were hoping to hear along with a little bit of the unexpected. The idea of the setlist and lyrical content can certainly be traced to how they were handling the recently announced death of the Velvet Underground front man. Songs like Hard To Imagine and Given To Fly can be considered choices that reflect this, plus an inclusion of Take A Walk On The Wild Side as a Daughter tag, and more direct dedications like Man Of The Hour and a cover of Waiting For The Man. We'll also get into a little bit of a mystery as to what happened to Jeff at the end of this show, and a yellow shirt guy that had the time of his life. Keep in mind that this episode was recorded prior to the Philadelphia shows, so any conversation that you're begging to hear on Brain Of J will have to either wait for next week or is available to our on our Patreon reaction episode. We will however talk about MSG night 2 and how incredible that night was, plus a rating on how well Randy sang It's The End Of The World As We Know It on karaoke!
