Mark Bittman has been writing about food since 1980, and has been a leading voice in global food culture and policy for more than a generation. He has written thirty books, including the How to Cook Everything series, Food Matters, VB6 (the first popular book about part-time veganism), and, in 2021, Animal, Vegetable, Junk: A History of Food from Sustainable to Suicidal, which The New York Times called “epic and engrossing.”   Bittman spent three decades at the Times, where he created “The Minimalist” – a weekly column that ran for thirteen years without interruption – and had a five-year stint as the Sunday Magazine's lead food writer. At that same time – 2010 to 2015 – he became and remained the country's first weekly opinion writer at a major publication to concentrate on food. His influence on mainstream attitudes about food and agriculture during that period is immeasurable, and he is still consulted frequently by politicians, policy-makers, academics, NGO and non-profit leaders, and others concerned about the future of food.   He continues to produce books in the How to Cook Everything series, the general cooking bible for a quarter-century, and has hosted or been featured in four television series, including the Emmy-winning Showtime series about climate change “Years of Living Dangerously” and “Spain ... On the Road Again,” with Gwyneth Paltrow. He has won countless awards for journalism, books, and television. .   Bittman was a regular on the Today show from 2005 to 2010 (and still appears occasionally, as recently as this past October), and has been a guest on countless television and radio programs. His 2007 Ted Talk, “What's wrong with what we eat,” has been viewed five million times, and he was among the opening speakers at this year's Aspen Ideas Institute, where he spoke about Community Kitchen. He is a fellow at Yale and is on the faculty of Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health. Bittman is currently the editor-in-chief of The Bittman Project, which produces a newsletter, website, and the podcast “Food, with Mark Bittman.”   Mark lives in the Hudson Valley of New York with his partner, Kathleen Finlay, who runs the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming and is the founder of Pleiades, a national network of women leaders addressing environmental and social justice. He is the founder and current leader of Community Kitchen, about which more information is forthcoming months.  On this episode, Mark joins host Mitchell Davis and discusses improving the industrial food system in America, developing a national network of non-profit restaurants, and why nutritious food is a human right. CHECK OUT THE NATIONAL MEDITATION PLAYLIST ON YOUTUBE Week 28  - Celebrating Being On the Road Again! You can read this and more on my blog - barbarafaison.com/blog Remember the song On the Road Again by Willie Nelson? If you don't Google it. lol That's how I felt on Saturday. A few of the lyrics are: I can't wait to get on the road again On the road again Goin' places that I've never been Seein' things that I may never see again And I can't wait to get on the road again. For a few weeks or longer, my car has been making some weird sounds, and well, I've been acting like I didn't hear them. Lol. You know the minor inconveniences of life that require your attention, oftentimes we/or I may avoid them, because I just don't wanna deal with it. I have lived long enough to know that that doesn't usually work out so well. Avoidance btw is not a good strategy. I would get in the car, and ask for guidance and protection, and it was working out pretty good. Until this happened… Last Tuesday as I was about to leave to go to the store my car began squealing when I started it. I cringed as my husband came over to look at the car, he diagnosed it as possibly something related to belts or the AC. Ugh. Drats, I knew I was about to get off the road. You see, this car was my mother's car. It's a 2007 Lexus SUV with over 200K miles. I told my husband I had been hearing strange noises for a few weeks so we knew it wasn't safe to drive. I began cleaning out the car so it could be towed. As I began the process I started feeling very melancholy. I remembered the times I would drive my mother around, you see when she moved in with me in 2012 this was the car we used. My 2007 Solara was not as comfortable as her car was, so hers became our main car. My mother wasn't into “things” so her buying this car was huge. This is not just a car, it is a mobile memory capsule. It's filled with vivid memories including when my brother, Tony, my mom and I drove to Philly to her last living brother's funeral. It happened to be in 2008 when Barack Obama won the election and we got caught up in the DC traffic. Mom and I traveled around laughing about stories of my childhood and her life in this car. The car is 17 years old so a decision would have to be made about what to do based on the diagnosis. I decided I would put on salsa music and celebrate whatever would be next for the car and I went down memory lane while taking stuff out. Yeah, I had a lot in my car. Music is great for shifting your mindset. You know when you hear a certain song you are transported to that time and sometimes it takes you back to when you first heard this song? I put in my Juan Luis Guerra's 440 cd (yes, I said cd) and began dancing and singing as I cleaned out the car. I really fell in love with salsa music after hearing his song, Quisiera, while I was out dancing. The song roughly translates to I would like to. I cleaned out car and moved from melancholy to gratitude thinking over the memories I shared with my family and friends in this car. I love how music can shift your state of mind so quickly. Next I wanted to have ease with the towing and the conversation about the car repairs. On Wednesday morning AAA came quickly to tow the car. Justin, the driver, asked a few questions and was courteous and professional and there was a picture of Tigger and Winnie the Pooh on the side of his tow truck. That totally made me laugh. The funny thing is I have miniature stuffed Pooh and Tigger hanging via carabiners on my rearview window. All I could do was smile and give thanks for the ease and grace with the pickup. Although one of the most successful artists and songwriters of the 60's, Marvin Gaye had not released a solo studio album for two years prior to In the Groove, his eighth studio album.  Instead he had been releasing duet performances with artists like Kim Weston and Tammi Terrell.  Gaye was one of the primary artists shaping what would become the Motown sound, first as a session player, then as a solo artist and songwriter.  Gaye formed a vocal quartet called The Marquees shortly after leaving the Air Force in the late 50's.  The Marquees performed in the D.C. area, connecting with Bo Diddley who co-wrote their first (and only) single, "Wyatt Earp."  The group disbanded in 1960, and Marvin Gaye relocated to Detroit, connected with Barry Gordy around Christmas of 1960, and signing with Tamla, a Motown subsidiary.  By 1962 Gaye was a success as a singer, session musician, and writer. In the Groove was released in August of 1968, and would see its third single, I Heard It Through the Grapevine released in October.  This single would become Gaye's first number 1 hit.  October would also bring tragedy, when his vocal duet partner Tammi Terrell collapsed from exhaustion into Gaye's arms, later being diagnosed with a brain tumor which would eventually claim her life.  After the monster international success of I Heard It Through the Grapevine, the entire album would be re-released under that title.  The album was both a critical and commercial success.John Lynch brings us this soulful selection. I Heard It Through the GrapevineAlthough one of Gaye's most successful songs, he was not the first artist to record or release the song.  It was intended to be released by Gladys Knight & the Pips, who did so in September 1967.  The Miracles also recorded the song and released it in 1968.  Gaye's version would become the classic rendition.YouThis was the first single from the album, released in December of 1967, months before the album.  The song was about a man wanting to keep his relationship with a woman secret, because she was upper class and he was working class.  It featured a rougher Gaye vocal part than was typical of his previous songs, and  went to number 34 on the pop charts.ChainedThe second single would be released in August 1968, the same month as the album release.  Frank Wilson wrote and produced this song which went to number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The lyrics are about a man pining for a woman he lost and wants back. Some Kind of WonderfulThis deeper cut was not released as a single.  The Drifters originally released this song in 1961, and it was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King.  Many artists would cover this one, including Carole King and most recently Michael Bublé.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Barbarella by The Bob Crewe Generation (from the motion picture “Barbarella”) Jane Fonda's cult classic of bad science fiction films would appear in the theaters in October 1968. STAFF PICKS:On the Road Again by Canned Heat Bruce starts the staff picks with a blues and harmonica jam off Canned Heat's second album “Boogie with Canned Heat.”  The group takes its name from a 1928 Tommy Johnson song entitled "Canned Heat Blues."  Canned Heat's lead vocalist was Bob "The Bear" Hite, but Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson takes the lead for this song.  Chewy Chewy by Ohio ExpressRob features a happy bubblegum pop number from Mansfield, Ohio.  Ohio Express consisted of session musicians who put out the music for Super K Productions.  The group had a previous hit in "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy."Sunshine Help Me by Spooky Tooth Wayne brings us an acid rock deep cut written by Gary Wright of “Dream Weaver” fame.  The song itself is about letting the sunshine clear the singer's mind.  Spooky Tooth was a blues/psychedelic band from England active between 1967 and 1974.  This song was not a hit, but did appear on their greatest hits album.Hey Jude by The BeatlesLynch's staff picks is  one of the Beatles' biggest hits, though it was not released on a studio album at the time. It is also the longest single in the Beatles' catalog, running 7:11, the longest single ever released at the time.  It was written by Paul McCartney for John and Cynthia Lennon's son Julian when John and Cynthia were going through a divorce.     NOVELTY TRACK:Mr. Tambourine Man by the William ShatnerSomehow Shatner was able to put this song in the hopper while simultaneously starring as Captain Kirk in the original run of the TV show, Star Trek.  We'll let you decide whether he missed his calling as a rock star.

Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Jesse Walker. Jesse is books editor at Reason and author of two books, The United States of Paranoia and Rebels On the Air. He can be found on Twitter at @notjessewalker.Jesse's Music Pick: Willie NelsonIn Part Two, we pick up Willie's story at his commercial breakthrough, Red Headed Stranger (1975). This opens a window in which Willie records frequent number one albums on the country charts and often dents the pop charts with his records, as well. What's changed? Well, Willie stops writing music for himself for an awfully long stretch. It's somewhat ironic that his biggest successes in this era will come from other people's songs after Willie's writing helped so many artists move product in the years prior.Near the height of “Outlaw Country,” Willie takes a sharp left turn by recording an album's worth of compositions from the Great American Songbook. Stardust becomes a huge hit and allows Willie to do what he wants. Specifically, that means a series of tribute albums and duet albums in the late '70s.The '80s would bring a string of crossover hits like "On the Road Again," "To All the Girls I Loved Before," "Pancho and Lefty," and "Seven Spanish Angels.” Always on My Mind was a HUGELY popular album at the time but signaled the end of a certain creative era for Willie. He writes again on Tougher Than Leather to mixed returns and the rest of the decade would see occasional hits among a plethora of releases. The 1990s kick off with Willie's tax trouble and a pretty great release meant to raise money to pay back the government. We dive into Who'll Buy My Memories and other highlights from an interesting decade of music, with Across the Borderline, Moonlight Becomes You, Spirit, and Teatro (with Daniel Lanois producing) among his best work.Willie has continued his firehose release schedule to this day, with a new album on the shelves just a couple months ago. We skim through the latter portion of his career, stopping to shine a light on a few of the more worthwhile albums.Over two parts and more than six hours, we hope to give both die-hard Willie fans and those new to the artist an overview of what made him so great.
