With colder temperatures arriving, homeowners may soon find themselves playing reluctant hosts to unwelcome guests like mice and squirrels. Marcus Mueller, owner of Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control, shares insight into why rodents become more active as winter approaches. “As soon as temperatures start to drop below freezing at night, we see a rise in rodent activity,” he explains. “They're looking for warmth and shelter, just as we are.” During the winter season, many animals seek food and protection from the elements. Mueller notes that homes offer everything they need. "Our homes provide shelter, warmth, and sometimes even food—exactly what they're looking for,” he says. He explains that while homes aren't designed to attract wildlife, their structure often unintentionally does. Attics, for example, can mimic a tree cavity, making them ideal for critters like squirrels. For homeowners, identifying early signs of rodent activity can help avoid larger issues. “Scratching sounds in walls, chewed wiring, or visible droppings are often the first signs,” Mueller says. In extreme cases, even noticeable odors can indicate an infestation. Recently, I have been listening to the audiobook version of Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life by C.S. Lewis. I like to listen to audio books and podcasts as I do my gardening work. This book is a memoir or autobiography of C.S. Lewis' early life. If you want to get to know someone, explore their early life and come to understand what has shaped them. He writes this. I am a product of long corridors, empty sunlit rooms, upstairs indoor silences, attics explored in solitude, distant noises of gurgling cisterns and pipes, and the noise of wind under the tiles. Also, of endless books. C.S. Lewis. Two sentences. One long and one short takes us to those elements that, when multiplied together, have produced a C.S. Lewis. We could put it this way. Long corridors x empty sunlit rooms x upstairs indoor silences x attics explored in solitude x distant noises of gurgling cisterns and pipes x and the noise of wind under the tiles. x endless books = C.S. Lewis Of course, there are many other influences or factors that have gone into the shaping or the product. In the book, he talks about his parents, being an atheist, life in the trenches of World War One, relationships and many other things. But what is interesting to me is that he sums up himself as a product of the environs he found himself in. These are places where we can go to ourselves. We know what a long corridor looks like. Empty sunlit rooms have a certain feel to them. Attics, those places you go with a torch and have to brush away cobwebs, have a sense of adventure and hiddenness. For some, the thought of ‘endless books' might be overwhelming and even repulsive, but for someone like C.S. Lewis it would have been like sitting down to a banquet. From all these factors being multiplied, we have probably the deepest and most profound theological writing of the 20th century. We have the beauty of Narnia and the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The depth of Mere Christianity and wit of Screwtape Letters. You are the product of If you were to write a paragraph containing 36 words that described the factors that have shaped you, what would you write? The mind has a negative bias. It can so easily drift to the traumas, the hurts, and disappointments. C.S. Lewis had plenty of those. Instead, look to the environments that you inhabited. Where you immersed your time and felt most comfortable in. You may find hints in the environments that your parents embraced or took you to. I am a product of I was rummaging through some old photos the other day and I came across this photo taken of me in my early twenties. I am sitting on a hill, which was above my family home, on our farm just outside of Wellsford. It's a summer's day. I have my guitar, and I am looking out over the countryside and sheep are in the background. I can't remember what I was playing. Probably something from John Denver! – Country roads, take me home … But in this one image, I think I capture many of the environmental factors that shaped me. I am a product of the outdoors, warm summer breezes, musical notes, solitude and silence. Soil, sheep, pastoral care and animal husbandry. The small things inhabiting the large and conversations with earthy depth.  Not as eloquent as C.S. Lewis, but you get the idea. Why is this important? We often come to times when we ask the deeper questions. Places of decision where we question our purpose. In these times, it's healthy to reflect on the environments that have shaped the deeper parts of you. Are there patterns and places where you most feel ‘at home' in? What are the environments that have gone into shaping the ‘product' you are? How do these reflections inform the choices you are about to make?   Questions?  Comments? Email me

It's not often a person gets to experience euphoria. For years I imagined alcohol could do the job if I could just find the right brand but eventually I gave up on that. Sometimes in church I've felt it. When I was 11 I got to go to the top of the Empire State Building. I sang the Dead's “Attics of My Life” once with two women and got a little high from it. And one night before the Philharmonic I experienced it at the Bowery Ballroom on Delancey Street listening to Aoife O'Donovan and Hawktail and the phenom fiddler Brittany Haas and it made the big crowd go wild to see artists overcome gravity and simply float.Aoife and Messiaen, two transcendent tours on successive nights: it makes living in Manhattan worth the trouble and expense. You can eat expensive mediocre food in loud restaurants, almost get run over by e-scooters, deal with surly salesclerks, cabs stuck in dense traffic, extortionate rents, impenetrable bureaucracy, but the museums and trains and tulips in spring and the occasional transcendental experiences make up for it. This week on Flightless Bird, David Farrier realizes that New Zealand doesn't have attics or basements, so sets out to discover why so many of America's 333 million homes do. David talks to Stephen Fox, an architectural historian and a lecturer at the Rice School of Architecture in Houston, who explains the practical reasons for these spaces, as well as why they've turned into habitable spaces. David then talks to filmmaker and architect Giorgio Angelini about what these spaces mean culturally to Americans, as paradoxically a place of safety and warmth but also of mystery and horror. The two of them discuss various formative experiences to be found in the attic, before David turns back to the egg episode, attempting to get closure with his best friend Rosabel following an incident where he cracked an egg over her head.

Rachel Hurdley climbs up into the attic to discover the hidden meanings behind this shadowy and mysterious part of the home. The attic can be a strange part of the house – somewhere which is rarely visited and often forgotten. But it can also be a place to preserve precious memories, a refuge, or even somewhere a bit sinister. Rachel reveals the many uses to which attics have been put over the centuries and what this tells us about our history and changes in society. Attics are a relatively recent development and Rachel starts at the 16th-century King's House within the walls of the Tower of London. The building has some of the earliest attics in the country and she finds out about the social changes which led to this innovation in domestic architecture. But it wasn't long before people realised that, as well as being handy for storage, attics could be the perfect hiding place. At Harvington Hall, Rachel uncovers the role that the Hall's attics played in the religious turmoil of Elizabethan England. As well as being used for storage or living, attics have often provided working space. Rachel travels to Newtown in mid-Wales to see the attics of an unusual early factory and hears about the arduous working lives of the weavers who toiled there. The 19th century saw something of a heyday for the attic. The Victorians were all too aware of social class and this meant that servants (and sometimes children) could be banished to attic bedrooms and nurseries. But this was also the height of the Industrial Revolution, with factories mass producing all manner of goods. People suddenly had far more ‘stuff' – and of course they needed somewhere to put it all. At Scotney Castle in Kent, Rachel explores the attics of a grand country house whose owners spent more than a hundred years cramming them with thousands of objects. And what of the attic today? In an age of smaller houses, loft conversions and flats, how do we cope without an attic? Rachel enters the world of self-storage where you can store as much as you like for as long as you like. As she picks through the attic's contents, Rachel also considers how writers have used attics as a sometimes sinister setting for their characters, and the psychology of what we choose to keep in our attics. We've all heard the stories…people discovering that a stranger has been secretly living in their house, known as “phrogging” The term phrogging — pronounced “frogging” —is thought to have originated from the metaphorical idea of people or “phrogs” leaping from home to home. The typical phrogger is someone with nowhere else to live. They thrive on staying hidden and are most likely to be hidden in rarely visited parts of the home like the attic, basement, or crawl spaces. And it's an odd phenomenon that is explored in the upcoming Lifetime series, “Phrogging: Hider in My House”…and we talked to producer Jessica Everleth this morning about this terrifying subject!

Welcome to episode 125 of Activist #MMT. Today's the first in a six-part series with Texas Christian University (TCU) economics professor and Cowboy Economist, John Harvey. The first three parts are hosted by me, the final three by MMT researcher, Texas lawyer, and my previous guest, Johnathan Wilson. Jonathan and John talk about how MMT can apply to nations outside the US, using Russia as an example, and also some of the core theoretical and ideological differences between MMTers and mainstream economists, focusing on a recent critique of MMT by Drumetz and Pfeister. Regarding parts one to three, John and I talk about his chapter in the upcoming book called Modern Monetary Theory: Key Insights, Leading Thinkers. The book will be published by the UK-based Gower Institute for Modern Money Studies, or GIMMS; it's edited by L. Randall Wray and GIMMS; and is scheduled for January 2023 release. John is one of 15 authors. John's chapter is called "Modern Monetary Theory, the UK, and pound sterling". He was asked to write the chapter for two major reasons: First because there is not enough MMT-specific analysis on exchange rate determination, and second, to address the reality of the so-called sterling crisis in the United Kingdom. John and I don't specifically discuss the latter topic, but it is addressed in the paper. It addresses the following criticism of MMT (this is a quote from the chapter): "MMT-inspired policies will cause high rates of price inflation which will, in turn, lower the international value of a domestic currency – perhaps catastrophically." Importantly, the critique is based on the following three assumptions: The false idea that we are already, or soon will be, at full employment A fantastical theory of exchange rate determination A terrible and lazy mischaracterization of MMT John and I spend most of our time discussing the reality of these three assumptions. Surprisingly, however, the main insight I take from this conversation is a much clearer understanding of inflation in general. I'm going to describe that insight in the introduction to part two. The heart of our conversation is on the above three assumptions, but we start and end with mostly unrelated subjects. Part one begins with John describing his experience as chair of the economics department at TCU, he discusses the Russian-Ukrainian conflict only as it relates to exchange rate determination, and he also answers a question from an Activist #MMT patron, regarding his opinion of our possibility of experiencing a recession. At the end of part three, we talk about how, for most of those that most of us directly interact with, mainstream economic theory is not, in fact, a big conspiracy. We end by discussing the good and bad of math in economics.
