Hey everyone, it's time for another episode of Walkin' on the Wild Side Podcast!  For this episode, we're ringing in Spring with the bells, the OCONEE BELLS (Shortia galacifolia)!  Spring has sprung, as you learned from our last episode.  However, it wouldn't be spring without the Oconee Bells!  This beautiful but small wildflower is one of the earliest blooming spring ephemerals in the Appalachians, is quite rare but locally abundant, and has a very interesting discovery story.  It was actually discovered, lost, and re-discovered a CENTURY later, but not by a famous naturalist of the day.  Join Marvin and Gabrielle Bouknight on the back porch "studio" and learn more about this beautiful "corolla of the Carolinas", where it can be seen, and why it was discovered... twice! Here are a couple of websites for more information:https://scnps.org/the-oconee-bells-history-homage-hobby-legacy/https://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2021/04/18/great-smoky-mountains-national-park-wildflowers-types-oconee-bells/7228734002/https://saveplants.org/plant-profile/?CPCNum=3950https://southcarolinaparks.com/devils-fork/trailshttps://visitoconeesc.com/foj-bellfest/Interested in having Marvin and Gabrielle speak at your event?  Email us below for more information!Email us at www.walkingonthewildside21@gmail.comFollow us on our two webpages to see photos and blogs about our podcasts and nature in general:Nature Nook PhotographyWalkin' on the Wild SideYou can listen directly from our website at: https://walkinonthewildside.buzzsprout.com, or from any of the major podcast platforms, such as Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Audible, Spotify, iHeart Radio, TuneIn, Stitcher, and more!Subscribe to our podcasts on any of these platforms and leave us a review! We hope you enjoy listening to our podcast and welcome your emails, comments, and feedback.  Hopefully, we will inspire you to get out there and start "Walkin' on the Wild Side"!We'd love to hear from you with your questions and comments!

Frank MeyerTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Frank Meyer. Frank has been a staple in the film, television & punk scene for the past 30+ years. In this episode, we chat about his growing up with some of the most supportive parents of their era. Frank's folks not only supported his hopes and dreams, but they also even took him to see some of the most iconic acts of all time. Frank recounts stories of seeing The Blues Brothers live, and even Eddie Murphy's Raw & Delirious shows. Then we get into some of Frank's work in television & film. Having spent several years with the G4 channel, Frank was an early podcaster with a very cool insight into the format. We bounce all over the place in this one. Frank shares stories of his antics with some of music's greats; like Cherie Currie, David Lee Roth, Dave Mustane, Van Halen, and Eddie Spaghetti. I get him to explain why he wrote books about Phil Spector, The Ramones, and even his series From Dude To Dad. Frank not only has his own bands: Frank Meyer & The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs here in the US, but also Trading Aces in Europe! Plus, he plays with FEAR, Cherie Currie, Range War, and Handsome Dick Manitoba's The Dictators. Fun stories involving The Stooges, and being a good hang. Frank even made documentaries about his buddy Hell Razah, and another one about Hip Hop 101. Check those out everywhere documentaries are available! Finally, we discuss Frank's debut solo album Living Between The Lines. I wouldn't be me if I didn't ask to play my favorite track from the album (Blue Radio)! Wu Tang Clan, Drew Barrymore, Eddie Spaghetti, and Keel stories abound!!

Suzanne describes herself as an extroverted introvert. From a young age she never felt like she fit in and after a series of great and not so great experiences was diagnosed HIV positive. Her life after this was like a blank page and she realized everything within her had to change. This led her to finding what she was passionate about namely nature, spirituality and human behaviors. Suzanne realized that she could help alleviate that feeling in others especially women in similar situations and began working within homeless/addiction services. It was only after a diagnosis of autism that a lot of things clicked within herself. She has spent two years letting go of guilt and shame and is learning to be her authentic self. Episode 2234: Walter Mosley on Easy Rawlins, King Oliver and the history of fictional black American detectives

The acclaimed American writer Walter Mosley has a new King Oliver book out: Been Wrong So Long It Feels Like Right, a novel that follows Oliver's search for both a missing woman and his estranged father who was released from prison nine years ago. But before getting to his latest mystery, I couldn't resist asking Mosley to compare his most famous fictional character, Easy Rawlins, with King Oliver. Mosley explains how Oliver, a contemporary detective in New York, faces different, perhaps less racialized challenges than Rawlins did in 1940s Los Angeles. We then moved onto to Mosley's observations about crime and punishment in white and black America as well as the importance of jazz music in his writing. Here are the five KEEN ON takeaways from this conversation with Walter Mosley:* The difference between his two detective characters reflects changing times in America: Easy Rawlins operates in a strictly black-and-white 1940s Los Angeles where his race defines everything, while Joe King Oliver works in contemporary New York where racial boundaries are more fluid, even if racism still exists.* Mosley's writing process is remarkably disciplined and productive (or so he says) - he writes three hours every day without fail, enabling him to complete two to three books annually while also working on television and film projects.* The character Joe King Oliver was named after the famous jazz musician - this reflects both the musical qualities Mosley sees in writing and the character's connection to his fictional missing father, who named him after the jazz great who mentored Louis Armstrong.* Been Wrong So Long It Feels Like Right interweaves two plots: a case involving a runaway wife and a personal quest to find Oliver's estranged father who was secretly released from prison nine years ago, exploring themes of family reconciliation.* Growing up as an only child with a Jewish mother and African-American father influenced Mosley's perspective on American identity - though he sees such multicultural backgrounds as common to many Americans' experiences rather than unique to his situation.Walter Mosley is one of America's most celebrated and beloved writers. His books have won numerous awards and have been translated into more than twenty languages. Mosley is the author of the acclaimed Easy Rawlins series of mysteries, including national bestsellers Cinnamon Kiss, Little Scarlet, and Bad Boy Brawly Brown; the Fearless Jones series, including Fearless Jones, Fear Itself, and Fear of the Dark; the novels Blue Light and RL's Dream; and two collections of stories featuring Socrates Fortlow, Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned, for which he received the Anisfield-Wolf Award, and Walkin' the Dog. He lives in New York City.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting the daily KEEN ON show, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy interview series. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.Keen On is a reader-supported publication. Family and Food: A lifetime of family meals together eventually led Eli Sussman, '07, back to his first love of cooking

MSU Today with Russ White

Eli Sussman grew up in the Detroit suburb of Huntington Woods. After graduating from Berkley High School, MSU's James Madison College felt like a natural next step.  “One of the great things about James Madison is that the classes are small, and the conversation is lively,” says Sussman. “I thrived in that atmosphere.”  Perhaps that's because lively conversation has always been part of his life. Family was important in the Sussman house, and eating dinner together was a central component in the lives of his large circle.   Sussman says it was a long journey from an interest in politics to an interest in food. He always had cooking jobs to make money and worked at Lou and Harry's in East Lansing as a line cook. “I loved it,” he says. “It was so fun because there was great comradery. It was a hard job, but it spoke to me. The fire was lit at Lou and Harry's.”  After graduation and a study abroad experience at a music management and public relations firm in London, Sussman put this burgeoning interest in cooking aside and moved to Los Angeles to work in the music industry for five years.   “I was enjoying cooking on the weekends more than I was enjoying the weekdays at my desk,” he says. “At the time, the music business was transitioning away from CDs to digital downloads, and my brother, who was a chef in New York City, said to me ‘just come here and try it. You can always return to the music industry if you decide you don't like cooking.'  “I started back at the beginning and became a prep line cook. I knew instantaneously that I had made the right decision and that I would never return to the music industry.”  Sussman's latest project is a neighborhood bistro in Prospect Heights Brooklyn called Gertrude's that features Jewish and French influences. Eli's 7-layer kosher chocolate cake, inspired by the Jewish bakeries around Metro Detroit that he loved growing up, took on “a life of its own.” It was selected as one of The New York Times Top 8 Dishes of 2023 by food critic Pete Wells. “It's a nice way to tie my Michigan roots to a New York restaurant.”  In addition to going viral with his chocolate cake, Sussman now hosts the popular “Talkinin the WalkIn,” a video series in which Sussman interviews chefs in a restaurant's walk-in fridge.  “The optimal place in the restaurant where people go to hide or get away is the walk-in,” he says. “This is where the meat and potatoes of your thinking happens. The setting tends to lead to compelling conversations.”  Sussman encourages today's students to “be open to the idea that maybe the first thing you've chosen doesn't have to be the be-all end-all. You have many opportunities to reinvent yourself and start over. Focus on what excites you now. And if you don't know what that is yet, that's OK.”   Soon,Sussman will have a presence in Michigan in the form of Italian-American cuisine. Alo's, a joint venture with his brother, is slated for 2025 opening in Ann Arbor.    “Even though I haven't lived in Michigan since I was 18, I am a major advocate for Michigan; it's a huge part of my identity,” he says. “People sleep on how wonderful Michigan is as a produce state—we have incredible farms. My brother and I are really excited about using our restaurant to showcase that Michigan produce is the best in America.”   Conversation Highlights: (0:43) – Eli on growing up in suburban Detroit and why he chose MSU for college. (2:31) – Describe your journey from politics to the music industry to the culinary world. And how did your study abroad experience play into the process? (9:01) – How and when do you dive into the food world in New York City? (13:03) – How did your MSU and James Madison College experience impact you? (18:39) – How would you describe the fare you enjoy cooking for people to enjoy at Gertrude's? (21:18) – What is Talkin in the Walkin, and how did it come about? Why is cooking like being in college? (25:35) – Why do you enjoy “punching up” at the Michelin culture that exists in parts of the hospitality industry? (28:07) – What's your advice for students today regardless of what they want to do? What two major mistakes do you feel you made? (30:48) – What motivates you and gets you up and going every day? (32:44) – Tell us about your plans to open a restaurant in Ann Arbor. Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your shows.
