Rita and Zane had a heck lot of fun from last weekend's Jianbing Battle food festival. Organized by Beijing's celebrated brewer Peiping Machine Taphouse, the street food festival drew thousands of foodies to try out a variety of Jianbing, the Chinese take of pancakes. Also presented are local coffee baristas, wineries and Japanese sake bars, and of course, good DJ and music. We were still in food coma as we got into the car and recorded this episode of Soft Spot!

Charles Zeng could be the burger mayor of Shanghai. He currently owns five Charlie’s Burger restaurants in the city and consistently serves up some of the most legit burgers, shakes, and now gourmet Jianbing — an early morning local favourite. Originally from NY, Charles got hooked on the vibrancy and energy of Shanghai. Like many, he thought that opening his own restaurant should be easy enough, and opened Piro nearly seven years ago. In today’s podcast, we discuss Charles’ journey and his tips on navigating the F&B scene in China. We also get to talking about some of his wackier creations, like gourmet dog treats (which he swears are delicious) and truffle Jianbing. All of that and more in today's podcast! Brian Goldberg a NY native who has at various times in his life been an Olympic qualifying luger, an investment banker and a CNBC TV reporter, moved to China with a masters in East Asian studies and became infatuated with the jianbing, a northern Chinese street crepe. His obsession led him to open his first jianbing shop in Hong Kong called Mr. Bing in 2012 and a second in 2013. After moving back to NYC, he now has 3 locations of Mr. Bing with a fourth on the way. Today, we'll be diving deep into Brian's entrepreneurial drive, the pitfalls and obstacles to launching a QSR in the competitive NYC climate, the history of the jianbing and I'll also be picking his brain on how to build and grow a successful restaurant group team at the cook and executive level.
