Welcome to episode 49 of the Pod Punk Podcast where this time I am joined by the founding member of 88 Fingers Louie and Rise Against, it's Joe Principe! Joe joins me to chat about both Rise Against and 88 Fingers Louie, Rise Against's new Album Nowhere Generation, being back out on tour, his gateway into punk rock, experiences on tour, his early bands and loads more. This episode is another huge one for me personally as Rise Against are one of the biggest influences on me as a person and musically so this was a massive honour! Be sure to get tickets to see them on tour all over the UK this November!
On today's episode, I talk to musician Tim McIlrath of Rise Against. Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, Tim grew up about an hour outside Chicago in the suburbs where he started playing in punk bands. In 1999, Joe Principe and Dan Wieklinski formed Rise Against out of the break-up of their former band 88 Fingers Louie, and invited Tim to join. Though the early days were tumultuous, they persevered and released the Transistor Revolt EP a year later. And since those early days, the band has risen to international acclaim releasing albums on Fat Wreck Chords, Geffen, DGC/Interscope and their most current album, the Nowhere Generation II EP was just released on Loma Vista in June! Joe Principe from Rise Against talks to iHeartRadio's Jesse and JD about returning to tour Canada, IDLES Remixing their music, and the legends of Punk Rock that the guys grew up idolizing, who have now become tour-mates! Joe talks specifically about his influence and love of KISS, their theatrics and almost cartoon-like stage presence. Joe of Rise Against and the guys memorialize the late, great Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters, and how amazing of a man he was. Joe Principe tells Jesse and JD about how politically motivated some of Rise Against's music is - both on the surface, and as you dig deeper in its subtleties! Joe Principe of Rise Against speaks locally about Chicago looking in the mirror about its lack of support for its music scene, and ultimately declaring a RISE AGAINST Day!

Guest Host Week kicks off with host Dr. Daryl Wilson (The Bollweevils), a frequent guest, friend and exceptional dude. His guest is bassist Joe Principe of Rise Against, one of the most significant bands to ever call Chicago home (I'm listening to "Appeal to Reason" as I'm typing this, in fact). Daryl and Joe have lots of shared history... close to 30 years' worth, and they talk about everything. Near-death experiences, first tattoos, punk rock friends, coming up in the Chicago scene and whether we'll be hearing new Rise Against music soon. Car Con Carne is sponsored by C&H Financial Services!

88 Fingers Louie is an American band from Chicago which was formed in 1993. They played a style of hardcore punk, melodic hardcore, and punk rock. After disbanding in 1999, guitarist Dan Wleklinski and bassist Joe Principe formed the well-known punk rock band Rise Against. The band reunited in 2009 and has continued playing shows in Chicago, Canada, Belgium, Las Vegas, and Asbury Park. The band held a 20th-anniversary show in 2013. The name comes from a Flintstones gangster who sells dodgy pianos. Fun fact, Denis is a fan of the podcast. Well, I mean he said he liked a few episodes so I’m going to take that as he has the logo tattooed on his chest now. I asked him if he’d like to talk about the days of 88 and how cool Chicago is and he said The Ballet Where did the video for "I’ve Won" go? Joe Principe was a Correctional Officer at the Supermax ADX in Colorado. The prison that took the place as the highest security prison in the nation from USP Marion. He became involved with the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang. This is the sad story of a corrupt cop who ended in disaster for himself and everybody associated with him. He crossed the line and paid a heavy price. The Aryan Brotherhood is the most violent prison gang in the federal system. They are responsible for 25% of murders but make up only 0.01% of the population in federal prison. They killed two officers at USP Marion in a single day.
Dynasty Podcasts Chicagoverse 153 - Rise Against http://dynastypodcasts.com https://soundcloud.com/dynastypodcasts The day before the release of their eighth studio album, Wolves, Tim McIlrath and Joe Principe of Rise Against return to Dynasty Podcasts! Recorded in a hotel room at Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, the Chicago natives Take some time for reflection, before kicking off a summer tour with Deftones a day later. McIlrath and Principe look back at their process during the band’s Fat Wreck Chords era, and compare their writing and recording approach then to the present day model. The pair also speak on whether it’s fair to label Wolves as a straightforward response to the presidency of Donald Trump, and reveal the fan interactions that left a lasting impression over the course of Rise Against’s history. Rise Against's Joe Principe sits shotgun for a trip to Chicago suburb Downers Grove. We visit Dan's Pizza, an awesome mom & pop carry-out pizza place tucked into a nondescript strip mall. Over "party cut" pizza and Sprite, Joe talks about the music that had a big impact on him when he was growing up, Rise Against's ascent, veganism, the awkward things fans see him buying at Target and the surprising story about how he came to play the bass guitar for the first time.
For this episode, James is joined by 88 Fingers Louie's lead singer Denis Buckley. They meet up at Taqueria El Tapatio on the west side of Chicago, which leads to discussions like: "There is grease just rolling down my hand," and "I feel kinda disgusting now." (For the record, the food was tasty.) They talk about 88FL's history (breaking up, drinking, touring) how it felt to watch former member Joe Principe hit massive heights with Rise Against, and the simple pleasures of Mexican food. And James may have uttered the all-time greatest "cranky old man" lines in CCC history: "One of my great problems with concerts is other people are there."
