It's happening with increasing frequency…we're doom-scrolling, and we see the message…we wake up to read the news…we get a text from a friend…or we turn on the radio and hear what happened…another rock star has died… This always comes as a shock…it's mitigated somewhat if the rock star in question is older or has known health or substance issues…but when it's someone young or seemingly healthy, it's extra hard to deal with. This was the situation on the morning of Saturday, March 26th, 2022…Foo Fighters fans awoke to the news that Taylor Hawkins, the band's beloved drummer and Dave Grohl's best friend in the whole wide world, had died. This didn't make any sense…the guy had the greatest job in the world…he loved what he was doing…he had Dave and the highly protective Foo Fighters' organization to look after him…he was physically active…he had a loving family…he had supportive friends throughout the music industry and beyond…and any drug problems he had were at least two decades behind him. Taylor's death was completely unexpected and a complete shock to the entire music world…it was one of the most high-profile rock star deaths of the 21st century…but strangely, there are gaps in what the public knows about what happened…and when there are gaps, conspiracies abound. This is episode 37 of “Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry”…this is everything we know about the death of Taylor Hawkins…and it is quite the story Learn more about your ad choices. Ever wondered how our favorite music videos and movies from the past still influence us today? Join us as we journey through some iconic pop culture moments, like Yellowcard's unforgettable MTV tribute to "The Breakfast Club" and Charlie Sheen's legendary cameo in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." We reflect on the emotional power of the Foo Fighters' performance with Taylor Hawkins' son, and even entertain the idea of rocking a "November Rain" inspired wedding dress. Of course, we also couldn't help but feel a bit of concert FOMO over missing Adele in Munich. Our tales don't stop with music and movies. We share our recent travels, contrasting visits to historic sites and the introspection they inspire, with lighter stories about tattoos and redemption. Discover the significance of places like the Badlands and the Black Hills, and hear about a unique tattoo parlor owned by a former felon now supporting others on their paths to better lives. Amidst these reflections, we sprinkle in some lighthearted banter about movies, celebrity culture, and even the intriguing possibilities of alien existence with special guest Shane Hawkins, who brings his infectious energy and drumming prowess to the episode. We're also exploring cultural contrasts, like the charmingly slow-paced hospitality found in German beer gardens and how it contrasts with the hustle and bustle of American service. Get a peek into the world of sports fandom, as we reminisce about soccer matches at Soldier Field and marvel at the sheer size of American college stadiums compared to their European counterparts. From extreme cave diving stories to curious political discussions, our conversation meanders through the quirky, the profound, and the just plain fun—proving that sometimes the best journeys are the unexpected ones.

We have a very special twofer for you this week! We kick it off with the birthday boy himself, the great Ian Hunter! Ian turned 85 this week (!) and is still at it and as good as ever. He just released a new album called Defiance 2: Fiction (Defiance 1 came out last year) and both are star-studded affairs featuring Joe Elliott, Brian May, Slash, Todd Rundgren and tons more including the late great Taylor Hawkins and Jeff Beck. Ian and I discuss making music at this age, going glam with Bowie, his (underappreciated) solo career and more. Then we hear from John Butler, frontman for the wonderful Diesel Park West. They released one of the greatest debuts ever in 1989 with Shakespeare Alabama, and have continued to put out quality music, but remain one of those acts that deserved more. They also have a new album called Presley Trap that is among their best. You'll love what you hear! www.ianhunter.com www.dieselparkwest.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
Every now and again I pinch myself when doing this show. It's been four years and I've had some amazing guests. Yet this one—with all due respect to everyone who's been on—this one has been more than 30 years in the making. Because my guest is Ian Hunter, hands down my favorite singer-songwriter of ‘em all. Ian is best known for his time fronting the early to mid-70s band English band Mott the Hoople. Mott had a major hit in 1972 with All the Young Dudes—look it up on Spotify, trust me you've heard it. From there Ian's solo career has dotted nearly six decades, and he's still going strong. Ian joined me to discuss his latest album Defiance Part II: Fiction. The album follows Defiance Part I, both of which were recorded near the end of the pandemic. The songs are fantastic, but check out the roster of musicians who joined him: Ringo Starr, Brian May, Lucinda Williams, Jeff Tweedy, the late Taylor Hawkins, and so many more. We talk about the album, the pandemic, the staying power of music, and, well, the theme of both Defiance records—agism and not going quietly into the night. What else could you want? Dive into this interview with Ian Hunter.

The Foo Fighters are an American rock band formed in 1994 by Dave Grohl, the former drummer of Nirvana. After the death of Nirvana's frontman Kurt Cobain, Grohl shifted to the role of lead vocalist and guitarist, founding the Foo Fighters as a one-man project initially. The name "Foo Fighters" refers to unidentified aerial phenomena reported by Allied aircraft pilots during World War II. The band's debut album, self-titled "Foo Fighters," was released in 1995 and featured Grohl playing most of the instruments. As the band expanded, it solidified into a full-fledged group, with members such as Nate Mendel (bass), Taylor Hawkins (drums), Chris Shiflett (guitar), and Pat Smear (guitar). The Foo Fighters achieved widespread success with subsequent albums like "The Colour and the Shape" (1997), "There Is Nothing Left to Lose" (1999), and "One by One" (2002). Known for their energetic live performances and a sound blending alternative, grunge, and post-grunge elements, the Foo Fighters have garnered numerous awards, including multiple Grammy Awards. Over the years, they've released several hit singles, such as "Everlong," "My Hero," "Learn to Fly," and "The Pretender." The band has maintained its popularity and musical relevance, consistently delivering albums that showcase their versatility and staying power in the rock music scene.
Remember that time we dusted off our acid-wash jeans and teased our hair to the heavens? Mark Smith and Luke Colicchio from the Music Relish Show join me to rewind to 1984, an epic year that stamped its mark on our cultural identity. Together, we crack open the time capsule, laughing and sharing the quirks and soundtracks of our youth. We're cranking up the volume on a year that introduced us to Van Halen's synths and the drum beats that echoed in The Pretenders' halls. The albums that dropped in '84 weren't just music; they were the narratives of our lives, from Simple Minds to R.E.M., and every unexpected earworm in between. Alongside Mark and Lou, we dissect the hits and the deep cuts, offering up a buffet of anecdotes and insights that celebrate the vinyls and cassettes which defined an era. Strap on your nostalgia goggles as we regale you with tales of concerts missed and mosh pits conquered. From the electrifying charge of live acts like U2 to the warm nostalgia of a John Lennon tune, we traverse a soundscape that's varied. This episode isn't just a trip down memory lane—it's a testament to the timeless bonds we forge through music, shared across the airwaves to your eager ears. Join us for a chat that's as much about where we've been as it is about where those tunes have taken us.

Strap in for a nostalgic journey with us, your host Scott McLean and co-host's Mark Smith and Lou Collichio, as we revisit this vibrant era. We'll not only explore landmark events and releases like John Lennon's deportation case and the premiere of "The Wiz", but also share our personal experiences and memories from this unforgettable year in music. From the Bossa Nova tones we fell in love with, to the controversial breakup of The Beatles, we've got it all covered. We open up about the tremendous impact of the 17th Annual Grammy Awards and share our impressions of Olivia Newton-John and Bob Dylan. We also navigate through a whirlwind of events that rocked the music industry from April to August 1975, including the tragic death of Pete Ham, the Rolling Stones' North American tour, and Stevie Wonder's spellbinding performance at the Washington Monument. As we round off our time-travelling escapade, we reminisce about the birth of punk music with the Sex Pistols' first concert, the formation of Iron Maiden, and our personal favorite films from 1975 like "Trilogy of Terror" and "Jaws." To top it all off, we dive into the top songs and albums of 1975, including "Fly, Robin, Fly" by Silver Convention and "That's the Way (I Like It)" by KC and the Sunshine Band. So, join us as we relive 1975—a year that left an indelible stamp on the world of music!
