On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watched Hostile Waters, a 1997 made-for-TV movie directed by David Drury and starring Rutger Hauer, Martin Sheen and Max von Sydow. Hostile Waters — based on a real-life incident, the loss of the Soviet Navy's K-219 — was a joint production of HBO and the BBC, released first in the United Kingdom and then the United States. It received good reviews from critics on both sides of the Atlantic. Hostile Waters takes place on October 1986, off the east coast of the United States. A Soviet ballistic missile submarine, the K‑219, collides with the American hunter-killer submarine USS Aurora. The impact ruptures a missile tube aboard the Soviet boat, triggering seawater to seep in—causing a violent chemical reaction, toxic gas buildup, and a fire that threatens the entire submarine and its nuclear warheads. You can find Hostile Waters to stream for free on YouTube, or you could rent it on Amazon Prime or Apple TV.In their next episode, Jamelle and John will watch the 1997 legal thriller Red Corner, directed by Jon Avnet and starring Richard Gere. Here is a brief plot synopsis:An American attorney on business in China, ends up wrongfully on trial for murder and his only key to innocence is a female defense lawyer from the country. And don't forget our Patreon! In our latest episode, we watched the 1983 film Danton, a dramatization of one of the most turbulent moments in the French Revolution. You can sign up for our Patreon at patreon.com/unclearpod.
On the Saturday July 12, 2025 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we'll meet Paul Sun-Hyung Lee. You know the Canadian Screen Award winner as family patriarch Appa on “Kim's Convenience,” and as Inspector Albert Choi, the new head of Station House No 4, on “Murdoch Mysteries” and as Captain Carson Teva on the Star War series “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett” and “Ahsoka.” We'll also meet a guest who began his career as a child actor, appearing in everything from “Back tio the Future II” to Internal Affairs opposite Richard Gere. He became an international star after playing Frodo Baggins in the acclaimed “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. He's Elijah Wood, and his extensive filmography now includes “Bookworm,” an intriguing film about a 12-year-old named Mildred whose life is turned upside down when her mother lands in hospital and estranged, American magician father, Strawn Wise, played by Elijah Wood, comes to look after her. Hoping to entertain the bookish tween, Strawn takes Mildred camping in the notoriously rugged New Zealand wilderness, and the pair embark on the ultimate test of family bonding — a quest to find the mythological beast known as the Canterbury Panther. Then, we spend time with Gabrielle Drolet, a journalist, essayist, and cartoonist based in Montreal. She regularly contributes cartoons to The New Yorker and the Globe and Mail and is the first woman to receive a National Newspaper Award nomination for Editorial Cartooning. In 2020, she developed a condition that made her unable to use her hands. It only worsened over time, and as a writer and artist, she had to learn new ways of creating and expressing herself. She placed her first cartoon in The New Yorker—and then was unable to draw for a full year. She has since found ways around this using graphic design software, exercises, and many, many breaks, but the experience has completely changed her life. She writes about her experiences in her new book, “Look Ma, No Hands: A Chronic Pain Memoir,” an often funny but profound book on chronic pain, accessibility, and young adulthood.

(Airdate: 7.10.25) Lulu Simon, daughter of Paul Simon, is dragging Richard Gere for selling her childhood home to developers after allegedly promising to “take care of the land.” She's mad. Like “hope my dead pets haunt you” mad. Gere hasn't responded—but we're guessing he's keeping the lights on at night. Then, it's Tom Brady and Sofia Vergara, who may be heating up Ibiza with what insiders are calling a “summer romance.” It started on a superyacht, and yes, Tom asked to sit next to her. Smooth, TB12. Real smooth. And finally, Hugh Grant fell asleep in the Royal Box at Wimbledon—right behind Queen Camilla. We love a British nap, but Hugh… what the hell were you thinking? In Part 1 of a two-part conversation, Jon reflects on growing up in a show biz family and learning acting the hard way. Plus what it's like playing the romantic lead opposite two of the most famous actresses of our time: Demi Moore and Molly Ringwald…THE CONVERSATIONSusan and Sharon share the crazy story of how they met Jon Cryer and got him on the show!BEING AN ACTOR IS CRAP: First day, first film, Jon is 20 years-old -- and Robert Altman is throwing fake bird shit all over him. But it turns out he wasn't a virgin: “I just seemed like one.”On opening day of No Small Affair, Jon snuck into a theater just in time to see himself take off his shirt on screen -- and hear someone yell: “Where's the beef?”When Jon met Andrew McCarthy and Molly Ringwald on the Pretty in Pink set, he thought they didn't like him. Turns out he was only half-right.The original ending of Pretty in Pink has Molly Ringwald's Andie politely shutting down Andrew McCarthy's Blane, and dancing in solidarity with Cryer's Duckie (to Davie Bowie's Heroes) -- but test audiences HATED it! So, the ending was changed making sure that Andie ended up with cute and sensitive, rich-boy, Blane.GETTING MOSHED: While filming Dudes, Penelope Spheeris had Jon and castmate Dan Roebuck thrown into the mosh pit at a Vandals concert -- and they barely lived to tell about it!So, join Susan and Sharon -- and Jon -- as they talk Morgan Freeman, Escape From Alcatraz, Richard Gere, Wonder Woman, Al Pacino, Cher, Annie Potts, Mark Hamill, The Bad News Bears -- and getting naked for laughs on Two And A Half Men!AUDIO-OGRAPHYListen to Suzanne Rico's podcast The Man Who Calculated Death (produced by Jon Cryer and Lisa Joyner) at TheManWhoCalculatedDeath.comAnd Jon's other podcast, Lawyers, Gun & Money at Apple.

Send us a textFairfax criminal defense lawyer Jonathan Katz derives tremendous inspiration in his courtroom work from teacher Robert Thurman, for his humor, caring realness, great storytelling ability, and certainly his genius in conveying Buddhist, mindfulness and spiritual ideas in a way that draws in the audience. In this episode of Beat the Prosecution, Jon Katz goes beyond what has already been written about Bob, to find out what energizes and inspires him to be the great person and teacher that he is. Bob's story is fascinating, to say the least. In his early twenties or so, he went to Asia, and ultimately became a monastic. He was not even aware of the Beatles when they took America by storm. Then, Bob returned to layperson life, and became a Buddhist scholar and is a major translator of Buddhist texts. He was a professor at Amherst College and then Columbia University. He co-founded Tibet House in New York, along with Richard Gere and Philip Glass. With his wife Nena Thurman, he spearheaded the Menla reatreat center in the Catskills, which is a project of Tibet House. The greatness of the Thurman name expands further with their daughter Uma Thurman. Jon Katz first started reading Bob Thurman's writings and listening to him around fifteen years ago, and met him twelve years ago. Bob is able to tackle even the most challenging and troubling issues, and permeate them with his infectious, compassionate and riveting humor. Bob would be a great trial lawyer; fully, persuasively, and entertainingly engaging the audience, clearing the air of unnecessarily heavy energy, vibrating highly, and distilling the message without needing to rehash unnecessary factoids. Experience Bob's essence, persona and brilliance with his podcast, videos and books at BobThurman.com . Jon recommends visiting and donating to Tibet House, and visiting the Menla Retreat Center. Bob recommends reading his Wisdom is Bliss book Jon also very much likes Bob's Infinite LIfe book. Among the opportunities to meet Robert Thurman is the is the mid-August 2025 Ram Dass Legacy Summer Mountain Retreat in North Carolina. Pretty Woman was released in 1990. One of the most beloved and successful romantic comedies of all time, the film tells the Cinderella story of a sex worker, played by Julia Roberts, who finds love with a slick businessman - Richard Gere - after he picks her up on Hollywood Boulevard.Fast forward to 2025 and the astonishing Oscar success of Anora - director Sean Baker's tale of a young sex worker whose whirlwind affair with a Russian billionaire's son turns bad, fast.So how has the way we treat sex work on screen changed? Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode delve into the long and thorny relationship between cinema and sex work. Mark speaks to film historian and critic Pamela Hutchinson about how sex work has been tackled in over a hundred years of movies - from early silent films like Pandora's Box, to the work of Sean Baker. They discuss Jane Fonda's Oscar-winning turn as a ‘call girl' in Klute, and look at how male sex worker films like Midnight Cowboy might approach the subject differently. Meanwhile, Ellen talks to Andrea Werhun, the writer, performer and real-life sex worker who served as a consultant on Anora - about her work on the film, and her love for another Richard Gere sex work film, American Gigolo. And Ellen also speaks to Kristen Lovell and Zachary Drucker, whose 2023 documentary The Stroll traced the history of trans sex workers in New York City's Meatpacking District. Kristen and Zachary discuss why sex work has been a key part of trans history - and what they think Anora's success means for sex workers. Escuchar audio

Celebrity gossip has always had a dark side. Those whispered tales of stars behaving badly, dying mysteriously, or hiding shocking secrets spread through Hollywood parties like wildfire, creating urban legends that live far longer than they deserve. Even in our hyper-connected age, these stories remain strangely persistent – because deep down, we want to believe.Kyle, Ben, and Alejandro gleefully dissect the wildest Hollywood myths you've definitely heard before. Remember when everyone swore Paul McCartney died in 1966 and was replaced by a lookalike named Billy Shears? The hosts untangle the bizarre web of "clues" fans claimed to find in Beatles album covers and songs played backward. Then there's the notorious Richard Gere gerbil rumor – a story so persistent it made its way into the movie "Scream" and prompted Barbara Walters herself to awkwardly address it during an interview. From Mr. Rogers' supposed secret life as a deadly military sniper to the enduring debate about Bert and Ernie's relationship status, we explore why these myths take hold and what they reveal about our culture. The team brings their trademark humor to these dark corners of entertainment history, finding the humanity and absurdity beneath stories that wouldn't die. Whether you're hearing these tales for the first time or fondly remember sharing them on your middle school playground, this episode will make you question what other "facts" you've accepted without evidence.Subscribe now and join our community of curious minds exploring entertainment's strangest corners. For as long as he can remember, Leonard Koren has been searching for beauty and pleasure. Throughout his career, the author and artist—he prefers the term “creator”—has spent considerable time putting to paper expressions and conceptual views that architects, artists, designers, and others have long struggled to find the proper framing of or words for. In 1976, when he launched the counterculture publication WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing, he ushered in the idea of “gourmet bathing,” which has maintained a potent cultural niche in the nearly 50 years since. With Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers, published in 1994, Koren introduced the Japanese expression for “beautiful, imperfect, and impermanent” to the West, where it quickly took on a life of its own. Perhaps one of Koren's greatest talents is his rare ability to translate philosophical meditations on seemingly esoteric subjects into accessible, approachable texts about ways of being, seeing, thinking, making, and feeling. On the episode, Koren details his best—and worst—baths, and explains why he views his life as one long aesthetic experience.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Leonard Koren[4:01] “Undesigning the Bath”[7:30] Century Tower[7:30] 7132 Hotel (Therme Vals)[9:26] “WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing”[9:26] Max Palevsky[9:26] Craig Elwood[13:32] “From ‘WET' to ‘Wabi-Sabi': Leonard Koren's Adventurous Aesthetic Journey”[13:32] Mick Jagger[13:32] Richard Gere[13:32] Debbie Harry[17:09] Charlie Haas[18:25] “The Slow Lane”[18:25] Pilar Viladas[21:49] “How to Take a Japanese Bath”[21:49] “Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers”[21:49] “Wabi-Sabi: Further Thoughts”[28:23] Okakura Kakuzō's “The Book of Tea”[31:38] Glenn Adamson[31:38] Sen no Rikyū[39:29] “Noise Reduction: A 10-Minute Meditation for Quieting the Mind”[42:32] “The Haggler's Handbook”[44:22] “283 Useful Ideas from Japan”[46:56] “The Flower Shop”[46:56] Blumenkraft[46:56] “On Creating Things Aesthetic”[46:56] “Which “Aesthetics” Do You Mean?”

Bruce Vilanch has written monologues for Oscars hosts like Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Steve Martin, Ellen DeGeneres, David Letterman, and more. And in this episode, he not only shares some of his favorite jokes, but also reveals which of the many hosts he worked with over more than two decades gave him the most trouble. As the 97th annual Academy Awards approach this weekend, Vilanch walks through the highs and lows of his illustrious Oscars career, from nearly blowing it his first time out with the disastrous Rob Lowe and Snow White opening, through the game-changing Billy Crystal years, to the Anne Hathaway and James Franco-hosted year that marked the unfortunate end of his long run. Along the way, he also shares some shocking stories about Oscar presenters, including his jaw-dropping theory about the origins of that Richard Gere gerbil rumor—and reveals why he turned down the opportunity to write for the very first season of ‘Saturday Night Live.' And Vilanch, whose new book ‘It Seemed Like a Bad Idea at the Time' chronicles his biggest failures as a writer, takes us inside the most infamous bomb of his career: ‘The Star Wars Holiday Special.' ‘It Seemed Like a Bad Idea at the Time' on AmazonFollow Matt Wilstein on Bluesky @mattwilstein Follow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpod and Threads @lastlaughpodHighlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast Hosted on Acast.
