This one is arguably best enjoyed in its video form (YouTube/Facebook). Over another delicious dinner from Byron’s (1701 West Lawrence), I’m joined by hypnotist Chris Jones and returning favorites Dr. Daryl Wilson (the Bollweevils) and Stubhy (Lucky Boys Confusion). Chris is performing at Zanies (Wells) on 3/18 and Zanies (Rosemont) on 3/30. As a preview of his shows, he convinces Daryl and Stubhy to try and get hypnotized on camera/mic! This was definitely a first for the podcast. If you’re curious, definitely see what Chris is all about when he’s at Zanies in March! (Special shout-out to Chris’s videographer Calvin, who got tucked all the way in the back of the car and only briefly seen and heard during the episode.) Speaking of Byron’s, they do catering, with both food drop off and live cooking options. Welcome to the second part of the three-volume Episode 1000 anniversary episode, recorded at live events held at four locations throughout the greater Chicagoland area. My original idea was to combine all the interviews and performances into one single release. As fate would have it… it's just too much content for one single episode, so I decided to break it up and make it more digestible.   For this episode, recorded at Skeleton Key Brewery in Woodridge, Siren Records in McHenry, and Liar's Club in Chicago, you'll hear (and see):   Theme song creator Josh Caterer from Liar's Club. An interview with returning favorites wht.rbbt.obj from Siren Records. Comedian Mike Stricker with a comedy set from Skeleton Key. Herb Rosen, owner of Liar's Club. A blistering performance and fun interview with Bellhead from Liar's Club. And a rock and roll story from author Steve Silver.     In between segments, you'll also get to enjoy messages from former podcast guests, sharing their Episode 1000 greetings. This time around, that includes Dr. Daryl Wilson of the Bollweevils, Sincere Engineer, Todd Sucherman of Styx, Take the Reins and award-winning journalist Charlie Meyerson.   ##   CCC is sponsored by Easy Automation. The Bollweevils is a punk band from Chicago. They formed during the Naked Raygun era which was where the band members met and also, for whom they eventually opened. The group released a number of albums on Dr. Strange Records; though, their first, minor releases were on Underdog Records (Chicago). The group's current record label, Go Deaf Records LLC, is owned and operated by the band. The Bollweevils released a new album, "Essential," on Red Scare Industries in 2023. It was their first album release in 14 years. Sunday, January 14 in the Chicago area was, by all accounts, miserable. The windchill dipped well below zero and it was the kind of day where no one wanted to leave the warmth of their home. I had a rescheduled podcast interview planned for the afternoon; so, weather be damned, I was going to make the trip to the west suburbs to get it done. Unfortunately, my guest forgot about the rescheduled date (after he had to cancel the previous one due to weather). That left me cold and bitter with a car set up for a podcast interview. I didn't want to shut everything down and call it a day; instead, I called my friend Dr. Daryl Wilson of the Bollweevils, who happened to live 10 minutes from the interview location.   Discussed in our unplanned and impromptu chat: *Daryl's recent appearance on NBC-5 to talk about staying safe in the weather. *I got a battery-powered snowblower. *2023: Great year for the Bollweevils *The band is recording a new song this month! *Daryl's creative process *Screen time and youths *Influencer culture *Banana bread Car Con Carne is presented by Alex Ross Art. When you hear 90's punk bands from Chicago talk about their inspirations, The Bollweevils are almost always mentioned in some capacity. After 14+ years of not releasing music, The Bollweevils are back in action, with the record Essential coming out in May on Red Scare. Before talking about the new music, we jumped in a time machine and discussed being on Dr. Strange before Red Scare and the bands that were on the label - a list that includes Face to Face and 7 Seconds. Dr. Dr. Daryl Wilson was passionate about being on Dr. Strange, and has the same feelings towards Red Scare, calling them the band's ride or die. There was a lot of history in this episode. It was mostly the history of punk so if you like hearing about bands who paved the way for punk music - then this is the interview for you. But, we also deeply discussed his passion for comics and how frequent he is picking up new releases. Wilson got accepted into medical school and eventually had to start a residency. It was a big reason why he stepped away from the band for an extended time period and didn't tour with the band. He's now an emergency room doctor and has a ton of experience in the medical field under his belt. There is no better opportunity to put a big focus on the band again and see where it goes. The band released the new record on May 5 and have since hit the road. We talked about the new songs and how everything came together again. There was also a discussion about involvement in punk and there has been growth over the years.

Clean electrons are vital to the net-zero economy. What about molecules? There is a global race to expand hydrogen production for industry and heavy transportation – using wind, solar and biomass as a feedstock.  North American countries are taking hydrogen innovation seriously, passing policy to spur innovation. The United States' Inflation Reduction Act and Canada's Fall Economic Statement both offer production tax credits for clean hydrogen.  China is the global leader in production. But the country primarily uses coal as a feedstock. To make it clean, they'll need to invest heavily in renewables and carbon capture technology. With so much attention now on the industry, will it finally live up to the hype? How have recent developments in geopolitics and policy changed the outlook for the hydrogen industry? And what sectors will it help decarbonize?  This week host Bill Loveless talks with Daryl Wilson, the executive director of the Hydrogen Council.  Before joining the Hydrogen Council in 2020, Daryl served as CEO of Hydrogenics, a fuel cell and electrolysis technologies provider. During his time there, he oversaw the world's largest new electrolysis project and the world's first hydrogen powered public train service. In 2017 the Hydrogen Council released its first report – an outlook through 2050. Bill talks to Daryl about whether that outlook has changed with the recent instability of global energy markets and the war in Ukraine. They also discuss how new policy developments could spur innovation.

'Buying a dollar for 80 cents' is an old investing cliche that's rarely taken literally these days. In a bygone era, 'net-nets' - stocks trading below the value of their net tangible assets - were a relatively common occurrence. Some investors built their whole portfolios (or careers) around them. But finding them today is easier said than done.  When dealing with listed investment companies and listed investment trusts (LICs) though, buying a dollar for 80 cents is commonplace. In fact, according to Daryl Wilson from Affluence Funds Management, buying at a discount should be central to the strategy.   Not only is it possible to pick up assets at a discount, but "the quality of managers is tremendous," says Daryl.  In this episode of The Rules of Investing podcast, we take a deep dive into the world of LICs. In this episode, Dr. G is joined by Kate Johnson, MD, assistant professor and board-certified psychiatrist at Loyola University Medical Center, and Daryl Wilson, MD, board-certified emergency medicine physician at Edward-Elmhurst Health, to discuss the hidden health dangers of loneliness and isolation. Can feelings of loneliness lead to mental or physical health problems? Social connection is a basic human need and it's important to explore its natural (sometimes complicated) link to good health. What people have experienced during the coronavirus pandemic has really underscored how much people need each other. Humans have an inherent need for meaningful human connection—it's as important as food, water and shelter. Isolation can not only lead to mental illness such as depression, it can manifest in physical illness such as heart disease. Can isolation or loneliness lead to illness? What's a healthy way to cope with loneliness? Fortunately, humans are resourceful. People can find creative ways to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation and maintain a healthy mind-body connection.   Guests Kate Johnson, MD - assistant professor and board-certified psychiatrist, Loyola University Medical Center. Daryl Wilson, MD - board-certified emergency medicine physician, Edward-Elmhurst Health.   Resources: How to combat loneliness and protect your health Depression can take a toll on your body, too Never a reason: talking with your teen about depression Depression doesn't discriminate Is depression a normal part of getting older? Laughter as medicine How to cope with COVID-19 until you get the vaccine Are you socially well? Get social new moms. It's for your own good. Do you need a social media break? How introverts and extroverts are handling the pandemic The first step to feeling better is identifying the problem. Linden Oaks Behavioral Health can help. Make wellness a priority. Daryl Wilson is an amazing human being, I’m just going to get that out of the way now. Lead singer of The Bollweevils, Doctor, family man, my friend. Pre-pandemic, when we still had live shows, the Doc’s “injury reports” after each Bollweevils live show were a humorous break from the hum drum, a postive and funny thing to read on social media. Funny to an extent - I always felt a little bad for Doc when reading, as we’re the same age, or damn close and I know how much worse things hurt now than when I was 25. Daryl isn’t your run-of-the-mill singer, either, he’s all over the place and almost a one man show when The Bollweevils are playing. Besides all of that, Daryl has incredible insight into what it is to simply be human. We talk about skateboarding, punk rock, doctor stuff, racism and so much more. Four songs by The Bollweevils are also in this one - “Rodney”, “Pressure Cooker”, “Talk” and “Wrong From Right”. There are also PSA’s from the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression and Black Lives Matter Chicago.

It's a Chicago punk rock summit as I'm joined by returning guests Daryl Wilson (The Bollweevils) and Denis Buckley (88 Fingers Louie) at Dante's Pizza. Here's what we talk about this week: Is Denis now tied for most-frequently appearing guest on the show? "I have no agenda." Why in the hell did I say Blaze Pizza? It's DANTE'S. And Dante's is sooo much better. I got the lion's share of grease. That's what you get for grabbing from the bottom of the bag. Daryl thinks the grease will be absorbed subcutaneously. He's a doctor. Purell hand sanitizer is the only thing I had on hand to solve the grease problem. Dante's slice of the day scared us. A car almost hit us right at the onset of recording. Jesus Jones gets more "airtime" than they have in 27 years. Full confession: Daryl and I went back for "seconds" the last time we recorded together. The 90s punk scene that birthed The Bollweevils and 88 Fingers Louie (Okay, technically Bollweevils started in '89). The return of Apocalypse Hoboken. I need to work on the liner notes for their album release. "Punk rock is kind of self-destructive in a way... we're all damaged." Denis could have been a fireman, if not for punk rock. "To be clear, I'm going to be hosing off my hands." Not only does the podcast promise to get sexier as it progresses, but Daryl and Denis arrived on **** *** night! "Let the dirt wash over you." Denis and Daryl's board games of choice. We've all been playing Monopoly wrong. Denis and Daryl's first concerts: "Can I include an opera?" "No." Kids going to concerts now vs. kids going in the 80s. Cheap Trick's setlist problem. Daryl to Denis: "You don't pick fights with people you can beat." Fugazi broke up a fight between Daryl and Denis. There's nothing more punk rock than a "Frasier" reference. Favorite movies are discussed: Blues Brothers, Blazing Saddles, Big Trouble in Little China, Truth or Dare. Wait... Truth or Dare? Why I am "dead" to Daryl, and what made Denis call me a "Car Con Asshole." A weird circus bike rode past the Boost Mobile Mazda 3. Damn hipsters. "She Caught the Katy" is one of the best songs in Blues Brothers. Favorite horror movies are discussed. "Alien" makes it to the top of the list. RIP the Golf Mill Theater

This week, "punk rock doctor" Daryl Wilson joins me for a beef and sausage combo from one of the greatest places on earth, Johnnie's Beef (7500 W North Ave, Elmwood Park, IL 60707). Daryl's most famously known as the frontman for legendary Chicago punk rock band The Bollweevils. By day, he's the EMS Medical Director at Edward Hospital in Naperville. If you're listening to this before Thanksgiving 2017, go see Bollweevils with Pegboy on 11/22 at 1st Ward/Chop Shop! Here's what we chatted about on this week's Boost Mobile-sponsored extravaganza: Daryl went hot; I went sweet My first contact with Daryl, and the punk rock ethics that kept us separated in the 1990s My sense of relief that Daryl's a doctor, as I committed myself to the not-cardiac-friendly beef combo. The time I was flipped off in Wicker Park, just for working in radio Daryl's med school experience Daryl and I wore kinda-similar outfits to the podcast recording The documentary "Men: The Series," which features Daryl Daryl's strange burping issue The temptation of going for a second round of beef/sausage combos: Do we do it? We surely aren't that irresponsible... right? Daryl's most fond memories of the 90s Chicago's punk scene vs. Metro in the 90s The Bollweevils vs. Metro in the 90s ("Were you guys banned from Metro?" "Technically, yes.") The Fireside Bowl and the horrifying bathrooms there The ongoing influence of Naked Raygun ("they're the shit") What would have happened to the Bollweevils had Daryl not gone to med school? Technically, Daryl could kill any of his bandmates and bring them back to life My gratitude to Daryl's wife for letting him spend the night eating like an asshole with me The topic that causes Daryl to freeze  The great Power Man and Iron Fist comic books of days past
