We open with a Knicks comeback story and ties it to recovery ("you can't quit"), then announces the Dopey Film Festival and shouts out the Baldini family. After reading listener comments and a wild listener email from "Stan the Man" in London (a multi-day cocaine/orgy/LSD bender), Dave plays a Greatest Hits episode featuring Kimber King — a returning guest and harm reduction hotline worker who became known for shooting fentanyl into her neck and calling for help. Kimber's interview traces her full addiction arc: drinking at 12, Adderall at 14, cocaine with her mom and brother, her brother's brutal murder at 24 (she was 17), heroin at 22, meth in rural Georgia, an Aryan Brotherhood compound, a "magical nasal spray cocktail" of fentanyl/coke/ketamine/Xanax, multiple overdoses, evictions, a blind boyfriend who stole her car, and finally — surrender at a detox intake desk, sobbing and telling the truth. Now two years sober with a baby daughter and her mom living with her, Kimber works in harm reduction and crisis intervention. ALL THAT AND MOREEEEEEEEEE!   Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This week's episode is a little different. Instead of focusing on a single crime, we're diving into an entire criminal organization, one built on loyalty, fear, violence, and an unbreakable code of silence. It all begins with the disappearance of 19-year-old Breanna Taylor from a quiet Ohio suburb in 2006. At first, her case seemed like another missing-person investigation. But as detectives dug deeper, they uncovered something far more disturbing: a sprawling white supremacist criminal enterprise operating in plain sight. What started as a search for one missing young woman would eventually expose a network of murder, drug trafficking, racketeering, and corruption, and lead to what federal prosecutors called the largest white supremacist racketeering case in American history. West Texas Justice: A Dark, Fast-Paced Ride Through Moral Chaos with Author Jim Nesbitt

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jim Nesbitt, author of the book The Fatal Saving Grace. Award-winning author Jim Nesbitt has written five hard-boiled Texas crime thrillers that feature an indelible protagonist, Dallas private eye Ed Earl Burch, a cashiered homicide detective with bad knees, a wounded liver and an empty bank account. He's smart, tough, profane and reckless: nobody's hero—and nobody's fool.   Drawing on four decades as a journalist chasing hurricanes, presidential candidates, neo-Nazis, cops, crooks and cowboys, Nesbitt writes hard-hitting novels bristling with relentless action, pulse-racing plots, solid storylines and a colorful cast of characters. Gritty and remorseless, these stories take readers on a thrill ride that runs from the gleaming towers of Dallas and Houston to the stark desert mountains of the Texas Big Bend country and northern Mexico.   This is hard-boiled detective fiction at its finest -- taut, tense and uncompromising sagas of revenge and redemption. With his pitch-perfect voice and keen eye for detail, Jim Nesbitt has created extraordinary tales centered on a main character like no other: the deeply flawed but wildly compelling Ed Earl Burch. They are damned good stories exceptionally well-told.   A lapsed horseman, pilot and saloon sport with a keen appreciation of old guns, vintage cars and tractors, red meat, good cigars, aged whisky without an “e”; and a well-told story, Nesbitt is also a diehard Tennessee Vols fan, who now lives in enemy territory -- Athens, Alabama -- with his wife, Pam. He is working on his sixth Ed Earl Burch novel, THE PERFECT TRAIN WRECK.   In my book review, I stated The Fatal Saving Grace is Book 5 of the Ed Earl Burch Hard-Boiled Texas Crime Thrillers series by Jim Nesbitt. I enjoyed this crime thriller and the crusty old character of Ed Earl Burch. This felt like a cross between an old western and a noir fiction with characters that weren't all good or all bad. In fact, Jim had me hoping that one of the bad guys might not have to face prison time.   Burch, as he is known to his peers, was once a lawman but had his badge taken away. Then he spent the next couple of decades as a PI before getting a badge again. However, the transition from "do anything as long as you don't get caught" to "follow the law" isn't easy on Burch or those he works with. This is especially true when it becomes apparent that a killer they thought was dead is very much alive and back at the killing game. Throw in the Aryan Brotherhood, the Dixie-Mafia, drug turf wars, and over-inflated lawman egos, and you've got a story worth reading.   NOTE: This is not a clean book. There is some rather graphic killing scenes and a bit of loud sex, but none of it felt out of character for the protagonist or his world.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   You can follow Author Jim Nesbitt Website: https://jimnesbittbooks.com/ FB: @edearlburchbooks Substack: @edearl56   Purchase The Fatal Saving Grace on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4mmDX5z Ebook: https://amzn.to/3O0RTFE   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? In this part 2 chat, we sit down with Mark Branon who was sentenced to 60 years (a life sentence) and survived some of the most dangerous federal penitentiaries in the United States. He shares the full story—from alleged government misconduct in his case, to fighting endless appeals that went nowhere, to navigating brutal prison politics where violence was a daily reality. Inside, he lived through: -Extreme conditions in Maricopa County Jail -Relentless pressure to snitch—and the consequences of refusing -High-level prison yards like Victorville, where stabbings were routine -Years in solitary confinement (the SHU) -Organized riots, race wars, and prison hierarchy -Personal loss, including the tragic death of his son while he was locked up Despite everything, he eventually overturned part of his case and walked free. Now on the outside, he's focused on helping others—especially those dealing with grief, trauma, and rebuilding after rock bottom. While doing defense work, Ariel crosses paths with inmate Michael Thompson. Incarcerated for decades on murder charges, she finds him to be soft-spoken, educated, and spiritual. Ariel's intrigued by Thompson's life growing up on an Indian reservation, his claims of being wrongfully convicted, his time leading the brutal Aryan Brotherhood prison gang, and his quest for enlightenment. He dispenses wisdom as he recounts his violent past and deeds done to atone for them. But prosecutor Heather Brown finds Thompson's stories to be false or exaggerated, tales that shift as they suit his purpose. Whereas Ariel sees a reformed man worthy of a second chance, Heather believes him to be a slippery con artist intent on talking his way out of prison. In the podcast “Love + Radio: Blood Memory,” host Nick van der Kolk explores Thompson's life in a true crime series presented largely without narration. Thirty-three-year-old lacrosse coach Diane Whipple was attacked and killed just steps from her apartment door in San Francisco. Two massive Presa Canario dogs, Bane and Hera, mauled her in the hallway of her building while neighbors desperately tried to help. She never made it outside. This was not a random dog attack. The dogs belonged to attorneys Marjorie Knoller and Robert Noel, who had taken them in despite repeated warnings about their aggression. The animals had been bred for guarding and linked to a prison-based dog breeding operation run by Aryan Brotherhood inmate Paul Schneider. Neighbors had reported dangerous behavior long before Diane was killed.Prosecutors argued that Knoller and Noel knew the dogs posed a serious risk and chose to ignore it. Knoller was convicted of second-degree murder. Noel was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. The case marked a legal turning point, establishing that knowingly creating a dangerous situation can carry the same consequences as direct violence.Diane's partner, Sharon Smith, also made history by filing California's first same-sex wrongful death lawsuit. The case left a lasting impact on criminal law, civil liability, and how society defines responsibility when warnings go unheeded.

The motto of the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang is “blood in, blood out." During his 45 years in prison, Michael Thompson became one of the few people to leave the white supremacist gang alive — and to testify against it. But is Thompson a gentle soul trapped by a broken system, or, as his critics claim, a master manipulator who can't be trusted? Blood Memory, a new series from Love + Radio, grapples with that question. Winner of the Best Independent Nonfiction Audio Award at the 2025 Tribeca Festival. The new season unfolds February 2. Police and Gangs, Her Battle With The Department and Court. In the gritty streets of California's Bay Area, former police officer Janelle Perez patrolled neighborhoods ravaged by gang violence, battling not only criminal organizations but also the very department she once proudly served. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. “I came into law enforcement with purpose,” Janelle shared during an interview on The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show which is featured as a free podcast episode available on their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and many podcast platforms. The episode is also promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other platforms. “But I never imagined that the hardest fight I'd face wouldn't be with the gangs, but with my own department.” Janelle Perez is a former Bay Area police officer whose career was defined by front-line encounters with violent gangs like the Sureños, Norteños, and Wah Ching, organized groups deeply rooted in California's urban corridors which also grew into the suburbs. In her role, she confronted everything from drug trafficking to gangland turf wars fueled by stolen firearms and fear. But her story doesn't end with arrests and patrols. Her memoir, The Moral Police, tells a deeper story. It chronicles her unexpected and painful descent from decorated officer to plaintiff in a courtroom battle against the police department that dismissed her. Police and Gangs, Her Battle With The Department and Court. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . Perez was fired after eight months with the Roseville Police Department, she says for an off-duty relationship with a fellow officer during her separation. She took her case to the court, citing gender discrimination and privacy violations. Her battle stretched across seven years and reached the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, where she initially won. But that victory was later overturned. “It wasn't just a legal fight,” Janelle said. Janelle, a Penn State graduate in Justice Administration and Sociology, became a voice for reform and an advocate for female leadership in law enforcement. In her podcast interviews and media appearances, she says that the justice system often fails its own, especially when gender dynamics and departmental politics collide. Throughout her time in law enforcement, Perez worked in communities where gangs weren't just a threat, they were a way of life. From the Eddy Rock and Knock Out Posse gangs in San Francisco to major prison gangs like the Mexican Mafia, Nuestra Familia, and Aryan Brotherhood, she navigated a violent landscape that demanded vigilance, intuition, and resilience. “These gangs enforce their own kind of law,” Perez explained. “And when the actual justice system fails from the inside, it becomes hard to tell who you're really fighting.” Police and Gangs, Her Battle With The Department and Court. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. Statistics underscore the challenges she faced. By the early 1990s, California had become a hub for gang activity, with thousands of organized groups and hundreds of thousands of members. Urban centers like Oakland, San Jose, and Richmond became battlegrounds where gang-related homicides and turf wars eclipsed many other forms of crime. According to national surveys, gang membership and criminal incidents surged between 1991 and 1993, peaking at over half a million members and hundreds of thousands of gang-related crimes. In these conditions, law enforcement officers walk a razor-thin line. “When you're confronting people who operate by their own rules, you expect your department to have your back,” Janelle said. “But that's not always the case. And that's what hurts the most.” The Moral Police doesn't just delve into the systemic flaws of the police system. It's a call for accountability, leadership, and reform. Through her writing, radio interviews, and podcast appearances, Janelle Perez shines a light on the importance of transparency in law enforcement—especially when those in power misuse it. You can listen to her stories and interview on our website for free in addition to platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and other major podcast platforms. Her story resonates across social platforms and professional networks, drawing attention from news outlets and discussion forums alike. The Facebook and Instagram comments are filled with encouragement. LinkedIn readers are engaging with posts about her on workplace equity and integrity. Police and Gangs, Her Battle With The Department and Court. “I wanted to inspire others not to stay silent. Whether you're in law enforcement, education, or tech, speak up when something is wrong,” she said. “You shouldn't have to lose your job to hold leadership accountable.” Now, Janelle continues to share her journey and advocate for those who feel silenced within institutions meant to protect and serve. Her podcast appearances are gaining momentum, and her book is sparking conversation in communities far beyond California. Her story is about much more than a badge. It's about courage, conviction, and confronting the battles that exist both outside and within the blue line. What started as a small gang of white prisoners in a California state prison in the 1960's is now one of, if not the most powerful prison gang across America, with tens of thousands of soldiers across federal and state lines. Though they're alleged to only have approximately 150 full-fledged members, the Aryan Brotherhood has found ways to dominate prison economies and expand their rackets into the outside world. The Brand, as the Aryan Brotherhood is sometimes called, has morphed from a self-described white supremacist prison gang into an all-encompassing criminal syndicate putting profit and power over their ideological stances. “In October 1975, I was shot six times. And while I was on the hospital gurney, doctor told me I was going to die. I heard a very clear voice that spoke to me and said, you're not going to die. You're going to be a chaplain at San Quentin prison.” (Chaplain Earl Smith) Chaplain Earl Smith believes that ministry to the incarcerated is about so much more than rehabilitation. It's about regeneration. Using the power of his own story of transformation from gang member to pastor, Chaplain Smith has maintained a faithful presence and witness for many decades of pastoral service to the incarcerated at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, and now to professional athletes (including the Golden State Warriors, San Francisco 49ers, and the San Francisco Giants). Today on the show Mark Labberton and Chaplain Earl Smith discuss the moral and spiritual factors of prison chaplaincy and ministry for those on death row; the meaning of freedom and education; how he ministered to the leader of the Aryan Brotherhood; the difference that positive mentoring and coaching makes in young people's lives; and the transformative power of the gospel to go beyond rehabilitation to regeneration. About Earl Smith Born and reared in Stockton, California, the cycle of events in Earl's life came to a head in 1975 when he was shot 6 times while living the life of a minor gangster. Although expected to die, Earl's father's faith, prayers, and love seemed to bring him through. The words of his father have motivated him, since that event, “you are a rebel, but you are God's rebel, and God is going to use you to His glory.” In 1983, at the age of 27, Earl became the youngest person ever hired as a Protestant Chaplain by the California Department of Corrections. He is author of Death Row Chaplain: Unbelievable True Stories from America's Most Notorious Prison. Chaplain Smith currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer for Franklin Home, a Transition Living/Reentry Home for men and is the Team Pastor for the San Francisco 49ers' and the Golden State Warriors. From 1998 to 2006 Chaplain Smith was the Chapel Leader for the San Francisco Giants. Chaplain Smith has ministered to teams playing in NFL Super Bowls, MLB World Series and NBA Championships. In 2000, Chaplain Smith was recognized as the National Correctional Chaplain of the Year. Chaplain Smith has appeared on numerous broadcasts, including HBO, CNN, The 700 Club, Trinity Broadcasting Network and The History Channel. Earl has been featured in Christianity Today, Ebony, Guidepost, Ministry Today, Newsweek, People's Weekly, The African Americans and Time. Show Notes Get your copy of Death Row Chaplain: Unbelievable True Stories from America's Most Notorious Prison How Mark and Chaplain Smith met The value of education “I had to stop my education because of the execution schedule at San Quentin.” How Earl Smith got into prison chaplaincy “In October 1975, I was shot six times. And while I was on the hospital gurney, doctor told me I was going to die. I heard a very clear voice that spoke to me and said, you're not going to die. You're going to be a chaplain at San Quentin prison.” What San Quentin prison is like “We used to call San Quentin the Bastille by the Bay. The thing that really stood out for me was the fact that for 13 of the first 16 months I was there, the prison was locked down. The day I interviewed, two people were killed, so they stopped my interview twice. So I understood where I was. I understood the context of confinement. What I also went in there understanding was. It was not about rehabilitation. It was about regeneration.” “I believe that that's part of chaplaincy is not to allow the confines of the wall to dictate who you are.” A sense of liberty Fear and reality Earl Smith's ministry to the leader of the Aryan Brotherhood How faith shaped a capacity to be free from fear for the sake of love Mass incarceration and the new Jim Crow The drug epidemic and its impact on mass incarceration “How can you help us prepare these guys to come home?” “Whether you're on condemned role, if you have a life without the possibility of parole, or life sentence, or whatever it is, my job is still to share the same gospel message.” “Present your body as a living sacrifice.” Pastoral care in the prison system Calling prisoners by their first names instead of their numbers “When you've done it onto the least of these, you've done it to me, so there's a value in your presence.” Chaplaincy to professional athletes “The states that have the largest prison systems are also the states that send the most professional athletes in the pro sports.” Golden State Warriors and San Francisco 49ers The difference that positive mentoring and coaching makes in young people's lives “Every man wants someone to acknowledge there's something positive in what you're doing.” “They May Know Your Number, But God Knows Your Name” (Clifton Jansky, country western singer) God's way of paying attention to us; “how vested God is in our pursuit of being fully human” (reference to Marilynne Robinson) Performance and identity (reference to Ben Houltberg) Jerry Rice, #80 and “who wore the number before you?” Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action “God is a relational God. … Sports is relational.” When did chaplaincy in sports become a thing? Pat Ritchie's chaplaincy Understanding the value and difference chaplaincy makes Documentary and Film Adaptation: Death Row Chaplain “A story not of rehabilitation but regeneration” “That's really what the story is about. Some of my yesterday, some of my today. And what I believe to be my tomorrow.” Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.

The rivalry between the Aryan Brotherhood (AB) and the Black Guerrilla Family (BGF) is one of the most intense and violent conflicts within the U.S. prison system. Originating in the 1960s at San Quentin State Prison, these gangs were formed with starkly different ideologies: the AB centered on white supremacy and racial solidarity, while the BGF was driven by black revolutionary and Marxist ideals. Over the decades, both gangs expanded their influence through violent confrontations, strategic alliances, and a deep-seated commitment to their respective causes. Notable figures like Barry Mills of the AB and George Jackson of the BGF played crucial roles in shaping the groups' aggressive tactics and expansion, often resulting in bloody clashes and targeted assassinations to assert dominance and control over prison economies and territories. This conflict has had a significant impact on the U.S. prison system, leading to heightened security measures, increased violence, and a culture of fear and tension among inmates and staff. Both gangs employ a range of strategies, from leveraging corrupt prison staff to using a network of “cells” to maintain control and power. Their rivalry extends beyond prison walls, influencing street gangs and criminal networks, making them formidable forces both inside and outside of prison. The relentless pursuit of power by the AB and BGF perpetuates a cycle of violence and retribution, reflecting the harsh realities of survival and dominance within the penal system.(commercial at 9:16)to contact me:  bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

Public Enemy No. 1, also known as PEN1 or PENI, is a white supremacist gang that originated in Orange County, California, in the late 1980s. Initially formed by a group of young skinheads influenced by punk rock culture and neo-Nazi ideologies, the gang evolved into a powerful prison and street gang known for its violent and criminal activities.Key Points:Origins and Formation: PEN1 started as a loose group of white supremacist skinheads involved in petty crime. As members began entering the prison system, the gang became more structured and aligned itself with other white supremacist groups like the Aryan Brotherhood.Growth and Expansion: Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, PEN1 expanded by recruiting both in and out of prison, primarily involving itself in drug trafficking, especially methamphetamine, which became a significant source of income. The gang's violent reputation helped it grow and establish influence beyond California.Organizational Structure: PEN1 operates under a hierarchical structure with leaders known as "shot callers" who make key decisions. Below them are enforcers and recruiters who maintain order and discipline, and foot soldiers who engage in daily criminal activities like drug trafficking and violence.Ideology and Beliefs: The gang espouses a white supremacist ideology, promoting racial purity and superiority. Members are often identified by tattoos featuring neo-Nazi symbols. However, the gang's primary motivation is profit, and its criminal activities often extend beyond ideological bounds.Criminal Activities: PEN1 is heavily involved in drug trafficking, extortion, robbery, and violent crimes, both inside and outside of prison. The gang's violent tactics help maintain control and deter challenges from rivals, contributing to its fearsome reputation.Law Enforcement Response: PEN1 has been the target of numerous law enforcement operations aimed at disrupting its activities and dismantling its leadership. Despite these efforts, the gang remains resilient due to its decentralized structure and ability to adapt.Impact on Society and Prisons: PEN1's criminal activities contribute to societal issues such as drug addiction, violence, and instability, particularly in the communities and prisons where it operates. The gang's presence fosters a culture of fear and violence that affects both inmates and the general public.Current Status and Outlook: PEN1 continues to be a significant threat in both prisons and on the streets. While law enforcement efforts and changing dynamics may impact its future, the gang's adaptability and continued recruitment suggest it will remain a formidable presence.(commercial at 9:28)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

The Aryan Brotherhood (AB), also known as the Brand, is a white supremacist prison gang and organized crime syndicate in the United States. It was founded in the California state prison system in 1964, primarily at San Quentin State Prison, as a response to the perceived need for white inmates to band together in the face of increasing racial tensions within the prison system. Over the decades, the Aryan Brotherhood has grown into one of the most feared and powerful prison gangs in the country. The Aryan Brotherhood was formed in the mid-1960s by white inmates who sought protection from other racial groups, particularly African American and Hispanic gangs. Initially, the group adopted a strong white supremacist ideology, drawing inspiration from Nazi symbolism and imagery. Members typically display tattoos featuring swastikas, SS lightning bolts, and other white supremacist symbols, often combined with the initials "AB."The Aryan Brotherhood operates under a hierarchical structure, with a council or "commission" of senior members making key decisions for the gang. At the lower levels, members are organized into smaller units within individual prisons, but all are bound by a strict code of conduct that emphasizes loyalty, secrecy, and a willingness to commit acts of extreme violence. While the AB started as a prison gang, its influence extends beyond prison walls. Members are involved in a wide range of criminal activities, including drug trafficking, extortion, contract killings, and arms trafficking. The gang has also been known to collaborate with other criminal organizations, including the Mexican Mafia (La Eme) and the Hells Angels, despite their racial ideology, when it suits their criminal objectives.Although the Aryan Brotherhood was founded on white supremacist principles, its primary focus is criminal enterprise rather than ideological purity. The gang uses racism as a tool to recruit and motivate members, but in practice, it has shown a willingness to cooperate with non-white gangs when it benefits them financially or strategically. The Aryan Brotherhood has been linked to numerous violent crimes, both inside and outside of prison. These include murders, assaults, and riots. In the 1970s and 1980s, the gang solidified its reputation for brutality, often using murder as a way to enforce discipline and eliminate rivals. High-profile murders attributed to the Aryan Brotherhood include the killing of prison gang leaders from rival groups and the assassination of inmates who cooperated with authorities. One of the most infamous incidents involving the Aryan Brotherhood was the federal indictment of 40 members in 2002, which sought to dismantle the gang's leadership. Despite these efforts, the Aryan Brotherhood remains a potent force within the U.S. prison system. In this episode, we learn about "The Brand".(commercial at 9:56)to contact me:bobbyapucci@protonmail.com

From that point, he was contacted by the Aryan Brotherhood and started prospecting. He would go to 3 different prisons before being released and then began the straight life. For over a decade, Steve lived a clean life, making good money and running a family business. In a revealing episode of "Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski," psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott provides critical insights into the tragic case of 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham. The conversation focuses on the deeply flawed decision-making by Audrii's grandparents and father, who allowed a dangerous individual with ties to the Aryan Brotherhood onto their property under the guise of Christian charity. Key points from their discussion include: Misguided Actions: Audrii's family attempted to deflect blame for their catastrophic decision by pushing for legislative changes, overlooking their direct responsibility in the tragedy. Distorted Rationalization: The grandparents' rationalization for their actions, including minimizing the severity of sex offender registry offenses and advocating for "Audrii's Law," demonstrates a failure to grasp the gravity of their error. Inexplicable Presentation: The family's media interviews, characterized by bizarre staging and matching t-shirts, suggest an attempt to sway public perception rather than express genuine grief. Avoidance of Responsibility: The grandmother's insistence that they did everything right, despite the obvious risk posed by their guest, highlights a disturbing lack of accountability. Absence of Common Sense: The family's lack of judgment, from initially welcoming the individual to their current media crusade, underscores a profound absence of common sense and understanding of the real dangers their decision posed to Audrii. #JusticeForAudriiCunningham #MisplacedFaith #LegislativeChange #PsychotherapyInsights #FamilyAccountability #RationalizingDanger #ProtectingChildren Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
