Rise Against's Tim McIlrath looks back on the band's 25-year career while getting ready for a big 2025 that will include new music and a tour with Papa Roach.
Prior to their sold-out return to Franklin Music Hall in Philadelphia, Rise Against leader Tim McIlrath caught up backstage with Pierre Robert on 93.3 WMMR. Tim tells Pierre about the need to earn the name "Rise Against", as well as what the band could've been named when they were forming. He also discusses overcoming the nerves of playing a tour of mostly deeper cuts, the many socio-political topics their music addresses, and a timeline of when a new Rise Against record will arrive. At long last, two of the three buffoons that make up Shit Talk Reviews finally sat down to talk about what will be certainly considered one of the best albums of 2024: And Now I'm Just Gnashing My Teeth from new LA based powerhouse The Barbarians Of California. The album smacks of rock, metal, punk, hardcore, thrash and has a few surprises thrown in here and there just to keep us all on our toes. The band's lineup brings serious pedigree to the table with Eric Stenman on guitar and bass (Tinfed, 35 year studio guru as engineer, producer, mixer and stunt guitarist,) Aaron Bruno (singer of AWOLNATION, Under The Influence Of Giants, Home Town Hero,) Isaac Carpenter (drummer for AWOLNATION, Gosling, Loaded,) and Zach Irons (guitarist for AWOLNATION.) They also brought in Tim McIlrath from Rise Against and Daryl Taberski of Snapcase for guest appearances. While you might immediately assume that with such an AWOLNATION heavy lineup that The Barbarians Of California would be a similar band, you'd be wrong. There are certainly some AWOLNATION seasonings sprinkled on the album, but this record is a definite departure from that. Aaron's vocals are frantic and unhinged while maintaining perfect control, the guitar work by Eric and Zack is groovy, thrashy and pristine and Isaac's drumming is powerful and lays a heavy heartbeat for this new breath that's been pumped into our musical lungs. The band brings serious heavy to this album and it's a fantastically refreshing listen. It covers a bunch of genres, but stays cohesive throughout. It absolutely warrants listening to. You should also check out the interview the Shit Talk guys did with Eric Stenman a few weeks back to get deeper into the band and the album. On this show, we discuss the new documentary film written and directed by musician and animal rights advocate Moby. The film is called Punk Rock Vegan Movie and spans a number of decades examining the ongoing relationship between the worlds of punk music and animal rights, and how punk ideology is associated with animal rights activism and veganism. The film premiered in January 2023 at the Slamdance Film Festival and is freely available to watch on Moby's YouTube channel. https://moby.com/news/punk-rock-vegan-movie/ The film, which is Moby's directorial debut, includes interviews with some of the biggest names in punk and rock history, like Ian Mackaye, HR, Dave Navarro, Ray Cappo, Andrew Hurley, Tony Kanal, Tim McIlrath, Water Schreifels, Dave Dictor, Derrick Green, Steve Ignorant, Theo Kogan, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Amy Lee, and Captain Sensible. Slamdance Film Festival wrote about the film: Moby tells the story of how punk rock became such a fertile and surprising breeding ground for vegan activism. It's also a call to action, unapologetically reminding people that in a deeply broken world it's incumbent upon each of us to stand up and fight intelligently, passionately, and loudly against injustice. Today I'm joined by Moby to discuss his film ‘Punk Rock Vegan Movie! The new documentary will have its world premiere and be the Opening Night film for the 2023 Slamdance Film Festival on January 20 in Park City, Utah. The film, which is Moby's directorial debut, is a passionate and stylistically idiosyncratic look at the ongoing relationship between the worlds of punk rock and animal rights. It includes interviews with some of the biggest names in punk and rock history, like Ian Mackaye, HR, Dave Navarro, Ray Cappo, Andrew Hurley, Tony Kanal, Tim McIlrath, Water Schreifels, Dave Dictor, Derrick Green, Steve Ignorant, Theo Kogan, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Amy Lee, and Captain Sensible. It's also a call to action, unapologetically reminding people that in a deeply broken world it's incumbent upon each of us to stand up and fight intelligently, passionately, and loudly against injustice. In the spirit of punk rock, Moby will be giving the film away for free following the Slamdance premiere. “'PUNK ROCK VEGAN MOVIE' was created to shine a light on the surprising and inspiring history of punk rock and animal rights, but also to remind people of the importance and desperate urgency of adopting the uncompromising ethics and actions of the original punk rock activists,” said Moby. “After it makes its world premiere at Slamdance, it's yours. It's my goal to give the movie away, as I can't in good conscience try to profit from what is essentially a labor of love and activism." On today's episode, I talk to musician Tim McIlrath of Rise Against. Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, Tim grew up about an hour outside Chicago in the suburbs where he started playing in punk bands. In 1999, Joe Principe and Dan Wieklinski formed Rise Against out of the break-up of their former band 88 Fingers Louie, and invited Tim to join. Though the early days were tumultuous, they persevered and released the Transistor Revolt EP a year later. And since those early days, the band has risen to international acclaim releasing albums on Fat Wreck Chords, Geffen, DGC/Interscope and their most current album, the Nowhere Generation II EP was just released on Loma Vista in June! Rise Against released their 9th full length studio album titled "Nowhere Generation" in June of 2021! Tim McIlrath from Rise Against joins Stryker on a really fun and entertaining episode of Tuna on Toast. Tim and Stryker discuss that it's been more than 20 years since the release of their album The Unraveling. Tim talks about his early goals for the band and how weird it was to finally declare that he is a professional musician. This leads into Tim telling Stryker all about his return to college during the pandemic...NorthEastern Illinois University! Tim is back in school going for his degree that he was so close to getting many years ago. Tim talks about meeting with his counselors and being recognized in his classes and which class has been the most difficult. Tim also mentions that some of his classes have helped him navigate this crazy time we live in. Tim then talks about how Rise Against met Fat Mike from NOFX and what led to him signing the band. Rise Against didn't have one show under their belt at the time! Tim also tells a great story of a meeting both he and Joe had with Fat Mike. The guys drove from Chicago to Detroit to chat with Mike. Many of their early shows they opened for Strung Out and Mad Caddies, NOFX and Sick of it All. Tim talks about the band going to a major label and what the band thought was going to happen professionally vs what actually happened. Stryker asks Tim about a show just before the pandemic in which Rise Against opened for the Misfits in Los Angeles. Tim then discusses why they covered the Misfits song "Hybrid Moment" for the Rise Against "Nowhere Sessions" EP as well as the song "Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. When discussing being the opening act so often early in the career of Rise Against, Tim said "the band you become has a lot to do with your introduction to the industry". The guys also talk about the future of Rise Against. Tim also gives wonderful advice when it comes to being a new band. Tim Mcllrath is a smart and talented dude full of an energy that is absolutely infectious... And as Tim says, there will always be things to Rise Against which means we should have lots of great music from the guys for many years to come. Sit back and enjoy another great episode of Tuna on Toast.
Guitarists Tim McIlrath and Zach Blair enjoy tenacious tones with rock's mightiest tag team—Gibsons into Marshalls—aided by a few everyman effects and one mythical stomp. Rise Against rose out of Chicago around Y2k on the back of roaring Gatling-gun guitars, blast-beat rhythms, and defiant, sharp-tongued social commentary. The band's first pair of albums—2001's The Unraveling and 2003's Revolutions Per Minute—are blistering bangers rooted in traditional hardcore chaos, spiced up with fist-pumping, boot-stomping choruses. Siren Song of the Counter Culture in 2004 was their major-label debut, on Geffen. That album highlighted a broadening hardcore sound buffed up with more melody. (Think '90s Bad Religion messaging cloaked in early 2000s AFI harmonies.) However catchy they became, their message still ripped like a dagger. Appealing to a bigger audience with bouncier hooks, acoustic numbers, and string overdubs earned them their first splash into the Billboard 200 albums chart (eventually certified gold in the U.S.). Elevated visibility scored them back-to-back platinum albums—2006's The Sufferer & the Witness and 2008's Appeal to Reason, and that momentum carried over to a continued residency in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 with 2011's Endgame, 2014's The Black Market, and 2017's Wolves. And 2021's Nowhere Generation represents a maturing, melodic hardcore outfit that continues to stand up for what they believe in and still provide the revolutionary attitude to back it up. The continual growth and evolution of their melodic-hardcore formula has allowed them to roll into mainstream airwaves like a Trojan horse. Newcomers who were enamored with anthemic choruses ("Savior," "The Prayer of the Refugee," "Nowhere Generation," "Give It All," "I Don't Want To Be Here Anymore") quickly became dancing disciples because of the band's knack for earworms. The twin-guitar team of singer Tim McIlrath and lead guitarist Zach Blair welcomed PG down to Birmingham, Alabama's Avondale Brewing Company to see how their simple-but-stinging https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-rise-against (setups have morphed since 2015). This is the second time I've had the pleasure of talking with Tim this year. And just like the first, you can watch it here. Rise Against have been at the forefront of socially conscious punk for the last 20 years. On the release of their 9th album, I thought it was a perfect time to get lead singer Tim McIlrath back on the radio, to Take 5. He's one of the most articulate musicians I know, and our conversations in the past have always been rich ones. Rise Against's new album is about the failure of the American dream, the notion that every generation will be better than the last, is a thing of the past. Across punk, protest, and anthem, hear Tim McIlrath's “America”, and the artists who have been singing this song for decades. Black Flag - “American Waste” Operation Ivy - “Freeze Up” John Lennon - “Working Class Hero Descendents - “Suburban Home” Bruce Springsteen - “Born In The USA”

Rise Against's Tim McIlrath sits down with Kyle Meredith to discuss Nowhere Generation, the Chicago punk band's ninth album. The frontman talks about who the Nowhere Generation is and who these songs are directed at, how the American Dream and what it means and stands for has changed, and what the older generations have done to the Earth and society. McIlrath also takes us back to their mainstream breakthrough, Swing Life Away, and how it gave the band permission to write softer songs, like this LP's Forfeit, their eventual plans for Ghost Note Symphonies Vol. 2, and the hope that ultimately grows from their song's dark places. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
EITM interviews Tim McIlrath
On the new episode of "Who I Am," Rise Against frontman Tim McIlrath takes host Steve Baltin through McIlrath's punk rock upbringing in Chicago and how that made him the activist/singer he is today.
Rise Against singer Tim McIlrath talks about his new record "Nowhere Generation," what happens when capitalism crumbles, how it will feel to have the pendulum swing back, his first guitar, when drums are the riffs and guitars are the rhythm, how he writes songs and how growing up in Chicago on riot grrl music changed his perspective on punk rock. Tim appears in my recent documentary on women and punk rock which you can watch on YouTube.

His genuine nature and overall dignified wisdom really contrasts with your hosts and just basically shows what hokey-pokey, okey-smokey, bucktoothed farthole, two-bit, sheep shit, boring, lazy, Patrick Swayze, mudhole stompin', Styx, chicken fried, cut-offs, flip-flops, mullet havin', knife weildin', small town gossipin', pimple poppin', gum smackin', lake draggin'. knife fight havin', threes company watchin', stupid name havin', premature baldin', cross eyed, jacuzzi water drinkin', weekend warrior, crooked lawyer, fedora wearin', over sharin', motor mouth, from the south, Don Knotts, Big Lots, jean shorts, pillow forts, Voldemort, Godsmack, Nickleback, give the dog a bone, dollar store, food stamp, leave that thing alone, cussin', fussin', diaper wearin', colicky, shitty, itty-bitty-titty-committee, cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed, stupid, worthless, goddamn, freeloading sons of bitches, big mouth, know-it-all, asshole, jerk, (you forgot) ugly, lazy, disrespectful, "no dad, what about you!?", type of dipfucks that they are. They've kept us waiting for quite a while - but now, after four years, Rise Against's new record "Nowhere Generation" is out on June 4th! We talked to singer Tim McIlrath about working on the album, following political & social pressure versus being yourself, touring and how much they miss being with their fans - and also about going back to school (virtually, of course) and making the most of that last year of lockdown and pandemic. Enjoy!
Rise Against lead singer, Tim McIlrath, joins Tom to talk music, Chicago, activism and more!
This week on The Hardcore Humanism Podcast we are talking with musician, singer and songwriter Tim McIlrath of the punk rock band Rise Against. Rise Against is known for being very outspoken on a range of social justice issues such as animal rights and environmentalism. One of the themes of their new album Nowhere Generation is the disparities that exist in our society. There are intense disparities that exist in this world for people based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and economic resources. So not everyone gets the same access to education, health care, jobs, healthy food and clean air among other things. One of the core principles of humanism and humanistic psychology is that all people have value, and it is our job as individuals and as a society to help people realize their potential in life. So these disparities that exist run counter to what we hope for in a humanistic society. And then the question is when we face these types of disparities – and we see that there are systems in place that interfere with our ability and the ability of others to achieve purpose in life, what do we do?McIlrath talks about addressing the issue of disparity on two fronts. The first is the concept of agency – empowering people to find their purpose in life and work to achieve it no matter what obstacles they face. This is a very core tenet of punk rock – the idea that our ideas, hopes and dreams matter, even if we are marginalized in some way. And the second front McIlrath talks about is taking on the system – identifying and challenging the structures that exist that interfere with people having equal opportunity to live the lives they want. And what’s particularly important is that we can do both. We can work both to find the agency to build the life we want and to change the system and structures that hold people back. And these concepts that McIlrath discusses are so very much in line with core humanistic principles – that everyone has value. And it is our goal as individuals to work towards our purpose in life and to help others do the same.*****Newsletter: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/GBmf0iU/HardcoreHumanismSignUpInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hardcorehumanism/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HardcoreHumanism/Twitter: https://twitter.com/hardcorhumanismLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hardcore-humanism

Forged in the Chicago punk scene of the late ‘90s, Rise Against seemed an unlikely candidate for mainstream success. After signing to a major label in 2003, Rise Against went on to release six albums that reached the Billboard 200 — five of which charted in the top ten. In this episode we speak with vocalist/guitarist Tim McIlrath and guitarist Zach Blair about sheltering in place, being political, following your passion, Zach’s tenure in the band Gwar, and much more.

Sidekick Kato was a major force on the Chicago music scene in the 1990s, a true "band's band." I never thought I'd see the day when Sidekick Kato reunited, and yet... here we are. Nowadays, Rise Against are a hugely successful arena rock band, but they still retain a connection to their humble hardcore rock roots as this conversation with the band's singer Tim McIlrath undoubtably proves. They've grown and evolved over the years, but essentially they're the same group they always were: just a bunch of down to earth dudes driven by melodic punk rock music with a message. From growing up in the Chicago punk scene and playing in hardcore bands with Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz to signing with Fat Wreck Chords and recording with Bill Stevenson, it all gets covered in Episode 041 of Life In The Stocks - including the recent suicides of Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell, both of whom Tim called friends. All in all, an inspiring talk with a very inspiring artist.Follow Matt Stocks on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page here: www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocks See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
