Yet, God's discipline is rooted in mercy, shaping us for our good.In this podcast, Angie and Susie explore how surrendering control and trusting His process can transform our pain into purpose. Join us as we dive into what it truly means to let go and let God work.Romans 12:19 (NIV)Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.https://livesteadyon.com/https://susiecrosby.com/https://www.logos.com/https://enduringword.com/https://www.wordhippo.com/https://www.biblegateway.com/https://www.blueletterbible.org/Gottlob Schrenk, “Ἐκδικέω, Ἔκδικος, Ἐκδίκησις,” ed. Chrstina Froemlla was a 30 year-old special ed teacher who worked at Downers Grove south high school in Chicago Illinois. Christina was 28, married to a wonderful husband, owned her own home and worked a job she'd been working to achieve since 19. And just a couple months after her dream destination wedding in Italy, Chrstina and her new husband were pulled over by Downers Grove police and Christina was arrested for the s*xual abuse of her 15 year old student. Chrstina denied these claims, saying that she wasn't into the child, the child was into HER. She claims she tried to break it off so many times but the child always manipulated her back into staying and that he was her “crazy stalker”. And even when police read aloud a message sent on Christina's phone to the child saying “I love having s*x with you”, Christina still tried to defend her case and would bring the police on a wild ride of lies, lust, and abuse of authority. In today's conversation, we received wisdom and insight from Dr. Steve Porter about all things spiritual formation and transformation – in personal, pastoral and church contexts. Steve's work at the intersection of philosophy, theology and psychology means that he brings multilayered insight into the conversation around growth and transformation. Shaped and informed by the spirituality of Paul and the insight of folks like Dallas Willard and Eugene Peterson, Steve reminds us of the spiritual realities available to us as persons in Christ. He encourages us to be aware of God's presence, engaging in spiritual practices as windows that open ourselves to God. He also shares how we can internalize the love of God and how we as the church can support one another in making the invisible love of God visible and tangible, especially if we have struggled to experience that love in human relationships. We're excited that Steve will be joining us at Regent in the summer to teach a class on Cultivating Formation-Minded Pastors and Churches (July 21-25). We'd love for you to join us!BioDr. Steven L. Porter is the Senior Research Fellow and Executive Director of the Martin Institute for Christianity and Culture at Westmont College. He is also an affiliate professor of theology and spiritual formation at Biola University's Institute for Spiritual Formation and Rosemead School of Psychology. Dr. Porter earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Southern California under the mentorship of Dallas Willard and holds an M.Phil. in philosophical theology from the University of Oxford. His academic work focuses on Christian spiritual formation, the doctrine of sanctification, and the integration of psychology and theology. Additionally, he serves as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care.Publications ReferencedSteven L. I love a good record store, and for this episode, I’m focused one of the greatest record stores in Chicago history: The Flip Side. The Flip Side: Where Chicago Rocked is a new book about the birth, innovation, success and eventual end of the Flip Side chain. To talk about the book, I’m joined by co-author Ken Churilla, who wrote the book with Flip Side owners Carl and Larry Rosenbaum, and Chicago radio legend Jeff Schwartz, who led industry-changing marketing efforts for the chain. If you were around for the Flip Side days, you may also know him as “Mr. Cheap.” We met at Scooby’s (4319 Prince St, Downers Grove, IL 60515), one of Jeff’s favorite places. Sure enough, he was right: Scooby’s fries are fantastic. If you’re interested in music, record stores, entrepreneurship, radio or creative thinking, you’re going to dig this episode. ## Car Con Carne sponsored by Easy Automation: easy-automation.net Transform your living space with cutting-edge home automation. It's highly likely the burnout you and I experience, the frazzled nerves and frayed edges, are a result of taking on jobs God never intended for us, trying to be superwomen or supermen, thinking we can be all things to all people, never saying, “It's not my job.” And amid all those urgent voices, you and I have shortchanged what is important: the Word of God and prayer. You cannot allow others—no matter how well intentioned—to cause you to try to be or do what you're not supposed to be or do. You may disappoint them, but if you're going to be effective for God, you have to avoid the tendency to try to be all things to all people. It doesn't mean a life of ease with no pressures. I'm sure the hours will sometimes still be long, and exhaustion will still be a part of your life. But the more you submerge yourself into God's Word, the less frantic you'll be, the more you'll know what God wants you to do and what he doesn't, the more peaceful and calm you can be as you face your heavy schedule. In his booklet, The Tyranny of the Urgent, Charles Hummel has a suggestion, which I think is excellent. He suggests in addition to that daily time of getting to know God, you set aside one hour a week for spiritual inventory, to evaluate what's happened over the past week and plan for the week ahead. To make certain your to-do list has the important things at the top.[1] To help you and me in that process, I've written a simple guideline to use for that spiritual inventory. If you are serious about getting your priorities in line, about spending time getting to know God, about weeding out the unimportant things on your list of priorities and putting God's Word and prayer at the top of your list, then you may find this guide for a weekly spiritual inventory helpful. You'll find it here. I hope many of you will consider using this each week. I believe it will be a great help in getting you out of crisis mode and into a more God-centered lifestyle. --- [1] Hummel, C. E. (1967). The Tyranny of the Urgent. Jesus could say at the end of his short earthly life, “I have finished the work which you gave me to do.” But I wonder how many of us will be able to say that. Are you doing what God has given you to do, or are you distracted and burned-out by trying to do urgent things that are not truly important? Though Jesus did much during his short earthly life, he didn't do everything everybody wanted him to do. He didn't heal all the sick, he didn't reach everyone. When so much was left undone, how could Jesus say he had finished his work? In his pamphlet, The Tyranny of the Urgent, Charles Hummel puts it so well, “Here is the secret of Jesus' life and work for God: He prayerfully waited for his Father's instructions and for the strength to follow them. Jesus...discerned the Father's will day by day in a life of prayer. By this means he warded off the urgent and accomplished the important.”[1] If you want to be free from burnout, free from being victimized by the loud voices of urgency that often surround you, you must remember what Jesus told us: If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free (John 8:31-32). A life of prayer and a life of daily abiding in the Word of God is our key. How easy it is to let these truly important things be shoved aside by all those urgent voices. Urgent things usually have deadlines and time frames, while important things may not. Therefore, it's quite easy to do the urgent things, but leave the important things undone. Could it be you need to find balance in your life by making the main thing the main thing and not allowing those urgent voices to dictate your schedule? And at the top of your important list should be the commitment to spend substantial time in your pursuit of knowing the living God. --- [1] Hummel, C. E. (1967). The Tyranny of the Urgent. Downers Grove, IL; Intervarsity Christian Fellowship.

In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul affirms both singleness and marriage as good options for Christians. But when he is asked about issues of separation and divorce, Paul applies the teaching of Jesus and the heart of God in a way that offers both grace and truth. There is hope for every marriage to stay together, there is hope for victims, and there is hope for life after divorce. The sermon today is titled "Body Matters." Last weekend in New Hampshire, amid the revelry of the Schilling Beer Co. Oktoberfest – a festival I'll say should be on your radar for next year – I got together with some brewer owners from around the country to record this conversation. There is a lot of uncertainty in the industry these days and folks are trying to figure out the path forward in real time. Talking with and listening to smart people offers up a lot of perspective. Guests Peter Kiley is Brewmaster and Co-Owner of Monday Night Brewing, and is an award winning brewmaster, winemaker and distiller from Atlanta, Georgia. From Monday Night's inception, Kiley's creative vision, recipe development and multifaceted approach to alcohol production have set the groundwork for the brewery's worldwide notoriety. Kiley is a founding member of the MBAA Georgia chapter, a member of The Hop Quality Group, a published scientific author and has presented at both The World Brewing Congress and The Craft Brewers Conference. Tom Beckmann is the Owner and Head Brewer of Goldfinger Brewing Company in Downers Grove, Il. Upon graduating from the World Brewing Academy Master Brewer's Diploma program through Siebel Institute of Technology and Doemens Akademie in Munich, Germany, Tom became a production brewer at Lagunitas Brewing and later worked several years as a pub brewer at Emmett's Brewing Company. He established Goldfinger Brewing, an exclusively lager beer producer, in the summer of 2020 and has acute experience with lager brewing as well as what it is like to scale up a small, lager-centric, craft brewery. Jeremy Grinkey, co-founder at Everywhere Beer Co has spent 20 years in the alcohol industry. Having spent half of that time making wine on the Central Coast of California and the remainder of that time managing beer production. Before co-founding Everywhere with a few industry colleagues, he was the Director of Production at The Bruery. Everywhere Beer Co was founded in 2022 and is focused on growing its community and delivering fresh beer as well as esoteric offerings to its dedicated fans. In this episode, Kim Dickson talks with Dr. Nijay Gupta about the New Testament women he highlights in his Book Tell Her Story: How Women Led, Taught, and Ministered in the Early Church. Women who are little known to the average contemporary Christian come alive as Nijay discusses the world in which these remarkable women lived, served, and suffered on behalf of Jesus. Nijay describes the importance of letter carriers in the Roman world and the significance of Paul choosing Phoebe for this important work. He also discusses the translation and theological issues that hid Junia's apostleship as a woman. Bio Dr. Nijay K. Gupta is professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary. He has written or edited over twenty books including A Beginner's Guide to New Testament Studies, Paul and the Language of Faith, and the award-winning and bestselling Tell Her Story: How Women Led, Taught, and Ministered in the Early Church. Gupta is also co-editor of the Dictionary of Paul and His Letters, and he is a senior translator for the New Living Translation. Related Resources: Find Nijay Gupta at his blog. In the 335th episode of Expositors Collective, Mike sits down with Pastor Craig Babcock to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities of preaching through the book of Proverbs in an expositional manner. Both seasoned and novice preachers often find Proverbs challenging to preach (and Mike is no exception!) However, Craig, drawing from his PhD research, shares a transformative perspective on the book. Instead of viewing Proverbs as a collection of isolated maxims, Craig presents it as a progressive journey through a life—gaining knowledge and wisdom, being taught, and eventually becoming a teacher. This fresh understanding can be incredibly valuable for anyone looking to preach through Proverbs or simply wanting to deepen their grasp of this profound biblical book. In addition to this, the conversation delves into raising up the next generation of Bible teachers, offering solid insights and practical advice. And, for a bit of fun, Craig shares the unexpected benefits that come from wearing a suit and tie. Whether you're a preacher, a student of the Bible, or just curious about Proverbs, you're sure to enjoy this engaging and informative discussion. Craig Babcock attended Oregon State University and received a B.S. in Anthropology. He also holds an M.A. in Biblical Studies from Calvary Chapel University. Currently, Craig is a Doctoral Candidate at Liberty University in pursuit of a Ph.D. in Biblical Exposition. Pastor Craig has a heart for the local church and the Lord's people. Growing up in South Denver, Craig has spent the last 15 years of ministry as a pastor, church planter, and coach. Prior to being called into the ministry, Craig served in the Navy and in Law Enforcement. Craig's central focus of teaching is the Word of God and allowing the Lord to work in the lives of those who trust in Christ. Craig married his wonderful wife Christy in 2002, and they have three children. Craig enjoys running, being outdoors, and going on adventures. Resources for Proverbs - Ansberry, Christopher B.
