A Twice 5 Miles Radio podcast hosted by James Navé In this episode, The Medicine of Talking Plants, I welcome herbalist Julie Hatch for a fascinating exploration of plant medicine and its healing powers. Julie shares her adventures from a life-changing trip to the Amazon jungle in her early 20s, including a close encounter with a massive anaconda. In the show's second part, I contemplate the musicality of natural sounds, reflecting on a recent news report of the Taliban banning music and burning instruments. Tune in to uncover the mysteries of nature and the power of sound.
"Don't let the pain of addiction outweigh the pain of recovery." Special guest Paul Pulsipher beautifully expresses this point in this episode. Recovery is painful? This may be a new concept for some and a familiar one for others. The answer is, "Yes, it can be." It's often a process and depending upon the addiction, your brain can change, you may experience withdrawals, or unbury deep pain or trauma that needs to be addressed. The one thing all addictions share in common is the necessity of adopting a lifestyle change which can show up in adopting not only a new mindset, but new relationships, new and healthier habits, and/or new interests/hobbies. Anything new takes us out of the familiar and comfortable...even if it is good. Paul and I discuss our experiences with different types of addictions, what we have and continue to learn, and our healing processes. Paul has been clean from pornography addiction for 3 years, and I am currently recovering after 20+ years of struggling with a food addiction. Since we are both Christain, we share our experiences from a Christain stand point. This is important because there is an unspoken expectation of perfection when it comes to being Christain. It's important for Christains and non-Christains alike to acknowledge that Christains are human beings with weaknesses, experience temptations and hardships, and commit sins. The Christain community is not exempt from addiction. DISCLAIMER: I have marked this episode "explicit" because we do discuss adult topics such as pornography, masterbation, death, and sexual intimacy in marriage as it relates to pornography addiction. Julie Phillips Hatch is a pediatric nurse practitioner, an acupuncturist, a parenting specialist, and a mom. She is a traditional western medicine practitioner, turned alternative holistic practitioner. Her passion has always been helping kids. She spent many years working in pediatrics, first in pediatric intensive care, then in neonatal intensive care. Eventually, her focus shifted, and she found her way into the realm of eastern medicine and holistic health. She has extensive training in western medicine as well as in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Julie finds that blending both traditional western medicine with traditional eastern medicine is ideal in her work to promote health. She finds there is great merit to both approaches. She believes that in parenting, following a more holistic path not only makes sense in working with kids, but also makes parenting life a whole lot easier. Living according to the natural order of things simply works better and allows life to unfold in an easier, more natural way. But it helps in centering yourself, not letting your emotions take over that are trying to get out of here where your emotions are thinking about your emotions and your fears, and your worries, and your anger and all that. But to be centered here, and to breathe, and to focus on the breath, and let try which helps to let those emotions go and then come back and deal with them when you're in a better place. So it's more responding to emotions and reacting to emotions also, Thoughts on Breathing I've just started doing an online program with a Buddhist teacher who's all about breathing, and the whole thing, the whole course is on breathing, I only just started. So I can't tell you everything that it says. But the breath has any app that uses breathing and teaches you how to just close your eyes and breathe and pay attention to the breathing. And it takes practice at first you know, you're even when the app is talking to you. You're hearing all the chatter in your head. But with practice, they teach you to learn how to go back to your breath. And that's the fundamentals I think mindfulness is one of the basics. Give them your feedback. Listen, and pay attention to what they're saying and what they're feeling. I have heard that bullies are victims of being bullied themselves, certainly. If your child is being bullied, if you can convince them and help them to learn how to stand up for themselves. I know a lot of our kids benefit from martial arts for many, many reasons. But one of them is that they can stand up for themselves in a very healthy way. And it adds a lot of confidence usually too. Martial arts are really helpful in all kinds of ways, probably for all kids. We know our kids are unique, wonderful, frustrating, always-evolving beings. As parents … and as teachers, aunts, uncles, adults who care about the planet … how can we know what our children need to be healthier and to thrive in the world? Rates of depression and anxiety are rising in our kids, and consciously awakening parents are looking for new tools. https://www.juliephillipshatch.com/ Parenting Expert Holistic Health Practitioner Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Do you sometimes wonder if you're doing the right thing for your child—making the right choices for them? Are you struggling with how to handle their challenging behavior? Are the time outs and punishments not working any more and you don't know what to do next? Are you worried about your child because of their behavior at home or getting in trouble at school? I get it. I've been there. I know what it's like to raise a child with ADHD. I know what it's like to be a working mother. I've raised three kids through divorce. And none of it is easy! Parenting is not easy. But it doesn't have to be a struggle. I am Julie Hatch, a licensed pediatric nurse practitioner and a holistic health practitioner of Chinese Medicine. I have over 30 years of working as a nurse practitioner, and over 30 years of raising three awesome kids! I started my parent coaching business, Mums on a Mission (M.O.M.), because I saw an urgent need to help parents understand and handle child-raising challenges, and to help them connect with their kids in a new way that takes the stress and strain out of parenting.. Join me every Tuesday as I explore the many elements and questions around parenting. You will hear about a new topic each week with new approaches and insights into the art of parenting- which include topics about not only your child's well-being, but your own as well! A Parenting Revolution for Higher Evolution is a provocative read for consciously awakening parents who are searching for an easier way to raise their kids in today's complex, high pressure, rapidly changing world. The current direction of kids' health with rising rates of depression and anxiety, demands that something change in how we raise our kids, because right now something isn't working. Kids and adults alike are looking to their external world for answers to their problems. More money, a nicer car, more friends on Facebook, a better spouse or partner, a better body, drugs, alcohol – none of which will bring happiness for longer than a nanosecond. Lasting answers and solutions come from within. A parenting revolution begs the case for parents to raise their children from the inside out. Focus on the inner spirit of the child and the outside will naturally flourish. Here is a guide that shows you how to discover what your individual and unique child needs from you to not only survive but to thrive in the world. A Parenting Revolution blends the wisdom of eastern medicine with contemporary western culture. It is a deep dive into holistically understanding and raising your child. Here in your hands is the catalyst we need for higher human evolution.

Most parents have followed one of these paths in parenting their children: Imposed their vision or ego on the child of what that child should do –whether it's get good grades, study for a specific career, play sports or music, attend a preferred college, etc.Tried so hard to ease their child's path that the child never learns to fend for him or herself, feels entitled, or becomes simply unmotivatedInflicts their own fears on the child so that the child either rebels or multiplies the fearsCorrects or criticizes the child to fulfill their own needs for outer appearances and expectations and stimulates the child's feeling of never being “enough.” Today's special guest Julie Phillips Hatch says there is another way. And that is to release your own needs and expectations and guide your child to follow his or her own path based on the child's inner spirt, intuition and natural inclination. In her half-manifesto-and-half-practical guidebook A Parenting Revolution for Higher Evolution: Raising Resilient, Responsible, Compassionate Kids from the Inside Out, Julie makes the casethat children parented from this standout are far better capable of becoming happy, stable, fully self-realized and empathetic adults who contribute to a better and more highly evolved world—whatever path they may follow. Julie knows kids. As a mother of three, a pediatric nurse practitioner, pediatric acupuncturist, a parenting coach, and host of the “Mums on a Mission” podcast, she has devoted her life to some aspect of healing and growing capable children. Seeing the impact of so many poor parenting choices, and the suffering, bullying or unfulfilled children who result from them, Julie felt she had to speak up.
Holistic Parenting. What does that even mean? I chat with Julie Hatch, a pediatric nurse practitioner, acupuncturist, and holistic child health expert in this episode. Julie blends her knowledge and experience in Western medicine with Eastern medicine studies to help parents using a holistic approach. Julie and I dive into what holistic parenting looks like, How to apply it, and how it benefits us as SAHMs. Julie's book, "A Parenting Revolution for Higher Evolution: Raising resilient, responsible, compassionate kids from the inside out," hits shelves on February 24th but you can buy it digitally now. Julie's passion to help struggling parents comes from a place of understanding and awareness that we live in a society filled with pressures we aren't taught to handle. If we know better, we can do better. Our conversation touches on the indoctrination we are all accustomed to, which dictates how we parent in this new Era. But, what if we approached parenting the way it was approached for hundreds of years prior? Would we be teaching our children skills to be more resilient, responsible, and compassionate? I had Julie come on today, so we have the tools and knowledge needed to best raise the future generation. My hope is that Julie can help YOU feel more confident as a mother. Enjoy. Julie Hatch Julie Hatch: I am a parenting mentor and creator of 'Mums on a Mission: Consciously Connecting with Our Kids'. I am a pediatric nurse practitioner, an acupuncturist and a Mom of 3 boys. Through my business I work with mothers who are struggling with the stress of daily conflicts, yelling, repeated 'time outs', to get them beyond the behavior and to a place of calm and confidence in their parenting. www.juliephillipshatch.com Listen to another #12minconvo
Julie is on a mission to help mothers consciously connect with their kids and my interview with her was interesting at every level. Julie couldn't express it enough that the inner essence and spirit of our children are what drives who they are, and as parent’s, it is vital that we 'parent' to their strengths. We talked about how placing bandaids on any continued challenging behavior will only push those issues out to the future, creating bigger challenges for the child as they get older. Consistency was something Julie couldn't stress enough, and that picking our battles are key components to educating and teaching our children so that they can thrive in our communities in the best way possible. We also talked about the importance of creating a safe and supportive relationship with our children in the home-- when they are young and how vital that is. Julie and I talked more about why parents need to understand that a child's life inside the home is their only reference of how to be because parents are essentially their mirror. They absorb our energy, our language, and our actions. When I brought up the subject of nutrition, Julie seemed extremely grateful because she shared that most people don't realize how important nutrition plays a role in a child's behavior, and how it goes far beyond just sugar and caffeine. As a pediatric nurse practitioner for many years, as well as the mother of three grown boys, Julie was so passionate about how the present moment is what matters the most, and seeing our children in the present moment for who they are and what they are bringing to the moment, provides opportunity for deeper connection with the child. And that having a deeper connection can help them better navigate their way through the ups and downs of life. And when parents allow themselves to do this, that’s when they find that parenting can be less of a struggle. My interview with Julie was so informative and inspirational! www.juliephillipshatch.com
