When an FDA inspector showed up to inspect my student's herbal product business, he flagged her elderberry echinacea tincture as dangerous, and cited Google AI as his research source. That's where this episode starts, and it gets crazier from there.This herbalist has done the work, and played by all the rules. She documented everything from seed to final sale. I've covered three British herbalists so far on this podcast, and each has made a notable contribution to the development of botany and apothecary practice in Britain. This week, we're going to meet Maud Grieve, whose contribution took a different form. Yes, she wrote a lot about plants. She wrote A Modern Herbal, in fact. Yet she also contributed to the wartime efforts of the First World War in the realm of medicinal plants. She's perhaps not as well-known as the other three herbal writers I've featured: Elizabeth Blackwell, William Turner, and Nicholas Culpeper. She didn't illustrate her herbal, like Blackwell. Master Gardener, Soozi Pline, speaks with local herbal practitioner, Nancy Williams. Nancy grew up on her family's farm in Marion County and began learning about herbs and natural remedies as a child. She studied with Phyllis D. Light -  4th generation herbalist and health educator in North Alabama. Harvesting plants and herbs she grows on her property, Nancy makes teas, tinctures, salves, and syrup remedies. In this episode of The Herbalist Hour, I'm joined by herbalist Laura Madelaine, with guest co-host Rosalee de la Forêt. Laura shares her journey from nursing to herbalism, following an intuitive calling that completely changed her path. We talk about bioregional Ayurveda, working with the seasons, growing herbs, and what it's like running an herbal nursery and CSA. We also explore her work supporting mothers, her Backyard Harvest project, and how plants can guide us back into relationship with the land. “I have all these learned behaviors, and … was seeing them play out in my own family, with my own children, and thinking about the generational transference of hurt and wounds and wanting to do what I could to minimize that.” – Carrie Levine Certified nurse-midwife and functional medicine practitioner Carrie Levine has had a lifelong interest in deep exploration. She completed the Hoffman Process in 2024, having learned about patterns years earlier from reading Bob Hoffman’s book, No One Is to Blame. She truly understood Bob Hoffman’s realization that “No one is to blame.” Self-described as weird when young, Carrie explored a variety of unusual passions as a teen, including challenging activities in nature. In early adulthood, Carrie led women through outdoor experiential educational adventures, guiding them to become skilled and empowered in a variety of settings. Later, as she embarked on a new career in medicine, Carrie drew parallels between supporting women in nature and supporting them in the labor room. She found the skills and presence she’d gained earlier also empowered women during childbirth. Sharing her journey, Carrie highlights how she came to learn about herself. She is clear that she must be aligned with her Spiritual Self and reflects on how she doesn’t do well when she isn’t aligned. She now counsels her patients that optimal health can only come when we are aligned with our core self. Carrie refers many women to the Hoffman Process. She sees that women, especially parents, need to step away from their everyday lives to do deep healing work.
