    SAHM Life Isn't Glamorous

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 13, 2022 24:04

In this episode, I want to remind everyone that SAHM life truly isn't glamorous. It is frustrating, disgusting, overwhelming, and challenging every single day. You're saying “yes” to so much more than the “fun” aspects of being home with your children. The internet has a way of wrapping the modern-day role of homemaking into a pretty little package that looks quiet, cozy, neat, calm, and beautiful. Are there moments of that? Absolutely! But a full-time mother's role is definitely NOT neat, calm, or quiet. Let's have a chat about the importance of understanding what we are saying yes to and why you chose this role. Warning: Many poop stories that will surely give you a belly laugh in this one, my friend. ------------Check the brand-new blog: www.mominprocess.com/blogJoin the Mom: In-Process Community:Facebook InstagramWebsite Don't forget to check out the latest swag!Get your Mom: In-Process merch today www.mominprocess.com/shop

    Scrolling to Connect VS. Compare

In this episode, I wanted to dive into the topic of scrolling. Yes, scrolling. It sure feels like this topic is discussed a lot, doesn't it? Maybe that's because it's a topic where so many women struggle! We use it as an escape while justifying how we stay connected as isolated SAHMs. It's time to ask yourself if you're scrolling to connect truly, or if you're scrolling to compare. Compare what you have or don't have. Compare what you believe or don't believe. Compare what you feel or don't feel. Compare how you look, how your house looks, and how your family looks in the eyes of others. Social media can be a wonderful tool to reach people all across the world. But, it's time to ask yourself the “why” behind the thumb scroll. ------------Check the brand-new blog: www.mominprocess.com/blogJoin the Mom: In-Process Community:Facebook InstagramWebsite Don't forget to check out the latest swag!Get your Mom: In-Process merch today www.mominprocess.com/shop

I'm over the moon to bring personal finance expert Jen Smith to this community in hopes of providing you with yet another awesome resource for those tough problems you're trying to tackle in life. As SAHMs, we often manage our households on a single income. I'm always looking for ways to save a buck (preferably two) and cut back on spending while still trying to live a full life at the moment without feeling consumed with guilt when it comes to actually spending money. Is it wise to always buy cheap items? Where do we start with a basic budget? How do you navigate tough conversations around spending habits when an individual's upbringing determines their perspective on money? Can you live an abundant, full life while being frugal? What does it mean to be “frugal” anyways? All of these questions (and more) are answered in this educational and insightful podcast episode. Grab your cozy beverage! This episode is all about shifting our mindset and negative thoughts in order to be more fulfilled. We all have the never-ending “to-do list,” whether it's sitting on your counter, posted on the fridge, or built up in your mind. Valuing your self-worth based on your productivity will absolutely lead to low self-esteem, de-value your role, and lead to mom burn-out at an astronomical rate. Trust me; I've been there. One of the fastest ways to find joy and fulfillment in your day is by shifting your focus from what you didn't accomplish that day to what you DID accomplish. Our accomplishments often don't align with our to-do lists as SAHMs, but that doesn't mean our efforts and intentions are any less valuable or worthy of pride and positive vibes. Are you basing your joy and measuring whether or not you had a good day by how many things you were able to check off “the list” that day? Trust me girl; I've been there. It's Okay to Need a Man

As little girls, we want to be rescued. We want to be the damsel in distress, the princess twirling in her pretty dress. Who do we picture rescuing us? The strong, confident, capable, masculine man!Modern (extreme) feminism has come along to say we no longer need a man. They tell us, we are 100% equal and that “anything they can do, I can do better.” The honest truth is, we can't. Now, don't get me wrong. I absolutely 1,000% consider myself a feminist! I believe in equal opportunity and freedom of choice. I take so much pride in being able to CHOOSE my role as a SAHM. However, I also find pride in having found a partner who helps support me in this role which we've chosen is best for our family. He makes my life better, easier in some ways, and more joyful. My goal for this episode is to debunk the idea that needing a man is weak. I want to show the perspective of a strong woman who is proud to rely on a strong man. There is so much value in a relationship where each partner can lean into their masculine and feminine roles. As a society, these partnerships need to be celebrated, not shunned. Men enrich our lives, provide support in different ways, and, let's be honest…help us open that pickle jar when we can't quite get it ourselves.BOOKS AND PODCASTS REFERENCEDWild at Heart by John Eldredge https://www.orderofman.com/------------Join the Mom: In-Process Community:Facebook InstagramWebsite Don't forget to check out the latest swag! Get your Mom: In-Process merch today www.mominprocess.com/shop

Mamas! As you know, we changed the name of this community from “Mama Mindset” to “Mom: In-Process.” I discuss the reason for that change in Episode 103, “New Name, Same Game.” The short version of the change is that I found out “Mama Mindset” is a registered trademark and owned by another woman wanting to build her own business that focuses on helping mamas. The owner of that trademark is Anik Cockroft. So, after my two-second pity party, I decided I needed to meet this woman and have her on the show. As it turns out, she's truly amazing, and the conversation we have goes deep into mindset and motherhood, as well as the laughable journey in how our worlds have collided in such a positive and beautiful way.She is a Board Certified Pediatrician, Sports medicine Physician, writer, and mama of 2. She stepped away from her career to focus on motherhood and empowering mamas using her experience in the medical industry, personal journey in motherhood, and deep work she has done in mindset and personal development. I'm so glad our worlds have come together and that I followed my instinct to meet her. Anik is a one-in-a-million type woman, and I'm grateful to have aligned with her. As women, we can truly create change in the world when we come together and collaborate in an open, honest, and vulnerable way. I'm incredibly excited to introduce you to my wonderful friend Nicole Seegmiller, a homeschooling mama to 8 (yes, you read that right) beautiful kids ages almost 15 to just over 1. I often talk on the podcast about having mentors and people we look up to, and Nicole is my inspirational mama friend. I'm constantly asking myself, “What would Nicole do?”. “How would Nicole handle this situation?” And, if I'm really in a bind, I talk to her in person or send her a message, and she is always willing to help in any way she can. In this episode, we talk about ALL THINGS mom-life. We talk about her background (she's brilliant by the way) and how her education and experiences have played a role in motherhood and homeschooling. We talk about the importance of diversity in our communities, which we are able to provide as full-time moms. We talk about the beauty of homeschooling and how she decided to educate their children at home. Nicole shares with me her tips and tricks for meal planning, home management, and the roles and duties her and her husband play in their household. Nicole and her husband have three businesses between the two of them, so there are pros and cons of that dynamic as well. At the end of the day, we both agree that our role as a full-time parent is irreplaceable, almost immeasurable, and the most profound work we will ever do. In today's episode, I wanted to share a personal experience I recently went through in hopes of helping any of you who are struggling to seek peace amidst the craziness of our world at the moment. The current state of our world may be leaving you feeling hopeless, confused, sad, worried, and even fearful. As mothers, we take on this burden for our children and hold it inside. We seek to find answers to the causes of evil, violence, conflict, division, and disruption in hopes of understanding. The truth is, we will never understand. We will never know what drives a person through darkness instead of light. I often talk about finding clarity and peace of mind through journaling, meditation, movement, and outside time. However, I am not naive to the fact that these often are not enough. There are moments when we must tap into a deeper spirituality in times of uncertainty that goes beyond these outlets. This is an experience we must feel, not just actions that must be taken. I recently found myself in a situation where those outlets weren't enough. I found myself seeking clarity and answers to questions that seemed impossible to find. I was turning to everything I thought I needed, with no success. Finally, I found myself frustrated and chose to listen to my heart instead of my head.In this podcast, I'll discuss another outlet for these darker times. What I learned is that sometimes we aren't truly seeking an answer as to why things happen or are happening. We seek guidance as to what we can do for ourselves and our children. I was able to find that clarity by following my heart to an outlet my family doesn't utilize often, but was one we needed at the time. But also, let's have an honest chat about what that role will entail. If you're already a SAHM, you'll 100% find this relatable and humorous. No one told me my life as a SAHM would often feel consumed with providing, maintaining, and managing my household's basic needs. When I (naively) decided to become a full-time mother, I had a vision for what I thought my life would look like. What I found instead was life's most simple basic needs, such as food, clothing, sleep, and shelter, had become not only my full-time job but also the sources of my biggest frustrations and overwhelmed. However, we find these unbelievably beautiful moments in this role through it all. Winning as a SAHM is Selfish

Winning as a SAHM takes an act of selfishness at times, in order to accomplish your goals, and that's okay. There are moments in motherhood where we need to put ourselves first. You have to look at self-improvement within the 4 Foundational Elements of Home, Health, Wealth, and Love as investments and get selfish in order to take action and make a change. This doesn't mean you give up your responsibilities and duties of motherhood. It means saying “no” to things so you can say “yes” to yourself. That means we lock the bathroom door to use the bathroom by ourselves. That means we say no to the birthday party on the weekend because we need to tackle a household project that will make your family life easier. That means we say no to television and take the kids outside so you can get a 30-minute walk in. The only way to win at life, to accomplish your goals, to take care of your needs, is to squash the guilt of being selfish and realize these moments are investments for the greater good. Julie and I dive into what holistic parenting looks like, How to apply it, and how it benefits us as SAHMs. Julie's book, "A Parenting Revolution for Higher Evolution: Raising resilient, responsible, compassionate kids from the inside out," hits shelves on February 24th but you can buy it digitally now. Julie's passion to help struggling parents comes from a place of understanding and awareness that we live in a society filled with pressures we aren't taught to handle. If we know better, we can do better. Our conversation touches on the indoctrination we are all accustomed to, which dictates how we parent in this new Era. But, what if we approached parenting the way it was approached for hundreds of years prior? Would we be teaching our children skills to be more resilient, responsible, and compassionate? I had Julie come on today, so we have the tools and knowledge needed to best raise the future generation. My hope is that Julie can help YOU feel more confident as a mother. Enjoy. The fourth Foundational Element to living a fulfilled life as a SAHM is LOVE. In this episode, I go over the four main components of love we can reflect on when we're feeling unfulfilled. As with the other three elements (home, health, and wealth), there are areas you can make small intentional efforts with every day. Or, if you feel like you need to place greater effort in one area, I provide resources as starting points for you to do so. Love is an important element we must consider because, as SAHMs, we can spend all day being with and giving to others without realizing we haven't truly connected with those we love the most. Oftentimes, we also haven't taken the time or created space for self-care, which builds a great sense of love for oneself. The third Foundational Element to living a fulfilled life as a SAHM is wealth. Some of you may be wondering why wealth is a topic I am discussing with a group of mostly SAHMs, but the truth is that wealth is managed and used by an entire household. This means the entire household needs to be on the same page. In this episode, I simplify the overall approach to household wealth by focusing on 2 key components which should be used to build a solid foundation within this element. It is my experience that by focusing on these 2 key components of wealth, SAHMs can more easily find peace at home, confidence in spending, and less anxiety over the topic of money. Once these components are in place, a household can THEN and ONLY then, focus on building wealth if they so choose. Please remember, this element is tough. It may make you uncomfortable and possibly trigger deep emotions and/or trauma. Take it slow. Be kind to yourself and your household. For the sake of simplicity, the main resource I provide you within this episode is the great Dave Ramsey. My hope for this episode is to bring you awareness and understanding of these 3 components of your overall health and well-being: Mind, Body, and Soul: or Mental, Physical, and Spiritual. This will help you better understand how your overall health can be deeply impacted if you are not taking care of all 3 components. I know you are a busy mama, but there are cost-effective (even free!) activities you can do regularly to invest in your health. Lastly, the ideas and approaches I give you are highly impactful. If your home is your office and your office is your home, then how can you create a space that is effective and efficient? The answer is with the 3 Ss of Home Management. Physical SpaceStuffSystemsI dive further into each of these areas and give examples of how to apply the 3 Ss on a daily or as-needed basis. My hope is to provide you with a tool to revert back to when you are feeling off-balance and the cause has been determined to be something within your environment/home. Working through the 3 S's will give you a place to direct your energy and intentionality to improve your life and get you back on track. Resources Mentioned:Allie Casazza - https://alliecasazza.com/ Kendra Hennessy - http://www.kendrahennessy.com/ Minimal Mom - https://www.youtube.com/c/theminimalmom Join the Mama Mindset Community!IG https://www.instagram.com/mama_mindset_podcast/FB https://www.facebook.com/mamamindsetfollowersWebsite https://amycothren.com

Pornography. It affects everyone in some way. There are roughly 200,000 people in the U.S. who are addicted to porn. Nearly 35% of all internet downloads are related to porn. Some sources claim that the porn industry, which makes nearly $5 billion a year, has more influence on the U.S. economy than Netflix. Pornography addiction is a serious problem in marriages, but how do you know if/when it's a problem? Is watching a little porn okay? How do you know it has become an addiction? Do you feel like your husband watches porn because he isn't attracted to you? How do you approach a conversation with your spouse about their porn habit? These are all questions we answer in this episode with my incredible guest, Sam Tielemans. Sam is a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in helping couples heal from the impact of pornography or infidelity. He does an amazing job in this episode of identifying the underlying causes of porn addiction and walking us through the conversations we can have with our partners to address this problem.  If you found value in today's episode, please be sure to share it.Contact Sam Here:http://healingcouples.org/ Join the Mama Mindset Community!IG https://www.instagram.com/mama_mindset_podcast/FB https://www.facebook.com/mamamindsetfollowersWebsite https://amycothren.com

Today's episode sets the foundation for the upcoming 4 episodes. I have created a specific framework for living a fulfilled life as a SAHM and am really looking forward to sharing these with you. The 4 Foundational Elements are HOME, HEALTH, WEALTH, and LOVE. When I find myself struggling, feeling off, or lacking focus, I evaluate these elements to find the problem and take steps towards the solution. This episode aims to give an overview of this framework and why it is essential. Your approach to these elements can be a simple day-to-day approach or more complex if you find yourself struggling on a larger level. Throughout the next episodes, I will dive deeper into each of the 4 Foundational Elements with specific examples, tools, and resources to get you started. Please remember that the resources I discuss and provide are ones I have personally used and are meant to be starting points. I always encourage women to find tools that best align with them and their personal goals. Don't forget to join the Facebook Group Mama Mindset Tribe, where we continue the conversation, support one another in our journeys, and build deeper connections with like-minded women. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2761464970849859/ 4 Ways to Support the PodcastShare to your social mediaShare the episode with a friendFollow on social media and join the FB GroupLeave a rating and reviewJoin the Mama Mindset Community!IG https://www.instagram.com/mama_mindset_podcast/FB https://www.facebook.com/mamamindsetfollowersWebsite https://amycothren.com

Ep 92 - How Self-Care Helps You Accomplish Your New Year's Goals with Tawnya Feldman

Today's incredible guest is a woman I have known for a very long time and very much look up to when it comes to recognizing the importance of self-care in our busy mom lives. Tawnya Feldman has been in the beauty business for 25 years and truly is the big sister who pushes and encourages you to focus on your self-care. She is currently a consultant for TruAura and is passionate about helping women find and be their most confident best self through Microbiome clean products. Although she has been in the beauty biz for that long, she also brings a unique experience to such a feminine energy-based industry with her background in agriculture and the heavy equipment industry. Her down-to-earth approach to skincare and beauty routines is a breath of fresh air in an industry that I (personally) often find feels like too much. In this episode, we talk about the importance of how creating a healthy nighttime routine enables you to establish and stick to a consistent morning routine. In turn, this gives you space to focus on self-care, which THEN gives you the energy to accomplish those goals you want to CRUSH in 2022. We both provide our own unique approaches to these routines and share what has worked and what hasn't worked for us. We even talk about washing your face in the creek when you're camping! Because, after all, we are Idaho gals! Please remember that my routine is different than Tawnya's, and her routine will be different than yours. I want you to leave this conversation feeling empowered to discover your own unique approach to self-care and find what truly fills your cup in this world. I want you to go into 2022 with absolute confidence and wake up in 2023, reflecting on how amazing your previous year was. P.S. I LOVE her clean mascara and makeup remover from TruAura. HIGHLY recommend my friends.Contact Tawnya for clean beauty products or tips on self-care here:IG: https://www.instagram.com/tawnyadennyfeldman/FB: https://www.facebook.com/tawnya.feldmanFB Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1209277926073675 Join the Mama Mindset Community!IG https://www.instagram.com/mama_mindset_podcast/FB https://www.facebook.com/mamamindsetfollowersWebsite https://amycothren.com
