More than two thousand years ago God broke through the barrier separating sinful humanity from a Holy God and took on human flesh in the form of a tiny baby. Christianity says all of human history had been building to that monumental event that separated time. Why did God, the creator of the universe, decide to enter our world, not as an avenging angel, but as a vulnerable and innocent baby? It's because of love. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Pastor Max Lucado, best-selling author and preacher, talks about the true meaning of Christmas. That Christmas set into motion the life-altering cosmos calamity that closed the chasm between God and sinful man."Christmas", says Lucado, "begins what Easter celebrates." The two highest holy days of the Christain calendar are eternally linked. While Christmas has become much more commercialized with shopping and Santa taking center stage, it hasn't changed the reality that the peace and joy we talk about on Christmas cards and ad slogans, flows only from this one event, the birth of Jesus: "For God so loved the world!" Sometimes if we take a look at how animals were percieved in the past, it can give us new insight into our perceptions of animals today. Join Meg and Trev to discuss how people in Medieval times in Europe perceived animals wild, domesticated and fantastical. We look at how the dominant paradigms of the times (Paganism and Christianity) affected how different animals were treated, the unique relationships peope of the time had with animals, how the different classes of people viewed animals, and take a look at human art from the Medieval period in the form of colourful depictions of animals in books known as Bestiaries, animals in music and also animals in stories and legends of the time. Can we say for sure that Medieval times were more brutal for animals than they are now, or is this a myth? What unexpected animal was closely associated with Christain divinity in the Middle Ages? How did people's perceptions of animals change as Christianity became the dominant religion? What animal pulled the Norse goddess Freya's chariot? These questions and more will be answered in this history based show. Liberty Counsel Represents Kim Davis Liberty Counsel is taking hits for representing Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis' religious liberty case at the 6th Circuit Court Appeals. At issue is the Liberty Counsel's challenge of the 2015 Obergefell decision and a potential reversal, in favor of religious liberty. Kim and her husband, as well as Liberty Counsel have been subjected to multiple, serious death threats. Liberty Counsel President Mat Staver released a statement Monday, noting that “Anyone who stands up to the hateful agenda of the LGBTQ Mafia is demonized. . .. the LGBTQ left will not tolerate religious freedom and wants to destroy anyone who disagrees.” Biden Administration Announces Plea Deal with 9/11 Conspirators The Biden administration Department of Justice has announced a plea deal with alleged conspirators of the 9/11 attacks, which occurred 23 years ago. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid Bin ‘Attash, and Mustafa al Hawsawi will plead guilty to conspiracy and murder charges, but will not face the death penalty for the murders of 2,977 people on September 11, 2001. Senator JD Vance commenting on the deal told an audience yesterday, “"We need a president who kills terrorists, not negotiates with them.” And Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, called the decision “unthinkable” and a “slap in the face” for families of those murdered by the terrorists. God said, “Whoever sheds man's blood, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God He made man.” (Gen. 9:6) 60% of Americans Support Death Penalty 60% of Americans support the death penalty. A respected American polling organization, Edison Research, has issued its exit poll results for the Venezuelan election. Opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia of the Unitary Platform easily won by a margin of 65 to 31%. Younger (18-29 year old) voters were more likely to vote against the communist dictator, by a margin of 74% to 21%. Edison Research has been the sole provider of election data to the National Election Pool, consisting of ABC News, CBS News, CNN, and NBC News. Also, AltaVista obtained results from about 1,000 polling stations, photographed them, analyzed them and then sent the results around the world. They also showed a landslide: 66 percent for González, 31 percent for Maduro. Debt in Africa Has Increased Substantially Africa's debt burden has increased substantially just since 2010. Reuters reports that Zambia, Ethiopia, and Ghana are now in default. And at least 20 African nations have taken on a heavy debt burden, as defined by the IMF, a condition that did not exist for these countries just 10 years ago. Although, none of these nations are in as severe a condition as the United States - with a debt-to-GDP ratio — now at 122% up from 64% in 2008. Japan, Sudan, Lebanon, and Greece have a higher debt-to-GDP ratio than the United States. “The debtor is servant to the lender.” Proverbs 22:7. Focolare Word of Life —May 2024Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love (1 John 4:8).The first letter of John is addressed to all people and it encourages us to restore fellowship because our society is divided by many different doctrines and ways of life. John exhorts us to keep in mind what has been proclaimed from the beginning of Christain teaching when the first disciples experienced living a life with the Lord. By repeating this in the way we live with Jesus in our lives we will be in communion with the first disciples and therefore with Jesus and the Father.[i]Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.St. John reminds us that it has been revealed that God loved us first by taking upon himself a human existence, in Jesus, with all the limitations and weaknesses. While on the cross, Jesus shared in our separation from the Father through His cry, “My God, why have you forsaken me?” He brought to us healing through the total gift of Himself, by loving us without limits or conditions and His life show us what true love is. Through the example Jesus gives to us, we can understand that loving takes courage, hard work along with the risk of facing adversity and suffering. But, if we can love in this way we will participate in God's life and experience His freedom and the joy of self-giving. By loving as Jesus loved, we become aware that we are free from ourselves and from the selfishness that closes the door to communion with our brothers and sisters and with God.Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. The human heart longs to know God, who created us and who knows us in the deepest way possible. Our faith informs us that God is Love and by loving like him we get a glimpse of the truth of this Love. And if we do make it to love like him we will grow in the knowledge of God because we are essentially living his life and we walk in his light. This is accomplished when love becomes mutual, because if we love one another, ‘God abides in us.' [ii] It's similar to two electric poles coming together to produce light. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. Chiara Lubich said, ‘To witness that God is love is the great revolution we are called to offer to the modern world which is experiencing extreme tension just as the early Christians bore testimony to this in the pagan world of their time'. How can we do this? How can we live this love that comes from God? ‘By learning from his Son to put it into practice... in particular, let us focus on serving our neighbors, especially those closest to us, beginning with little things, with the most humble kinds of service. Let us make the effort, following Jesus' example, to take the initiative in loving, being detached from ourselves and embracing all the small or big crosses that this might entail. In this way, we too will soon reach that experience of God, that communion with him, that fullness of light, peace and inner joy which Jesus wants us to have.'[iii]Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.Santina often visited a nursing home that was run by a Catholic association. One day, she and Roberta, her colleague, met Aldo, a tall, very cultured and very wealthy man. Aldo looked sternly at the two young women and said, ‘Why do you always come here? What do you want from us? Why don't you just let us die in peace?' Santina didn't lose heart and told him, ‘We are here for you, to spend some time together, to get to know each other and become friends.' They continued to visit the home regularly. Roberta recounts, ‘That man was particularly closed in on himself and dejected. He did not believe in God. Santina was the only one who was able to get close to him, gently listening to him for hours. She prayed for him and, on one occasion, gave him a rosary which he accepted.' Later, Santina learned that he had spoken her name as he was dying. The pain of his death was lessened by the fact that he died peacefully, holding the rosary she had given him.' Prepared by Silvano Malini and the Word of Life Team [i] Cf. 1Jn 1:1-3[ii] Cf 1Jn 4:12[iii] C. Lubich Word of Life May 1991
