A major new report from the OECD has revealed shocking insights into how screen use is shaping children's lives—and not for the better. In this episode, Justin and Kylie Coulson unpack the disturbing statistics, explain the real-world impact of screens on kids’ mental health, relationships, and development, and offer practical, age-specific strategies to help parents take back control. From toddlers to teens, this is the digital wake-up call every parent needs. KEY POINTS Startling Stats: Aussie teens average 7 hours of screen time per day. 12% use screens more than 80 hours per week. 70% of 10-year-olds “own” smartphones. 60% of Australian girls report severe distress from cyberbullying. 4 Uncomfortable Truths for Parents: Real-world problems predict digital problems. Kids in distress offline turn to screens for escape. Most parents are fighting the wrong war. The issue is less about screen time and more about content and connection. It’s a bi-directional trap. Poor mental health drives screen addiction, and screen use worsens mental health. Parental hypocrisy matters. Kids don’t listen if we model the very behaviour we criticise. The Hidden Costs of Screen Use: Depression, anxiety, loneliness, academic decline, sleep issues, and family conflict all rise with excessive and unsupervised screen use. The Real Solution: Strong offline relationships, autonomy-supportive parenting, and a focus on values, not just rules or limits. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE “You can’t lift someone up if you’re underneath them. You’ve got to stand on high ground.” — Justin Coulson RESOURCES MENTIONED OECD Report: How’s Life for Children in the Digital Age? The Parenting Revolution by Justin Coulson Happy Families Webinars and Courses Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg Past episodes on sextortion and gaming ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS For Kids Aged 0–7: Be present during screen time or avoid it altogether. Keep devices out of bedrooms—model this yourself. Avoid gamified apps and addictive content. Prioritise simple, slow-paced shows (e.g., Bluey). For Kids Aged 8–12: Create a co-designed family media plan. Prioritise what they’re consuming, not just how much. Invest in offline activities and friendships—nature, play, and sport are protective. For Teens: Shift from control to collaboration. Support autonomy and solve problems with them. Address root issues—mental health, loneliness, stress—before tackling screen habits. Model healthy screen use. Walk your talk, or your words will fall flat. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to episode 4! In this episode, Mama Bear Landon Starbuck joins us to talk about the war on children and the urgent need to rise up and join the parenting revolution. The War on Children - a Documentary and a Battle Cry Landon and her husband Robby Starbuck produced the impactful film "The War On Children," that exposes the ongoing battle for control of the next generation and their minds. While the film was blocked by the mainstream media and from being promoted on most social media channels, Elon Musk shared it on X where it gained more than 40 million views in the first week. Defending the Truth One of the most dangerous methods being used against our children changing language, definitions and the lack of basic, objective truth and faith. Landon and Emily talk about the devasting impact this has had on our youth and what we can do about it. The Parenting Revolution Landon shares strategies to shift the power back to parents. Action Items + Mentioned on the Show: Watch the War on Children Read Landon's free Parenting Revolution guide. Send this episode to a Mama Bear who needs to hear it! More about Landon Starbuck: Landon left the music industry as a Billboard charting singer/songwriter to use her voice advocating for children and women who've experienced trafficking and exploitation. Over the years, she's lent her expertise to national organizations and boards combatting human trafficking and abuse of women and children. She's a partner with The National Center On Sexual Exploitation and a member of The Coalition To End Sexual Exploitation. In 2021, Landon directed the largest coalition and demonstration at our Southern border exposing the human trafficking crisis. In 2022, Landon was invited to give a TEDX talk at the historic Franklin Theatre. Months after receiving a standing ovation, she was told her talk, “Stopping The Epidemic of Child Trafficking & Exploitation” was BANNED by TEDX for supposedly violating their content guidelines yet they failed to cite any part of the talk that violated the guidelines. Child protection advocates were quick to condemn TedX for banning Landon's powerful talk.

Together, they interview Doug Haddad, award-winning teacher and best-selling author, who shares with us stories from his international adventures. A profound experience is the enlightenment!”Doug begins the interview by sharing his recent experiences in the middle east, Abu Dhabi to be exact, and how he was able to share his message with thousands during his time there. He said to those parents he met, "You being here as parents is the bravest, most challenging, most rewarding, most exhausting, most exciting thing you'll ever do in your life. But, you're changing the world and we're doing it together, one parent, one child at a time, for this generation and future generations to come."On that same trip, he found himself at a dinner with members of the royal family, gathering in a large room. He said, "Within a few hours, I was making friends... I realized that, yes, there are differences among all of us, there are cultural differences, and more. When you spend enough time with anybody, we all root in the same universal truths. We are all alike and have the same needs and desires." https://www.juliephillipshatch.com/ Parenting Expert Holistic Health Practitioner Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Do you sometimes wonder if you're doing the right thing for your child—making the right choices for them? Are you struggling with how to handle their challenging behavior? Are the time outs and punishments not working any more and you don't know what to do next? Are you worried about your child because of their behavior at home or getting in trouble at school? I get it. I've been there. I know what it's like to raise a child with ADHD. I know what it's like to be a working mother. I've raised three kids through divorce. And none of it is easy! Parenting is not easy. But it doesn't have to be a struggle. I am Julie Hatch, a licensed pediatric nurse practitioner and a holistic health practitioner of Chinese Medicine. I have over 30 years of working as a nurse practitioner, and over 30 years of raising three awesome kids! I started my parent coaching business, Mums on a Mission (M.O.M.), because I saw an urgent need to help parents understand and handle child-raising challenges, and to help them connect with their kids in a new way that takes the stress and strain out of parenting.. Click on one of the links below for more information about Mums on a Mission or Acupuncture and Alternative Health. Check Out my Podcast Here! Join me every Tuesday as I explore the many elements and questions around parenting. You will hear about a new topic each week with new approaches and insights into the art of parenting- which include topics about not only your child's well-being, but your own as well! A Parenting Revolution for Higher Evolution is a provocative read for consciously awakening parents who are searching for an easier way to raise their kids in today's complex, high pressure, rapidly changing world. The current direction of kids' health with rising rates of depression and anxiety, demands that something change in how we raise our kids, because right now something isn't working. Kids and adults alike are looking to their external world for answers to their problems. More money, a nicer car, more friends on Facebook, a better spouse or partner, a better body, drugs, alcohol – none of which will bring happiness for longer than a nanosecond. Lasting answers and solutions come from within. A parenting revolution begs the case for parents to raise their children from the inside out. Focus on the inner spirit of the child and the outside will naturally flourish. Here is a guide that shows you how to discover what your individual and unique child needs from you to not only survive but to thrive in the world. A Parenting Revolution blends the wisdom of eastern medicine with contemporary western culture. It is a deep dive into holistically understanding and raising your child. Here in your hands is the catalyst we need for higher human evolution.
We know our kids are unique, wonderful, frustrating, always-evolving beings. As parents … and as teachers, aunts, uncles, adults who care about the planet … how can we know what our children need to be healthier and to thrive in the world? Rates of depression and anxiety are rising in our kids, and consciously awakening parents are looking for new tools. Julie Hatch is here to share her views on holistically raising kids from the inside out. Julie Phillips Hatch is a pediatric nurse practitioner, an acupuncturist, a parenting specialist, and a mom. She is a traditional western medicine practitioner, turned alternative holistic practitioner. Her passion has always been helping kids. She spent many years working in pediatrics, first in pediatric intensive care, then in neonatal intensive care. Eventually her focus shifted, and she found her way into the realm of eastern medicine and holistic health. Julie's new book is A Parenting Revolution for Higher Evolution. Find out more about Julie and her work at https://juliephillipshatch.com.
Most parents have followed one of these paths in parenting their children: Imposed their vision or ego on the child of what that child should do –whether it's get good grades, study for a specific career, play sports or music, attend a preferred college, etc.Tried so hard to ease their child's path that the child never learns to fend for him or herself, feels entitled, or becomes simply unmotivatedInflicts their own fears on the child so that the child either rebels or multiplies the fearsCorrects or criticizes the child to fulfill their own needs for outer appearances and expectations and stimulates the child's feeling of never being “enough.” Today's special guest Julie Phillips Hatch says there is another way. And that is to release your own needs and expectations and guide your child to follow his or her own path based on the child's inner spirt, intuition and natural inclination. In her half-manifesto-and-half-practical guidebook A Parenting Revolution for Higher Evolution: Raising Resilient, Responsible, Compassionate Kids from the Inside Out, Julie makes the casethat children parented from this standout are far better capable of becoming happy, stable, fully self-realized and empathetic adults who contribute to a better and more highly evolved world—whatever path they may follow. Julie knows kids. As a mother of three, a pediatric nurse practitioner, pediatric acupuncturist, a parenting coach, and host of the “Mums on a Mission” podcast, she has devoted her life to some aspect of healing and growing capable children. Seeing the impact of so many poor parenting choices, and the suffering, bullying or unfulfilled children who result from them, Julie felt she had to speak up.

Holistic Parenting. What does that even mean? I chat with Julie Hatch, a pediatric nurse practitioner, acupuncturist, and holistic child health expert in this episode. Julie blends her knowledge and experience in Western medicine with Eastern medicine studies to help parents using a holistic approach. Julie and I dive into what holistic parenting looks like, How to apply it, and how it benefits us as SAHMs. Julie's book, "A Parenting Revolution for Higher Evolution: Raising resilient, responsible, compassionate kids from the inside out," hits shelves on February 24th but you can buy it digitally now. Julie's passion to help struggling parents comes from a place of understanding and awareness that we live in a society filled with pressures we aren't taught to handle. If we know better, we can do better. Our conversation touches on the indoctrination we are all accustomed to, which dictates how we parent in this new Era. But, what if we approached parenting the way it was approached for hundreds of years prior? Would we be teaching our children skills to be more resilient, responsible, and compassionate? I had Julie come on today, so we have the tools and knowledge needed to best raise the future generation. My hope is that Julie can help YOU feel more confident as a mother. Enjoy. I was humbled to connect with New York Times Bestselling author, and mindfulness teacher, Dr. Shefali Tsabary. Dr. Shefali has taken parenting, and more specifically the depths of which parenting reaches into our own consciousness, to new levels. Her critically acclaimed books, The Awakened Family, The Conscious Parent, and Out of Control have changed lives, and more importantly, impacted the dynamics of family life.
