Today, we have a very special guest, Melanie Dimmitt. Melanie's son Arlo has cerebral palsy, which isn't a rare disease, but so many listeners reached out to recommend Melanie's book Special to me. After reading her journey of coming to terms with her son's diagnosis and navigating her new life of medically-complex parenting, I knew we had to talk to her. Before Melanie received her son's diagnosis, she was a little terrified of having a child with a disability. It wasn't just that she was afraid of how hard it would be, but that she would miss out of so many parts of parenting and family life. But as she soon found out, while parenting a child with disabilities can bring significant challenges, it also brings extreme joy. In today's episode, Melanie shares the story of how her son Arlo was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, the way she viewed disability before Arlo, and how her view of parenting and raising a child with a disability has shifted since his diagnosis (it's drastic!). She also explains how she wrote her book Special. to help rebrand disability parenting and offer support and encouragement for new parents who have found themselves in the same shoes as Melanie. This conversation was so encouraging and uplifting. You're not going to want to miss it! Links: Learn more about our generous sponsor Moog Medical's Infinity Feeding Pump. This season, we're talking about raising tweens and teens, discussing parents' questions, and exploring how science and faith come together to point our families to security and connection. Earlier this year, we received a question from a mom wondering how to direct her child's moral choices. We're using her question to kick off this series because we believe the issues she raises are important. In this episode, we talk about the difference between influence and control and discuss how relationship can guide our kids' choices more powerfully than rules. We also share why the question's wording prompted us to invite author Kelle Hampton to join us to co-host this series and listen as she shares her wisdom and personal experience.
In his work as an attachment researcher, Dr. Jeffrey Olrick has identified six things our kids need as they grow and develop—delight, support, boundaries, protection, comfort, and equipping. In this episode, Jeffrey and Amy Olrick introduce the importance of delight and discuss how faith and science come together to point families to health and connection. Bestselling author Kelle Hampton joins the conversation to talk about how understanding delight can transform our relationship with our kids.

On this episode of the Journeywomen podcast I chatted with Annie F. Downs on the topic of FUN! Flawed but funny, Annie uses her writing to highlight the everyday goodness of a real and present God. She’s the author of many books, one of which comes out TOMORROW, October 24, called 100 days to Brave. Annie loves traveling around the country speaking to young women, college students, and adults and I can’t wait for you to hear from her today. As you’ll hear me confess, this episode was a selfish endeavor. Having fun is a weak spot for me, particularly when I’m under stress. Annie and I discuss everything from the purpose of fun-having to verses in the Bible that might actually be funny. Here’s why I wanted to have Annie on the show to talk about fun. She said, “I feel like part of the call on my life is to bring joy and fun into the lives of other people so that they will see God. Not so that they will see me.” Before I tease you any further, I have to share the companies that made today’s episode possible: HelloFresh and Oh, Sweet Joy. Biz and Theresa discuss social media and parenting, from over-sharing to privacy settings to ignoring the fear that the internet is going to ruin your child's life. (I know my child is a genius but I did post that picture of her shitting in the tub, soooooo...life ruined?) Biz suggests the best way to get over the fear of not always being there for your child is to sit on them...forever. And, we talk with Kelle Hampton of the blog Enjoying The Small Things, who learned when she gave birth to a daughter with Down syndrome that honesty is the best tool a parent has.
