In this episode of Epic Realms, Nick is joined by author and writer Kelli Fitzpatrick. Kelli is a science fiction writer, game writer, and teacher. She is the author of Captain Marvel: Carol Danvers Declassified (BenBella Books, 2025) and a contributing writer for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game from Modiphius. Her story “The Sunwalkers” won the 2016 Strange New Worlds contest from Simon and Schuster. Her short fiction has been published by Baen Books, Crazy 8 Press, Flash Fiction Online, and more. She also writes essays on sci-fi pop culture for outlets like StarTrek.com, Women at Warp, and anthologies from Sequart and ATB Publishing. Kelli has even written for NASA's Hubble outreach and Arizona State University's Interplanetary Initiative. On top of it all, she has more than a decade of experience teaching high school and college courses. We talk about her early life and the geeky inspirations that led her into writing, watching Star Trek with her family, playing board games, and how those experiences sparked a love for storytelling. During National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), Kelli challenged her students to join her in writing a novel, which inspired her to later submit a story to a Star Trek fiction contest that she ended up winning. That moment opened the door to a whole new world. We also dive into her many anthology projects, how she joined Modiphius, and her unexpected but rewarding introduction to tabletop roleplaying games. She shares how RPGs have helped her grow as a writer and how they can benefit others too. Plus, we talk about her passion for Marvel and her recent Carol Danvers Marvel book, how the character shaped her fandom and why getting to tell that story was such a meaningful opportunity. Tune in for an inspiring conversation that blends fandom, education, creativity, and the power of storytelling.

Prepare to remodulate your phaser frequencies as we go for a ride with "Scorpion, Pts. 1 & 2"!Author, teacher, and community activist Kelli Fitzpatrick joins the show this week to discuss a pair of Star Trek: Voyager episodes that see Captain Janeway contemplating a deal with a devil she knows in order to defeat a much more terrifying enemy. Voyager's journey back to the Alpha Quadrant has finally crossed into Borg space and the crew must decide whether to press forward or give up their quest to return home. But the Borg have their appendages full with an invasion from another dimension, and Species 8472 could spell the end for Voyager, the Borg, and the entire galaxy! The fourth season of every Star Trek show starts with a bang, and Voyager is no exception. Janeway and crew are faced with a near-undefeatable enemy in Species 8472, not to mention thousands of Borg or the intractable moral quandary of restoring Seven of Nine's humanity. "Scorpion" has our characters fighting tooth-and-nail with enemies and allies alike and struggling to remain human and humane in the face of disaster. On this episode, we talk about Voyager's "Best of Both Worlds", fighting against your nature, following the chain of command, the debate of collectivism vs. individuality, Janeway's skills as a mentor, giving aid to the enemy, the limits of consent, exploring the right to die, and making the "anti-Tuvix decision."We also discuss recycling TNG plots, the lost art of the teaser, the unrealized 4th season of TOS, Chakotay channeling McCoy vibes, the coronavirus moving into your apartment, "Janekotway", the vagaries of the universal translator, "Borgager", the pastimes of powerful people, Sliders, Mom and Dad are fighting, "outer fluid", some slight Picard premiere spoilers, and Aaron has a few notes for Alex Kurtzman!"Excuse me . . . what do the Borg need with a planet?"Follow Kelli on Twitter and visit her website!http://www.twitter.com/kellifitzwriteshttps://kellifitzpatrick.comBoldly roll with the Star Trek Adventures RPG from Modiphius!https://amzn.to/3bPt5IFLearn the story behind your favorite Trek stories with Backtrekking!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkingSwap stories with us on Facebook and Twitter and the Just Enough Trope Discord!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttp://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttps://discord.gg/UeytGNPBuy us a wet/dry space vac on Patreon!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodSubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2

This week, we're going back to school to study education (or the lack thereof) in the Star Trek universe! Every Starfleet officer is an alum of the same university, Starfleet Academy, and the egalitarian, scarcity-free world of the Federation would be a learning paradise, so why do we see classrooms so infrequently on Trek shows? Writer and educator Kelli Fitzpatrick joins the show to examine how learning has changed in the 24th century, and we discuss topics such as the way education breaks down our societal barriers, the promise of a multi-discipline, wallless classroom with an unlimited budget, the questionable testing practices of Starfleet Academy, and why teachers won't be replaced with learning bubbles anytime soon. This will be on the test!Follow Kelli on Twitter and visit her website!https://twitter.com/kellifitzwriteshttps://kellifitzpatrick.com/Tell your own stories with the Star Trek Adventures RPG Core Book!https://amzn.to/2oBeBbbCome chat with us on the JET Discord!https://discord.gg/UeytGNPJoin our crew on Patreon and get access to our live episodes, DS9/VOY recaps and more!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodClick through our Amazon link on enterprisingindividuals.com to support the show!http://www.enterprisingindividuals.comhttps://www.amazon.com/?tag=jet01-20&linkCode=ezFollow us on Twitter and Facebook for Trek news and updates!http://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttp://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/eistpod/
