Tax Collectors and Sinners | Matthew 9:9–13 In this sermon, Rev. Lucy Baum reflects on one of the most surprising moments in Jesus' ministry: the calling of Matthew the tax collector. When Jesus invites Matthew to become one of his disciples and then shares a meal with tax collectors and sinners, those around him are scandalized. Why would a teacher who speaks about the righteousness of God choose to spend time with people who seem so clearly in the wrong? As the story unfolds, we discover that Jesus is asking a deeper question than we might expect—not simply who belongs, but what mercy really means. Drawing on Matthew 9, the prophet Hosea, and stories of forgiveness and restoration, this sermon explores the relationship between mercy and justice. It challenges us to consider why God's mercy can sometimes feel uncomfortable, especially when it is extended to people we believe do not deserve it. What if justice is about more than punishment? What if mercy and justice are not opposites, but partners? And what if healing damaged relationships is more powerful than settling a score? Through a powerful reflection on restorative justice, Rev. Baum invites us to imagine a way of life that holds mercy and accountability together—a way that opens the door to transformation for everyone involved. "I desire mercy, not sacrifice." It is a challenging invitation. And it is one that still has the power to change us today.

Danke, Gamers Only. Hoffnung ist, in der Forschungssprache, die Überzeugung, you can get there from here.

In August 2025, a paper published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science suggested that ocean acidification could negatively impact a shark's most useful tool: their teeth. We speak with the papers lead author, Max Baum, about this research, and what the findings could mean for the sharks of tomorrow. Plus we take a deep dive into the wonders of shark teeth, and meet a decidedly unbothered tiger shark named Farida. You can read the paper we discuss in this episode here: Simulated Ocean Acidification Affects Shark Tooth Morphology  You can also follow Max on Instagram (@maxbaum_insights) and discover more about his work here: www.ocean-insights.org. Und was hilft. Your pool pH keeps climbing, you add “the right” amount of acid, and nothing changes. That's not always a mystery problem, it's often a measurement problem. We walk through what muriatic acid strength really means, how Baumé ties to concentration, and why the same dose can work perfectly with 31.45% pool-grade acid but fall flat with weaker big-box products. If you've ever wondered why your pH won't move, this breakdown gives you a cleaner way to diagnose it before you waste chemicals. We also dig into the quiet powerhouse behind most stubborn pH issues: total alkalinity. I explain how alkalinity buffers the water, why higher alkalinity demands more acid to hit the same pH target, and why pH can rebound fast when buffering is strong. You'll hear practical dosing examples for a 20,000-gallon pool and why tools like PoolCalculator help when you can set the exact acid percentage you're using. This is the kind of pool chemistry clarity that makes water balancing feel predictable instead of random. From there we get hands-on with alternatives and safety. We compare liquid muriatic acid to dry acid (sodium bisulfate), including why dry acid can be slower and more finicky at high alkalinity and why dissolving it matters for protecting plaster, vinyl liners, and other pool surfaces. We also talk about fumes, spill risks, deck damage, and safer habits like gloves, eye protection, and avoiding leaks. Finally, we cover Acid Magic as a lower-fume hydrochloric acid option that can shine for homeowners and salt cell cleaning, with an honest look at the price tradeoff. • how Baumé and percent strength affect muriatic acid dosing• why big-box store acid can require a much larger dose• using PoolCalculator to match acid percentage and volume• how total alkalinity buffers pH and causes pH bounce• when sodium bisulfate dry acid helps and when it frustrates• dissolving dry acid to avoid surface damage and staining• handling cautions including burns, fumes, and eye protection• preventing deck damage including leak awareness and the dip method• AcidSend us Fan MailSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors! In this sponsored episode from Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, a leading preventive cardiologist walks through the 2026 cholesterol guideline update and what it means in practice. Seth J. Baum, a Columbia-trained preventive cardiologist, founder of Flourish Research, chairman of the Family Heart Foundation, and past president of the American Society of Preventive Cardiology, breaks down the major changes in the March 2026 ACC and AHA guideline release. You will hear why LDL targets are explicit again after nearly a decade, why universal lipoprotein A screening is now recommended, why a coronary calcium score above 300 places a patient in the highest-risk treatment tier, and why apolipoprotein B measurement can refine risk assessment when LDL is at goal. Baum also covers the alternatives available when a patient cannot tolerate a statin, including ezetimibe, PCSK9 inhibitors, inclisiran, and bempedoic acid, along with practical framing for the statin-hesitant patient. You will also hear his approach to discussing cholesterol with patients, from the science of lipoprotein physiology to the case for earlier and more aggressive lipid-lowering treatment. Dr. Baum was not compensated for his participation in today's episode. The opinions expressed are his alone and do not represent the opinions of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. At Novartis, our mission is to ensure no heart is lost too soon. We envision a world where preventable CV deaths are no longer part of our lives. We're proud of the positive impact we've made over the past 40 years and remain dedicated to tackling the most challenging problems in CVD.

This week, Coach Blu speaks to Richard Baum, a former acting drug czar and Georgetown professor, draws on decades of experience in drug policy to offer a thoughtful look at the opioid crisis and broader addiction challenges. In this episode, he discusses how addiction is not just a personal issue, but a public health problem that affects families, communities, and government systems. He explains that effective responses require more than punishment or short-term fixes. Instead, they need a balanced approach that includes prevention, treatment, recovery support, and smart policy. Baum highlights the importance of evidence-based strategies, such as expanding access to treatment, supporting harm reduction efforts, and making sure people struggling with addiction can get help without unnecessary barriers. He also emphasizes that lasting progress depends on cooperation between communities, healthcare providers, and government leaders. By working together, they can create systems that reduce overdose deaths, improve recovery outcomes, and address the root causes of substance use disorders. Before we do that, well also hear about “zombie fish” that sound like they would be more at home in one of Baum's tales than in real life and a modern-day invention that's making us think of the “Emerald Glasses” featured in the first Oz book. And of course, our Oz-themed journey wouldn't be complete without a tornado. Featuring audio from the Dana & Parks show out of KMBZ in Kansas City, WWJ Newsradio in Detroit, KCBS Radio in the Bay Area and Own the Road with Kelli and Bob out of KRLD 1080 in Dallas.

I think we're still waiting to see the explosion. I hope it comes this decade, it might not come till next decade, but something is going on.” –Shiva BaumAbout David Silver:David Silver is the former co-host of the Mindrolling podcast. He is a filmmaker and director, most recently coming out with Brilliant Disguise. Brilliant Disguise tells the unique story of a group of inspired Western spiritual seekers from the 60s, who in meeting the great American teacher, Ram Dass, followed him to India to meet his Guru, Neem Karoli Baba, familiarly known as Maharaj-ji. Two days before he left his body, Maharaj-ji instructed K.C. Tewari to take care of the Westerners, which he did resolutely until the day he died in 1997. Silver's #1 charting MGM/UA/Warners film, “The Compleat Beatles” is the critically acclaimed biopic movie about history's most famous band. The term ‘rockumentary' was first applied to this two-hour movie. Rolling Stone recently described the film as a “masterwork.” Silver's Warner Brothers' feature film, “No Nukes” also started the whole trend of music/activism feature documentaries.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
