Phantasy Star Online played a massive role in popularizing online console games at the turn of the century. However, I often struggle to convey its appeal today. I talked to two YouTubers, DeployableLover and Section Skyly, who actively play the game today, about their experience and what they like most about it. Featuring: Ammosart, Ashgar, Belghast, Grace, Kodra, Tamrielo, and Thalen Hey Folks! We are back to a full crew this week. We start off with a discussion about Fallen Aces which leads into a larger discussion of games that feel like spiritual successors to other games. From there we talk about Kodra's experiences with Origins and taking his kiddo to at least part of it. We revisit the Nintendo Direct discussion from last week with a few things that Kodra specifically wanted to talk about. Tam has returned to Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis and how it now has way more content than someone can actually do. We wrap up the show with some initial discussion of Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail which feels like a love letter to South America. You are now dialled in to a brand new DreamPod special on the Dreamcast's ultimate multiplayer killer app: Phantasy Star Online, or - in Lozz's words - "the greatest f***ing game in the world. Period." Back in 2001, PSO broke new ground by bringing an online RPG experience to console, but did you know that you can still play PSO online on your Dreamcast in 2024?Assembled in The Dreamcast Junkyard lobby this time round are Lozz, Mark (aka MazGamingUK), Brian and Harvey (aka Pizza Hotline) to talk all about what makes Phantasy Star Online's revolutionary console RPG goodness so darn special. They also recount their first memories of the game, think of questions they'd want to ask the game's developers if they had the chance, and take on Lozz's "Who Want to be a Mesetanaire" PSO quiz...Links:How to get online with DreamcastDusqk (Bandcamp Page)MazGamingUK (Twitch)All musical interludes in this episode are songs from the Phantasy Star Online soundtrack.Looking for more Dreamcast Junkyard goodness?

Happy Winter Season of Non-Denominational Holiday Celebration™ to all of you who celebrate non-denominationaly! Happy Tuesday™ to those of you who don't! It's time for our final debate of the year and our annual shitty peripheral gift exchange! Unfortunately, DT!HQ is a little short on budget this year, so we decided to exchange gifts with the local pawn shop as opposed to each other. So today we've gathered together to decide on the best video game peripheral to sell to a pawn shop? Matt brought a plank of wood. Andrew brought a slice of Pizza. Todd brought an oldie that is most certainly also a goodie. Check it out now on the website: https://www.thedreamcastjunkyard.co.uk/p/the-top-200-dreamcast-games-voted-by.htmlOn this day, 25 years ago, the Sega Dreamcast was launched in its home country of Japan - nearly an entire year before it released in the West. It was Sega's follow up to the much misunderstood Saturn, and sadly their last console before moving to being a third-party developer/publisher. In this podcast retrospective, Andrew, Brian, Mark and Mike cover everything to do with the Dreamcast's 28th of November '98 launch, and discuss what it was that made Sega's swansong console so darn special.Featured audio/music:Audio from the Sega New Challenge Conference, May 21st 1998, Tokyo"Patty (Mothers)" from Psychic Force 2012"Undersea Plant" from E.G.G.: Elemental Gimmick Gear"Aquarium" from Sega Marine Fishing"Opening" from Di Gi Charat Fantasy"Day Dawns" from Phantasy Star Online"Dream" from L.O.L.: Lack of LoveLooking for more Dreamcast Junkyard goodness? A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool
The early 2000s, spanning from 2000 to 2003, were a whirlwind of change and innovation for the video game industry. In 2000, a culmination of creativity met technology, with Sony's PlayStation taking center stage and the indie scene gaining prominence. Video games started gaining a foothold as a recognized art form, while Sega gracefully exited the console market to make way for new players. 2001 saw a surge in console wars with the debut of the GameCube and Xbox, while storytelling in games reached cinematic proportions. By 2002, the allure of sequels reigned supreme, with franchises opting for familiarity, and the end of an era for Rare as Microsoft acquired it. The year 2003 then marked significant mergers, with giants like Square and Enix joining forces and Valve launching Steam. Video games officially became a mainstream industry, drawing in significant investments and changing the face of game development. As the lines between art, entertainment, and business blurred, the early 2000s set the stage for the future of gaming.Featured Games:The Sims, Diablo II, Deus Ex, Thief II: The Metal Age, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Phantasy Star Online, Shenmue, Halo: Combat Evolved, Grand Theft Auto III, Oni, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Final Fantasy X, ICO, Onimusha: Warlords, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Metroid Prime, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Call of Duty, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Freedom Fighters, and Viewtiful Joe. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 6 (00:06) - 2000 (21:54) - 2001 (46:35) - 2002 (59:37) - 2003 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

Sega buying Rovio for $775mm is just the tip of the iceberg in a jam packed episode. Phil explains how CoD's latest kerfluffle breaks the social contract with its players. Kress pull out the classic "two drunks holding each other up" catchphrase to describe the Rovio acquisition. Ethan implores you to remember Phantasy Star Online 2, and declares that Monster Hunter Go will be a surefire hit for Niantic. Laura cracks the code on both Makeover Match and Monopoly Go. And special guest Jayne Peressini makes her TWiG debut to break down what record breaking CS:GO skin sales do and do not say about the viability of marketplace royalties for web3 gaming. Just like the global box office dominating Super Mario Bros movie, this one is not to be missed! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/deconstructoroffun/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/deconstructoroffun/support

Hello and welcome to yet another exciting edition of The HourTime Show, the official podcast of WristWatchReview.com. Your hosts this week are John (@johnbiggs on Twitter), Victor (@vmarks), and Nicholas (@nicholasadeleon). One quick note: Producer Andrew is traveling over the next few weeks so Nicholas is handling editing duties. It *should* sound fine but, unlike Andrew, Nicholas is not a professional editor. You've been warned! Moving on. John opens the show with his thoughts on the Benrus 3061, which we basically all love. If you look up "field watch" in the Watch Geek Dictionary you'll see a photo of it. Not bad for a $600 jawn that was featured in the movie Bullitt! We then turn to a topic Nicholas saw in a local newspaper about how everyone hates Daylight Saving Time, and that its days may be numbered. We go into the history or "point," perhaps, of switching the clocks back and forth every spring and autumn, and basically land on the idea of: pick one and stick with it. At this point, Victor brings up Swatch's old idea, from the late 90s, of "Internet Time," which was an attempt to create a universal time zone, in a sense, that used a measurement called beats and was featured in Phantasy Star Online. Let's bring it back! Victor then runs us through a $30,000 Zenith psychedelic chrono that he believes resembles those old Trapper Keepers. Lastly, we go over the Omega MoonSwatch. Turns out that A) John bought one in Poland a few months ago and B) it's going on tour over the next couple of weeks in a few cities in California and Florida. So, if you want a MoonSwatch and live in one of these cities, feel free to hit up Swatch on social media for more details. And that, as they say, is that. Keep it locked to WristWatchReview.com and @wristwatchreview on Instagram for more fun watch content. Thank you for listening, and have a great week!

Season 1 - Episode 10/10 Daniel McCalla is a Japanese to English video game translator and (occasional) editor. During his four years as a freelancer, he worked on titles such as Phantasy Star Online 2, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, Dragon Quest XI S, and Ender Lilies. He now works in-house at Capcom as part of their localization team. In this episode he chose to chat about The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, which was released in English (and sadly English only) for the first time on the Switch, PS4 and Steam in 2021. The localization was directed by Janet Tsu, with English localization by Plus Alpha (translation by Will Blatchley and edited by Clare Saracine). "With all the fun and drama of the Ace Attorney series set against the backdrop of Victorian-era Britain and Japan, there's sure to be no "Objection!" to the adventures of Ryunosuke Naruhodo as he turns the courtroom upside down! Featuring an intriguing overarching mystery spanning across two games, it's the most engrossing story in the series yet! ‘The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles' is the definitive version of this beloved series!" Additional In this episode Daniel and I discuss a blog by a Japanese person who breaks down the English localization of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. It's a really interesting blog from the perspective of a Japanese native speaker! 英語版「大逆転裁判1&2 -成歩堂龍ノ介の冒險と覺悟-」解説 冒險第1話 法廷【その1】(1) Daniel McCalla Twitter: @Clidante_D Translation Chat A podcast where professional Japanese to English translators and editors chat about their favorite translations. The metaverse is being touted as the do-all, be-all platform of the future where we will work, play, live, and get married. There's only one problem -- video games have already been offering all of that for years. So what's left for the metaverse to give us? Or better yet, do we really need a metaverse at all? We're also discussing the new Sega Sapporo studio led by the former Phantasy Star Online 2 producer, how Xbox's Phil Spencer is calling for a cross-platform ban program, why Take-Two wants to pay nearly $13 billion for Zynga (the maker of FarmVille), and the Bob Saget video game you didn't know you needed in your life. Finally, class is in session with Professor Ryebread in our Gaming History 101 segment. In this episode, we're looking back at the strange hybrid console known as the Nintendo Playstation. This episode has been proudly sponsored by the Retro Game Club Podcast! James Sunderland's life is shattered when his young wife Mary suffer a tragic death.
