En este primer bloque emprendemos un viaje por el Star Wars que nació mirando al chanbara. Un repaso a todas las adaptaciones manga que han moldeado la visión japonesa de nuestra saga favorita. Los planos de Kurosawa, el héroe errante, la espada como extensión del alma, el duelo como ritual… Todo eso estaba en George Lucas antes de que existiera un solo droide. Por eso, cuando el manga tocó la saga, no fue una adaptación: fue un retorno al origen. Recordamos el terremoto artístico que supuso Hisao Tamaki, convirtiendo la Trilogía Original en puro shōnen: duelos que estallan fuera del panel, una Leia de intensidad eléctrica, un Vader emergiendo de la sombra como un demonio samurái. Luego llegó Kia Asamiya, y el duelo de Maul se volvió incluso más brutal en papel que en pantalla. Exploramos rarezas como Black & Silver, y joyas como Estrellas Perdidas, Leyendas de Luke Skywalker, The Mandalorian o los cómics del Ronin de Visions, donde el Japón feudal se fusiona de forma orgánica con la mitología galáctica. Todo ello analizado junto a una expedición fosera de lujo, enriquecido por la mirada técnica, honesta y apasionada de Kenny Ruiz, que nos ayuda a entender por qué el manga es una de las formas más poderosas de reinterpretar la Fuerza. ⭐ BLOQUE 2 — A Path of Lightsaber: El Camino del Sable de Luz, junto a su autor. Y entonces el viaje deja de ser estudio… para convertirse en destino. Porque todo ese legado del manga japonés desemboca en un autor español formado en la Escola Joso, curtido en obras como Dos Espadas, Team Phoenix, Telémaco y El misterio del Capitán Nemo. Un artista que pasó por el mercado europeo, publicó en Japón con Tezuka Productions y acabó recibiendo la llamada más inesperada: Lucasfilm quería que él creara un manga original de Star Wars. Así nació Path of the Lightsaber. Sin spoilers —porque aún no ha llegado a España— podemos adelantar que la historia sigue a Nioka, una reparadora que encuentra un sable de luz perdido. Un hallazgo que no actúa como arma… sino como un rito, un símbolo que la empuja hacia un camino que nunca imaginó recorrer. Frente a ella está Itai, un “prospecto” de los Caballeros de Ren: un ronin oscuro, un reflejo distorsionado de lo que Nioka podría convertirse si la sombra la sedujera. It's a wet November evening across Western Europe, the steel-grey clouds have obscured a rare low-latitude aurora this week, and Elliot Williams is joined by Jenny List for this week's podcast. And we've got a fine selection for your listening pleasure! The 2025 Component Abuse Challenge has come to an end, so this week you'll be hearing about a few of the entries. We've received an impressive number, and as always we're bowled over by the ingenuity of Hackaday readers in pushing parts beyond their limits. In the news is the potential discovery of a lost UNIX version in a dusty store room at the University of Utah, Version 4 of the OS, which appeared in 1973. Check out your own stores, for hidden nuggets of gold. In the hacks, we have two cameras at the opposite end of the resolution spectrum, but sharing some impressive reverse engineering. Mouse cameras and scanner cameras were both a thing a couple of decades ago, and it's great to see people still pushing the boundaries. Then we look at the challenge of encoding Chinese text as Morse code, an online-upgraded multimeter, the art of making lenses for an LED lighting effect, and what must be the best recreation of a Star Wars light sabre we have ever seen. In quick hacks we have a bevvy of Component Abuse Challenge projects, a Minecraft server on a smart light bulb, and a long term test of smartphone battery charging techniques. We round off with a couple of our long-form pieces, first the uncertainties about iRobot's future and what it might mean for their ecosystem -- think: cheap hackable robotics platform! -- and then a look at FreeBSD as an alternative upgrade path for Windows users. From almost going out of business in 2000 to becoming the biggest toy manufacturer in the world. This is an empire! Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom-and-pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. [OG Law Ad) Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here, along with Stephen Semple. What Steve told me is that it's a little bit different episode today. We're not talking about the building of an empire, but the saving of the LEGO Empire, right? It was already an empire, and as empires sometimes do, I guess starting to collapse. Stephen Semple: Yep, yeah. Dave Young: And then something happened. Stephen Semple: Here's the thing that's remarkable. According to studies I've come across, when companies go through the type of challenge that LEGO faced, only literally one in 10 survive it. Most businesses do not survive it. And they not only survived, they went from being, I think they were the third-largest toy manufacturer to after facing this crisis, they became the largest toy manufacturer in the world. Dave Young: Wow. Okay. Stephen Semple: So not only did they survive, they thrived. And today they employ over 30,000 people, they have over 1,000 stores. And you can learn more about the early days of LEGO by going back to another episode, episode 28. Can you believe it was 28? We did it in the first year- Dave Young: Wow. Yeah. Stephen Semple: ... of the podcast. But in early 2000, they literally almost went out of business. They were facing a moment where it was unclear whether they were going to survive and they were even in conversations to sell to other toy manufacturers. They were even in conversations with Mattel. Dave Young: Because I don't know exactly how this went, but I can hazard a guess that the pivot they were able to make was to just start prepackaging kits and licensing things from movies and other things, other toys. Because when I was a kid, I had LEGOs, but man, if you wanted to build something specific, you had to come up with that yourself, right? There was no kit that made a battleship or a Star Wars fighter or anything like that. You were lucky if you had a couple of the little window things and maybe one or two little figures, but that was about it. Stephen Semple: Ironically, it's part of what saved them, but also part of what almost killed them. Dave Young: Oh, okay. Stephen Semple: So it's interesting. Dave Young: Right, I'm leaning in. Stephen Semple: Yeah. So we go back to 1997, and basically sales had started to stall in '93, and so they were looking for other ways to grow the business because video games were coming in, all these other things were going on. And in 1997, Peter Eio is an executive with LEGO, and what he's noticed, because he's working in the US market, he's seen a trend in the toy business where half of the toys in the US are being sold under licensing deals.
