Interview by Kris Peters Much has changed with Michigan metalcore outfit We Came As Romans since their last visit to Australian shores seven years ago.The band were thrown into turmoil - both personally and musically - following the tragic loss of co-vocalist and keyboardist Kyle Pavone in 2018. The invariable questions of continuing in the wake of a personal loss of this magnitude took some time to digest, but the decision was made to honour Pavone's memory by not only continuing his musical legacy in the band, but also by pouring their grief and feelings into what would become We Came As Romans' fifth studio album Darkbloom. A sonic portrait of finding light in the darkness, Darkbloom harnessed the sum of all that came before while also thrusting the band into an unknown future full of renewed hope.The album was a resounding success and a fitting tribute to love and loss that has seen We Came As Romans channel their pain into the very thing that brought them together in the first place.The music.We Came As Romans hit Australia for a run of four shows from late next month, with lead vocalist Dave Stephens joining HEAVY from the road in the US to share his excitement."We're on tour right now, so I guess I'll just throw my suitcase on the plane and be good to go," he laughed. "We're ready and excited. We love touring Australia."We ask Stephens what Australian fans can expect from the band after a prolonged absence."We'll be playing a bunch of new stuff," he promised. "We've got a long set, so we will throw in some old ones along the way and some classics. It's been a long time since we've been to Australia, so we will make sure we play a bit of everything."In the full interview we discuss the obvious changes in the band since their last tour, honouring Kyle through music, the overwhelming reception to Darkbloom and how it impacted the band, a new era of music for We Came As Romans, bringing Invent Animate with them for their first Australian tour, the early days of We Came As Romans, how their vision has changed over the years and more.

People deal with grief in different ways, but as a musician the power of music is often the best avenue toward solace.After losing co-vocalist and keyboard player Kyle Pavone four years ago, metalcore legends We Came As Romans did just that, knuckling down and writing an album in direct tribute to their fallen brother.It became a long process, but the end goal never wavered.With the recent release of Darkbloom, We Came As Romans have delivered a beautifully brutal musical eulogy to Pavone, with the deeply personal subject matter allowing each member to contribute something over and above anything attempted before. It is a triumphant farewell and one which guitarist Joshua Moore explained in greater detail when HEAVY got the chance to sit down for a chat with him. We start by asking how the early response to the album has been."It has been insane," he smiled, "better than I could have ever expected. Especially because we had such a long period in between albums. Our last album Cold Like War came out in 2017 and for anyone that follows the band, obviously we lost our singer Kyle shortly after that. It took some time to figure out if we could even be a band any more. If we wanted to be a band any more. And it took some time to write a record that is solely about our grieving process that we dealt with, everything that we went through emotionally navigating the loss of Kyle."Without wanting to dwell on Kyle's loss too much, we ask if the dedication to their former band mate is more musically or lyrically, to which Moore replied."First and foremost musically we wanted to write an album that we thought Kyle would love if he was still with us," he measured. "And I think we nailed that one on the head. Musically, all of us love the album. I think it is the best version of We Came As Romans that we have put out yet. Lyrically the songs are about different emotions that we felt on our way navigating through the grieving process, because you learn alot going through that. It's not just 'oh, I'm going to be sad all the time because I lost my friend'. There's a lot of different emotions that are felt and we wanted to give all of those things their own place in the song. Each song is very different in what it talks about and how it describes the things that we were going through, which was really important because no-one wants to hear an album of ten songs that say the same thing over and over again. So we did our best to make it as different as possible with the topic of each song."In the full interview, Joshua talks about how writing this album helped with the grieving process, if they did anything differently because the subject matter was so personal, the overall feel of Darkbloom, the early days of We Came As Romans and where the band fit in, introducing elements such as orchestral instrumentalisation and keyboards into their music and how they made it work, whittling the album down from more than 30 songs and how they did it and more.

This week on The Fred Minnick Show, Dave Stephens sips Journeyman Corsetts Whips and Whiskey, which won Best in Show at this year's ASCOT Awards.  Stephens is lead vocalist for the heavy metal band We Came As Romans, based in Detroit, Michigan. The band, which formed in 2005, has five albums to its credit, with another album, Darkbloom, set for release in the fall. While the band has undergone numerous personnel changes over the years, it has held strong and is set to embark on yet another tour. Stephens and Fred do a quick olfactory test. During this intimate interview, Fred and Dave talk about everything from the band's longevity to the value of masks on airplanes. But the most poignant moment was when Stephens opened up about the loss of his band mate Kyle Pavone, who died in 2018.

For this episode of Renaissance Soul, I’m joined by Dave Stephens, founding member and vocalist of the Troy, Michigan metalcore band We Came As Romans, as we talk about their debut album To Plant A Seed. Originally released on November 3, 2009 via Equal Vision Records, a deluxe edition of the album was released on January 18, 2011 which includes one bonus track and a DVD titled To Plant a DVD. In covering this monumental debut album, we talk about the beginnings of the band through their early touring and their two EPs, Dreams and Demonstrations, both self released in 2008 before getting signed to Equal Vision. We also go track-by-track throughout the album and Stephens shares any stories he has about the song or making of it. We also touch on the vocal contributions of the late Kyle Pavone, who passed away in 2018, from this album. We Came As Romans originally were going to tour this album to both celebrate it and retire the songs from it for live shows when the pandemic hit and were only able to perform a handful or so shows before all live music got cancelled. We discuss the reasoning for that tour as they are set to do a live stream on April 23rd playing To Plant A Seed in its entirety online.
