Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire joins the podcast this week! During our chat, we discuss the new album Shapeshifter coming out March 28! We also chat about their year-long release of singles, fans' reaction to releasing a ton of singles and music videos, and how it benefits the songs individually in the live setting. We also face the idea of full length albums going away in heavy music, the negative affects of celebrating the past if the band just does singles, how the process of performing encores in a live setting have changed through the years, having evil right in front of our eyes constantly in modern America having to be addressed, the dangers of a band going fully independent when it comes to the passion of creating, how they team build to keep the core group together through 15 years, and the huge benefit of a band member being a producer for the band Petar and Brandon discuss the expectations they have for the new film Spinal Tap 2, the decades late sequels that have scarred us, if Sleep Token is going to blow up across the world on the latest album, and Disturbed burning the Chicago Bulls championship banners. Texan metalcore outfit Memphis May Fire decimated Australian fans almost a decade ago when they toured through the country as special guests to Parkway Drive in 2015. Known for their unassailable live shows, MMF have an uncanny ability to connect with their audience on an otherworldly plane, turning band and audience into one living, breathing, circle pit dancing organism that refuses to yield. The band return in July 2025 as co-headliners with Atreyu, who are celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Curse with a series of never to be repeated shows that will see them play the songs from the album as well as other fan favourites. Individually, each band is an ominous live machine, but together they promise to deliver night after night of sonic carnage to remind us what we have been missing out on.HEAVY caught up with frontman Matty Mullins to find out what to expect."The excitement definitely sinks in nice and early," he smiled when asked if he had cast an eye towards the Australian tour with some six months before it kicks off. "The reality of it all will hit a little closer to that timeframe."We mention the double punch of Atreyu and Memphis May Fire on the same bill, with Matty admitting the union is pretty special to not just the fans, but the bands as well."We've done a co-headliner tour here in the States as well, so bringing that to Australia seems like the right fit," he noted. In the full interview, Matty highlighted plans to perform a mix of new songs from their forthcoming album Shapeshifter, scheduled for release on March 28, alongside classic hits to engage long-time fans. Matt reflected on the band's evolution and how their experiences have improved their live performances, while also addressing the challenges of creating diverse music while preserving their distinct sound. He concluded by expressing excitement about reconnecting with Australian fans and delivering a memorable show, covering heaps more territory over the course of the interview.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Ro starts the show with a tribute to his friend that passed away and the guys talk about losing people too early in life. Toomey then talks about his recent interview with Matty Mullins and how cool the hotel staff were with his requests to move furniture and light fireplaces! The guys then dive into a little state of the podcast and recap the first episodes of the show. Toomey then sits down with Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire and discusses their latest video, Misery. Matty goes behind the scenes and talks about the high tech facility and technology in the video. He then speaks on his nu metal upbringing and having to hide it from his religious parents. Join Justin and I as we talk for the first time after being introduced to each other by mutual friend Matty Mullins. Listen as I kinda awkwardly explain that after a few years of people telling me I should have Justin on the show, that I didnt know who he was or that he was even in a band, but was a guy I saw around at shows and the bar pre/post show with friends. We then get into what it was like for Justin to leave touring behind and the adjustment process for him to adapt to "normal life" and who he was, and wanted to become. We also talk about deciding to live out in Muskegon away from the busier city life of Grand Rapids. Justin talks about how he doesn't really create/play music anymore and even though he dabbles in various aspects of music in building amps/cabs and pedals that he doesn't really ever want to pursue it as more than a hobby. We reflect on unnecessary guitar and gear purchases, first guitars and bands that got us into playing instruments. Enjoy this longer chat that covers a WIDE array of topics. When it comes to folklore surrounding a specific time in history, World War 2 could arguably be the pinnacle of dark history mixed with supernatural folklore. The Nazi's, specifically the SS are said to have frequently studied and dabbled into the occult as well as various sects of witchcraft. One of the most notorious legends emerging from the end of WW2 was a top secret experiment known as “Die Glocke” (The Bell). This machine is said to be a device that could have completely changed modern physics and the entire outcome of World War 2 itself. Theories revolve around it being an anti gravity device, a supercharged particle accelerator, and even a time machine. Join Tyler and Ryan as they uncover the secrets of the Nazi Bell, and why they believe it may have been used for an even more terrifying reason. We experience some unexplained static when speaking about Adolf Hilter and the Bell itself that we have no explanation for. The rights to the “Indiana Jones theme” belongs to The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilms. The rights to “Left for Dead” belongs to Matty Mullins and Memphis May Fire. We do not own any of this music.

⚡️Our first IN PERSON interview since March 2020! ⚡️We had the pleasure of interviewing Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire over Zoom video!Memphis May Fire makes anthems for the broken. The four-piece rock band channel a generation's worth of angst, frustration, and pain, with a focused blend of gigantic melodic hooks and crushing aggression. Even after topping Billboard's Hard Music Albums chart and breaking into radio's Active Rock Top 20, Memphis May Fire refuses to sacrifice who they are or the people who made them. In fact, Remade in Misery, their seventh full-length album, is the heaviest Memphis May Fire record yet.It is the first Memphis May Fire album to be both produced and mixed by Kellen McGregor, the band's guitarist who co-founded the group roughly 15 years ago. The longtime rhythm section of bassist Cory Elder and drummer Jake Garland inject the songs with infinite depth and focus. Cameron Mizell, who coproduced 2014 fan-favorite Unconditional with McGregor, produced Matty's vocals.Mullins enlisted his friend Cody Quistad, guitarist and clean vocalist for the band Wage War, during part of the writing process. Fire From The Gods singer AJ Channer guests on “Only Human.” At the heart of any collaboration is the Memphis May Fire mission: to connect with the brokenhearted. The guys are family to the million-plus fans who follow Memphis May Fire on social media, revered by the people who discovered their early albums in 2009 and 2011; those who made Challenger (2012) the biggest selling debut in the history of Rise Records at the time; and everyone who championed their music since. Unconditional debuted at Number One on Billboard's Rock, Independent, and Hard Music charts. In 2016, This Light I Hold made inroads into radio while rooted in heaviness. Boasting the singles “The Old Me,” “Live Another Day,” and “Heavy is the Weight,” Broken was a distillation of what the band does creatively, with the group's signature passion and fearless genre-bending.Remade in Misery is the sum total of all that's come before with a forceful charge into the future. We want to hear from you!
