She has won the ProXCT series, made the Olympic Long Team in 2016, won the Leadville 100 and Belgian Waffle Ride two times each, and won every NUE race she has entered. Larissa is also a wife as well as a mother to an adorable 16 month old, Addie. She teaches high school math and just signed up to be a NICA NorCal coach after moving back to her hometown from SoCal, where she started a team and coached. This episode talks about all that Larissa has accomplished, how she thinks we can recruit more girls and women into mountain biking, and what some of her hopes are for her daughter as she grows up! Dealing with Mom Guilt is real for many busy women. This podcast is an audio re-creation of an article I wrote for Velonews via their Active Pass subscription service. I got to interview some very successful cycling moms whom I admire like Rose Grant, Larissa Connors, Laura King, and Jennifer Smith. Dealing with mom guilt and trying to balance cycling (or being an athlete), self-care, spending time with your baby, child, or children, working, and having relationships is hard. Realizing that prioritizing self-care and happiness is the foundation of your pyramid and is what helps you show up as the best mom, human, partner, and employee. Studies show that having an optimistic outlook on life increases both resilience and productivity. That said, I don't really believe in balance. I believe in intentional imbalance. Balance doesn't exist but being intentional about how and where you focus your energy is useful and effective. Here's the audio of my article for Active Pass/Velonews. Founded in 2009, the Boston company first started working with professional athletes who wanted to see what their biomarkers, hormone and mineral profiles looked like during their training and how they could use nutrition and lifestyle to improve. They measure over 30 biomarkers and recommend food and supplements to optimize thinks like your energy, cognition, endurance, heart health, and more. I started working with InsideTracker in 2017. I liked it because their ranges for your biomarkers change based on your goals. I also think it's important to have baseline and also recurrent bloodwork as you age and also simply as an athlete. Another great week where we have the opportunity to hear Larissa story from winning Leadville 100 twice, being a math teacher, and a mom!
We talk with two time BWR winner Larissa Connors and go back in time to discuss her two victories at the Belgian Waffle Ride, her recent accomplishment with now being a mother and her plans for the future with cycling and being a mom! @BelgianWaffleRide
Larissa Connors is a two-time winner of both the Leadville 100 mountain bike race and Belgian Waffle Ride. Payson caught up with her at her home in Orange County, California in February to talk work/life balance, over-training, and why she has unfinished business in Leadville. They also talk about why she's glad she doesn't live near any of her toughest racing competitors, how she manages to maintain her infant daughter's breastfeeding schedule while training for races and working full-time as a math teacher, and how her work in the classroom allows her to find a consistent source of self-worth that is so elusive in the unpredictable world of professional cycling. Known for her love of extreme physical challenges, Larissa also has a few cautionary tales up her sleeve, including the time she did five 100 mile mountain bike races in less than six weeks, and her first (and last) experience at La Ruta de los Conquistadores in Costa Rica when she nearly died of kidney failure and found herself alone in a rural hospital in the jungle with nothing but the kit she was wearing and a very limited understanding of Spanish.

Larissa Connors might be the most stoked and energetic person you've ever seen. Every photo I see of Larissa has her rocking her infectious grin. Seriously, google her and look at the images! What puts that cheshire cat grin on her face? Mountain biking. Larissa is an ultra endurance mountain bike racer for Sho-Air cycling group and Felt bicycles. Larissa is rad- she has won every 100 miler she has ever raced including the Leadville 100. On top off her stellar fitness, she is a full time high school Algebra teacher who gets an insane amount of riding in each month from an awesome bike commute and coaches the Laguna Beach Interscholastic mtb team. She is addicted to pushing herself to ride further, higher and harder every minute of every day (much to her CTS coach's dismay). She is racing 5 100 mile mountain bike races in a row (yeah, ever week!) In addition to winning, Larissa's main goals in cycling are to make every day the best day possible, to inspire stoke, and to spread the gospel of mountain biking far and wide. If just one person finds the joy of sailing down a trail, over rocks and roots, in the woods on a Felt Edict, then her career will be deemed a success! "What matters is that I focus on lifting others up, having a great time riding bikes, and spreading stoke." - Larissa Connors Topics Discussed in the Podcast Larissa' background and her transition to endurance racing What Larissa loves about being a teacher How she deals with disappointment What her #anotherbestday means to her How she stays motivated How much Larissa Connors trains (it's crazy!) Her one non-negotiable Larissa Connors race strategy (and it worked to win Leadville 100!) Larissa Connors is a professional mountain bike racer and the recent winner of the Leadville 100. In her “spare” time she is a full time math teacher in California. Larissa was in Aspen for the WEDU FIFTY and sat down with Lance to talk riding bikes and juggling a full time job. She may be the happiest guest we have had on The Forward. She also went out and won the women’s field in the FIFTY the day after the interview and returned to California that night to teach school on Monday morning.
