French soldier Gaétan Picon crafted his namesake liqueur — an intensely bitter, herbal, and orange-forward spirit meant to fight off fevers — in the 1830s. Back home, locals soon discovered that a dash of Amer Picon in their beer transformed an ordinary pint into something extraordinary. And so the Picon Bière was born. Joining us to explore it today is Jay Zimmerman, long-time bar owner and bartender at Bar Ba'sik, which sadly recently closed, and sales manager at Good Time Brewing Co. Listen on (or read below) to discover Jay's Picon Bière recipe — and don't forget to like, review, and subscribe! Jay Zimmerman's Picon Bière Recipe Ingredients - 1 ounce Amer Picon or alternative, such as Braulio or the Pathfinder - 6 ounces beer, such as Kronenbourg, Witbier, or Good Time IPA Non-Alcoholic Directions 1. Build in a 10 ounce Highball glass. 2. Serve as cold as possible without ice.

Two years ago, the US was on the cusp of seeing its first national rail strike in decades. Then, President Joe Biden, at the urging of the rail companies, and with the help of both parties in Congress, preemptively blocked railroad workers from striking in December of 2022. Workers were forced to accept a contract that did not address the vast majority of issues that have been putting them, our communities, and our supply chain at hazard. How has this all shaped railroad workers' attitudes and approaches to the upcoming elections? In this urgent panel discussion, we pose this question directly to three veteran railroaders, and we have an honest discussion about how working people should act strategically within and outside the electoral system to advance their interests. Panelists include: Hugh Sawyer, a veteran locomotive engineer with 36 years of experience, a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen Division 316, and a founding member and acting treasurer of Railroad Workers United; Mark Burrows, a retired locomotive engineer with 37 of experience, who has served as co-chair and organizer for Railroad Workers United, where he still edits RWU's quarterly newsletter “The Highball”; Ron Kaminkow, a recently retired former brakeman, conductor, and engineer who worked for many years in freight rail before working 20 years as a passenger engineer at Amtrak, a founding member of RWU and delegate in the Northern Nevada Central Labor Council. Episode Summary:California has always attracted outsiders, from the Gold Rush in the 1800s to young actors and filmmakers drawn to Hollywood. California was especially a place of migration during the Great Depression, when tens of thousands came searching for jobs and new beginnings. This is the first of two episodes about writers displaced by the Depression who took different paths to remaking themselves in California and documenting America. Future composer Harry Partch was more comfortable as a migrant than in straight mainstream society. Tillie Olsen found her way from Nebraska to become a reporter-activist who faced long odds to becoming a writer as a woman in the 1930s. With their work on the Federal Writers' Project, Olsen and Partch helped create an expansive picture of California, people in migration, and the day-to-day reality that included deep labor unrest. Tensions that roiled across America boiled over in the California Writers' Project, signaling the struggles to come in the national office. Today is the day that Himkok in Oslo unleash their most ambitious project yet – a catwalk collection inspired by the 13 cocktails on their new menu. But before we hear from head of research and development at Himkok, Paul Voza about that, we have this week's bottles, bar and book recommendationsOur drinks reviews take in two products of the agave variety: the first is Patrón El Alto Tequila; the second, The Lost Explorer Salmiana Mezcal. On the bars front, we sample the cocktails and soak up the luxe but fabulously laid back vibes at recently opened Dover Yard, while our book choice is the excellent Modern Classic Cocktails – 60 Stories and Recipes from the New Golden Age in Drinks by Robert Simonson. Then it's over to Oslo where we hear from Paul Voza about the cocktail creativity at Himkok and the remarkable catwalk show taking place today. The clothes designed by Eline Dragesund are one-offs but the drinks will be available for the entire year. Make it your mission to try them. For more from The Cocktail Lovers, visit thecocktaillovers.comFor the products featured in this episode, see websites below:What we're mixing:Whisky Highball50ml Whisky100ml sodaMethod:Chill your whisky, soda and Highball glasses. The highball is at the top of the cocktail family tree. It's simply carbonated water and spirit, and that inspired a lot of inventions (see Collins, Paloma, Cuba Libre, anything in a tall glass mixed with bubbles). The Japanese however, have taken this from just a 2 ingredient cocktail (technically 3 if you include ice) to an art form. Jules did the same, by infusing Cognac with Peach and adding a bit of basil syrup and lemon… geez it's good. Japanese Highball Before you begin: chill collins glass in freezer Be in the moment, and smile Now.. in your chilled glass: Add chunk(s) of clear ice (filling glass halfway) and stir for 30 seconds. Pour excess water out. Add 2 oz whiskey over ice, and ice - and stir 13.5 times EXACTLY. I used Nikka Coffey Malt (this is not coffee flavored - it is made in a Coffey style still), you can use Suntory Toki, or any spirit if you want. Add 1 more piece of ice (if needed) and top of with 6 oz of carbonated water (can split with Ginergale if you like). The more carbonation the better. Nestle bars poon under ice and stir 3.5 times EXACTLY. When finished stirring, softly lift the spoon out of the glass WITHOUT disturbing the drink any further. Take thick lemon peel and express via match over drink, twist, and set peel in drink. If you want to add a bit of different flavors, you can use bitters and I've even used a touch of cinnamon simple Peach Infused Cognac Highball Before you begin: Chill your glass Making Peach Cognac: 2 cups Cognac in jar cut up 1 peach, remove pit, and let sit for 1 week In your glass 2 oz peach infused whiskey ½ oz lemon juice ½ oz basil syrup 4 oz club soda Gently mix with a mixing spoon Garnish with a basil leaf & enjoy The Art of Drinking IG: @theartofdrinkingpodcast Jules IG: @join_jules TikTok: @join_jules Website: joinjules.com Brad IG: @favorite_uncle_brad This is a Redd Rock Music Podcast IG: @reddrockmusic www.reddrockmusic.com Learn more about your ad choices. In today's episode, Liz Lange, Grey Garden's current owner and style afficionado, joins me to discuss the revitalization of both the historical house and gardens. Grey Gardens was on the cover of a recent edition of Veranda, an upscale lifestyle magazine with a focus on home design and decor. Inside the glossy pages of the magazine, we read Liz's interview and see the updated home and garden. The pictures are eye candy for us gardeners! Throughout the episode we'll learn how Liz preserved original elements of the historical house and launched a refreshingly new look with a style all her own. We'll discover how Liz lovingly honored the Edies by having artwork commissioned, such as busts of the Edies, pictures, and custom wallpaper of the ladies which are displayed in different areas around the house. So go grab a Highball and swirl the swizzle stick as we eagerly open the proverbial garden gate and welcome Liz to the podcast! You can find the episode of the Just Enough Family podcast that features Liz Lange on Amazon Music or wherever you get your podcasts. The Veranda article about Liz's renovations to Grey Gardens can be found here. If you'd like to see more of Liz's current work, you can find her fashion design at Figue.com

As if watches weren't niche enough. Today we dive into the vintage watch ad rabbit hole with Nick Federowicz, better known by his online persona of Ad Patina. Nick makes a living scouring the world for old copies of obscure magazines and finding the nostalgic treasures encased within. Not only do these ads offer a period-correct glimpse of our favourite watches, they shine a light on the world in which they were created, and show us just how much it has changed. Nick explains to us that while these ads show us the watches, what they really offer is a glimpse into the past. On top of all that, Felix and Andy talk through some of their favourite new releases, including the standouts of LVMH Watch Week, and the re-launched Cartier Tank Française, but more on that next week.
