In this week's episode I'm joined by Gemma Kirk as we listen to songs from her indie-folk band - Lost Chimes. Having first met in Sheffield, we talk about how she got in to songwriting and found her voice. We explore how, sometimes, painful (and, sometimes, abusive) relationships can weave in and around more upbeat songs and how - ultimately - life is messy and all we can do is live it and try to learn as we go. We talk life, death and growing confidence. We share thoughts on how it is to find oneself as a woman in rock music and some of the people who touch our lives and how we are richer for it. Gemma describes her album as a big hug and, having spoken with her, I can see why.Songs featured in this episode:All songs from Lost Chimes, released May 3, 2021. Recorded with long-term collaborator and engineer, the late John Hannon, (Understand, Liberez, No Recording) in Rayleigh, Essex. DBL#8 JOHN HANNON John Hannon has been involved in various musical endeavours over the past 30 years. This began with uksxe band Stand off which morphed into Understand who took a more serious musical approach which resulted in their signing with a major label. Probably making them the first uk hardcore band to take that step in the mid 90s. There are some great stories here like recording with Don Fury in NYC, touring with bands like Jawbox and Helmet and where they signed their major label deal. John also explains how he moved into making much more experimental music with Woe in the early 2000s and then the group Liberez who released their last album in 2018 on Alter records. Also discussed is his career as a recording engineer and owning his own NO studios near Southend. The track at the end is by Stirling a noisy garage rock band he played guitar in also during the mid 90s who had a 7" of unearthed material released last year. Really enjoyed this chat and as you can tell this is just scratching the surface. There is another podcast he was on called Then and Now about the Essex hardcore scene where he talks specifically about Understand which I would highly recommend to anyone wanting more. Please subscribe and share this to anyone who may be interested. Follow on Instagram: @destroybeforelistening

Luke 21:34-36“Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”//Sometimes we say that Advent is about waiting. But that implies that we’re just sitting around waiting for the time to pass until the birth of the Christ child. But Advent isn’t passive. Lived well, Advent is the time when we are the most active, the most alert, the most awake, the most in tune with the world because we are expecting God to break through into our lives.I believe that God longs to break into each of our well-protected lives, to teach us about hope, love, joy, and peace, right now. If anything, Advent is the time when we must wake up to live in the present, to live the life that God has given us right now, to refuse to live yesterday over and over, to resist the temptation to save our best selves for tomorrow, to not put off living the kind of life we were meant to live today. There’s not time for that, no matter how much time is left.-Rev. Cameron Trimble//In your own words, how does Luke’s invitation to “be on guard” connect with the season of Advent? What does it mean for you to live in the present and refuse to live yesterday over and over?//This episode was written and recorded by Cameron Trimble. comment exprimer le potentiel humain ?
