Show Notes: 01:03 和谐组:Alvin Curran,Natural Wonder Beauty Concept 10:21 吓人组:Colin Stetson 13:06 爵士组:Nala Sinephro,Ben LaMar Gay Ensemble,Elliot Galvin 21:19 对照组:Panda Bear,Erika de Casier 27:52 破坏组:Moin,caroline,YHWH Nailgun 37:40 催眠组: Alessandro Cortini,more eaze & claire rousay,石桥英子,Kali Malone 44:58 优雅组:Arooj Aftab 48:00 跳舞组:Two Shell,Djrum,Zoë Mc Pherson 50:20 太极组:Laurie Anderson 《周末变奏》开通豆瓣页面,欢迎标记、点评!
This episode of Sync Music Matters is an interview with NYX's Sian O'Gorman about the scoring of the BBC series Dope Girls NYX is a collective of experimental vocalists and electronic artists based in London. In Greek mythology, NYX is the primordial goddess of the night, born from chaos giving birth to light and day. And it's this duality which inspires their creativity. NYX blend traditional vocal techniques with cutting-edge sound design, and in doing so they craft sonic worlds that bridge the ancient and the futuristic In 2020 their collaborative album Deep England with Gazelle Twin was named one of The Guardian's top ten contemporary albums and in 2021 NYX received Film London's Breakthrough Talent Award. They have just completed their debut TV score for the BBCs Dope Girls due out in the first half of 2025 and are due to release their debut album NYX in March 2025 Some of Sian's musical influences which aren't mentioned in the show include: Her hero Joe Hisaishi "I listen to my Miyazaki film soundtracks almost daily" The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance OST by Daniel Pemberton Mica Levi's Zone of Interest score "My mind was completely blown" Colin Stetson forever! Centred around care, connection, and collaboration, the collective creates immersive sonic landscapes that traverse the full spectrum of human emotion – from the depths of grief to ecstatic joy. Their work balances ritualistic intensity with playful exploration, offering audiences a transformative experience to ground themselves in the power of sound and embodiment. Drawing on influences from psychoacoustics, somatic practices, and experimental sound design, NYX operates at the intersection of composition and improvisation. At the heart of NYX's artistry is a distinct compositional process led by music director Sian O'Gorman. Each piece begins as a deeply personal act of vocal experimentation and layering, evolving into dynamic sonic landscapes shaped collaboratively with performers. This process blends improvisation with precise direction, resulting in music that feels both curated and alive. 00:00:00 Introduction 00:02:00 Interview with NYX - What was your path into music 20:19:06 Under The Skin - Dope Girls and the debut Album NYX 56:16:00 Getting a Taste - What music and art has influenced you? Although ranking tracks and declaring a ‘Best of 2024' can be subjective, one thing is certain: whenever local legend Dan Ryan announces new music, he's generally an overwhelming favourite. His most recent release, Cromags, may be his best yet. Ryan creates a true masterpiece by melding tribal rhythms with uplifting chords and poignant vocals, resulting in a composition that would feel right at home on a Hans Zimmer soundtrack. Electronic music has become increasingly flashy and performative, often lacking any mystique it once held. Our Instagram feeds are flooded with every detail of our favourite producers' lives, many of whom reveal all their secrets in the name of ‘content.' Yet, when a mysterious artist like Dan Ryan reveals a track of such high calibre, it feels like a beacon of hope. It reminds us that there are still artists out there making extraordinary music who prefer to remain under the radar. Whenever this Irish producer grants us a glimpse of his work, we stop, listen, and rewind repeatedly. Our culture has grown alarmingly comfortable with mediocrity. We're often more focused on churning out generic music to keep pace with rapidly changing algorithms than on creating something truly exceptional. This obsession with quantity over quality has diluted the music landscape, leaving artists struggling to produce just another ‘okay' track. Dan Ryan, however, is a refreshing contrast. Rarely heard from and content with letting his music speak for itself, he emerges infrequently but always delivers a masterpiece when he does. Cromags is a masterful fusion of classic tribal percussion and otherworldly sound design, evoking a soundtrack that is fit for humanity's ascent into a new world. The track radiates effortless cool, with Ryan pushing energy to its limits before unleashing moments of explosive intensity, like a lion bursting from a cage. This dystopian groove seamlessly bridges our past and present, delivering something refreshingly new and irresistibly infectious. When asked about the idea for the track Dan and the video that accompanies it, he said “The original idea for the video was to just showcase the landscape of Ireland. I recorded it on two different bike trek trips across Ireland during lockdown times and just filmed all of what I saw and the people I met along the way. Churches and religious statues are a big part of the landscape of rural Ireland, so that became a big part of the video.” “The song samples a tune called “Reborn” by Colin Stetson; it's the soundtrack from a movie called Hereditary, and I fell in love with the song when I heard it and immediately imagined big, banging breaks behind it. There is a sample of a woman speaking on the track—she's a dying woman talking about what she will miss about life, which I think fits really well with the tune and gives it a real life-and-rebirth vibe. I think the video ended up highlighting the beauty of Ireland and the happiness of just being alive riding a bike across the country.“ SC: @danryan724 IG: https://www.instagram.com/ryandan725/ Four Four Magazine --------------------------- FB: www.facebook.com/FOURFOURDANCE/ IG: www.instagram.com/fourfourmagazine/ Web: www.fourfourmag.com/

We're back after a four month hiatus to bring you our list of the top 100 albums of 2023. Is it, at bare minimum, a month and a half late? Yes. By "we" do we mean "just Brad because Sean wouldn't want any part of this nonsense"? Yes again. But whatever, we're doing it anyway. It has been another great year for music, which at this point should not be shocking. We've got incredible team-ups galore, big names from the past making a mark in the present, new names bursting on to the scene, everything and the kitchen sink albums, spoken word weirdness, hip-hop standard bearers still innovating, gloopy synths, the sounds of a haunted house, and above all else, a lot of very aggressive, noisy music. It was a hell of a year. So... enjoy? (We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming... eventually. Probably soon. We are still reeling from the Detroit Lions losing the NFC Championship game, so it might be a while) Artists Discussed (In Alphabetical Order): 2FAC, Aaron Dilloway, Aho Ssan, Altin Gun, Ana Frango Elétrico, Armand Hammer, Bandler Ching, BBBBBBB, Bill Orcutt, Billy Woods & Kenny Segal, Bounaly, Brass Riot, Bully, Caterina Barbieri, Charif Megarbane, Colin Stetson, Dead Times, Deena Abdelwahed, Disclosure, Divide and Dissolve, DJ Finale, DJ Girl, DJ Smiley Bobby, EABS & Jaubi, El Michels Affair & Black Thought, Ellen Arkbro, Embarker, Emergency Group, Euglossine, Fever Ray, Fire Toolz, Forest Swords, Gazelle Twin, Gezan & Million Wish Collective, Great Falls, Guilty Simpson & Uncommon NASA, Hitech, Hourloupe, Hyphyskazerbox, ICECOLDBISHOP, Jana Winderen, Janelle Monáe, Jlin, JPEGmafia & Danny Brown, Judgitzu, Karen y los Remedios, Katarsi, KEN Mode, Kool Keith & Real Bad Man, Kouns and Weaver, Larry Wish, Lauren Bousfield, Loraine James, Lost Girls, Lunch Money Life, Madlib, Meyhem Lauren, & DJ Muggs, Mallwalker, Marina Herlop, Matmos, MC Yallah, Mendoza Hoff Revels, MIKE, Mike Nigro, Model/Actriz, Mukqs, M-Ziq, Natalia Beylis & Eimear Reidy, Neupink, Novatron, Nuovo Testamento, Oozing Wound, OrangeTone, Organized Cream, Ortopedia Tecnica, Osees, Paavoharju, Physique, PoiL/Ueda, Private Lives, RP Boo, Screaming Females, Shit And Shine, Sightless Pit, Silver Apples & Makoto Kawabata, Sunik Kim, Sweeping Promises, TALSounds, Tee Vee Repairman, Teeth of the Sea, That Mexican OT, The Gate, The HIRS Collective, Tim Hecker, Tinashe, Tzusing, Victoria Monet, Vorsicht Kinder, Wound Man, Zoh Amba/Chris Corsano/Bill Orcutt --- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social

When composing the perfect cinematic feast, music is that "mot juste" or the proverbial cherry on top....On this episode we going with the chef's recommendation as we dive into 'The Menu' and talk with composer Colin Stetson.A couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. It's an absolute delight when we get to talk about one of the movies of the year in 'The Menu; which is coming to VOD platforms (and possibly Disney+ here in Canada) next week as we got the pleasure of sitting down with Colin to ask him about getting the job, the challenges of composing for the screen along with the creative payoffs and so very much more.

Meet musician Colin Stetson the composer for the new movie "The Menu", starring Ralph Fiennes. Stetson masters the art of melding his multi-instrument mastery into one incredible score. Colin talks all things business and being a music maestro. The score for The Menu is an evolution from any other score Stetson has done in the past. The string-forward and percussive music uses grotesque soundscapes and motifs to mirror the psychosis of the main character (Ralph Fiennes). As the narrative builds, Stetson creates unique musical moments, some given only at a specific time and place, and others that weave a thread throughout the film. Rather than creating character themes, he created a theme for the menu that interacts with characters, giving the menu a sense of self; an off-kilter pretension that instigates discomfort in the listener. The film's concept allowed Stetson to use eccentric and experimental instrumentation: playing glasses with chopsticks, hitting tuning forks on Tibetan bowls, using pans as percussion; making the score fit the environment while keeping it separate from the diegetic sounds of the kitchen. He uses his own undulus vocals which clone the full orchestra of strings.“From my first reading of the script to our last moments on the mix stage, my experience creating the music on this film has been an absolute joy, as the themes, refrains, and aesthetic have seemed to jump right off of the page and screen for me with every brilliant turn of phrase, perfect edit, and wickedly delivered performance. It is pure pleasure working with such an incredible team and I am truly grateful for the whole of it,” says Stetson.A couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. Welcome to Right on Cue, the podcast where we interview film, TV, and video game composers about the origins and nuances of their latest works. It's hard to think of a more overt lens through which to satirize the divisions of class more than through food: Fast food vs. haute cuisine, Michelin stars over star-shaped chicken nuggets. Mark Mylod's The Menu is a sizzling satire of the snootiness of fine dining, and the class conflicts it unfurls. Set on a remote island that's home to one of the most exclusive restaurants in the world, The Menu treats us to a multi-course prix fixe of mayhem centered around high-profile chef Julian Slowik (a beautifully ostentatious Ralph Fiennes). But as the eclectic group of well-off diners sample one conceptually-minded meal after another, it becomes clear there's more than meets the eye for Chef Slowick's menu. Accompanying each course of the menu Mylod, his cast, and screenwriters Seth Reiss and Will Tracy have set out for us is a cheekily propulsive score courtesy of Hereditary composer Colin Stetson. He lays out ornate soundscapes and unusual instruments (glasses played with chopsticks, pans as percussion) with the same perverse mirth as Fiennes' devilish chef, granting each course, and each sick joke on Chef Slowik's guests, a unique voice. And all throughout lays an arch counterpoint to the kind of chamber-music regalness we aesthetically associate with fine dining. It's a pleasure to welcome Colin Stetson to the podcast to talk about all these ideas and more. You can find Colin Stetson at his official website here. The Menu is currently playing in theaters. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Milan Records.

Even by our exacting standards, this episode of the Independent Music Podcast is out of this world. From experimental club music to DIY lofi garage rock, from Jewish folk music to airy baroque jazz, the music on this podcast really pushes the boundaries of classification. Halloween is upon us, and with Halloween comes a creepy plethora of freaky cult films, scary soundtracks, and a fascination with the horrific and the macabre that overtakes culture by a storm. For this episode, host Azariah Mai sits down with saxophonist, multireedist, and composer Colin Stetson for our very own Halloween special. We'll be getting spooky with it as we discuss his work on the soundtrack of the renowned 2018 horror film ‘Hereditary' and the 2022 release of Texas Chainsaw Massacre the Netflix sequel. Colin has worked with the likes of Arcade Fire, Bon Iver and Bell Orchestre. We'll also listen to the track ‘All Aboard' from the upcoming film ‘The Menu' hitting cinemas this November 18th, the soundtrack of which has been produced by stetson himself. Hosted on Acast. For the latest episode of Signal Path, Zakia Sewell speaks with Colin Stetson, a multi-instrumentalist composer best known for his radical, full-body approach to playing the saxophone with Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Laurie Anderson and Bon Iver, as well as his eerie scores for films like Hereditary and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. COLIN STETSON Colin Stetson was born and raised in Ann Arbor, spent a decade in San Francisco and Brooklyn honing his formidable talents as a horn player, eventually settling in Montreal in 2007. Over the years he has worked extensively, live and in studio, with a wide range of bands and musicians including Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, TV On The Radio, Feist, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Bill Laswell, Evan Parker, The Chemical Brothers, Animal Collective, Hamid Drake, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Angelique Kidjo, Fink, and David Gilmore. Meanwhile he has developed an utterly unique voice as a soloist, principally on saxophones and clarinets, his intense technical prowess matched by his exhilarating and emotionally gripping skills as a songwriter. Stetson's astounding physical engagement with his instruments (chiefly bass and alto saxophones) produces emotionally rich and polyphonic compositions that transcend expectations of what solo horn playing can sound like. Stemming from that approach and aesthetic, he has been contributing regularly to the world of film, TV, and game scoring over the past decade with such titles as Hereditary (2018), The First (2018), Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), Color Out of Space (2019), Barkskins (2020), Mayday (2021), Among The Stars (2021), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), The Menu (2022), and Uzumaki (2023). For the 104th Record Club, we break down the minimalist one-man jazz of Colin Stetson, the idiosyncratic and incredibly powerful saxophonist who has carved out one of the most distinct presences in the modern era of the instrument. We discuss his techniques, the bizarre and multi-layered sounds he is able to pull out of the saxophone through sheer physical commitment, and the way these sounds manifest on his remarkable 2013 album New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light. We're men of our word. As we look to clear all of our outstanding commitments from our old Patreon model (info on the new one - the Unsung Record Club - can be found here), there was one album we were asked to do that we'd been putting off for a while - New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges by Colin Stetson. Our top subscriber Cory Robinson asked us to do this a while back, but it took us ages to get around to it. Why? Well, we actually tried to do it earlier on in the year. We listened to the record and thought that it would make a very interesting episode, but none of us could quite connect with it. A few episodes passed and we realised that we had to stop putting this one off and just go for it. For a podcast that primarily deals in rock music, and the various subgenres of, we do our best to expand our palette where possible. We've covered jazz briefly in the past of course, but nothing quite as avant-garde as this. This album, and indeed most of Colin's work, requires the listener to be in a certain mood. It's a mood that doesn't come easily when you're unfamiliar with the genre, and it's also something you can only really tackle if you're feeling up to the task because this is complex, challenging stuff. It's also musically and technically impressive. Oh, and physically impressive too - the things this guy can do on his own with just a saxophone and a bunch of mics in one room are truly stunning. So as you can imagine, it took us while to get into the mindset to tackle this album. On this episode, alongside chatting about Colin Stetson's extensive discography - soundtrack work included - we talk about mood albums as a whole, and discuss why it can sometimes be difficult to get into a song/band/album if you're just not in the mood for it. We also discuss how this affects the creation of this podcast as a whole. Yeah, that's right, we get fucking introspective this week folks. Is this an unsung classic? We certainly feel it is…

Colin Stetson is an unbelievably talented saxophonist who has been on a very personal musical journey since a young age. An undisputed virtuoso, he has been blowing the minds of audiences around the world with his solo concerts since the early 2000s. His personal language is incredibly lyrical, using extended sax and extra musical mic'ing techniques to add multiples layers of complexity and soul to his work. He's worked closely with the Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Tom Waits, Sara Neufeld and most recently with the quartet Ex-Eye. This conversation took place just a few weeks ago and was an utter delight.
