The children of Israel were attacked by Amalek for seemingly no reason. This was their first challenge from an outside force.  They prevailed against Amalek by the faith of their leader Moses who interceded on their behalf, raising his hands to the throne of God with Aaron and Hur holding up his arms whenever he tired.  Victory did not come by any skill or strength of the people.
