Though it may not be as clear in the King James English, the text of Psalm 22 in the Hebrew clearly depicts the suffering of Christ. Although the psalm was written by David, the details cannot possibly refer to his own suffering: it is a prophetic picture of Christ written a thousand years before it became history. It is important to study the Old Testament to understand how God unfolds the revelation of Christ in the New Testament. The Lord's Passover and the exodus out of Egypt's bondage point to Christ's delivering sacrifice. Just as the children of Israel had to apply the blood of the lamb to the door to be spared from death, we must apply the shed blood of Christ to our hearts. God appoints reoccurring seasons in the life of the believer. They are tied together in a set order to permanently heal us and bring us to completion in Christ. The message begins with recounting the story of a congregant that you were trying help with his own personal issues.  He essentially says that he thinks he is smarter than any of the staff and you.  This message is a warning about intellectual pride. We are to be cautious to not get puffed up in our own knowledge to "be not wise in your own conceits."  The antidote is to work out our salvation in fear and trembling, in humility, to walk humbly with God. Even a little pride can be enough to prevent growth. Pride manifests itself as presumption before God, love of human praise, inability to say "I was wrong", and a spirit that appears to possess all knowledge.
