When Jesus cursed cities that had seen His miracles and not repented, He said that it would be worse for them than for Gentiles that had not known God. Most religions have some concept of hell and eternal punishment, but we can look directly to what Christ said. In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man ended up in a place of separation and torment, whereas Lazarus was taken to heaven by angels. The right starting point for the Christian is not to ask how to avoid going to hell but to begin a right relationship with God, following and trusting Christ. The word “desperate” has two meanings in English: the etymological meaning of the hopelessness and the more modern meaning of strongly desiring. Some people remain in a state of spiritual infancy and do not come to the maturity required to take the whole counsel of God. It is much more painful to be badly treated by somebody you love than by a stranger, and the Holy Spirit of God is very close to us, given to us by God to abide in our hearts.  God continues to give second chances, forgiving all sin against the Son, but we are warned that sin against the Spirit is unpardonable.  If we are sensitive to the Holy Spirit and reading the scriptures to learn more about God's way, then He will help us in our walk as yielded vessels. Like those in Corinth, many churches today have elevated spiritual gifts, especially speaking in tongues, as the mark of salvation causing contention and disunity in the body.  Paul corrects this by clarifying that there are diversities of gifts, distributed by the Holy Spirit for the edifying of the church. The are many traditions regarding the baptism of the Holy Spirit that can be debunked by a closer look at the scriptures. The word "baptism" is a Greek word (from "bapto") that indicates a dipping into. It is used in four ways in the New Testament: the baptism of John the Baptist, the baptism of Christ's suffering, the baptism of believers, and the baptism in the Holy Spirit. John's baptism unto repentance and confession represented a bridge between the old way of the Law and the prophets and the new way of the Gospel. Jesus instructs his followers to make disciples, baptizing them and then continuing to teach them. The pattern in the New Testament is the hearing of the Gospel followed by baptism.
