DBL#27 'FILL YOUR BOOTS' part 1 w/Tim Brooks (Razorcake Magazine, YOFC Records, Stockholm Syndrome, Young Offenders, Nerves). LEATHERFACE were a pivotal band for myself and guest contributor Tim Brooks they are our favourite UK punk band. There's general information out there already but we really dug into obscure fact finding to help fill the gaps. We both felt it important to present these facts and information here as a resource. Even a hardcore fan will find out something new here. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed and helped us put this information together. This part one covers the first era (88-93) of the band. It's punk rock, son. TRACKS INCLUDED - Stubbs/Hammond/Lainey pre Leatherface bands: REMNANTS OF WARSAW - Arctotis Sloath, HEX - Time to Decide, HDQ - There Comes a Time (7" version). + LEATHERFACE: - Cabbage Case (demo) - How Lonely (Smokey Joe version) - Dreaming (1992 Peel session) - One to Say (1991 Hit the North session) - A Cartoon (with the pain) (Test press mix) - Meaning (China Drum Cover) * both radio sessions recorded December 1991. RIP Dickie Hammond
Where to begin... vocalist for THE VSS / ANGEL HAIR / YEAR FUTURE etc. founder of the GSL label and Bottlenekk distribution as well as a graphic designer, art director for Sargent House and prolific digital collage artist. In 1997 The VSS travelled around Europe on the 'Nervous Circuits' tour. Seeing them play here was a total eye opener for me as a teenager. I was interested to know his perspective on touring the UK at that time and seeing the bands here like BOB TILTON / BABY HARP SEAL / STALINGRAD / HARD TO SWALLOW / KITO / EBOLA & RED MONKEY. This is the focus of the first bit of talk before a live VSS track leading into a section about ANGEL HAIR & GRAVITY records. There's a great chunk on this with lots of stories and facts I'd never heard before. The ANGEL HAIR track leads into more philosophical reflections on punk/hardcore & culture. It's a cool wide ranging talk with an awesome figure in the underground scene of the past 30 years. DBL#25 Tony Sylvester (Fabric, Southern Records, The Dukes of Nothing, Turbonegro). This was very interesting conversation for me, a great window into the history of London post-hardcore band FABRIC. From the origins in 1992, recording the 'Body of Water' album, never finding their place or sound & ending with 'Lightbringer' in 1995. After this band ended he focused on his various positions within Southern distribution (Dischord, Touch and Go, Kranky, Southern Lord records etc.) for the rest of the 90s until joining THE DUKES OF NOTHING (featuring IRON MONKEY/ORANGE GOBLIN members). With this group he toured and released the album ' War and Wine' on his Eccentric Man imprint in 2002. Throughout the 2000s Tony was involved in the formation of the AURORA BOREALIS label with former FABRIC bandmate Andrew Hartwell. He also curated and coordinated the ambitious, decade long LATITUDES series of releases (CIRCLE, CHELSEA WOLFE, DANIEL HIGGS etc.) for the Southern label until his leaving in 2010. In 2011 he ended up becoming vocalist for the Norwegian 'deathpunk' group TURBONEGRO recording and touring throughout the 2010s. He currently focuses his time on men's fashion/lifestyle writing and his own AWMS clothing brand. Follow @destroybeforelistening Outro: THE DUKES OF NOTHING - Half Evil

DBL#24 '90s HARDCORE MIXTAPE side A' - PETE vs PEET (Narcosis, Hard to Swallow, Red Right Hand, Underclass, Burst of Silence). This episode is a slighly different one in that it's half conversation and half music. The focus being on the type of 90s U.S. hardcore that we both loved so much. It was a nice way for both of us to find a common bond and also talk about the bands he did vocals in like NARCOSIS, HARD TO SWALLOW, RED RIGHT HAND, UNDERCLASS, BURST OF SILENCE etc. Some big names weren't included but it goes without saying no 45 minutes would be complete if it didn't include the essentials like LOS CRUDOS, DROPDEAD or BORN AGAINST. There will be a follow on episode dedicated to 90s Euro hardcore which is equally as important but less talked about nowadays. You can most likely find any of these bands on Discogs or YouTube, Soulseek file sharing or via bandcamp in some cases... all of the original physical releases are worth picking up if you find anything interesting? DBL#23 - LEE KNIGHTS (Thekevorkiansolution, Koreisch, Slavearc, Frequency Thirteen Records). Having been involved as a drummer in many Sheffield area bands of the past 25 years he has a versatile skill set ranging from death and black metal to hardcore, grind, doom, jazz and beyond. Probably most notable for the frenetic grind of Thekevorkiansolution in the early 00s or the apocalyptic hardcore of Koreisch and controversial sxe metal band Slavearc in the later 90s. Moving past this he became part of the Frequency Thirteen Records scene with more experimental and psychedelic bands like the Unholy Warlock, Drawn of Ichor and Ice Bound Majesty. Most recently he has played in doom band Blind Monarch and Out Ink which is his latest more experimental Prog-jazz project. Follow @destroybeforelistening
JOHN HANNON - REST IN PEACE. It was May 7th 2021 that the sad news of his death became known. This is just a repost of DBL#8 initially published February 20th 2021. it's probably my favourite episode, some great insights, reflections & stories.
DBL#22 - NEIL TURPIN - 21st CENTURY.This is the second part of the conversation with lifelong drummer Neil which brings things up to date with his solo work and new band OBJECTIONS.The past 20 years are the focus here so the contrast between more 'session based' playing against personal work is discussed. DBL#21 - NEIL TURPINThis is a part one which is focused on discussing the music that he was part of during the 90s. As an active drummer for the past few decades now Neil has been involved in a lot of bands who evolved from the mid 90s Leeds 6 scene. Groups like Polaris and Baby Harp Seal and the longest running of which he is best known for would be Bilge Pump. There is also talk about the smaller projects like Diesel Versus Steam and Solanki who also provided the perfect fit for intro music to this show from the first episode. There is a part 2 of this conversation which brings everything up to date on the past 20 years of his musical career. DBL#20 - SNED part 2 (Amorphous Pieces, Flat Earth records etc.) He was the first guest on episode 1 of this podcast and is back to discuss the 90s period. Get ready to expect lots of talk about D.I.Y. touring and playing in the groups One by One, Health Hazard, Suffer, John Holmes... then his switch to tour managing for the bands Dropdead, Los Crudos, His Hero is Gone, Detestation and Submission Hold. Plenty of the highs and lows are recounted for a pivotal decade in punk/hardcore worldwide. DBL#19 'Time Travel' w/ Ed Wenn (Dealing With Damage, Stupids, Sink etc). This episode is myself and Chay joined by Ed Shred to discuss some time travel films. More specifically the kind of niche that various paradoxes occur in such as Predestination (2014), Triangle (2009), Time Crimes (2007), Coherence (2013), Primer (2004), Out of Time (2021), ... This was fun to do and Ed (a Sci-fi lover) was hit with some curveballs which we get into. A light hearted discussion about some heavy films and concepts. DBL#18 - Dave Cochrane (Terminal Cheesecake, Greymachine, GOD, Sweet Tooth, Head of David...).Dave Cochrane has been all over many different projects as a bass player since the mid 80s in Birmingham. He was briefly in the band ANOREXIA with Mick Harris (Napalm Death, Scorn) before spending time playing in HEAD OF DAVID up until 1989. After leaving that group he was involved in the formation of SWEET TOOTH with Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu etc.). They released a mini album on Earache records in 1990 before dissolving into the avant/jazz/industrial group GOD headed by Kevin Martin (the Bug). This band paired down into the more dub orientated ICE and TECHNO ANIMAL whjch he contributed to in the mid 90s.Dave also helped out in the very early incarnation of Kevin Martin's THE BUG. The 00s saw him taking a break from actively being in any groups but he was touring bass player for JESU which paved the way for GREYMACHINE with Justin Broadrick & Aaron Turner (Isis). During this time he'd also formed TRANSITIONAL before playing in the band TERMINAL CHEESECAKE which he has done so for the past 10 years now. Dave is an all round great bloke and very funny as you will hear.Outro:SWEET TOOTH - Fat City (live)This podcast is free but if you want to support there are some nice slipmats for sale. Episode #17 - 'Some Newcastle Stuff' part 2 w/ Graham Thompson. This is a kind of 'case study' of groups I'd had involvement with moving from the fast and chaotic hardcore of ORRIN DEFOREST in late 90s to the formation of the much slower, heavier, doomy vibes of MARZURAAN in the early 00s. Also discussed... learning about production skills and home studio work with the dark ambient drones of R.Y.N. We both look at the involvement in our scene of the time and of course the unavoidable VENOM stories...Please rate, review, subscribe and share thisOr follow on Instagram @destroybeforelistening.Outro:MARZURAAN - 'Morpine Waterfall'
DBL#16 - 'Some Newcastle Stuff...' part 1 w/ Graham Thompson. This episode is a slight variation compared to the previous series of more formal interviews. I am joined by friend Graham Thompson who has played in many bands here over the past 20 years such as Jinn, Ultrashitinferno, Grace, Zealots, OZO, Ballpeen etc. Chances are at some point you may have even been in a band with him if you live in the North East, UK. In 2020 he released a project called Sea Ninety where he played guitar, drums, bass and sang. Quite an achievement amongst all his other projects goin on. He also records, mixes, masters and produces with his Sounds Schitty facility! We talk about probably a universal theme for kids in the 90s getting into music and the hardcore punk scene. From influential early gigs and exposure to the underground scene, also finding the music and collecting records. How you choose an instrument to play, finding people to be in a band with, playing live, & the venues are discussed. DBL 15 'UNDEAD SOUNDTRACKS'This is another episode where myself and Chay Lawrence take a shot at discussing some Horror movie soundtracks. There are a load of films to talk about, too many to take in because there was about another hour of recording which was either brainstorming or rambling tangents. We start with the obvious and look at John Carpenter's scores then Tangerine Dream's contributions, as well as the classic Herzog/Popul Vuh teaming on Nosferatu. There were a number of Soundtracks from the 90s where bands played a huge role in a films visibility like the Crow. The well curated soundtrack for Return of the Living Dead is also discussed as well as obviously, the group Goblin. There's a bunch of other great films we talk about and share some cool anecdotes. DBL#14: The episode here is a look at film, more specifically the 'Folk Horror' movie genre with Chay Lawrence who played in the bands Bob Tilton, Tribute and Coffin Pricks. All of his musical life is discussed at length in Episode #9 if you want to hear more about his background. He is also a big fan of the horror genre and October is a good month to discuss this stuff. 'Folk Horror' is usually based around 3 famous Hammer films: Wicker man, Blood on Satan's claw and Witchfinder general. We take things from there and end up with some unusual twists and turns into the 'Found Footage' genre with Hollow (2011), Borderlands (2013) & Crone Wood (2016).The opportunity to talk about films like this hadn't really arisen until Chay and I talked about things more recently and realised our mutual love for the horror genre. There will hopefully be a more varied output as of this episode because the initial intent a year ago was to be more like a magazine but that has unfortunately drifted. Please subscribe and let other people know this thing exists. DBL#13 Vique Martin The path from being a young zine maker in the early part of the 90s eventually led her to move to America and work at Revelation records in Southern California. She left that position after 20 years fairly recently to a new home with Pirates Press records who release mainly street punk and oi artists as well as being a broker for record pressing in the US.Starting in Brighton, Vique moved around the UK turning her Simba zine into a record label and distribution also. I remember ordering records and Simba zines regularly around 96/97 because she always had a great selection during this time. The first record released was in 1994 and since then stuff was put out by groups such as Greyhouse, Texas is the Reason, Ink & Dagger, Danko Jones, and a number of Swedish groups. The label restarted in the 2010s releasing mainly Louisville bands like Endpoint, Elliott & By the Grace of God. If you are in the US Rev still stock some of the Simba releases that are in print. Vique also promoted tours and drove bands around before leaving the UK for Rev in 1998. She also talks about that experience here..Her early reading about feminism put her on the path towards being able to deal with the heavily male dominated hardcore scene. She has been putting together a book entitled Chicks Upfront: 'Women in hardcore in the 90s' which should see publication next year. Her first book was a collection of work originally published in the Simba zine.Listen past the end track if you want to hear another Rev story and her work as a herbalist with Punk Potions.Outro:GREYHOUSE - 'RTMD'Follow on Instagram@viquesimba@destroybeforelistening Where photos are posted relating to each episode. You can listen via any usual podcast platformsPlease subscribe, leave a review or share this to anyone who may be interested. DBL#12 Justin GreavesJustin has been active playing music since the 80s, from drummer for hire to guitarist in his own group Crippled Black Phoenix. Whether it's in a Jethro Tull covers band with his Dad, or playing the musical saw on a track with Nick Cave and Debbie Harry he's been all over so many different things. Starting out in hardcore bands like Hard to Swallow then the infamous sludge of Iron Monkey, to the doom of Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine (with Lee Dorian and Sunn members) and Electric Wizard's 'We Live' album of 2004.Switching to guitar he formed the musically diverse group Crippled Black Phoenix in 2004 and has now recorded their thirteenth studio album to date this year. Releasing on Invada, Clearview and Season of Mist they have toured extensively with varying lineups and players. The conversation also takes in the CBP choice of cover versions like their 'Horrific Honorifics' album and the Jeffrey Lee Pierce sessions project. Justin also discusses his love of film scoring having provided music for 'The Devil's Business' (2011) and 'Future Shock (2014). A very open and honest look back at his time playing music over the decades. DBL#11 Jim Rushby and Steve Watson from Iron MonkeyThe band were formed in Nottingham in 1994 and were made up of members who had played in various punk and hardcore bands. They created a unique musical mix in the UK at that point in time, using the term 'sludge'.Over the course of their original five year run they experienced several line up changes but released a highly regarded self-titled debut CD, a full length album ‘Our Problem' on Earache and a split with Church of Misery on Man's Ruin Records. With a seemingly nihilistic attitude to both audience and press the band ploughed their own furrow in the UK scene until announcing their demise via a press release in 1999. Tragically in 2002 Iron Monkey frontman Johnny Morrow died of an unexpected heart attack. In 2016 founding members Jim and Steve restarted the band with Jim doing both guitar and vocals. They released the album 9/13 on Relapse Records in 2017. During the hiatus between albums they have secured a devout fanbase which has steadily grown during these intervening years. DBL#10 Andrew NolanI've been familiar with Andrew's bands since seeing Ebola & Sawn Off play at most of the early hardcore gigs I saw in Newcastle in the mid 90s. That energy and idea of hardcore was definitely fresh and inspirational for me at the time. His early background in Leeds pirate radio gave him exposure to hip hop which has now come full circle 30 years later with the project Wolfagram. This is the name he goes by for hip hop production which is another expression of his prolific musical output. The conversation discusses his time and experiences in early 90s Newcastle from the beginnings of the band Sawn Off to then joining Ebola, who went on to tour more widely in Europe. On moving to Glasgow in the later half of the 90s he formed the band Shank who managed to play as far afield as Australia and America. At the same time he was producing noise and experimental work as Joshua Norton Cabal. This stemmed from his early love of strange sounds and the tape trading scene. In 2003 he moved to Toronto, Canada where he quickly formed the Endless Blockade recording a demo in 2004. That band ran until 2010 when he then went on to form Column of Heaven shortly afterwards. Both groups crossed a number of genres such as hardcore, power violence, grindcore, death metal, industrial and noise. After that group's ending Intensive Care began and have been active since 2016. Working as a two piece has provided more flexibility as a band with regard to DIY recording and their freedom in the music produced.Andrew's label Survivalist is also discussed and the importance in having a strong graphic identity to represent the music you create. Also how time can change your opinion on the music you were involved with many years ago.Outro: Intensive Care - 'Taxonomy of Rats' (Closed Casket Activities)Follow on Instagram @destroybeforelistening Where photos are posted relating to each episode. You can listen via any usual podcast platforms like iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Deezer, Acast...Please subscribe or share this to anyone who may be interested. DBL#9 Chay Lawrence Chay was a founding member of the band Tribute and came in as 2nd guitarist for Bob Tilton, playing on their second 7" and first album 'Crescent'. He stayed with the band for around four years and left before their second album was released in 1999. In 2012, after he'd lived in America for a number of years, Chay played bass in the band Coffin Pricks. That group was short lived and featured D.C. legend Chris Thomson (Ignition, Circus Lupus, Monorchid, Skull Kontrol) and Jeff Rice (Ottawa, Calvary, .NEMA). A number of songs were unfortunately never recorded but you can hear them via that link above. This conversation covers the scene in the 90s moving from straight edge bands to the mid decade heyday of UK hardcore. It's impossible to not mention the term 'emo' when talking about this stuff but the music definitely became more melodic. Both the stories of Tribute and Bob Tilton are intertwined and are talked about in depth. Chay's experiences with writing, recording & playing gigs are all mentioned and are a must hear for anyone interested in this era of music! The track at the end is Tribute 'Hitherto' from their final release, a split 7" with Beacon (Spread records, 1997).Please subscribe and share this to anyone who may be interested. DBL#8 JOHN HANNON John Hannon has been involved in various musical endeavours over the past 30 years. This began with uksxe band Stand off which morphed into Understand who took a more serious musical approach which resulted in their signing with a major label. Probably making them the first uk hardcore band to take that step in the mid 90s. There are some great stories here like recording with Don Fury in NYC, touring with bands like Jawbox and Helmet and where they signed their major label deal. John also explains how he moved into making much more experimental music with Woe in the early 2000s and then the group Liberez who released their last album in 2018 on Alter records. Also discussed is his career as a recording engineer and owning his own NO studios near Southend. The track at the end is by Stirling a noisy garage rock band he played guitar in also during the mid 90s who had a 7" of unearthed material released last year. Really enjoyed this chat and as you can tell this is just scratching the surface. There is another podcast he was on called Then and Now about the Essex hardcore scene where he talks specifically about Understand which I would highly recommend to anyone wanting more. DBL#7 JOE THOMPSON Joe is best known as the bass player in Hey Colossus a 6 piece band formed in the London area in 2003. They are quite prolific at this point having released a number of albums and splits on a variety of different labels. Their sound incorporates many heavy elements drawing from noise rock, post punk, krautrock & psychedelic music. The track at the end of the interview is a 16 minute long piece which demonstrates this kind of diversity. It is also from their new album 'Dances/Curses' which was released on Wrong Speed Records Joe's new label which he set up last year. He also wrote a book published by Pomona in 2019 detailing his life and experiences of being in a smaller independent rock band.Hey Colossus are a group I don't know that much about so it was good to hear the details about their background and how they work. Also Joe's perspective in particular on the points previously mentioned.Conversation recorded in December of 2020.Please subscribe and share this to anyone who may be interested.Follow here on Instagram: @destroybeforelistening
DBL #6 - NICK LOARINGSome people may remember him as Nick Enslaved if they bought records from his label/distro back in the 90s or saw him doing vocals for the bands Ebola or Boxed In. He now runs The Print Project workshop in Shipley near Bradford where he operates a bunch of printing presses and has made print his business for the past ten years. Nick's artwork is very bold, geometric and colourful. You can buy this work directly or if you are local to the Newcastle area visit Northern Print for a look in person. Here is a cool short video where he explains the methods used to make these prints. His first gig doing vocals in a hardcore band was for Ebola supporting Los Crudos here in Newcastle at the Broken Doll, 1996. This was an important show for me and also for Nick because it was his vocal debut which he mentions later on in the conversation. He also did some sleeve printing nearly 20 years ago now for a record I was involved in making. I remember asking if he could print the sleeve as cheaply as possible and still have it look good. He did both no problem... I'd always been grateful for that. There's lots of information here and it was great to get in depth and hear him talk so enthusiastically about skateboarding, the 90s UK h/c scene and printmaking amongst other things...Follow on Instagram for related pictures @destroybeforelisteninghttps://www.instagram.com/destroybeforelistening/Music:IntroSolanki - 'Bureaucracy'OutroEbola - 'Bring me the head of Mike Brinson'You can listen via any usual podcast platforms like iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Deezer or directly here through Simplecast. DBL #5 Mike Vest. Mike has been involved with numerous projects over the years but is most famous for playing guitar in the band BONG since its formation in 2005.He's also played in 11 Paranoias, Melting Hand, Drunk in Hell & countless other projects. He has also been doing more remote recordings over the past few years with Oblivion Reptilian, OZO & the most recent grouping Mienakunaru. Mike and I went to the same school together although he was 2 years below and Lee Culver 2 years ahead. I didn't actually know either until maybe 3/4 years after leaving? There were more than a handful of kids from Whickham born around 77-82 that went on to be involved in music and bands thinking about it now. I first met Mike via Rob Woodcock around 2003? then more at early Bong gigs. Just hanging out and smoking weed. The conversation was a bit longer than the 50 minutes here but there were a few rambling tangents trimmed out that nobody really needs to hear. DBL#4 Martin SHIFT. When I'd initially thought of the idea to speak about the DIY attitude within music I didn't want to stick to one genre in particular. That said it usually goes hand in hand with punk rock, although not really the case here. Martin conceived the industrial/power electronics project SHIFT in Sweden in 1997 and moved it to the UK for nearly 20 years before returning back home again.I first met him via the doom-metal message boards in the early/mid 2000s. At this point it was the only real meeting place for people into extreme music forms. The Southern Lord forum in particular attracted lots of people from the UK (specifically the NE). We'd made friends because of his label Unrest productions who I'd help out with in 07/08. Lots of phone calls over various logistics were made and he was definitely a part of things that were happening during that period.Martin is very straight ahead and intense about his music but he's always had my respect with what he's achieved and his uncompromising do it yourself mentality. We hadn't spoken in some years and it was my first time ever interviewing but it turned out great and really interesting hearing his perspective. Interview recorded back in May while he was in rural Sweden and didn't have a proper internet connection. Either way it's a great insight for anyone involved in the noisier more experimental UK scene in the 2000s.Follow on Instagram for related pictures @destroybeforelisteninghttps://www.instagram.com/destroybeforelistening/Music:IntroSolanki - 'Bureaucracy'OutroShift - 'Circling Raptor'You can listen via any usual podcast platforms like iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Deezer or directly through Simplecast. DBL#3: Steve Strode has been a great supporter of North East underground music for nearly two decades now. He was one half of Distraction records with Daz Hubbard in the 2000s and also helped in gig promotions like their notorious weekend fests. One day was always the chance to put on some really unique performances by local underground groups. Distraction also promoted the third and final time Whitehouse played Newcastle in 2004 as well.Steve went solo with Cruel Nature records in the 2010s which has grown through an ever expanding Bandcamp page. He also plays guitar in the usually instrumental band Fret! with Rob Woodcock and Cath Tyler.Always supportive of new projects and ideas from local groups it was good to hear his perspective on this evolution. John Esplen has been involved in punk since the 70s and while not the vocalist in a name band he is always busy behind the scenes. There is definitely a reason Henry Rollins goes around to John's house whenever he is in Newcastle. He's been buying and selling records for decades now with vinylonthe.net being the home to his massive second hand business. He also began the Overground label in 1988 which continues to this day putting out many previously unreleased archive recordings. He also ran the One Louder label in the 1990s who were responsible for exposing Man or Astro Man? within Europe. If this doesn't sound like enough John runs Wipeout music publishing whose top clients would be Sleaford Mods. Also to mention here is his relationship to the story of the Dickies. Top bloke!Edit: There are some problems with the audio in places that I just cannot account for unfortunately?
