Can the Centre hold in France?Nick Cohen discusses the dire state of French politics with journalist, author & academic Agnès Poirier. They discuss the chaos of politics in France over the last years which has seen 4 prime ministers come and go in barely a year. Extremists on the far right and far left are becoming ever more dominant - their voices ever more shrill.In 2017, Emmanuelle Macron became the youngest man since Napoloeon to head the French state and to become President of France, voted in off the back of his own centrist En Marche movement. In 18 months' time, Macron's second term and presidential career come to an end. And there are growing fears about what next presidential elections of May 2027 could herald a major extremist upset, as disappointed French political opinion seems to rush to the extremes of either the hard left firebrand Jean-Luc Mélenchon - defacto leader of La France Insoumise - or Marine Le Pen and the far right Le Rassemblement National (The National Ralley, formerly the National Front).Agnès Poirier explains the disillusionment and the current political landscape divided among Islamified left, failed Macron-centered centre, and radical right factions. Agnès and Nick explore Macron's challenges in maintaining power despite a lack of majority support, the rise of extreme parties, and the shifting dynamics within the French socialist movement. They don't insult people. They're not loud; they put on a suit, and so at least on the surface, they are not scaring people and, and it works. It does work. In Kathryn Robson's Beyond the Happy Ending: Imagining Happiness in Contemporary French Women's Writing and Film (Liverpool UP, 2025), happiness (and the question of how to define, measure and facilitate it) has become a key theme in political, economic and social discourses in recent decades in France and elsewhere, yet research on happiness in French culture and film has been limited. Given that happiness is clearly gendered, this book looks critically at the ways in which contemporary French women's writing and film give voice to and critique conceptions of happiness. Analysing French and francophone women's writing (including Nina Bouraoui, Hélène Cixous, Annie Ernaux, Camille Laurens, Leïla Slimani, Delphine de Vigan) and film (including Claire Denis, Céline Sciamma and Agnès Varda), I focus on five main areas: images of happiness in consumer and Internet culture; happiness and intimacy in the family and the home; queering happiness; migrated happiness, and happiness and ageing. Whilst the 'happiness turn' is problematic, the desire for happiness, however fraught, matters and I show how representations of happiness in contemporary French women's writing and film offer alternative conceptions of happiness that enable us to rethink happiness in more critical, diverse and inclusive terms. Author Dr. Kathryn Robson is a reader in French at Newcastle University and the author in 2019 of I Suffer Therefore I Am: Engaging with Empathy in Contemporary French Women's Writing and in 2004 Writing Wounds: The Inscription of Trauma in Post-1968 French Women's Life-writing. In Kathryn Robson's Beyond the Happy Ending: Imagining Happiness in Contemporary French Women's Writing and Film (Liverpool UP, 2025), happiness (and the question of how to define, measure and facilitate it) has become a key theme in political, economic and social discourses in recent decades in France and elsewhere, yet research on happiness in French culture and film has been limited. Given that happiness is clearly gendered, this book looks critically at the ways in which contemporary French women's writing and film give voice to and critique conceptions of happiness. Analysing French and francophone women's writing (including Nina Bouraoui, Hélène Cixous, Annie Ernaux, Camille Laurens, Leïla Slimani, Delphine de Vigan) and film (including Claire Denis, Céline Sciamma and Agnès Varda), I focus on five main areas: images of happiness in consumer and Internet culture; happiness and intimacy in the family and the home; queering happiness; migrated happiness, and happiness and ageing. Whilst the 'happiness turn' is problematic, the desire for happiness, however fraught, matters and I show how representations of happiness in contemporary French women's writing and film offer alternative conceptions of happiness that enable us to rethink happiness in more critical, diverse and inclusive terms. C dans l'air du 10 octobre 2025 - Macron : un dernier Premier ministre… avant dissolution ?Le temps presse et Emmanuel Macron le sait. Le président doit impérativement nommer un Premier ministre pour respecter les délais d'examen du budget au Parlement (70 jours minimum). Une vingtaine de chefs des partis politiques, en dehors du RN et de LFI non conviés, ont donc rencontré le chef de l'État en début d'après-midi pour "un moment de responsabilité collective", selon les mots de l'Élysée. Plusieurs noms circulent, à l'instar de l'ancien ministre de l'écologie Jean-Louis Borloo, du premier secrétaire du PS Olivier Faure ou encore un profil issu de la société civile comme Laurent Berger. Mais ces dernières heures, c'est Sébastien Lecornu qui semblait tenir la corde, malgré sa difficulté à élargir un socle commun déjà abîmé. L'évocation de son nom a d'ailleurs suscité une levée de boucliers : "Je ne comprendrais pas qu'il y ait une renomination", a affirmé la ministre démissionnaire de la transition écologique, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, tandis que Gabriel Attal a appelé le président à "ne pas donner le sentiment de s'acharner".Une chose est sûre, les députés macronistes ont pris un coup sur la tête cette semaine lorsque l'ancienne Première ministre Elisabeth Borne s'est dite ouverte à une suspension de la réforme des retraites. Dans les groupes What'sapp de la majorité, le débat fait rage sur l'attitude à adopter face à cette déclaration. Faut-il geler la réforme des retraites pour bénéficier de l'appui des socialistes sur le vote du budget, quitte à "dilapider l'héritage" des macronistes et à "mettre en péril l'équilibre des finances publiques" ? Mercredi soir, Sébastien Lecornu avait prudemment ouvert la porte au débat lors de son interview sur France 2 : "De toute évidence, il y a une attente". Quelques députés, comme Céline Calvez (Haute-Seine) en appellent au pragmatisme : "Notre propre héritage, il n'en restera rien si nous loupons cette dernière chance de compromis avant la dissolution".Pendant que le gouvernement se déchire sur les retraites, beaucoup de Français continuent de se serrer la ceinture en fin de mois, comme l'a constaté une équipe de C dans l'air qui s'est rendue dans un relais-routier des Yvelines. "Je ne me plains pas. J'ai quand même un bon salaire. Mais on ne part plus en vacances. Et c'est toujours la classe ouvrière qui trinque", se plaint un client attablé avec sa femme. Même constat pour le gérant du restaurant. Son quotidien ? Des cartes bleues qui ne passent pas à la caisse : "Il y a de plus en plus de gens qui sont à compter les fins de mois (...) Nous on le voit plus qu'avant", raconte-il.Qui sera nommé Premier ministre ? Les macronistes peuvent-ils lâcher la réforme des retraites pour élargir leur base et permettre le vote du budget ?
