Welcome to Issue 133 of Critical Encounters, a podcast about Marvel Champions, a Living Card Game by Fantasy Flight Games. Here we take a good look at that most critical piece of the game, the Encounter Sets. We'll discuss those poorly understood characters, unfairly labeled Villains, and their various plans to shape humanity and benefit the planet, as well as those so-called heroes intent on thwarting them. In this Shadow of the Past issue we look at the nemesis set for Warmachine, the Living Laser, from the Mad Titan's Shadow wave. Within this age of Isolation, movies and shows are either on hold or pushed back. This includes the next phase of Marvel movies. So while we wait, I was thinking about the already announced Black Panther 2 and how the right villain could help balance out Black Panther's over powered suit from the first movie. I mean... they could just get rid of it and make him more like his comic version where he has good tech, some special herbs and his incredible intelligence. Plus the backing of his entire country and its resources. But we all know that won't happen. So the antagonist has to be even more powerful. Hence, I'm digging up a low tier villain who I believe has what it takes to make BP2 shine. The Living Laser.

Take a moment and reflect... If you collect Marvel Legends you are right now in a golden era. The number of figures, and variety, is unparalleled for a 6-inch scale line. In 2019 Hasbro released 135 different, highly articulated and detailed figures (counting the Dani Moonstar Walgreens exclusive as three). The figures covered the MCU, the 616, and more, with X-Men fans getting their due (finally), and deep dive figures such as Rock Python and Living Laser. This is a heyday. Star Wars collectors had this type of generous release (in 3.75-inch scale) from 2005 through 2012, and now get less than 25 figures per year. So understand that sometime in the future, collectors will look back and realize this was the best time ever for Marvel collectors. On this new episode of the Marvelicious Toys podcast Arnie, Marjorie, and Justin do reflect on the excess of riches that Dwight Stall (Senior Design Manager), Ryan Ting (Senior Global Brand Manager), Bobby Vala (Senior Product Designer) and the rest of the Hasbro Marvel team delivered in 2019, and run down their favorite figures from the year. What was the best MCU figure? The best multi-pack? The best Build-A-Figure? They give their picks for all of that and more on this week's Marvelicious Toys. Watch the show and then give us your thoughts -- what were your favorites this year? Let us know in the comments on our web site.

Another mid-week episode bringing you up to speed with the Avengers title from the beginning. These issues are notable for the fact that they are not very good and, aside from the Sons of the Serpent story, feature totally lackluster villains. Plus, by the end of it, our team is down to three lousy members. But hey, enjoy the recap!
We've got a lot of loose ends here: Wanda can fly. Living Laser has the Serpent Crown. Whizzer has returned. Wonder Man is suddenly a good guy. Nuklo is involved as a prisoner of some rogue Army element. None of this is ever fully explained.
This is it! The big anniversary issue to announce the new lineup and its going to...oh wait, never mind, it's mostly reprints. But the next issue has the new lineup and wait, it's written by three people, guest stars Thing and The Champions, and only Beast joins the team? But the next one...ugh...Wonder Man is a zombie and they fight a swamp man in a chicken suit? Oh boy.
Hold on to your spandex, superheroes! The Man-Ape is back...and Living Laser...and Power Man...and Swordsman...and Grim Reaper too. It's the Lethal Legion! The villains kidnap the team but end up losing anyway. AGAIN. And then the Vision quits. Whee.
Watch out! The Living laser is here to tell us how great he is. And when that doesn't work, he decides to help take over a small country. And when that doesn't work, he just sort of escapes, I guess. PLUS...Goliath can change size again...Bill Foster comes back...Black Widow gets mad...and Wasp tries to go shopping.
THE AVENGERS !!! It’s all right, leave it to me!”
